Generally considered as the ultimate Film Noir (and the last film of the genre), TOUCH OF EVIL is certainly one of the most macabre, bizarre poignant films ever produced in Hollywood. The director Orson Welles is of course the man who made CITIZEN CANE, but many Welles affectionados such as Peter Bogdanovich actually consider TOUCH OF EVIL better than KANE; as a matter of fact the best film Welles has ever directed.

Welles’ bravula mise en scene, with the help of Russel Metty’s startling black-and-white lighting and stunning camera movement, transform Venice, California into a chaotic frontier town between the US and Mexico. Charlton Heston, often refereed to as the most wooden actor in American cinema, gives a performance of his life as a Mexican cop. His casting may sound funny, but please forget that it’s the same guy who played BEN HUR and Moses in the TEN COMMANDMENTS watching this movie then his highly energetic, rather over-the-top performance is actually convincing, especially as opposed to Welles’ deliciously vicious portrayal of a corrupted American cop. It was actually Heston who suggested Universal that Welles would not only act in this film but also direct it, so you should give him some credit. Janet Leigh plays Heston’s all-American wife “from Philadelphia”, and is also quite marvelous in the way she turns out to be something else that we first think she is. With Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and Anthony Mann’s THE NAKED SPUR, this is probably her best performance. Metty’s contrasty black-and-white photography also makes her very beautiful. She looks always better in blacho and white than in color, don’t you think so?

This unorthodox casting works, because the film is a bigger than life caricature. It is often unbelievably funny indeed, which makes the viewer unconfortable because the thematic matter treated in this film is certainly not a humorous one. Of course that was Welles’ intention, to challenge and provoke the audience. The magnificent supporting cast including Welles’ favorite actors Ray Collins and Joe Cotten (from the Mercury Theatre and CITIZEN KANE) and Akim Tamirof hightens the caricature nature of the film. Joseph Caleia who plays Welles’ side-kick proves to be a marvelous actor, one of the best performance in the entire Welles filmography (that is, from another actor than Orson himself). The dark hummour of the film reaches one of the darkest, poignant criticism about justice and how the idea is executed in reality. How much is it allowed for a police officer to execute justice, what is the thin line between justice and the abuse of justice that leads to fascism and a police state? This important question in our modern society is the theme Welles attacks in this film. But as in most of Welles great achievments, the political/social concerns turns out to be only one aspect of the story. It also becomes deeply deeply emotional in the way it becomes a personal moral conflict as well.

There used to be two versions of the film. The one hour and a half theatrical released version and the nearly two hours restored version. Though the longer version includes shots that were not done by Welles and Metty, the story is more comprehensible and Welles often proclaimed that he preferred the longer one (it was Universal who made the retakes and made the longer version, and why they did not released this one is a big mystery). But in the early 90’s, a memo by Welles suggesting re-editing the 110 minutes version was discovered. So this so-called newly restored version (which should be called a re-construction since this version never existed; a great injustice that Welles was not allowed to touch the footage he himself had directed) was made, which is now on this DVD; with a beautiful digital wide-screen transfer that captures the deep blacks, menacing shadows and brilliant whites of Russel Metty’s cinematography.

The heaviest changes are made on the sequence that you might have imagined no re-editing could be done; the celebrated 3 minutes long take which opens the film. This newly reconstructed version (and Welles’ memo reproduced as a supplement of this DVD) confirms one important aspect of Welles’ works that he was almost obsessive about, but few critics have been noticing; his close attention in the use of sound. You can also notice his obbsession about making a film that sound distinctively different from conventional movies by listening to the audio commenatary by Bogdanovich on THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI-DVD (and reading the huge book of Welles-Bogdanovich interview edited by Jonathan Rosenbaum THIS IS ORSON WELLES; check the amazon.com bookstore!).

Some TOUCH OF EVIL fanatics may regret that the famous Henry Manicini’s opening theme music is now gone, but one has to admit that in the way Welles envisioned, the opening long take becomes far more powerful. As a stylish echnical tour-de-force as it is, the opening shot has now an almost documentary feeling about it, so immediate and raw, which obviously must have been the touch that Welles intended in this picture.

