Every situation comedy (sitcom) has to come up with a unique angle to view reality through, in the hopes of finding the humor in life. In the past, this was generally done in family situations with “zany” characters. That type of sitcom has also largely been done to death. Even the “group of funny friends” situation is starting to be overdone. Friends did it. How I Met Your Mother is currently doing it (very well I might add), Seinfeld did it, etc.

In “The Big Bang Theory” we are thrust into the lives of 3 genius level scientists, and one super-genius level scientist. The story needed its “Spock” or “Mr. Data” to explain to the rest of us what on Earth they were talking about, so we got Kaley Cuoco playing the lay-person’s character of “Penny.” As the genius scientists have to explain to her what they are talking about, it clues the rest of us in too.
The result of the situation this comedy is taking place in, is an inside look into a world most of us have never seen, nor do we understand. As someone who took both levels of introductory physics (and passed!) in college, I can tell you that their subject matter is accurate, and also way over the undergraduate level. The characters are pure genius, and pretty much every episode is hilarious and filled with heart.

I highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a good sitcom to watch. It isn’t a “science show” — no more than “Sports Night” was a “sports show.” It is a comedy show, and it is darn funny! The Big Bang Theory is now entering its third season, and I strongly recommend you all support it so we can keep this quality entertainment on the air!
Started watching this half way through the 1st season. Became a fan immediately. I even bought 5 more DVDs for my friends and family as Christmas gifts and now they are hooked too. The writing is smart and fun. I catch something new every time I watch it, whether it is a prop, clothing or dialogue. Makes me have a good laugh every time. I can’t wait for the 2nd season to come out on DVD even though I have watched all the episodes so far. I know I have missed things in each episode

Until I watched this DVD, I have had no interest in that God-forsaken country called Afghanistan. Skipping the countertop scenario, our story opens in a small town on Christmas Eve. The kids are excited about all the presents they will get the next day, until Laura Carrot’s dad has trouble with his car that may cost him his job. In the quiet that follows, Bob decides telling the story of Nicholas should help.
And so we travel back to Greece in the third century. Aided by Larry (who tries to move the story forward and make it more festive), Bob tell us about a young boy named Nicholas. This is a bit more of a serious story than you might normally expect. They do a fairly decent job of retelling the legend of St. Nicholas without getting into the ramifications of the modern day legend.
But this video is still funny. Most of the humor comes from Larry, who keeps exasperating Bob by trying to fit the story into the Santa legend. Of course, the costumes Mr. Lunt wears as he helps Nicholas in the second half are laugh out loud funny as well. Especially the second one.
Speaking of whom, Mr. Lunt does the silly song this go around. “Donuts for Benny” starts out fun but gets super silly at the end. I loved it! I swear the music reminded me of a classic Christian song, but I couldn’t place which one it was.
The music is great on this video as a whole. There are several original songs, but they also parody Christmas classics like “Deck the Halls” and “Jingle Bells.”
While a tad more on the serious side, this is a real gem. Get this now, and your family will enjoy it for years to come.

this can really open up doors for a separation between what has become Santa and the roots of St. Nicholas.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because of the imagined snow and the sheep that became like reindeer.. i really think they stretched it too much and I’m not sure that younger kids will be able to separate it out between what is being imagined and what they are really trying to portray about the actual story.

Movie Title: Road House

Forget “Dirty Dancing”: Patrick Swayze’s career peaked in this and the similarly underrated “Point Break.” It doesn’t quite reach the stratospheric heights (or is it depths?) of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s deservedly legendary “Commando,” but “Road House” is still the stuff of which B-movie legend is made. Starring Swayze as the head bouncer at a rowdy Southern bar called the Double Deuce, “Road House” derives its appeal largely from the ingenious idea of having a bunch of rednecks for villains. You get to see Swayze’s Dalton, perhaps the only Mercedes-driving, philosophy-majoring bouncer in history, take on a seemingly endless succession of slack-jawed inbred troglodytes as he tames the Double Deuce and ensures victory for truth, justice, and the American way.
The Double Deuce is one of the those bars where it seems half the patrons are on parole, but that doesn’t stop them from throwing fists at the proverbial drop of a hat. I’ve always believed that bar fights held vast, untapped potential for the action genre, and this movie more than delivers the goods in that department. There are about five solid bar brawls in “Road House,” with glass flying around, Dalton employing his martial-arts expertise against dimwitted thugs in tight jeans, and blind guitar whiz Jeff Healey providing some rock-solid background music. Suffice to say, if you’re looking for a fair and dignified look at life in the South, you won’t find it here. A trip to the Double Deuce promises to be as nasty and brutish as Hobbes’s state of nature, and a lot more fun to watch.
And even for those who can think of nothing that beats Patrick Swayze as an action hero, it gets better: they got Sam Elliott, one of America’s most underrated actors ever, to play Dalton’s long-haired, hard-living friend Wade! With an unkempt white mane and that unmistakable Southern drawl, Wade dispenses plenty of rapier wit along with some …-whippings before outliving his usefulness. You also get to see Ben Gazzara, slumming it as the snake-like villain Brad Wesley, somehow manage to maintain a semblance of dignity in a movie that seems committed to insulting your intelligence every chance it gets. And as Dalton’s love interest, Kelly Lynch adds little in the way of plot advancement or dialogue, but she does provide some nice scenery… buying it.
To avoid any confusion, by rating this movie 5 stars I am NOT suggesting that it is in the same league as GLADIATOR, THE LORD OF THE RINGS (trilogy), GONE WITH THE WIND or any other top-calibre flick. However, this film doesn’t try to compete with the likes of top-rated movies, and that’s the beauty of it.

