I found this DVD very disappointing. It attempted to present an interesting position about Jane Austen’s life but it fell short in the area of facts about her life. Nothing can be worse, in my opinion, than when a documentary distorts the facts about a famous person’s life but it is even worse when they get some of them completely wrong like this one did. Their attempt to make a more worldly perspective on Jane Austen was interesting but I found this annoying because it was the focus of the whole documentary after a while. At this time in history it seems that everyone is trying to make things more global! I am glad that women in Iran are reading Jane Austen and that India is turned on by it, that is great, but I wanted to know more about Jane Austen herself not have to endure some feminist plateau so that somehow we could take a simple Regency woman’s writing to push our own subjective views or cause. I also resented that the only man on the DVD that liked and talked about Jane Austen was portrayed as a person who was effeminant. Why can’t a man like Jane Austen’s books? Just because Jane Austen’s female characters were strong does not mean they were feminists. The kind of feminism that we experience now in the USA, something I am glad exists, did NOT exist in Jane Austen’s time. If you read her letters you would see she is a proper, subservient female of her own era. Certainly I have nothing against her characterisms of strong women, though. I would have liked to see in this DVD more attention to the accurate details of Austen’s life and work is all.

I was terribly disappointed in this DVD. It seemed more like an advertisement for other movies than a biography on Jane Austen. My $20 would have been better spent elsewhere. I think I would have discovered more about Jane Austen in a book than on this DVD. It seemed there wasn’t enough information to fill the time, so they highlighted several other movies made that were based on the Pride and Prejudice theme. I yawned through most of it. The little information they did reveal about Jane Austen wasn’t even very interesting. I know there is much more they could have told as I’ve been to the Jane Austen house in Bath. I learned more there in a 15 minute talk than I did on this DVD.

It’s easy to see why “Vixen!” is one of the late Russ Meyer’s more popular movies, with two of those reasons (sorry, this kind of humor is mandatory here) being Erika Gavin. Gavin, as the libidinous title character, seems to be having a great time frolicking through this movie, mounting Canadian mounties, sexually teasing her biker brother or seducing the young couple who stay at the mountain lodge she and her pilot husband operate. Vixen’s racism is a bit disconcerting–she frequently hurls racial slurs at her brother’s African-American draft-dodging pal Niles–though it seems used largely to set up a plot twist involving communism and hijacking (it’ll make sense, sort of, when you see it). Meyer never did hardcore, but the sex in this one isn’t as explicit as in some of his later ’70s films (”Up” and “Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens” for example). Still, it seems a lot more erotic, with all the men and women embodying sexual archetypes of the day (not to mention Meyer’s own erotomanias). It’s one of the few Russ Meyer movies where both the women AND the men have good chests. Also toned down are the manic jump cuts and breathless exposition, making “Vixen!” a lot less exhausting viewing experience than other Meyer movies, like “Cherry, Harry & Raquel” or “Up.”

I’m still partial to Meyer’s black and white drive-in films, like “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” and “Mudhoney,” but I include “Vixen!” as one of my favorite Russ Meyer movies, second only to “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.”

Any college male who saw this flick in the 60’s will never forget it. For most of us, it was our first introduction to the wacky world of Russ Meyer, with his buxom babes and square-jawed men. The movie begins with a pilot landing his plane in the great north as a voice says, “This is bush country.” From then on, you’re hooked. Thank you, Russ.

I love this show and catch it on BBCA whenever I can (I’m watching season 3 on my DVR at this very moment). Here you can see the real Gordon Ramsay at work with real people. Yes, he’s demanding in the kitchen but it’s not the over dramatized Fox version we see in the US.

The F Word (which is Food, not that other four letter f word he likes) is a variety show set in The F Word restaurant. Every week he invites a brigade of amateur cooks to serve 50 people each weekend, then rates them based on how many customers pay at the end of the day.

Throughout the cooking service there are segments that include: a run through of the recipes being cooked, a check-in with a British celebrity guest, making fun of celebrity chefs, alternative food sources (e.g. haggis, squirrel, horse milk), teaching busy people to cook, celebrity cooking challenge and other food related topics.

