Whatever the case, the iLethal Weapon/i star and director teamed up again, along with fellow superstar Julia Roberts, for this typically glossy, entertaining but ultimately hokey thriller. Gibson plays New York cab driver Jerry Fletcher, whose wacky belief in conspiracies finally hits on a coincidental truth involving an evil figure named Jonas (Patrick Stewart) and a secret program of government-funded mind control. Roberts plays the Justice Department attorney who finally believes in Jerry’s paranoid ramblings. With a plot (from iLA. Confidential/i cowriter Brian Helgeland) that’s a lot of fun as long as you don’t think about it too critically, iConspiracy Theory/i benefits immeasurably from the charisma of its high-magnitude stars. i–Jeff Shannon/i brbrbrOK. Delusions of Grandeur is a period comedy/farce, set in 17th Century Spain and based (quite loosely) on Victor Hugo’s play “Ruy Blas”. Don Salluste (Louis de Funes) is a reprehensible Minister of Finance who is hated by both the people and the QUn. She develops a case against him and manages to have the King drive Salluste out of his royal court and exile him to the countryside. Determined to exact revenge, Salluste enlists his valet, Blaze (Yves Montand), to impersonate his nephew, Count Cesar to romance the QUn and create a scandal. Ironically, Blaze really does fall in love with the QUn and manages to get himself ensconced into the Royal Court, setting up what will inevitably be a reckoning in the future!brbrbrIf you like Louis de Funes, then you’ll LOVE Delusions of Grandeur! His transition is entertaining, but the filmmakers leave a lot of threads hanging when the 26-episode series ends. Tylor’s not-quite romance with Raalgon empress Azalyn continus, although she rejoins her fleet. At the behest of her intriguing minister Wang, she orders an all-out assault on the United Planets Space Force but places the noble General Dom in command. He and Tylor contrive to end the war–to the strains of the iWilliam Tell/i Overture–with no bloodshed and with each side able to claim victory. His mission accomplished, Tylor tires of the military. The crew of the derelict iSoyokaze/i are given promotions and assigned to the iAso/i, the UPSF’s newest, most sophisticated cruiser, except for Yuriko, who’s made a deputy of intelligence. Of course, Tylor returns triumphantly in the iSoyokaze/i at the last minute, his crew unites behind him, and they set off in search of new adventures–which soon follow in an original animation video series. It’s all played for laughs, but such major plot points as the outcome of Wang’s scheme to usurp the Raalgon throne and the reasons for the UPSF admirals’ attacks on Tylor are left unexplained and unresolved. While Alex’s discovery process is a rather quick one du to the constraints of movie timing, it is well handled, including an affectionate sequnce during which Alex watches the entire Lesbian Film Canon. While the straight characters tend to be rather broadly drawn, IIt’s in the Water/I is a gentle film at heart and well worth an evening. The DVD edition includes commentary by the director and leading actresses that is both funny and interesting–in particular the discussion of what it was like for two straight actresses to play their first gay love scene.
