If you’re buying this film because you’re a fan of Rudy Ray Moore, or you’re expecting to watch another Dolemite film, skip it! This film can only be appreciated by kung fu film fans.
Shaolin Dolemite is comprised of footage that wasn’t in the film released on DVD as ‘Ninja The Final Duel’. Apparently the full length of ‘Ninja The Final Duel’ is supposed to run for over 10 hours!!! But only the edited version was released. ‘Shaolin Dolemite’ at least gets you an hour and a half closer (minus the Rudy Ray Moore footage) to having the full version.
So, like I said, DON’T BUY IT FOR RUDY RAY MOORE!!! Buy it if you are a fan of Robert Tai’s films and you want to get more footage from ‘Ninja The Final Duel’ that isn’t on the Crash Cinema DVD version of the film.
I’m a big fan of Rudy’s other movies, but this one isn’t even in the same league. Basically they bought a lousy kung fu video and spliced in goofy sound effects and a few scenes of Rudy making faces and commenting on the action. Rudy’s barely in the thing, and the tedious fight scenes go on forever. Trust me, Rudy’s made much better movies. If you’re not familiar with Mr. Moore’s work, check out Dolemite, Human Tornado or Petey Wheatstraw instead, you’ll be glad you did.

This movie is based on the Middle Eastern classic Arabian Nights . The Arabian tapestry is felt in genuine form in Lotte’s interpretation. In fact Lotte is very talented when it comes to conjuring up a particular time and place in her other works as well. Lotte is a master of creating a dreamy, hypnotic, universe, out of jointed silhouettes. The moving objects morph perfectly into complex shapes, a magnificent bird into a spellbound woman, a magical palace out of fallen stars. The movie is entrancing, beautiful, and ethereal, not just for the time it was made, but even when you watch it now. There is a mood of fairy tales, other worldly, creativity and a genuine success at telling a story, with paper for crying out loud! After watching this animation, the visions will linger behind your sight like a soft daydream glow of a memory. If you are a current day animator the results of Lotte’s work considering her limited technology, will blow your mind. If you are not an animator, this movie, will blow your mind. Lotte is an integral part of cinematic history. For once there is no ambiguity: “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” is definitely the first feature length animated cartoon. Working in a converted garage, Reininger and her two assistants (one of whom specialized in magical soap bubble effects!) took three years to complete “Achmed.” The film was a success, but for whatever reason Reininger spent the rest of her long career making shorts and advertisements (that I’ve never seen-hint, hint, Milestone). You might think, Hoo boy, an hour of nothing but black silhouettes on white. But give the film half a chance (especially in this magnificently colored restoration, with wonderful musical accompaniment) and I guarantee you’ll be hooked. The complex tale of Achmed, his beloved, the wicked Magician, the kindly and powerful Ogre, the magical flying horse, and all the other characters are animated in a fantastically expressive manner, and the film moves at a breathless but comprehensible pace. This is one you’ll come back to.

I purchased this DVD because I liked an earlier DVD by David Dorian Ross. This is an excellent introduction to the first part (8 moves) of the Yang style short form for those who have never tried T’ai Chi before. It does not teach the whole short form. However, if you master this DVD, you will be well prepared to take the next step–learning the entire form. David Dorian Ross is easy to understand and to follow. You shouldn’t have any trouble learning these particular moves.
The morning routine is beautiful and easy to follow. The tone of the dvd is peaceful and graceful. The Solo Forms section is great for a beginner, but I agree with others who say it is difficult to reverse the movements, right to left. I want to be able to copy what I see, and reversing right to left is too confusing, so I literally turn the laptop around, and look at the reflection of it in a mirror, so that I can copy his actions exactly, and that works fine.