I especially like the honesty from a culinary point of view, particularly the segments about where our food comes from, something we Americans aren’t always so keen to know about. In Season 1, Gordon takes the viewer through the experience of raising his own turkeys and then processing them for a meal in his kitchen. You get to meet his wife and four kids in the process too. Season 2 follows pigs and Season 3 follows sheep.

Being a program from the UK, they do show a lot more than most American shows (e.g. during the butchering process), but if you’re willing to learn a bit more about your food and would like to see more of the real Gordon Ramsay, give this series a chance. If you’re not sure, find someone who has BBCA and you can catch the occasional re-run or new Season 3 episodes (Winter 2009).

BTW, I ate at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road (his three Michelin Star flagship in London) in October. It was most excellent, though the weak dollar was a bit of a bummer.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Gordon has a real passion for food. This series, in my opinion, gives viewers a better opportunity to see how strongly Gordon takes his commitment to good food. Quality is integral to fresh, well-produced fruit, vegetables and meat and I think it’s a very positive thing to know exactly what we as consumers and home cooks should be looking for as we make a stronger effort to eat better, support local economies and commit to a better standard of living.

In this particular series, Gordon (together with his children) raise turkeys and garden veggies. At the same time, he starts his controversial Get Women Back Into the Kitchen campaign with several celebrity guests (including Joan Collins, infamous in Ramsay’s backstory as she was kicked out of one of his restaurants together with a warring food critic). He’s got an excellent recurring segment in which he shows you how to prepare the very meals being served in the show’s restaurant.

The only thing that I disliked about the DVD itself was the editing of Gordon’s other favorite ‘f’ word. Anyone familiar with Ramsay, his shows or his personality would know before purchasing any of his DVDs that this word is an integral part of his lexicon. The edits are annoying and unnecessary, in my opinion.

Film director John McTiernan’s “The 13th Warrior” is such a frustrating film. There’s much to love about this robust viking epic, including a handful of terrific actors with an appealing presence, excellent period detail, memorable battle sequences and a fantastic musical score by the always-dependable Jerry Goldsmith. But why did the studio editors have to cut this film to pieces?!

When watching this action movie, any viewer with half a brain can tell that multiple scenes must have been left on the cutting room floor. Supporting characters disappear without a trace, continuity is fragmented and illogical, the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. At one point the vikings are traveling by ship, the next they are riding cross country on horseback.

So it’s a pleasant surprise that even after such annoying studio interference, “The 13th Warrior” still succeeds on several levels. Based on Michael Crichton’s novel “Eaters of the Dead,” a whimsical interpretation of the Olde English tale “Beowulf,” this film (like the book) changes the dragon into a cannibalistic horde of viscious warriors terrorizing a remote village. A ragtag group of vikings, in the best tradition of “The Magnificient Seven,” soon come to the rescue with unwitting Arabic ambassador Ahmed (Antonio Banderas) in tow.

Several great scenes will stay with the viewer, among them Ahmed’s touching dalliance with a willowy viking maiden (who disappears by the film’s end), Ahmed’s humorous camaraderie with his new viking friends, Bulvine’s (Beowulf’s) fatal stand prior to the final battle, and Omar Sharif’s brief cameo at the film’s beginning.

Bulvine’s viking burial, which should have been one of the ultimate highlights of this film, is shown as if an afterthought during a far too brief montage. The relationship between Bulvine, aging warrior king Hrothgar and Hrothgar’s wife (played by the talented Diane Venora), also appears to have been a victim of impatient editors. With the recent success of the “Lord of the Rings” films, it’s obvious viewers have no complaints about sitting through a finely detailed epic fantasy, so it comes as a rather sad note that what could have been an equally superb fantasy film has been so severely butchered.

I would love to see a Director’s Cut of “The 13th Warrior,” with the missing scenes added. John McTiernan has proven his action muscle in the past with the underrated “Predator,” and the creative “Die Hard.” “The 13th Warrior” is a good film, and I enjoy watching it repeatedly. But with each viewing, I realize with frustration this should have been a great film. As a fantasy fan, I have been sold short by an unimaginative Hollywood system.

This is the film version of Michael Crichton’s book EATERS OF THE DEAD. Told through the eyes of a young Arab ambassador Ahmahd ibn Fahdalan (Antonio Banderas) this is basically a retelling of one of literature’s classic epics, Beowulf. Fahadalan is banished from his homeland for loving the wrong woman. On his journeys he meets up with some Norsemen and joins their encampment (look for Omar Sheriff in a small part as Translater.)