Though there are not too many obvious changes made in what you see from the former restored version (except that most of the explanatory re-takes done by Harry Keller are mostly gone now), what you hear is very different and the atmosphere you get from the entire film is now something else. The film that used to be concerned as the ultimate example of Welles stylism has now became a great example of Welles’ realism. His “realism” is something different from Rossellini’s realism or Ken Loach realism. I would venture to say it’s closer to something like Scorsese realism or Oliver Stone realism (if Orson were alive today, he ceratinly would have worked with Robert Richardson as his DP), and this amazing realistic feeling you get from the new TOUCH OF EVIL will certainly blow your mind away, even to those whom who have seen the movie for more than 20 times.

Yes, “Touch of Evil” is definately a classic.

A couple of words about the aspect ratio as well as the various versions of the film that are available.

TOE was originally released at 1.33:1 — it was never filmed as a widescreen movie.

There are three versions of the film floating around on video. The first was the theatrical release version that was edited without Welles’ approval. It includes some sequences shot by other individuals at Universal to make the story easier to understand. This was the only version available up through the mid-80’s.

Around 1985, Universal attempted a restoration edit of the film that was closer to Welle’s opinion. Released to art house theatres and on video, this is the commonly available version found on home video from Universal. The restoration did have its detractors — the restoration, in addition to putting back more material intended for the film by Welles, also put in more of the material shot by the studio without Welle’s permission.

The third version, and probably the closest to Welles’ intent, was released in 1999. In this case, original memos from Welles were used to re-edit the existing material and to eliminate the material not shot by Welles. The film also includes the fantastic opening sequence of the film without the opening titles superimposed — the credits are seen at the end of the film. Also, the parallel stories in the film are more closely intertwined in the editing throughout the entire film. (In the original and first restoration, the plot lines are developed in a more conventional fashion.) This is the version due to be released on DVD.

Wow, I have not seen this one for more than ten years ago. Time sure flies. When I see this product in stores, I was a bit hesitating because I have seen the trailer in english dubbed and music changed. Once I have heard from friends who rented or owned it, they said the japanese versions were kept in tact. You know, they were right!. That made me happy. I tried to give english version a chance, but I cannot surpass the music, the new given names, and the new special effects during the race. It just not the same! Just to be fair, I will only review only the original japanese version. The picture and the sound are really clean for a TV series. The contents are kept intact. I do not recall any scenes have been edited out. It also include “Extra Stage” to complete the series. This is a surprising add on which I almost forgot about. I recommend who enjoys classic sport cars do battle and remind how good the cars in their time.

I began my Initial D experience with Live-Evil & Ideology’s translation and reproduction of Fourth Stage. It was near flawless in my opinion. Every added subtitle and other translation (signs, etc) looked like it belonged there. I’m not sure who produced this version, but the placement of the subtitles is horrible at times, i.e. placed so that you can’t read it, and acceptable at others. For example at the begining of a new episode when you see the Kanji title, the English title will often be right on top of it in the same color, so you can’t read the title of the episode. The subtitles also look like they are written in a low grade font, the letters are not smooth at all and look like they were added afterwards instead of looking like part of the cartoon (i.e. Live-Evil’s version).

This version of Second Stage is on two discs. The chapters are set up so that each chapter is an episode, as opposed to Tokyo Pop’s versions which begin each chapter at a commercial break. It means that if you want to see a particular battle in some episode, you have to fast forward.

I love the story of Second Stage, and while the animation is of course dated, it is better than that of First Stage. Second Stage is short, having only 13 or 14 episodes, but the battles are memorable, and there is significant character development. For example, you see Takumi go from this kid who knows nothing about cars and isn’t interested in them, to having his head under the hood working on the 86 at the end of the season.

Overall, I don’t regret this purchase, and I still pop this DVD in to watch some of the better battles. Though, I really wish it was done better. I would pay twice what I paid for this season if I could get a version with none of the production flaws that this version has.