Movie Title: Lady and the Tramp

Simply speaking, Lady and the Tramp is my favorite Disney film of all time! In my opinion, it is a 5 star masterpiece, and I would give it more if I could! I remember when I was just 4 years old, watching the characters Lady, Tramp, Jock, Trusty, and the Siamese Cats light up my eyes, as well as my TV screen, as no other movie (except maybe Pete’s Dragon or Superman) has done for me before or since. The music and songs are especially enjoyable, especially “Bella Notte.” And the thrilling climax (which I won’t spoil for the peope who have yet to see it) ranks with the “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” climaxes! I remember having to wait almost a decade for Disney to re-release this classic on video so that I could replace my worn-out taped version. Now that I have it on both VHS and DVD, and both editions are in widescreen, I can enjoy it for years to come as I never thought I’d be able to! Your kids will love it, and so will anyone who’s still young at heart! Buy it on DVD today! Don’t make the same mistake I did over 10 years ago! (And don’t let the lack of special features stop you, either!)
This movie is about a purebred Cocker Spaniel, who is later named Lady, that is given to the wife of, as Lady refers to him, Jim-dear. She has 2 neighbor dog friends, Jock and Trusty whom she confides in often. As she gets older, Lady’s owner is expecting a baby, in which Lady feels like she is no longer a part of the family. She meets a mutt from the streets, Tramp, who comes by after being chased by the city dog catcher. They meet again after Lady escapes the arms of Aunt Sarah in a pet store because she is buying a muzzle to avoid Lady harming her cats. Tramp comes to her rescue to get the muzzle off and they go for a romantic dinner at Tony’s (spaghetti no less!). They spend some time on the streets, get to know eachother, and come to find they like eachother. Lady realizes that she needs to return home, she does so, and is caught by the city dog catcher, tossed into the pound where she meets Tramp’s “friends”, and is told everything about his street life. When Aunt Sarah retrieves her from the pound, she is then chained up outside to a leaky dog house. Tramp comes by to see her some time after, and she tells him she doesn’t ever want to see him again. Shortly after, Lady notices a rat come into the yard. It goes upstairs into the baby’s room, and Lady tries to stop it, but is still chained up. Tramp hears her barking and comes to see what’s going on. She tells him there is a rat in the baby’s room, he goes into the house, up to the baby’s room, and fights to keep the rat from the baby. He makes a lot of noise in doing so along with knocking over the baby’s crib. Lady gets loose, runs upstairs after Tramp, but Aunt Sarah soon shows up, calling the dog pound to retrieve Tramp, and throw Lady into a room where she cannot get to the baby. As soon as Jim-dear and his wife return from their trip that very same evening, they notice a dog pound carriage outside their house. They run home, ask what happened, let Lady out of the room she was trapped in, and they all go after the dog pound carriage to save Tramp (Trusty getting hurt in the process by following the carriage and knocking it over to save Tramp). Tramp is saved, given a dog license, and a home with Lady and her family. Then they all live happily ever after!

This Disney classic is one you HAVE to own! I’ve loved this movie since I was 2, and I still love it today at the age of 19! There is no better cartoon about dogs than this!! This is a must have!

There are SO many episodes in which Walt plays a major part, this DOUBLE DIPPING is regrettable! ***
I bought the Disneyland USA treasures set specifically for the Disneyland 10th anniversary show, and in particular for the tiki room segment. I was appalled and very angry to find that they had done their creative editing again. About 8 minutes were cut out of the tiki room segment, and then to add insult to injury they put a large hard to avoid flashing warning on the bottom of the screen during the tahitian terrace fire dance segment. All this from a set that was pretty heavily advertised as being “uncut” and “original”. The other shows on the set had some light editing done as well, whenever the mousketeers normally showed up breifly in the background these peices were cut out, and of course the infamous scene in the opening day broadcast where Walt thinks he’s off camera and swears a bit. I dont know about anyone else, but I am really tired of revisionist history. I would rather take these things as whole and unedited blemishes and all, then have someone take out parts for one reason or another.
I am really really hoping that the reason that the 10th anniversary show is on this set yet again, is that they are putting out a unedited original version. If not, then once again as with many disney things lately I will have to find a way to put my old unedited television tapings from disney channel onto dvd. I refuse to buy into someone else’s version of history, and will not buy edited dvd’s. For it to be a “treasure” it has to be an original version to me, otherwise its pretty near useless garbage in a pretty decorated tin.

Movie Title: Son of Lassie

I think this movie has more plot and action in it, making it one of my favorite Lassie movies. It shows how good people will risk their lives not only for human beings, but also for animals, which is true in real life. I’d risk my life to save my pets. It also had a more adult theme for adults and children to ponder. It was more realistic, in that some parts of the movie were very sad and tearful. It does end happy.
Bought this for the children as they had seen all the pre-quels and wanted to see what happened to the next generation. It did not disappoint and was, in a way, a happy conclusion to the other Lassie movie starring Elizabeth Taylor. Has all the excitement of seeing someone grown up, doing something worthwhile as an adult, things not always going to plan, but somehow ending up happily. A feel-good movie that kids will love and remember.