When they hear of trouble on one of their lands, the norsemen consult their oracle who tells them that 13 warriors must confront the evil (and of course the 13th chosen man must not come from the north). Thus Fahdalan is coerced into joining their ranks. What follows is a thrilling action/adventure Beowulf style as the group tries to battle against insurmountable odds to defeat the cannabilistic “Eaters of the Dead”.

Besides from being well written adventure, it is a wonderful glimpse into norse culture and mythology. John McTiernan shows us a time filled with brave but very human characters where fealty to your lord and land meant everything — where fighting for the greater good was more important than any one man’s life. This is a story of courage and survival that is at times mesmeririzing to watch.

It’s main weakness is that it was unanble to fit in all the nuances and relationshop complexities that the book described so well. Many key definative moments and characterizations (most notably the cultures of the norsemen and their relationship with their new arab “little brother”) are lost or edited out. This I believe was not so much the fault of the director but of the studio who rushed to get the film released. My other complaint is with the DVD version of the film, which SHOULD have included an audio commentary of some kind, and preferably some of the deleted scenes which would have developed the film more thoroughly. This it is worth seeing for fans of epic adventure and mythology. Here’s hoping for a Director’s cut of The 13th Warrior to be released soon…..

This was a gift for my two year old. When I first played it I was not sure my son would like it…the characters were talking musical instruments. Beep the Bus and Jasper the Clown looked like they would scare my child! WRONG! He LOVES this DVD….the characters, the songs, EVERYTHING! It is a bright, funny, wonderfully computer amimated DVD that is fun to watch over and over again. My son has actually picked up new words just from watching and he loves ALL the songs!

We stumbled on this video when my 29 month old picked it up at the video store because he was drawn to the “Humpty Dumpty” on the back. (He loves the nursery rhyme and repeats it over and over). He really enjoys the video and got so upset when we had to return it. Yes, the narration is in a slight British accent but not so much that it distracts. Besides, I want my child to understand there is more in the world than his own home town. The nursery rhymes are not verbatim to what you may have heard growing up, but again I think this is part of the charm. My sons watches the Humpty Dumpty story over and over and marches around the living room when “all the kings men” start marching around trying to help Humpty.

Pavel Lungin’s new Russian film OSTROV (”Island”) has taken Russia by storm and made quite an impression at Sundance. Is this film about Orthodox Christian spirituality really worth the hype or is its appeal very limited.

Ostrov is worth every second of your time! It is beautiful, touching, and truly profound. The basic plot is about Anatoli, a young Russian boiler-stoker during WWII. Captured by the Nazis, he chooses the coward’s route and shoots his Captain to save himself. The Nazis still bow up his barge and he washes ashore on a tiny island monastery in the Barents Sea. Thirty years later, he’s Father Anatoli–and is he a madman-boiler stoker, or is a a near-Saint who can heal and who knows things?

Father Anatoli is still repenting, despite seeking God’s infinite forgiveness, and this is the theological crux of the film: The free grace/cost-of-discipleship paradox. This spiritual conundrum is hardly unique to Orthodox Christianity! Pious Lutherans will recall Nazi-executed Minster/Theologian Deitrich Bonhoeffer’s book, ‘The Cost of Discipleship,’ for instance.

Anatoli uses his gifts to be a Fool for Christ, who, through humility, can identify the prideful sins of others– Father Job’s vanity at book learning, Father Filaret’s covetousness, etc. Although being a Fool for Christ is more understood in Orthodoxy, the concept exists in the west–witness “Blasillo el Bobo” in the classic Spanish novel ‘San Manuel Bueno, Martir’ by Unamuno.

The acting in Ostrov is superb, the casting subtle and sublime. The cinematography (wide-screen monochromatic)is stunning.

This is a must see for anyone interested in spirituality or repentance.

A final note– in both message and deliberate pacing, OSTROV is a splendid reproach to our quick-fix society, and the spiritual quick-fix, as Father John the Hieromonk of St. Michael’s Skete in Canones, NM points out in a recent article.