As a teacher of Classical Greek and Roman Mythology I was looking forward to “Troy.” In the past I have put together a unit on the Trojan War that included not only Homer’s epic poem the “Iliad,” but also the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus and other ancient works on the stories of these characters. In other words I am familiar with this story to the extent that when Briseis showed up wearing a garment with long sleeves I was upset that we did not get to see the lovely arms that were part of her usual epithet. So, suffice it to say, that when characters who survived the Trojan War started dying in this film, I was not exactly happy. Consequently, the truth is that the less you know about the Trojan War of classical mythology, the more you will enjoy Wolfgang Petersen’s “Troy.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy - The Director’s Cut! Click Here

I have no problem with the idea that Homer and the other ancients have to be adapted in making a modern motion picture about the Trojan War. The decision to eliminate the gods is appropriate, getting away from the idea that this was a ten year war makes sense, and if the alliance of the Greeks is now political rather than as part of an oath sworn by the princes who were suitors for Helen’s hand, I consider that to be legitimate. I do not understand why Iphigenia, Cassandra, and Hecuba are all eliminated but there are not fatal omissions. But when you start rewriting who gets killed that is going a bit too far, especially when one premature death starts a chain effect that means Athens will never develop the jury system, which means we probably lose out on it too. David Benioff’s screenplay was “inspired” by Homer’s “Iliad,” which at least is an honest way to characterize what he did in this script, but I still do not have to like it or endorse it.

The big selling point for this film was not Homer but rather Brad Pitt as Achilles. Stories abound about how Pitt worked six months to get in shape for this film, gave up smoking, and ended up hurting his Achilles tendon in one of those profound ironies that indicates that maybe the gods were not pleased with what was happening in this film. Pitt certainly looks good, not just in terms of taking several opportunities to display the line of his nude body, but in how he carries himself as Achilles. The whole idea is that this guy is the greatest warrior on the face of the planet and Pitt exudes that with the way he strides across the sands of Troy. Even more impressive is the choreography for the fights, because Pitt’s movements are so smooth and powerful, especially compared with that of Eric Bana’s Hector, that you do not doubt that this guy is in a league by himself as a warrior. I also like the way he uses the distinctive form of his shield when fighting. They thought this part out quite a bit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy - The Director’s Cut! Click Here

The fight choreography was worked out by Simon Crane, the film’s stunt coordinator and second unit director, who describes Achilles as fighting with a boxing style but with the velocity of a speed skater and the agility of a panther. They also come up with a nice touch in that Achilles looks slightly to the side at his opponent until he is ready to come in for the kill. The best fight sequences of “Troy” are when Achilles is fighting. The giant battle sequences of computerized soldiers are not as impressive, mainly because the camera is always in motion and the cutting is so fast that we are left with an impression of the battle rather than always being able to tell what is going on (which has become my constant complaint with most movies with large battle sequences).

Bana does a good job of capturing Hector’s nobility without turning him into a marble statue, while Peter O’Toole fills the role of Priam naturally. On the Trojan side the problematic character is Paris (Orlando Bloom), again because of the writing more than the performance. Priam has negotiated peace between Troy and the Sparta of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), but that is destroyed when Paris persuades Helen (Diane Kruger) to run away with him. Both Hector and Priam know that Paris is wrong and their reasons for supporting him and thereby dooming Troy ring hollow (the less than stellar “Helen of Troy” television miniseries did a nice job of providing a solid motivation for the Trojans to protect Helen).

It you want to draw a clear distinction between Homer’s story of Achilles and that of Benioff it is that the former is about the rage of Achilles (see the first line of the “Iliad”) and the latter adds an equally strong love element. The one character whose role is most inflated in this version is that of Briseis (Rose Byrne), the Trojan slave girl who comes between Achilles and Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the king of kings for the Greeks. This change becomes the reasoning behind how the film rewrites the end game of the Trojan War, although I still do not understand why some of the key characters get to live happily ever after. But since Pitt’s performance dominates the film and he is clearly the horse that director Wolfgang Petersen is riding to make the whole thing work, it makes sense that he has to be around until the very end.

The good news is that when I teach mythology after this DVD comes out my students will probably enjoy attacking Benioff’s changes in the original stories of Greek mythology in their papers. I think this will definitely help them understand why the writings of Homer and the other ancients are considered classics.

Features 2 new extras: “Troy In Focus” a 23 minute interview and a new 5 minute introduction by Wolfgang Peterson. Most of the other special features have been ported over from the previous edition.