The story is based on a top-notch bar bouncer (Patrick Swayze) who is compelled to call in his old mentor (Sam Elliot) for an especially tough project. Instead of just busting heads and throwing hoodlums out of the bar, these guys end up having to save the whole town!
This is a B-movie all the way. In my opinion, it COULD be the greatest B-movie of all time. In short, despite being stupid it is also immensely entertaining. The plot is contrived. There are aspects of it that are way, way beyond being remotely believable. It seems the whole movie was inspired by pushing the envelope on the concept of the bar brawl.

Despite its limited plot, the DVD is surprisingly watchable. I’ve seen it at least 4 times and it’s always fun to re-watch. Patrick Swazye’s considerable acting talents are wasted in this farce, but that’s OK. The film contains a nice sampling of gratuitous nudity, and Kelly Lynch is not exactly hard on the eyes.
So, if you want to watch a movie with minimum seriousness and maximum action, hang a left into the Roadhouse tonight. You won’t be disappointed.

Movie Title: Underworld - Evolution

The start of the new year is usually pretty slow when it comes to big films. Most of the time its when films not deemed summer blockbuster or holiday season worthy get scheduled for release. Len Wiseman’s Underworld: Evolution is a step up from most of the garbage and fillers that end up being shown in January. This sequel to the Kate Beckinsale’s 2003 gothic-actioner continues where the first film left off but with the increase in budget and less of an introductory feel to the characters. The film ends up looking quite good with action sequences that tops the first film and actually provides a story that adds to the mythology created in the first one.

Right from the beginning with its vampire knights and rabid, peasant werewolves, Underworld: Evolution shows that the film will be more rollercoaster ride than a study in character and themes. This is a good thing and Wiseman doesn’t try to deviate from this formula. He knows just exactly what his films trying to do and doesn’t try to overanalyze the situations. The production design still has the European look to it from the sets and location (coincidentally set in Eastern Europe) to the costume and prop designs. The film also makes heavy use of blue-filters to give the film that industrial look. Sometimes the sequences even takes on the look of a crisp, black and white film when the action is set at night with minimal light.
The story continues the struggle between the vampire clans and the lycan rebels from the first film. This time around Selene and the lycan hybrid, Michael are hunted by both sides as they struggle to search for the answers to their questions about Viktor’s (Selene’s vampire primogenitor and one of the clan elders) betrayal of her trust and the shared past of both vampire and lycan clans. Wiseman and McBride (the film’s co-writer with Wiseman) do a good job in summarizing the basic plot points from the first film through dream-like sequences whenever blood is drank by the last surviving elder (Marcus as played by genre veteran Tony Curran). One doesn’t need to see the first film to get the gist of what’s going on in this sequel, but it’ll still help if one had some knowledge going in. What i found particularly intriguing was the past history of Marcus and how his past tied in with Viktor’s, Selene and in the end that of Michael’s. An even older character than Marcus makes an appearance that helps tie the two films together.