I was at first reluctant to watching this movie because of all the hype it receives in Russia currently. Boy, was I wrong! The film is simply brilliant. Don’t even think of missing it! Everything is great about this movie. The story is really short to get you into the mood in the orgasmic kind of way, and it will keep you at the edge of your sit to the very last second.

Absolutely beautiful actors. The film is shot in beautiful widescreen - breathtaking cinematography. The only thing bad about this movie is that it is too short! Don’t get me wrong, it is a full-length film, but it’s ended just a couple of hours earlier than I expected

The movie is not just for movie buffs. It is definitely very artistic, but it is still for everybody. Just watch it! You will not regret it.

I got this for my teenage sister. Wizards of Waverly Place is her favorite show and Selena Gomez is her idol. The thing I don’t like is that you only get four episodes. It’d be better if Disney released full seasons of their shows rather than banking on $15 for just four episodes. They finally released Hannah Montana full seasons after releasing many 4 episode discs over the past couple years.

I find Wizards deeply entertaining. The whole cast clicks very well and Selena Gomez is just awesome. However, you can get the full seasons of 1 and 2 through iTunes. You can get for $41.79 for season 1 and season 2 each. Then you can watch it on your computer, your iPod Classic, your iPod Touch, your iPhone, or connect your iPod up to your tv and watch it there. However, this product is a great alternative for those who don’t have and iPod or iTunes.

I am glad they are putting these out on DVD. My only complaint is the 2 episodes per disc. A lot of people who buy these are going to buy several (or all of them), and a DVD should be able to hold 6-8 episodes (or more?). I would pay more to get them on fewer discs.

Back on September 8, 1966, television was forever changed when the first broadcast episode of Star Trek hit the air waves. No one at that time knew that the series would endure for over thirty years, building up a strong, loyal fan base that would serve as the spring board for three new series and a string of successful films.

Looking back, it’s interesting to think that Trek started with the rather so-so episode, “The Man Trap.” It’s the story of McCoy’s old love who happens to turn out be a salt vampire. Along the way, we meet several members of the crew and get exposed to what could be described as a day in the life of the starship Enterprise. We also get a snippet of time with all the major players who inhabit the first 12 episodes of the original series.

On the far more enjoyable side is the classic episode (that Next Generation blatantly ripped off in only their second episode) “The Naked Time.” The crew is infected by a virus that makes them act as if drunk and brings to the surface emotions and characteristics the crew usually leaves buried. In addition, the ship is spiralling down toward a dying planet and is forced to race against time. “The Naked Time” has it all from character development and moments to a taut, danger ridden plotline to some super music by the master of Trek music, Alexander Courage. It’s simply a masterpiece of Star Trek and one that deserves another look. It also features what many consider some of the best acting of the original series–namely in the conflict between Kirk and Spock in the briefing room. And really, it’s hard to argue…

My only major complaint with the DVD (and thus what keeps it from five stars) is that Paramount decided to package the episode as the special edition which was shown on the Sci-Fi channel. Paramount decided to mess with the original credits for the first couple of episodes until fan outcry forced them to restore the original version we know and love. However, instead of spending the time to replace the credit, Paramount used the Special Edition opening for “The Man Trap.” I know it’s nitpicky, but this small “correction” mars an otherwise flawless DVD and takes a bit away from the viewing experience.

I suspect most fans of this film and Monty Python in general already own a copy on DVD. The bonus features in this new double-disc edition definitely make it worth the repeat buy. Most of the features from the Criterion edition (two commentary tracks, five deleted scenes, radio ads) are here. (The nice 1979 BBC documentary “The Pythons” is the only feature from the Criterion version missing from this new set.)

The new hour-long documentary included with this edition is worth the purchase alone. All five surviving Pythons are interviewed and offer a lot of insight into the film, from its conception, to the controversy surrounding its opening (in the US and in the UK), to its lasting standing as the Pythons’ greatest work. (Yes, I know, many fans like “Grail” even more.) I’m always pleased to see up-to-date interviews with the team, now all in their sixties.

The other significant feature is an audio reading of the original script, recorded with all six members several months before filming began. This is much more enjoyable and watchable than you might expect, illustrated onscreen with storyboard drawings and script pages. The reading is 20 minutes longer than the film, and you hear some bits that never made it past this stage.