First the most important question is whether or not this double dip is worth it? Absolutely because the additional footage only enhances the film giving it additional depth. The transfer is striking (regardless of which format)as well. In many respects this isn’t a double dip because we get a film that is superior to the original version.

Unlike “The Illiad” Wolfgang Petersen’s film “Troy” seemed too short and for good reason; Petersen had to trim the film down to a shorter length for its theatrical release. Luckily Warner gave Petersen the opportunity to revisit this epic film and add more meat to the bones of a film that had the look of an epic but was missing much of the emotional depth.

Petersen restores roughly 32 minutes to the film giving additional depth to the various relationships in the film. While “Troy” isn’t a perfect epic, it’s much improved. James Horner’s score is still occasionally obtrusive but the overall impact of Petersen’s film with its marvelous performances from Brian Cox (who steals almost every scene he’s in), the quiet power of Eric Bana and even the gravity of Pitt as Achilles is far more effective than the previous version.

Image quality is superb for both the DVD and Blu Ray verisons of the film (the Blu Ray, of course, gets the nod because the images are much sharper, crisper with better definition but the DVD isn’t too shabby either). Audio for the Blu Ray is presented lossless while the DVD’s audio sounds terrific given the limitations of the format. Colors are a bit bolder here than on the previous version to my eyes.

It appears that a lot of the special features from the previous edition have been ported over and the only new things are the introduction by Petersen as well as a retrospective 23 minute interview where Petersen discusses the genesis of the original film and this project.

This film version much more closely resembles what he had in mind when he took on the project. Greek mythology purists will find some of the changes disturbing but some of the changes enhance the film pulling the strands of the story together a little tighter.

First off, this is NOT a Cesar Millan training DVD. This dog training DVD is with Paul Owens, the “Original” Dog Whisperer. Paul Owens wrote the book “The Dog Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training” in 1999- well before Millan came on the TV scene. Paul Owens has also recently published the outstanding book “Puppy Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Guide to Early Training and Care”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dog Whisperer: Vol 2 - Solving Common Behavior Problems! Click Here

This is a two-DVD set and is 2.5 hours long. The production quality of this set is top-notch. In my opinion, it is very reasonably priced- especially considering what the cost would be if you had a private trainer come to your home and cover all these items with you in person!

Paul Owens takes you through solving the different canine challenges step-by-step in a way that is not overwhelming or condescending. He shows you how to get your dog to behave without raising your voice, or losing your temper. It is very easy to follow his techniques, because he helps you understand why your dog may be doing a particular behavior (and how you may actually be contributing to it!).

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dog Whisperer: Vol 2 - Solving Common Behavior Problems! Click Here

Don’t think that Mr. Owens tells you to toss out treats and hope for good behavior from your dog. In a warm and easygoing style, he teaches you how to replace your dog’s undesirable behaviors with acceptable ones. He teaches you how to set boundaries as to what is acceptable and what is not in a manner that does not create fear in your dog (or you!). He shows how his compassionate method of training builds trust and enhances the bond between you and your dog.

Note that your dog should have some degree of basic obedience skills (such as ’sit’ and ‘down’) under his or her belt before working on the exercises in this DVD set. This DVD set is also not geared for severe behavior problems, such as aggression or separation anxiety- consult a qualified canine behavior consultant for these type of issues.

This dog training DVD set covers behavior problems such as:

Barking/Whining (indoor and outdoor)

Begging at Table

Bolting Out the Door

Chewing/Destruction

Stealing

Getting on Furniture

Housetraining/Crate Training

Jumping

Barking in Yard

Digging

Eating Forbidden Items

Mouthing, Nipping, and Biting

Lunging/Pulling on Leash

Meeting Other Dogs

Even better, he includes information regarding how to use and wean off treats, being safe when out and about with your dog, and clicker training.

Paul Owens is the “Original” Dog Whisperer. His latest video is outstanding, and I highly recommend it!

Paul Owens has long been a well-respected name among dog professionals as well as the dog-owning public, for good reason. His training methods are kind, gentle, and compassionate, and are grounded in the science of how dogs think and learn.

