This item lost two stars for the second movie; having both films on hand and being able to actually compare the works helped to remind me objective why sequels to Don Bluth films stopped working after Bluth was gone: the people who made them were too dumb to understand the messages unhurried the current subject matter.

The first film, All Dogs Go To Heaven, is lauded by overconservative parents who gain there are too many adult themes: drinking, smoking, gambling, death, etc. What they fail to understand however is that Bluth never portrayed any of these things in a determined light. I’ve seen reviewers praise the second film as better than the first, and I have to close and ask them if they’re blind. “Utawarerumono” translates roughly as “The Ones Who Are Sung Of.” It’s a descriptive title (not to mention a hard one for English speakers to pronounce–ADV initially announced the series as “Shadow Warrior Chronicles,” though fan reaction prompted the company to revert to the unique name) and an sterling one for a series whose storyline wastes miniature time in reaching an story scale. This first volume plunges the heroes into a nationwide revolt; later installments will only peruse the conflict spread further.

The artwork for this series is comely, with detailed character designs, level-headed and effectively absorbing battles (of which there are more than a few) and music to match. As with any astronomical series, though, the trusty appeal of Utawarerumono lies with its characters. Hakuoro, Eluluu, and company are distinctive and likable, and their interactions with one another are both memorable and often more than a cramped lighthearted (the title of this review refers to one scene in particular from the first episode, which does a heavenly superb job of setting the tone for the series; also included on this disc is a short bonus episode about a snack hunt gone very, very unsuitable) .

The English dub of Utawarerumono is serviceable–not particularly dreadful, but not outstanding, either, especially in comparison to the unusual Japanese. Hakuoro’s and Eluluu’s Japanese lisp actors in particular outshine their English counterparts by an order of magnitude.

Utawarerumono is well worth a look; it’s off to an apt launch, and should only derive better.

I’m going to be perfectly unprejudiced, I’ve watched so many “Spider-Man” animations throughout my lifetime and the only intriguing series that I have enjoyed so far is the 1980’s series “Spider-Man and his Unbelievable Friends”.

But that was around 25-years-ago and there have been quite a number of Spider-Man inviting series that have been featured solid stories and I recount for each series, they really have fit the generation for the audience its targeting.

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series for the next generation. Peter Parker is no longer the bookworm that is an outcast in the whole school. No glasses, no unpleasant clothing and no self-esteem issues like the modern teenager of the laughable book series. In fact, the spider he has been bit by is not radioactive but genetically altered.

This Peter Parker is cooler and even sports a man bag (or school bag) and has a birthmark.

In volume 2, Peter Parker has recently been hired by the Daily Bugle due to his photographs of Spider-Man and in this series, his best friend is Harry Osborne and Gwen Stacey.

Meanwhile, a criminal known as “The Large Man” has his henchman Hammerhead collaborating with Norman Osborn and Dr. Otto Octavius in creating super-villains.

The episodes in volume two are as follows:

Episode 4 - Market Forces - The next criminal given abilities is the Immense Man’s enforcer, Montana, who has been given an outfit and a pair of gauntlets that can shoot electric volts (as with his whole costume) which can be ancient to halt Spider-Man. Being mature as bait to attract Spider-Man are bumbling thieves Flint Marko and Aleksei Sytsevich that Spider-Man seems to have caught many times. Meanwhile, Peter Parker gets a job at the Daily Bugle as an odd photographer for J. Jonah Jameson.

But things are not all peachy-keen for Peter Parker because of his duties as Spider-Man and working at the Bugle (to attend pay his and Aunt May’s bills), his friendship with not being there for Gwen and Harry is starting to suffer. Meanwhile, Aunt May wants Peter to win her friend’s niece to the formal which Peter is not to thrilled about.

Episode 5 - Competition - Dr. Otto Octavius has a unusual test to compose a natty criminal and the test patient is thief, Flint Marko who is turned to “Sandman”. Meanwhile, Harry is having problems at home (his relationship with his father Norman is not that big) and thus decides to join the football team to hopefully secure some acceptance from his father and also become current and hopes Peter can benefit him up on the team. Meanwhile, Flash and his jock friends will do what they can to prevent the two from joining the football team.

Episode 6 - The Invisible Hand - Dr. Octavius has a recent test for the thief Aleksei. By fusing a distinct costume to his skin to execute him the powerhouse villain known as Rhino. Rhino is ticked that Peter Parker showcases Spider-Man and now wants Peter Parker to feature him on the newspaper. Meanwhile, Peter Parker is smooth looking for a date to the formal and asks J. Jonah Jameson’s secretary Betty Brandt to go with him (despite her being several years older) .