And the film itself, of course, is a treasure. A hysterically funny, yet thought-provoking satire whose target is group-think in general, and not merely religion or superstition.

This is the 4th iteration of this movie that I have owned. My first was on VHS, then came the Criterion LaserDisc, which was followed by the Criterion DVD edition. I really wasn’t expecting much of an improvement over the Criterion DVD since this is an older movie. Regardless of what version you own, if you are a Python fan, you are in for a HUGE surprise with this latest edition on Blu-ray. The picture is near perfection with only a couple of scenes where I noticed the tiniest bit of film grain. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the remastered sound elements. After trying the different sound choices, I found the PCM soundtrack to be the best. I really wasn’t expecting the sound to be that great for this movie, but BOY was I surprised. Sony has truly outdone themselves with this latest high def remastering of Life of Brian. This is the absolute best I have ever seen or heard of this zany film. There are details in the picture that I have NEVER seend before, and I have seen this movie MANY MANY times. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the special features were not in HD, but that is not that big a deal since everything else about this title is just spot on.

There are many who would say this movie is a sacrilege. As a Christian, I would disagree with such a statement. I have heard some say that this movie is making light of Jesus’ ministry, and especially his crucifixion. They are missing the whole point. I think this movie illustrates how some people will blindly follow religious leaders, or will just go with the crowd without really questioning what they’re doing, or why they’re doing it. The scene where Brian is mistaken for Jesus and chased by the crowd is a good example. When his sandal falls off, some take it as a sign that they should remove their own sandal, while some choose to follow the Holy Gourd of Jerusalem. How can anyone NOT see the humor in that??? Also, what if there really were some in the far back of the crowd at the Sermon on the Mount who couldn’t quite make out what was being said??? I have seen this movie countless times, and at no point is Jesus ever actually made fun of. Even the crucifixion scene is obviously not a slight on Jesus’ own crucifixion. He is not the only person to ever be crucified, since there were countless others who suffered this horrible form of death. The crucifixion scene obviously is not about Jesus’ crucifixion since there are much more than three men being crucified. Of course, I’m sure there are those who would disagree with me. If you do find this movie to be offensive, then simply don’t watch it. After all, this is still a free country. To those of you who have longed for a pristine version of this classic Python piece, you MUST get this one on Blu-ray. I will be waiting patiently for Sony to deliver a comparable version of the Holy Grail on Blu-ray soon.

The final four disc in the Utena storyline continue the unique tale of our hero Utena while further developing the other characters as well. While not containing some of the funnier moments embedded in The Black Rose Saga, the Apocalypse series focuses on bringing the viewer deeper into the history of Utena and it’s deeply involved mythology. The story line can become a little confusing near the end but the series wraps up in a touching and ultimately satisfying end. The Apocalypse Saga will leave you glad for the experience and the best part, it will leave you wanting more of this excellent saga.

The roses, an excess of pink, incredibly feminine designs for all the characters (including the male ones), and its rather distinct artistic style may turn some viewers away from Utena. It almost kept me from watching it, at first. But for some reason I bought the first DVD, and I have never regretted it.

Utena is a weird show. You realize that within the first episode. It is surreal, dreamlike, and yet though it may seem random at times, there is method to the madness. It begins with a girl who met a prince when she was young. He gave her a ring that would lead her to him when she grew up. So impressed was she by him, that she decided to become a prince herself. Now that girl, Utena, dresses in a boy’s uniform and attends a school where all is not what it seems.

The real strength of Utena lies in its characters. There is a large cast, and each character’s motivations and emotions are explored in different episodes. These are not the cardboard cutouts you find in a lot of anime; they are complex people, and their individual tales are often poignant. Utena also boasts one of the best villains I’ve ever seen in anime, rivaled only by Berserk’s Griffith. It is a smart show, with a lot of depth. There’s also some humor in it, and for people who like battle (like me), there are duels every episode or so. Usually these fights are fairly predictable, but they’re still fun to watch.

The last arc of the show has one of the best finales in any anime. It may leave the viewer a bit confused; but the dreamlike quality of the show is used to very good effect here. For anyone who likes well-developed characters, something a little different from usual, a good storyline with real substance to it, Utena is an excellent anime.