This DVD will teach you many things, but throughout, you will learn how to better communicate with your dog so that he understands what you would like him to do. That in itself is invaluable. Everyday issues such as darting out the front door and grabbing things from countertops are covered, and a variety of dogs are used. Paul explains what to do if the dog does not respond in the way you would like, which is very helpful. He teaches you how to break training down into small, manageable steps so your dog can perform the behaviors successfully.

There is no jerking, kicking, or other force-based methods here, yet the dogs learn what is expected very quickly. Paul obviously has a great love for dogs, and his DVD makes training fun and enjoyable for both dogs and people. There is a lot included on this 2-disk set for a very reasonable price, and I highly recommend it.

I bought this movie for my collection of 60’s biker flicks and rapidly became sorry that I had. Thinking that Dern and Ladd were somewhat acceptable in the thoroughly enjoyable “The Wild Angels”, I decided to give them another try with “The Rebel Rousers”. The title implies an exciting biker romp but after watching this, instead of excitement, I felt complete numbness…What dialog there is seems adlibbed, makes no sense, or is hard to understand, the supposedly Mexican people, which the small town is populated with look remarkably Causasian and have the worst phoney accents I’ve ever heard (they were so bad it wasn’t even funny), and the bike scenes are rare and poorly planned. Everything about this movie was poorly planned… I should have been warned by the advertised plot, knowing that the bikers would be scheming on a pregnant woman, but I didn’t expect her to be 8 months pregnant….I’ll bet the actors who played in this movie are mortified that it can still be viewed… I thought that Hells Belles was the worst movie I had ever seen, but this one has just taken it’s place, making Hells Belles seem like a pretty good movie in comparison. Save your money or you’ll be really sorry.

Hilariously bad! I love old Drive-In style biker flicks and this one is even worse than She-Devils On Wheels. A real gem of bad editing (the music is so loud at times you can’t hear the dialogue), poor acting & blatant ad-libbing. This movie must have taken a whole week to make. All the bikes are Triumphs but Bruce Dern reads from a Harley-Davidson Service Manual. I loved Nicholson’s prison striped pants with the dirty seat and a hole in them. I laughed my but off on this one.

This film is based upon the real life love affair between Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton, wife of the British Ambassador to Naples. Real life husband and wife team, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, as the star crossed lovers, give magnificent performances. Ms. Leigh is absolutely enchanting in the role of Lady Hamilton. Mr. Olivier is likewise effective in his role, though Ms. Leigh is definitely the star of this show. The supporting cast also gives superb performances, particularly Alan Mowbray in the role of the cuckolded husband, Lord William Hamilton.

The story tells the viewer of the rise of Emma Hart, a blacksmith’s daughter with a scarlet past, who by dint of her beauty and determination rose out of poverty and obscurity to become the wife of Lord William Hamilton, the British Ambassador to Naples. After their marriage, she is known as Lady Hamilton and becomes the toast of Naples. She then meets Admiral Horatio Nelson and her life changes, yet again. Defying social conventions, she and the also married Nelson begin a love affair that was to become public knowledge and lead to great scandal. What happened to them is memorably dramatized.

This is a wonderful film that all who love period pieces and historical dramas will enjoy.

Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier make a beautiful pair as they portray Lady Emma Hamilton and Lord Horatio Nelson in THAT HAMILTON WOMAN! Trivia buffs should know that this was Winston Churchill’s favourite film; he had it screened many times. Only part of the astonishing life of Emma, Lady Hamilton is told in this big, sprawling Alexander Korda movie, which makes of Napoleon an earlier Hitler and of Naples an 18th Century warning to America. Her real name was Amy Lyon. Before she married aging Sir William Hamilton, British Prime Minister to the Kingdom of Naples, she had lived in the London slums, passed from hand to hand, bore several illegitimate children and posed as Circe, Cassandra, Nature, Joan of Arc and Mary Magdalene for George Romney, the great English portrait painter. At Naples, she created endless scandal, became the crony of Queen Maria Carolina and met young English Naval Captain Horatio Nelson. From then on, their lives were constantly intertwined, making choice chatter for London gossips. Meanwhile, the young captain chased Napoleon’s fleet around the Mediterranean, lost an eye and an arm, became the idolised “Victor of the Nile”, the immortal Lord Nelson who died of a sharpshooter’s ball at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). Producer Korda makes of his heroism an epic of British defiance to dictators, of Emma’s sordid life - a romance in the lush PRISONER OF ZENDA style.