The cast itself did an adequate to admirable job in doing their parts. Thankfully, Wiseman limited Scott Speedman’s scene time with dialogue to a minimum. Speedman pretty much spends most of the film in his hybrid form and performing fight scenes. I consider this decision a major plus for the film. Sir Derek Jacobi adds abit of gravitas to the film as an elder, behind-the-scenes manipulator or the two clans. But in the end the film is all about Kate Beckinsale and she’s never looked better. She delviers her lines with enough conviction to make them believable, but at the same time shows just how much she’s having. It didn’t hurt the film that she again gets to parade around in black, tight leather and latex and in one sequence pretty much nothing. She also does a pretty convincing job of being a kick-ass action heroine. I wouldn’t mind it if she took on an action-film here and there to supplement her more serious works.
The action scenes were better than the first film, but not so over-the-top that they go from cool to cartoonish like most action-film sequels. The effects work was more polished and this could be due to a higher budget and a better FX crew. The shapechanging from human to lycan was done much better and had less of the computer-generated look to them. The climactic showdown in the end with Selene was action-packed and well-done for a film that was pretty much dumped by Sony Pictures in the graveyard of the film season. This climactic showdown had the audience cheering the most and deservingly so.
In the end, Underworld: Evolution was a very entertaining sequel that didn’t try to go beyond its gothic-action film pedigree. I could see this series continue to become a trilogy if Wiseman and McBride have more stories to tell about the vampire clans, the lycans, and Selene. The two films are similar to Snipes Blade trilogy, but this time sexier and with abit more an engaging story than the Daywalker series. The film wasn’t anything to write to the Academy voters but it did its job in entertaining the audience. 7.5/10
Like some people I like to read reviews by critics before I go see a movie. As is usually the case with these so called critics, they are way off the mark with this movie. I guess they go into the movie expecting sir Anthony Hopkins to generate a great “Acting” performance as in Howard’s End. Hey, this is a horror/action movie you idiots. Even some critics pointed there negativity on the movie being humorless. HUMORLESS? Last time I checked it wasn’t a comedy either.
Many critics also claimed the story to be confusing. I guarantee you they didn’t go back and watch the first movie to refresh their minds of the back-story. If the were to, they would see that the story flowed from the prior movie just fine. Critics!! They drive you crazy and unfortunately sometimes hold the fate of a movie in their hands. Thank god for sites like Amazon to get the word out that this is a very good movie.
Kate Beckinsale is the hottest vampiress there is for sure. The story for me made perfect sense as they have an earyly back-story revisited with the history of the sons of Corvinous (William-bitten by a wolf and Markus-bitten by a bat) that are the basis of this movie.
The special effects are convincing and that’s all that matters to me. Nothing like Star Wars for sure, but good enough for this type of movie. And man is there a lot of blood….especially in the last scene. Fun stuff. Many actors return including cameos by Lucian, Kraven, Viktor, and a little more from Amelia. There really isn’t a “war” between Lycans and vampires as in the previous movie. It’s more a pesonal war between Selene(who discovers her real importance) and Markus( who was always defiant when it came to his brother William and he never liked Viktor much).
All in all a great movie that I would watch again and surely buy when the DVD (hopefully an exteneded version) comes out.
One negative in the movie which I didn’t follow. After watching the first movie I got the impression they were in the Unites States. I mean the hospital where Michael worked all the employees spoke English. In the second movie, everyone speaks Russian. I don’t understand that at all. I does kind of make you ask the question …this negative (although annoying) certainly doesn’t take away from this fun-filled action/horror flick. Let’s see another one soon.

Movie Title: Appleseed Ex Machina

The visuals are nothing short of stunning, especially in HD. It’s worth the download just to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque slow motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo’s style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don’t feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you make something with animation like that you’d run into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of cut scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The story is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Trek villain, the Borg. There’s even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it’s foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos’s DNA who becomes Deunan’s new partner after her lover falls in battle.
If I were to make a criticism I’d say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too late, making the final resolution a little anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn’t quite believe it at first. Also, and this may be a good thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won’t have to have seen the first one to appreciate this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it’s a good film and worth a watch.
The first Appleseed film (from 2004) was quite a treat. The cell-shaded CG graphics looked very good for the time. Complementing this obvious standout aspect was an intriguing story and an excellent soundtrack. It’s worth noting that the story, in particular, felt like a genuinely original re-animation of sci-fi concepts.
Fast forward to today and we have the sequel, Ex Machina. It’s pretty simple to separate what works and doesn’t in Machina:
GRAPHICS:
The level of detail in the graphics has improved dramatically, and characters look less like geometric objects with textures painted on and more like genuine people. The cityscapes are even more impressive. Furthermore, the action is more frequent and looks even slicker.
My two gripes with the visuals are these: First, in what is all too common in action movies like this, the best scene is the first one. Hands down. I don’t understand why so many directors feel the need to frontload their movies. I will say that the movie is less guilty of this than its predecessor. Second, movement outside of action scenes still looks a bit jerky. Some might fault mo-cap technology, but for my money, Final Fantasy: Advent Children boasted some mighty believable movement.
STORY/WRITING:
Here’s where Ex Machina falls apart. The story here isn’t anything you haven’t seen executed better in anime/other entertainment. Compared to the plot of the first movie- which created a unique sci-fi framework, this one felt like a filler episode. The villain was cliche, the story far less complex/meaningful than the first, and any intrigue or mystery the story might yet have held was ruined by the horrible writing. The film tasks itself with letting the viewer in on a number of concepts necessary to the plot, but rather than integrate them seamlessly into the dialog, it bashes the viewer over the head with them.
MUSIC:
The soundtrack wasn’t bad- I just didn’t notice it most of the time. This constitutes a slight letdown considering how often I return to the soundtrack from the first movie.
OVERALL: Ex Machina is a sight to behold and warrants a blu-ray purchase. Just don’t expect it to expand much on the ideas introduced in the first Appleseed.

