br Though the subject matter of IMysterious Skin/I is as sensational as that of Gregg Araki’s other films (such as ITotally F***ked Up/I, IThe Doom Generation/I, or IThe Living End/I), his direction is richer and more multilayered than ever before. Two Kansas teenagers named Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I10 Things I Hate About You/I) and Brian (Brady Corbett, IThirteen/I) share a childhood trauma–but their responses are radically different: Neil hustles tricks, while Brady, who can’t remember what happened, believes he was abducted by aliens and left with “missing time.” As both try to make sense of their lives and Brian struggles to find out the truth, IMysterious Skin/I builds to an emotional pitch that some viewers will find uncomfortable and others will find liberating. The characters of Neil and Brian have a fullness that lifts IMysterious Skin/I above most examinations of sexual abuse and trauma. Gordon-Levitt has been deservedly praised by the critics, but the entire cast–which also includes Bill Sage (ISimple Men/I), Elizabeth Shu (ILeaving Las Vegas/I), Michelle Trachtenberg (IBuffy the Vampire Slayer/I), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (I24/I)–turns in superb performances. br ISpooky Toons/I culls 13 vintage cartoons, each centering on some poor bug-eyed creature contracting a usually misguided case of the creeps. To say it’s fraught with the sort of frightful scenes that remind one of bats and broomsticks, though, would be misleading. Mostly, these nuggets (most less than 10 minuts long) jog nostalgia. Casper, star of two segments, was never fond of scaring folks to begin with, and Betty Boop, the other double-billed character, is too cutesie-poo to pull off a portrayal of genuine fear. Still, ISpooky Toons/I ought to sit well with fans of the form and those more concerned with old-fashioned fun than Halloween-focused fare, as it trots out some early, largely forgotten gems. For instance, there’s IBalloon Land/I, about a town full of walking, talking balloons forever on the run from the roguish, rhyming Pin Cushion (”I always have a pin at hand / That’s the reason I am panned”), and IOuija Board,/I a partly animated featurette following the adventures of a cartoon clown who leaps off a storyboard and wreaks havoc in his studio’s art department. Another standout–IHuffless, Puffless/I–seems misplaced in this collection, but it’s still a joy to watch. It has a crew of hipster dragons haranguing a nonsmoking member of the tribe: “John, stop puttin’ it on. Ain’t no joke–you’ve gotta smoke!” In the end, of course, the puffless dragon overpowers his air-polluting peers, much the same way this compilation’s winning lineup overpowers its watered-down theme. br Based on a 50-page script by Jon Raymond, and shot in ten days, IOld Joy/I has a quiet energy that propels it further in its simplicity than many big budget movies. Director Kelly Reichardt, a former assistant on early Todd Haynes films, has enlisted Haynes as an executive producer and Yo La Tengo for soundtrack, lending IOld Joy/I a hipness that it exploits to reveal the relationship between the two main characters. Mark (Daniel London) leaves his pregnant wife, Tanya, at home for an excursion into the woods with his hippified buddy, Kurt (Will Oldham). Leaving Portland in Mark’s Volvo, with dog in tow, Kurt smoke bowls while Mark navigates into the Cascades backcountry, where the two get temporarily lost then camp until morning, for a hike to paradisiacal Bagby Hot Springs. Slight tension arises out of their divergent lifestyles. Mark’s a liberal yuppie, while Kurt’s easy drifting underpins his idealism. In key scenes, Kurt verbalizes his fears that the two old friends are losing intimacy. But Kurt’s sweetness, for example when he asks, “Is it cool if I sleep in the tent with you?” or massages Mark’s shoulders, overrides any real conflict. Cuts to birds chirping, slugs crawling, and campfires raging also relax the viewer as illustrations of the forest’s healing power. More a meditation than a packed adventure film, some may find IOld Joy/I slow and meandering, while others will enjoy this pace as precisely the film’s point. I–Trinie Dalton/I

br Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth’s films (IAnastasia/I and IThe Secret of NIMH/I), IThumbelina/I is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad “Let Me Be Your Wings” is as good as Disney’s best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol’ time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney’s IThe Little Mermaid/I. I–Doug Thomas/I

br IOut of Sight/I was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989’s Isex, lies, and videotape/I, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard’s novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard’s IGet Shorty/I. The movie’s a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who’s escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (a la IPulp Fiction/I) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard’s splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogu. While the sexy repartee between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney’s accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez’s father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion–and a cache of uncut diamonds–provides the setting for the film’s climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. The framing device is an effort by a horribly scarred combat soldier (Nicolas Cage) to break through to his best friend, Birdy (Matthew Modine), hospitalized after seemingly being driven mad by fighting in the Vietnam War. Cage then flashes back to their boyhood, where Birdy, a canary aficionado, was considered the school weirdo but managed to be a solid companion nonetheless. Directed by Alan Parker, it works best as a coming-of-age story, but misses the bizarre psychological transferences of the book, in which Birdy imagines himself within the world of canaries he creates in his bedroom at his parents’ house.