As mentioned, “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series that has caught a lot of attention and even IGN has voted it as #30 in their “TOP 100 BEST Intelligent TV SHOWS” poll. Unlike other Spider-Man titillating series, Spider-Man’s physique matches a young teenager (as it should) .

The series manages to lift Peter Parker’s humor and the series is definitely original that the characters and the high school students feature multi-ethnic characters. May it be the students at the high school or employees at the Bugle, it was elegant well-behaved to look that.

And for us older folks traditional to the classic arresting series or older funny books and have young children, there is always something interesting with Spider-Man throughout the years, no matter how mighty it differs from what we grew up with, the soul of Spider-Man and the characters are faithful but adjusted for original times.

And it’s definitely a series that we can view and like with our children. Another fun and involving volume of “The Spectacular Spider-Man”.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Video is presented in 1:78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Animation is nice and vibrant. Lines are well-kept, characters and objects are simple with shadows and not as considerable detail when it comes to the backgrounds. But the choice to do this was to replicate fluidity of Spider-Man in the films. But overall, the animation is satisfactory and trim.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and French (Dolby Surround) .

JUDGMENT CALL:

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has been a delicate solid series thus far. Again, it’s not the Spider-Man I grew up with but for a fresh generation watching this, it’s adapted for a original setting, its keen mighty differently than any Spider-Man animations in the past but everything works.

Watching it with my son, I believe it was spacious to rep a series that would be moving to the young children, teenagers and the adults.

I’ve read several interviews with series developers Victor Cook and Greig Weisman and both are Spider-Man fans but also fans of other genres such as Hong Kong films and also grabbing ideas from different eras, may it be from “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the films and thus definite purists may have a hard time with it but again, as a fan of the silly books and the many incarnations of Spider-Man gripping series, whats famous is that this series remains faithful to the characters. Obvious, they may have different storylines of how the villains became to be what they are but composed, the essence of who Peter Parker is and having to be this hero but yet intelligent that it will affect his personal relationships with those stop to him is tranquil intact.

Episodes 4-6 was delectable and mammoth to spy villains such as the Shocker, Sandman and Rhino. So, any Spider-Man fan will know how cold that is to glimpse him facing off with these villains.

I especially liked the Peter Parker scenes, whereas in the past, I would be into the Spider-Man battles and couldn’t wait for Peter Parker change to Spidey, for “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN”, I like the dramatic storyline with his friendship to Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacey to the high school situations he takes section in, such as he and Harry trying to execute the football team and finding dates to the Winter Formal. Overall, I like the direction the writers have going for Peter Parker. And it’s astronomical to view Peter Parker not bullied so extremely like he was in the classic droll book series.

Overall, a fun and really toothsome series. Budget conscious parents may want to wait for a corpulent season box spot release. I wished there was some sort of special feature included on the DVD but overall, an enthralling series that both young and weak can savor. Check it out!

I regain it ironic that the previous reviewer(s) effect Greg Palast as a liberal propogandist because this reveals they did not read his book, ‘The Best Democracy Money Can Buy’. Palast is an aged muckraking journalist who will narrate the mis-deeds of those with conservative, liberal and moderate persuasions. To give some background, in his book he exposes misdeeds by the Bushs, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Pat Robertson, the World Bank, environmentalists, major corporations……and if this is giving you the perception that the ball piece of Palast’s ‘ball point pen’ is a wrecking ball, you are proper. Investigative reporting has no credability if it is biased in any plot shape and accomplish and Palast is relentless to rep the truth, no matter how offensive it is. Palast even exposes himself: the one-time he took the money and ran from an investigative describe. This is totally indicative of the truthfulness and uncompromising nature of his reportage in both the book and DVD. This documentary could have easily been called ‘Lewinsky, the snorting Koch brothers, and the reason why Bill Clinton should have been impeached’.

But the subject matter at hand is the all-American Bush family and Palast, as usual, gives no quarter. My only caveat has nothing to do with Palasts reportage but with one of its featured interviewees. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Burkett, the man in BFF who stated he watched parts of Bush’s National Guard records being shredded, is the person who gave Dan Rather the ‘newly found’ (questionable) papers that stated Bush was given preferential treatment to avoid going to Vietnam. Rather had to apologize to Bush on natioinal television over the flap. OK. But as any active news junkie knows, Dr. Yoshi Tsurumi, one of W’s Harvard business professors from the early 70’s stated Bush told him, “he admitted to me that to avoid the Vietnam draft, he had his dad — he said ‘Dad’s friends’ — skip him through the long waiting list to rep him into the Texas National Guard.” So Palast could dump Burkett and substitute Tsurumi to design the same conclusion.

