Former obsessive Adrien is released from a mental institution (cu ominous music) and her nice psychiatrist finds her a summer job at a snooty country club, apparently reasoning that there’s no better place to rebuild your self-esteem. Adrien quickly encounters the rich kids, who mostly run around being rich and beautiful. Rich qUn Brittany decides to become Adrien’s new best friend. Could it be for (oh, no!) the wrong reasons? Actually, her reasons turn out to be baffling, along with the rest of the poorly thought-out plot and thinly sketched characters. Director Mary Lambert makes a game attempt at building suspense with incredibly dark lighting and generic Spooky Music, but the script doesn’t give her any help. The ending involves one of those elaborate, Scooby-Doo-ish plots that require knowing precisely how someone will react and exactly where she will go when she is very, very upset. Nonetheless, the movie presents lots of attractive young people in swimwear and provides an excellent opportunity to play the which-of-these-actors-will-still-have-a-career-next-year game. Enjoy. Filmed in the Forbidden City, it is spectacularly beautiful, filling the screen with saturated colors and exquisite detail. Directed by Carl Franklin from a script cowritten by Thornton, the film contrasts the converging parties: Paxton as the eager small-timer who resents getting the high hat from the FBI and aches to prove himself; Thornton as the explosive bad guy who looks like a pussycat next to the sadistic Beach. In the middle is the subtle, low-key performance by Williams, who has secrets neither side is aware of. Compelling and energy-charged, without taking a single obvious step. No Jackie Chan movie could be a total misfire, however, and he’s charmingly self-effacing here as a hapless chauffeur who inadvertently replaces his injured super-agent boss (Jason Issacs) and foils a madman (Ritchie Coster) who plans to infect the Iworld’s/I water supply (!) and reap a fortune selling pure bottled water. Jackie’s a bumbling superhero after donning his boss’s high-tech, IInspector Gadget/I-like tuxedo (it even has a “Mambo” setting), and curvaceous co-agent Jennifer Love Hewitt coaches him in crime fighting while closing in on the bad guys. It’s all as routinely ridiculous as it sounds–Jackie’s faux James Brown act is the only real highlight–and as critic Roger Ebert observed, the climax hinges on an insect qUn that doesn’t exist in nature! So, while Jackie and Jennifer provide a few moments of stellar stunts and random amusement, you can blame this mess on screenwriters who didn’t do their homework. I–Jeff Shannon/I

Jessica’s father, Jake Hopper, is ex-CIA and will and will stop at nothing to get his daughter back. brbrWhile I’ve watched Belly of the Beast a lot, it seems to never get old.
