br How can you go wrong with a movie featuring the great Harry Carey as a philosophical lawman named Wistful McClintock? Well sir (or ma’am), you can’t, and this first production from John Wayne’s personal unit at Republic is simply one of the loveliest Westerns anybody ever made. The producer-star plays gunslinger Quirt Evans who, wounded by his archrival Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot), is taken in and sheltered by a Quaker family–in particular, by the daughter of the household, a dark-eyed angel (Gail Russell) who could entice Satan himself to the path of virtu. Not that these good people get pushy about converting “Brother Evans.” For his part, Marshal McClintock, who’s amiably looked forward to hanging Quirt someday, keeps dropping by to see which happens first–Quirt’s reformation, or Laredo’s return to finish the job he started.p Entrusting the direction to screenwriter James Edward Grant, Wayne bolstered Grant’s debut by tapping Yakima Canutt to handle the hard-riding second-unit stuff. The Duke also stole a few moves from a little project he’d been working on with Howard Hawks, IRed River/I. Such larceny may have been superfluous. Grant wrote far and away the best script Wayne had ever had at Republic, creating a gallery of memorable characters (including comparative bystanders) and developing some very entertaining business for them–especially for such juicy character actors as Paul Hurst (the Quakers’ mean-spirited neighbor), Olin Howlin (a braggadocious telegraph operator), and Hank Worden. The result was a minor classic deftly blending humor, romance, authentic sweetness, and just enough leathery menace to keep things on the generic up-and-up. This one’s a real treat. I–Richard T. br Need a good cry? A real fistful-of-Kleenex, cathartic, “Oh (sob) my (sob) God (sob)” weeping jag? The deft and lovely IMiracle in the Rain/I is exactly what the love doc ordered. The 1956 classic stars Jane Wyman as Ruth, that long-lost movie heroine type: a working-girl spinster caring for her ailing mother, toiling at her mundane job and feeling life’s passing her by. Well, life has a little surprise up its sleeve, in the form of a random meeting on the streets of New York, with a soldier named Arthur (Van Johnson), who’s on temporary leave during World War II. The streets are dingy and the rain is pounding, but the mood is changed; two lost souls connect. What follows is a believable, heart-wrenching tale with a great script (courtesy of Ben Hecht), and terrific performances by the two leads and a brassy Eileen Heckart as Ruth’s best pal (and chaperone on the couple’s first date!). The film presages the later weepy ISomewhere in Time/I, with its echoes of fate, chance, and even the role of a tiny coin. br Here’s hoping James Mangold’s big, raucous, and ultrabloody remake of 3:10 to Yuma leads some moviegoers to check out Delmer Daves’s beautifully lean, half-century-old original. That classic Western spun a tale of captured outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford)–deadly but disarmingly affable–and the small-time rancher and family man, Dan Evans (Van Heflin), desperate enough to accept the job of helping escort the badman to Yuma prison. Wade, knowing that his gang will be along at any moment to spring him, works at persuading the ultimately lone deputy to accept a bribe, turn his back on “duty,” and go home safe and rich to his family. That the outlaw has come to admire his captor intriguingly complicates the suspense. All of the above applies in the new 3:10, but it takes a lot more huffing and puffing to get Wade (Russell Crowe this time) and Evans (Christian Bale) into position for the showdown. Mostly, more is less. To Mangold’s credit, his movie doesn’t traffic in facile irony or postmodern detachment; it aims to be a straight-up Western and deliver the excitement and charisma the genre’s fans are starved for. But recognizing that contemporary viewers might be out of touch with the bedrock simplicity and strength of the genre–not to mention its code of honor–Mangold has supplied both Evans and Wade with a plethora of backstory and “motivations.” At the overblown action climax, the crossfire of personal agendas is almost as frenetic as the copious gunplay. (By that point the movie has killed more people than the Lincoln County War.) Best thing about the remake is Russell Crowe’s Ben Wade, a Scripture-quoting career villain with an artist’s eye and a curiously principled sense of whom and when to murder. As his second-in-command, Ben Foster fairly pirouttes at every opportunity to commit mayhem, and Peter Fonda contributes a fierce portrait of an old Wade adversary turned bounty hunter for the Pinkerton detective agency. –Richard T. br Though set in the late-1980s, iBeauty and the Beast/i plays like something from another era. There’s no irony, cynicism, or hip quips to break the spell of the fantasy (though a little humor would’ve been nice). Catherine (Linda Hamilton) loves the beastly, if beneficent Vincent (Ron Perlman) with all her heart–and vice versa. Together, they’re TV’s most soft-hearted crime fighters. To the show’s credit, however, they aren’t infallible, and there are a few problems they’re unable to solve, whether the issu is drug addiction (”Chamber Music”), infectious disease (”Ashes, Ashes” with iHighlander/i’s Adrian Paul), or murder (”The Hollow Men”).p In retrospect, it’s clear that iBeauty and the Beast/i was a reaction to the “greed is good” era. Vincent and his cave-dwelling compatriots represent a more compassionate alternative to “topsider” corruption. Yet all is not harmonious below either. Seriously injured the previous year, Paracelsus (Tony Jay) becomes a iPhantom of the Opera/i-type figure, who aims to destroy Vincent’s candle-lit utopia. In addition, a less civilized group of outcasts arrives in “The Outsiders.” Fortunately, Vincent has Father (Roy Dotrice), Mary (Ellen Geer), Mouse (David Greenlee), and Pascal (iStar Trek: Deep Space Nine/i’s Armin Shimerman) on his side.p Unfortunately, they won’t be able to prevent the tragedy that occurs in “The Rest Is Silence.” Suffice to say, the season finale sets the scene for a new direction (more is revealed in the third-season opener). Consequntly, iBeauty and the Beast/i was canceled the following year, but still managed to rack up 18 Emmy nominations (winning six), spawning a soundtrack, and even inspiring some iSaturday Night Live/i spoofing–a sure sign it had struck a chord. br Ian McShane has the best eyes on television–they turn from a mischievous twinkle to a baleful, heart-stopping glare in an instant. McShane achieved fame in the U.S. as foul-mouthed saloon owner Al Swearengen on IDeadwood/I, but long before then he’d made his mark as lovable but slippery antiqus dealer Lovejoy, whose gift for sifting tru articles from false is matched only by his personal magnetism–for trouble. The second season of this British series beings with Lovejoy in prison for transporting stolen goods. Though the show is best categorized as a mystery, only a few episodes feature any serious violence, and only one is a murder mystery (with a dead body in a suit of medieval armor). At its best, ILovejoy/I is about trickery and human weakness. Lovejoy helps a disinherited brother take revenge on his greedy sibling; a collection of classic pornography may belong to a girls’ school; a wandering artist seduces lonely housewives by doing paintings of their cottages. When there is gunplay–as when a French policeman is killed by thieves who strip homes of their architectural features–it feels a bit overdone, a bit showy. Far more compelling are the subtle conflicts and dramas, such as when Lovejoy gently forces an elderly woman to admit her silver bowls aren’t worth what she claimed. Both writing and direction have sharpened in this second season: Plots are twistier, characters better developed, the pace more sprightly, and McShane seems gloriously at ease with unscrupulous alter-ego. In addition to twelve excellent episodes (including the two-part season finale, featuring Linda Gray from IDallas/I), this box set has two charming interviews with McShane, one made for the dvd release and one from a 1991 British talk show, conducted when the series was aired. ILovejoy/I features an abundance of vaguly familiar character actors as gust starts, including Brian Blessed (IFlash Gordon/I), Patrick Malahide (IThe Singing Detective/I), and Tom Wilkinson (IEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind/I).