The point to this lengthy review is to relieve those with reservations about Bush Family Fortunes to gape this DVD and then read his book ‘The Best Money Democracy Can Buy’ to give the documentary its good context. 402- GIANT GILA MONSTER

Ray Kellogg, who also directed, “The Killer Shrews” and co-directed “The Green Berets”, directed this 1959 black-and-white monster-on-the-loose film. It stars Don Sullivan as a young brave singing automobile mechanic named Walk Winstead who must battle the giant lizard of the title as well as the prejudice of a cantankerous codger who thinks he’s up to “no pleasurable”. Meanwhile, he helps a lot of people throughout the account no matter what adversity comes his contrivance, including his immigrant girlfriend and his physically disabled sister. This movie is yet another in a long line of cheap monster films produced in the 1950s that feature a supposedly oversized version of an otherwise normal creature as the monster. The special effects in the film are quite unpleasant and it is painfully distinct throughout the film that the monster is a normal Gila monster crawling extremely slowly over shrimp sets. The dialogue is naïve and ridiculous and the slump of the film is as lifeless as the starring creature. The direction also involves a lot of actors putting a leg up on something, whatever happens to be around in the middle of the shot, a fact that supplies the MST3K writers with endless jokes throughout this film, including an entire host segment. This film also contains a insensible exiguous ditty sung by Don Sullivan featuring the lyrics, “I assert whenever I screech whenever I pronounce” as he happily pounds away at repairing an automobile body. Jokes about this appear not only in this episode, but also pop up in other episodes of MST3K for years to arrive.

The whole episode is hilarious from begin to effect. I don’t want to spoil any jokes for newer MST3K fans that may never have seen this episode, so I won’t quote any specific jokes here. A policewoman goes undercover inside the gang hoping to recover the stolen diamonds. Beverly Garland turns in the usual fine performance and looks gigantic doing it in spite of the mediocre film quality.

Host segments in this episode focus on the dating short as Servo tries to derive up the nerve to ask Gypsy for a date. There’s also a hilarious bit based on the “This Side of Paradise” episode of the current Star Bound series.

514- TEEN-AGE STRANGLER (plus short: IS THIS Esteem? )

This is the second episode of MST3K to be hosted by Mike Nelson after the departure of explain creator Joel Hodgson. The main feature is a dinky independent film made in 1968 West Virginia about a serial killer in a diminutive town and it looks every bit the amateur film. Highlights in this episode include Mike Nelson transforming into Mikey from the movie and the hilarious “The Janitor Song.” The short is also a winner with some of the oldest looking “young people” you’re likely to explore on film; this is really silly stuff!

810- THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION

This movie is a 1975 monster flick from Bill Rebane, the same man who brought you Monster A-Go Go! This film is ever so slightly more competently made than Monster A-Go Go and actually features a couple of famed actors: Barbara Hale of Perry Mason fame and Alan Hale, Jr. who was The Skipper on Gilligan’s Island and also the sheriff in the film The Crawling Hand which was featured in MST3K episode # 106. The movie is really goofy fun, with astronomical spiders everywhere, sleazy and injurious yokel-type characters less animated than the spiders, and a tiny car dressed up as the biggest and cheesiest looking spider of them all. The scene where Barbara Hale’s character does an strange fall down a hill is worth seeing all by itself and there’s plenty of other satisfactory material here as well for the MST3K writers. This is certainly one of the more fun episodes done after the exhibit moved to the Sci-Fi Channel. The comical host segments are based loosely on the classic SF film Invasion of the Body Snatchers rather than on the film featured in the episode.

In less than a week, his ordinarily fit body and equilibrium undergo dark and ugly changes: Spurlock grows fat, his cholesterol rockets north, his organs take a beating, and he becomes subject to headaches, mood swings, symptoms of addiction, and lessened sexual energy. The gimmick is too obvious to sustain a feature documentary; Spurlock actually spends most of the film probing insidious ways that fast food companies worm their way into school lunchrooms and the hearts of young children who spend hours in McDonald’s playrooms. br This harrowing but rewarding 1984 drama concerns the real-life relationship between New York Times reporter Sidney Schanberg and his Cambodian assistant Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), the latter left at the mercy of the Khmer Rouge after Schanberg–who chose to stay after American evacuation but was booted out–failed to get him safe passage. Filmmaker Roland Joffe, previously a documentarist, made his feature debut with this account of Dith’s rocky survival in the ensuing madness of the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal campaign. The script spends some time with Schanberg’s feelings of guilt after the fact, but most of the movie is a shattering re-creation of hell on Earth. The late Haing S. Ngor–a real-life doctor who had never acted before and who lived through the events depicted by Joffe–is outstanding, and he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