Movie Title: Battle for Terra

First off, the still screen images and the DVD cover art (if you can call it that) really don’t do this great little independent film justice. If you’ve seen the design of the Terrans you might think this film is silly or only for kids. It’s not. It’s great, moving, beautiful to look at and probably the best Sci-Fi movie and animated film I’ve seen in quite some time. This film has an ending that no Pixar or Dreamworks director would touch. It doesn’t leave you with that empty feeling like a lot of animated films do - at feeling of disconnect. It’s a heart-felt film with big ideas. As one reviewer said, it made me think “What would I do it a situation like this?” If you’re worried about the celebrity voices or stunt casting, don’t. David Cross is perfect and actually quite serious in his role. Evan Rachel Wood makes you care for her Terran character. James Garner is haunting as an elder Terran. Justin Long is funny as usual. Luke Wilson was a surprise as well. The director has created a perfect little world that I want to go back to again and I might just upgrade to Blu-ray for this movie alone. The music is terrific. If you’re a lover of world-building sci-fi and great animated films you owe it to yourself to buy it. I recommend this highly to any fans of animated scif-i movies like Light Years, Fantastic Planet, Heavy Metal and Titan A.E. just to name a few.
The Battle for Terra was an independently produced 3D animation film that was in theaters in May. It played in some festivals like Tribeca and won Best Animated Feature at Ottowa Animation Festival, which is THE animation festival (Oscar nom Persepolis won the year prior). It got rave reviews from film critics like Ebert and Variety, but was purchased by Lionsgate who didn’t market it properly, hence a disappointing box office for this gusty little animated film. Which is especially a shame because in 3D it was achingly beautiful, definitely the very best use of 3D I’ve seen. Felt like you were swimming right along in that other world with gorgeous creatures like winged blue whales that roam among the clouds.

Also notable was the top notch casting. Evan Rachel Wood is especially excellent as the voice of adorable alien heroine, and Brian Cox haunting as the creepy Bush-like warmonger General. David Cross, one of the the best comedians out there right now, gave brief bits of comic relief as testy robot sidekick.
A great movie for families, who can enjoy the visuals and drama while giving kids an intelligent intro into ethics, environmentalism, ethnocentrism, and more. This is how family movies should be–entertainment that challenges kids to think.

Red plays a hat check boy who’s nuts over Lucy, a sassy showgirl who pays him no attention whatsoever. All of this changes when Skelton hits a $75,000 jackpot…Lucy agrees to get engaged to Red although she has a crush on Gene Kelly. Red mistakenly drinks a “mickey finn” which was intended for Kelly - in order to prevent him from attending the engagement party - and the rest of the film is a clever dream sequence with Lucy as Mme.DuBarry, Skelton as a King and Kelly the master of derring-do…Zero Mostel is amusing as the comedy psychic and there’s a cute cameo by Lana Turner. While this movie version of the famous Broadway show which starred Ethel Merman and Bert Lahr was completely white-washed in order to pacify the blue-nosed Hays office, this film should at least be a fun-fest for those who love Lucy. Critics were especially harsh on this movie when it was released back in 1943 because the original show was bawdy, risque and totally charming: however, Lucy fans will be astonished at how gorgeous she looks here.
Great cast! Red, Lucy, Gene & a young & (relatively) slender & hirsute Zero Mostel! Plus the great inimitable Virginia O’Brien, queen of deadpan plus Tommy Dorsey & his orchestra, Dick Haymes, the Pied Pipers. How could it go wrong? Well, it could have retained more of the original Cole Porter score, bujt that’s Hollywood & the plot is standard Hollywood formula as well. You could replay it with Bob Hope or Danny Kaye & it would come out virtually the same. But I’m glad it was Red, because as this movie demonstrates, he was a naturally funny - make that VERY FUNNY - man, possibly the funniest comic of all.