For sheer catharsis, In America beats every movie I’ve seen since “The Sweet Hereafter” years ago. Like that movie, it deals with the aftermath of the death of a child; unlike that movie, it comes down (after much agony) on the side of a loving family as the only thing that can heal us.
The Sullivans, a young couple with two adorable daughters, slip illegally into the U.S., moving to New York. In theory this is to help Da start his acting career; in reality, it is an attempt to escape from the sad memories of young son Frankie, recently died at 5 of a brain tumor.
The performances are all, all stunning. Samantha Morton, her hair shorn like a penitent nun’s, gives a stunning performance driven by the despair in her eyes. The real-world sisters Sara and Emma Bolger seem completely transparent; they leave the impression they are not acting at all, but really living the loss of their beloved brother. The African actor Djimon Hounsou looms like a sad but powerful diety over the sorrowful family, alternatively reflecting their pain and offering them solace.
The ending will surprise you - I won’t give it away here - but it is a sweet resolution. The film seems to have a basis in truth, as it is written by director Jim Sheridan and his two daughters, and dedicated at the end to the memory of Frankie Sheridan (who, as it happens, was Jim Sheridan’s brother rather than his son).
Jim Sheridan’s IN AMERICA, though you may not realize it when you watch it, is a fable about wishes, dreams, good defeating bad, families growing stronger, love outlasting all adversity and America as the land of opportunity. It’s a delightful film, touching without being too cute.
One thing you must realize throughout the film, when it takes turns toward optimism when other films would grow darker, is that the story is told through the eyes of Christie, the 10-year-old daughter of an Irish immigrant family recently relocated to New York. She narrates the story. She speeds it up and slows it down as she needs to. She talks of her sister Ariel’s fears, of her mother’s strength and of her father’s lost smile. And, most importantly, she puts a positive spin on each of her proud family’s struggles.
Another director might have taken this same story and gone in a different, darker direction with it. The elements are there, certainly. The family is poor, living in a tenement alongside beggars and drug addicts. Johnny, the girls’ father, is an out-of-work actor who’s uprooted his family to escape sad memories of his son Frankie, who died. Mateo, the next-door neighbor, and Sarah, the mother, are both faced with life-threatening conditions.
But the atmosphere that Sheridan provides us in this film is comforting and light. The city is enchanting. The tenement is both scary and magical, depending upon the story that Christie is telling the audience. No adult problem goes unsolved for long, even ones that seem particularly bleak. Throughout these positive twists, the importance of the narrator is key. Happy endings are important to a little girl, particularly one who feels so responsible for her own family. At one point in the story, for instance, she saves the family from their latest crisis and relates to her father that she’s been the family’s savior for a year.
Though it focuses on her entire family, it’s Christie’s story. And, while she’s telling it, it’s really moving and uplifting.
The acting here is uniformly terrific. Paddy Considine, playing Johnny the father, is a revelation. He’s attractive, strong, a little crazy and yet weighed down by grief. Samantha Morton delivers another compelling performance, yet she comes off here as sweeter and more sympathetic than she did in the disappointing MORVERN CALLAR. Djimon Honsou, best known for his work in AMISTAD, is absolutely spectacular as Mateo, the girls’ doomed neighbor. And Sarah and Emma Bolger, real-life sisters playing the girls in the film, manage the difficult task of playing adorable, likable, distinct children without coming off as entirely too precious and cute.
The script is terrific, and the direction is quite good.
IN AMERICA is just lovely.

Alas we have Combat - The Complete Series in an all encompassing 40 disc set. As a baby boomer whose dad proudly served his country contributing to both the European and Pacific theatres, I treasure this series as it told the stories of our brave men and women truly fighting for world peace. Like most returning GI’s, my father, who was in the U.S. Army MAC, really never spoke about the things he saw during his time overseas. He is gone now as is many of his fellow “Greatest Generation” comrades. Although Combat! does not show the graphic carnage that comes with battle, it does show the daily emotional toll that war brought to the boots on the ground, as best as 1960’s television could provide. It reminds us that the only good thing about war is its ending.

This series is truly a tribute all VFW’s then and especially now.
All that I can say about this release is that it is spectacular. Lots of very good “Extra Content” accompany all of the episodes throughout it’s five year run. My only complaint would be the packaging. The disks tend to not stay in place all of the time. This is the only reason that I gave it 4 out of 5. My true rating would be 4.75. I would also highly recommend the book “Combat! A Viewer’s Companion to the WWII TV Series”. Get it while you can. I believe it will not always be in print and the information that it contains is very enlightening.