Nixon is available for streaming or downloading.

When Anthony Hopkins was cast as Richard Nixon in Oliver Stone’s bio of the 37th President, many were leery of the casting choice. I myself pictured Hopkins doing a combination of Nixon and Hannibal Lecter: “I’m not a crook — and if anyone thinks so, I’ll eat their liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti …. SLURP!!” However, Hopkins does do a marvelous job and disappears into the role without becoming a standup comedian’s caricature. Even though Nixon does and says vile things throughout the film, the audience still has sympathy for the character — even those like me who found the real Richard Nixon dispicable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Nixon! Click Here

Stone portrays Nixon as a tragic figure who had the intelligence and the electoral mandate to elevate himself and his administration to greatness, but let it all slip away by becoming bogged down in the quagmire of Watergate. Nixon complains incessantly about how the Kennedys are everything he is not. However, it becomes clear that his hatred of the Kennedys is based as much on his loathing of himself as on any real scorn shown him by the “Eastern establishment.”

Stone, as in JFK, takes certain liberties with Nixon’s story and acknowledges as much in a disclaimer before the story begins. Even those who believe President Kennedy was assassinated as the result of a conspiracy, for example, would find it hard to believe that Richard Nixon was involved, even tacitly, in the plot to kill JFK. Stone also takes liberties with his portrayal of Richard and Pat Nixon’s marital relationship. Even though some incidents are no doubt true, it’s pretty clear that some scenes between the two are conjecture on Stone’s part.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Nixon! Click Here

However, these are minor quibbles. Nixon is a penetrating, engrossing biography that both portrays him as a ruthless, vicous, paranoic lunatic and a character who elicits sympathy from the audience. The supporting cast is amazing and includes James Woods, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris, David Hyde Pierce, Annabeth Gish, Kevin Dunn, J.T. Walsh, Powers Booth, Paul Sorvino, Edward Herrmann, Larry Hagman, Dan Hedeya, Tony LoBianco, Bob Hoskins, E.G. Marshall, David Paymer, Tony Goldwyn, Fuyvush Finkel and Saul Rubinek. However, the standout supporting player is Joan Allen as Pat Nixon who is a dead ringer for the former First Lady. Allen’s portrayal shows the emotional pain Mrs. Nixon endured behind the seemingly placid facade she presented to the American public. Coupled with Hopkins’ Nixon, it’s an acting tour de force that carries the film.

After all the vile things he does during the course of the film, Nixon, the night before his resignation, is reduced to staring at a portrait of his idolized archenemy John F. Kennedy and proclaiming that “… when they look at you, they see what they want to be. When they look at me, they see what they are.” Even the most die-hard member of Nixon’s enemies’ list can’t help but feel pity for Richard Nixon during this scene. It’s a great achievement by Oliver Stone to make this bitter, corrupt and wretched man worthy of the audience’s sympathy at the same time we disdain him.

Oliver Stone’s fascinating insight into the Nixon administration is not for everyone’s delight. The closest thing to a “JFK” sequal, ‘Nixon’ rolls all the players into a ball of naughtiness & takes it from there. Hard to keep up with if un-familiar with the facts surrounding the ‘watergate-scandal’, but if you know your homework it’s alot of fun. Superb casting,I must say, Stone started this epic right after “Natural Born Killers” so it has all the internal flare of film-making. Immense enjoyment on DVD, this film IS very under-rated,losing ‘Best Picture’ oscar to Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart”… you can see how not everybody wants this film around in the long-run. Thumbs up!

This is very cool! I was at the Fangoria convention in Pasadena and saw a sneak of this DVD. It’s basically the “greatest hits” from the greatest horror movies from recent years, as well as a few classics. As I watched it with other conventioneers, it struck me what a great party DVD this was. People were cheering as each great boogeyman came on screen - Pinhead, then Freddy, then Chucky, then Leatherface - a regular parade. So I’m excited to get this for my own Halloween party - just throw it on and let it play.
What’s REALLY cool though is all the extra stuff. There’s an audio commentary from Robert Englund, and he’s really quite good. There’s also movie facts about each scene you can turn on or off, and a trivia game and cool name-that-frame game. Since I can’t always watch DVDs in my dorm if someone else is watching the TV, I can pop this into my DVD-ROM and access the DVD-ROM features, which are pretty cool. All in all I was pretty impressed by what I saw, and am excited about getting my own copy. It would have been easy to just throw on some … scenes and make a long horror commercial, but they really put a lot of thought and effort into making this very cool. I’m a real horror fan, so I am happy to say it delivered the goods. I definitely recommend.