First, for those that are just looking for this answer, this Conan the Barbarian is The Director’s Cut with its alternate ending, which John Milius intended to have. Nowhere on this DVD will you find the original ending in the DVD extras, etc., but I do want to say that this ending is not much different from the original, so if you have not seen the original ending, you will not be missing much at all. It also has an additional scene with Subotai and Conan dialoging. That’s all that I remember being different from the original version. As for Conan the Destroyer, I don’t recall any difference.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE CONAN CHARACTER:
Conan is the barbarian/warrior character created by writer Robert E. Howard (1906-1936). His stories take place in the Hyborian Age (a mystical age between the sinking of Atlantis and the beginning of civilization, which was created by Howard as well). Much of the Conan artwork was painted by artist Frank Frazetta (1928-), which is probably Frazetta’s better-known work.

I’ve read that at one point in Howard’s career, he once explained how he created the Conan character and the warrior’s many tales. He once said that he conjured in his mind, a dead warrior king bearing an axe, and soon felt as if his character actually oppressed his very thoughts, forcing him to tell the tales of Conan, a king long forgotten by mankind. Howard went as far as to say, that he feared that if he did not write as the warrior commanded, the warrior king would strike him down with his axe.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO THE CONAN MOVIES:
Only two movies have been made up till now on Howard’s character, Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984). Most people (as I am) are fans of the first, and not the second, though the second was entertaining in its on ways.
No joke, Conan the Barbarian is my All-Time favorite movie. I first saw this film when I was young, and remember that back in those days this movie was “the movie to see”, with its action packed storyline, wonderful cinematography, and its beautifully composed musical score. Not to mention, starring Mr. Olympia himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who starred in both films. Conan was Arnold’s first big-time role after winning his last Mr. Olympia in 1980, so Arnold was still gee-golly-huge and ideal for the part. Nevertheless, this first movie also starred renowned actor, James Earl Jones, who plays the very charismatic cult leader, Thulsa Doom, and with a voice like his, who can deny that he’s the perfect fit for that role.
Oliver Stone (a fan of the Conan novels) co-wrote the first screenplay of Conan the Barbarian. He actually had an entire screenplay for the movie, which was quickly bought out by producer Dino DeLaurentis and modified by writer/director, John Milius, who also co-wrote and directed Red Dawn. John envisioned on making Conan a trilogy, while assistant producer, Edward Summer, intended the Conan films to be a huge series, much like the 007 series. Either of which would have been nice for us fans, but neither person played any part in the creation of our only sequel. Instead, two writers from Marvel Comics were brought onboard, Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, who wrote the initial screenplay for the sequel, which was drastically changed by writer Stanley Mann. Director Richard Fleischer, who also directed Tora! Tora! Tora! in 1970 and Red Sonja in 1985, directed Conan the Destroyer. I think the only thing the two movies shared in common were Arnold and producer Dino DeLaurentis; this is why you find extreme differences between the two finished works.
On another note, many celebrities co-stared in these movies, like NBA star Wilt Chamberlain, and model Grace Jones. But one person out of the rest, whom I would like to point out, is Hawaiian Gerry Lopez, who plays Subotai in the first film. Gerry is actually a world-renowned champion surfer, and from an early age in his life, he read many of the Conan novels. With Gerry’s features and his great appreciation of Howard’s work, it was difficult for old friend John Milius to find anyone else as a better fit for the role of Subotai. Gerry Lopez also co-stars in Big Wednesday (another work of John Milius) and North Shore, which are both classic surfer movies, next to the Endless Summer films.
MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE CONAN DIALOG:
To bring you up to speed, early on in the movie Conan was enslaved and bought to be a Pit Fighter. After countless victories, his master takes him to the Far East for breeding (yes, I said breeding). As a reward for his success, Conan was given an education in eastern philosophies and was taught the art of swordsmanship from the eastern masters.
And so, in the next scene you see some sort of general talking to his men. He says to them, “We have won again. That is good! But what is best in life?”
One of his men replies, “The open steppe, fleet horse, falcon on your wrist, wind in your hair!”
“Wrong!” replies the general, and then asks, “Conan, what is best in life?”
Which Conan replies, “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!”
… that’s just wicked man.

I almost did not buy the 2 movie package because I saw the reviews stating that conan the destroyer is not in 16:9 ratio..
Well for the price i bought it anyway since I wanted both movies.
Both Conan’s came in letter box wide screen format..
Someone is confused..
Both movies look pretty good on a 47″ widescreen HDTV. Shading is a little off, but every outdoor movie is off do to sunlight..
My main point of this review is to tell people that do not waste your money on 2 seperate movies by the box set and you will be more then happy.