I vividly remember the release of Sleeping Beauty. I was old enough to go see it myself - just barely. There I was sitting way up front eating my popcorn and all of a sudden this spectacular dragon materialized right before my eyes. Popcorn forgotten, I was hooked. Cartoons never looked the same to me, and I spent the rest of my life inhaling fantasy and science fiction on a quest for the same thrill.
Animation has changed quite a bit in the ensuing years, but even today Sleeping Beauty is a towering achievement. Now I’m more sensitive to the tricks of the art and can see the masterful use of perspective that made the scenes leap out at you. When I first picked up this DVD I half expected to be disappointed, to find it really wasn’t so glorious in retrospect. This is hardly the case - this film is just as vibrant and alive as it was in 1959.
The added dimension now is that I can see how Disney’s work was a formative influence on animation even today. Artist/Directors like Miyazaki owe much to this film and its predecessor Snow White. And they freely admit it. As a production, Sleeping Beauty created a sense of legitimacy for animation that proved that high quality animation was something well beyond the Saturday morning funnies.
Disney took a great risk when creating this film, pouring a tremendous amount of resources in making it something as perfect as was possible for his time. While the studio reaped the financial benefits, the audience was the real winner, as a whole genre exploded before our eyes. Even now, with anime rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with, this film stands out for story, art, and music.
The additional features, especially those that retell the making of the film, are excellent as well. All captures in fine detail on this DVD. This is a must see for anyone who still loves a fairy tale.
This movie is one of the great classics of animation, especially for Disney. The DVD version is significantly improved compared to the previous VHS tape. The picture and sound were both greatly enhanced for this release. Furthermore, both widescreen and full screen versions are available in this package.
As with Disney’s other classics, some liberties were taken with the original story of Sleeping Beauty. Disney took the classic story and made it unique and special. In some ways the story is less violent and dark than the original fairy tale. In other ways, such as the portrayal of Maleficent, the movie is dark and forbidding. While the movie is generally a children’s movie, Maleficent’s dragon and her general demeanor can be somewhat frightening for some in the pre-school and younger set.
Aurora was the first love for many a young boy, and was also the model for the aspirations of millions of girls. The romantic love story of Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip enchanted would-be princesses everywhere, and in some cases became the measure by which future spouses were measured (and many of us struggled to meet the ideal).
Of course, the romantic story and the evil of Maleficent were balanced by the comedy of the animal characters and the three bumbling, good-hearted fairy godmothers. While their goodness may appear a bit too vanilla and sweet for some, it is perfect for those longing for the innocence of their youth.
While the movie is the most important part of the DVD, this two CD set contains a phenomenal number of extras. I found the audio commentary by various key individuals to be absolutely fascinating. I planned to listen to portions of the commentary in preparation for my review, and instead found myself listening to the entire thing because it was so incredibly fascinating. Mary Costa (Princess Aurora) and others provide their perspective on the creation of the movie, as well as personal memories of Walt Disney and his influence on the film. The audio commentary by itself is worth replacing your VHS tape, particularly for aficionados of Disney movies.
In addition to the audio commentary are numerous, emphasize numerous, other bonus features. Some I felt were less than worthwhile, others, such as the shorts “Grand Canyon” and “The Peter Tchaikovsky Story,” were excellent bonuses. The number of bonuses on this two disc set was so large that there is a navigational overview included in the DVD that categorizes 38 features found on the second disc.
With the movie and the wealth of bonuses, this movie is a must-buy for those who have yet to have “Sleeping Beauty.” For those who have the VHS, the bonus material is nearly worth the cost of the DVD. Certainly those who are collectors of Disney memorabilia and historians of Disney will find the DVD to be a concise compendium of some of the best information available regarding this film. I highly recommend this DVD!

As one who has been trying to introduce the perception of spirituality being interwoven with every facet of life, I would say that this DVD is far more effective in conveying that message to audiences unfamiliar with the concept than I realized. Though, I feel the subject could have been presented more effectively in my perspective, it would seem that once again, this beloved speaker finds resonance with his audience; leaving them in the lap of revelation.
I’d say that Nooma is like a piece of candy and this is like a steak dinner, yet somehow the Nooma videos tend to pack a little more punch and cater to more discussion. This is sort of done when it’s done. The discussion will happen, but unlike the Nooma DVDs, this DVD doesn’t come along with a discussion guide.

Brilliant stuff. Excellent revelation as one would expect. Yet I write as one who has been anticipating this for nearly a year and a half, so it might be that my expectations were overly titillated.
Rob Bell has received a great deal of criticism in his career for a variety of reasons. Some might have some merit, but most come out a desire for him to be something he is not. He is not a world class Biblical Scholar; he is not the greatest theological mind; he is not a person that will champion conservative ideologies, nor liberal. If you desire any of these things from this man, do not buy his work for you will be disappointed.
But if you are looking for a thoughtful person engaging with faith, culture, and life, then you might have found someone that will really speak to you in a refreshing confession of Christian faith.
Rob Bell is a pastor with a heart for humanity. He is a person that desires to unite, rather than divide. He is a person who recognizes the burden of our society and addresses them in faithful ways and “Everything Is Spiritual” is a wonderful testimony of God at work within Humanity.
I was blessed to watch this. And I trust that those who have ears to hear will come away from this experience moved in profound ways.