If you’re a horror fan you HAVE to own this. Imagine taking the most frightening scenes from your favorite horror movies and having them all together - Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Pinhead, Chucky etc. - in one DVD.Boogeymen has 18 scenes in all and they really did pick the best ones. In addition to the classics like Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street , there were some really freaky scenes from movies I have never heard of. It also has some pretty cool extras like pop-up trivia for each scene, audio commentary by Robert Englund, interactive horror trivia games, and a very cool “Legends of the Boogeymen” which is basically histories of the characters themselves.Boogeymen is also a great way to introduce someone to horror; it’s like horror 101. And it’s a total Halloween party DVD. It’s fun to re-live some of these famous scenes and to discover some new movies you’ve never heard of. I definitely recommend this.

The first episode of The Inspector debuted in theaters alongside the James Bond adventure Thunderball in 1965, and fits perfectly with the whole secret agent craze of the 60s. And though each episode was originally released in theaters, the Inspector cartoons also appeared alongside the Pink Panther on Saturday Morning programming for several years.

The character of The Inspector - clearly based on Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther films though his name is never given - bumbles his way through case after case with the aid of his trusty sidekick Deux Deux (pronounced Dudu). Deux Duex is Spanish, but somehow has found his way to the French Surete, and a running gag has The Inspector instructing him that he should say “Oui” instead of “Si” all the time.

The Inspector originally faced off against a host of unique villains, including The Blotch, The Mad Bomber, Captain Clamity, and Two-Faced Harry in a grand total of 34 kid-friendly cartoon shorts. Unfortunately, this DVD will only include half of the series (the other half probably being released seperately in a few months’ time).

The slapstick shorts in this series represent to me some of the very best to come from the DePatie-Freleng studio (along with The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection).

Very highly recommended!

Just to clear up the misleading title of this set, the Pink Panther does not appear in these cartoons. It seems that MGM home video felt that nobody would know who The Inspector was, so they had to tag him as one of the Pink Panther’s friends.

This cartoon series is historically important, produced in the late 1960’s after all but two of the major studios gave up producing new cartoons for the theaters. Friz Freleng (formerly directing for Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes & Merry Melodies) teamed with David DePatie to form a new Animation studio, Depatie-Freleng, after Warner shut its doors. In an ironic twist Warner then contracted with them to continue producing Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies for theaters!

But around that same time Depatie-Freleng produced an animated title sequence for the first Pink Panther movie. It was so popular that United Artists contracted with them to produce a series of Pink Panther Cartoons. Unlike the title sequence, the Pink Panther was no longer persued by The Inspector.

However, later that year The Inspector got his own theatrical cartoon series, based not on Peter Sellers but on the short, big-nosed character in the title sequences. He was now teamed up with a spanish assistant who joined him in persuing some stylistic villians like a mad bomber who looked like a hairy ink spot, or a three headed black shadow that can take on many forms to conceal itself.

Pat Harrington (who later went on to be the handyman Schneider in ONE DAY AT A TIME) voiced The Inspector, giving a slight impression of Peter Sellers. He was joined by veteran voice actors such as Paul Frees & Larry Storch (Agarn in F TROOP). Animation directors for the old Warner Brothers studio also joined the Depatie-Freleng studios to produce these classic 1960’s cartoons. And the quality of their work shows when comparing these to other cartoons produced at the same time from studios such as Walter Lantz.

The Inspector series was retired in 1969 and sold to NBC television as a part of the Pink Panther show. Laugh tracks were added to these theatrical cartoons which gave them a television feel, in general theatrical cartoons ran on TV without the laugh tracks. The title sections were shortened & given a new music track for the TV show.

This collection gathers the first 17 cartoons of the 34 cartoon series with their original theatrical titles & music intact.
