The quality of this DVD is amazing. An 18 year old Sophia was precise and convincing in her “lip sync” of the great Renata Tebaldi. Her acting phenomenal. This is a treasure.

One good thing about the newest generation of horror film directors is their willingness to move on to something different, to make horror films with new ideas and stories rather than just rely on the tried and true. It may not always make the best film or the scariest, but at least they make the attempt and deserve credit for doing so. Such is the case with WALLED IN.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Walled In! Click Here

The film opens with a young child trapped in a tall yet small cell, perhaps 2 feet wide. As she calls for her father, the cell beings to flood with a dark bluish gray substance we can only assume is concrete. It fills until it covers her and we move forward to the present day.

Mischa Barton plays Sam Walczak, a young woman who has just graduated from her training as a demolition engineer. Belonging to a family and demolitionists, it is her job to study the structure of a building and decide the best way to bring it down. As a graduation gift, her father presents her with the task of setting up the demolition of a building made by a famous architect.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Walled In! Click Here

Arriving at the location, she is stunned to find that the building stands alone in the middle of nowhere. The building is a huge apartment complex. The inhabitants left in the building are sparse at best. They include the landlady Mary (Deborah Kara Under) and her strange son Jimmy (Cameron Bright), an elderly woman who was secretary to the architect and still houses many of his records/books in her apartment and a vet who lives there as well.

As Sam wanders the halls and checks out the building for stress points, she is observed by someone. We discover that it’s Jimmy, who is attracted to her, yet definitely too young. Sam sees this and although engaged, somewhat flirts with the boy in the hopes of learning more about the building.

Jimmy does reveal a lot about the building and its architect. It seems that the building was the site of a nefarious murder many years prior, one that took the life of his father. While a handy man was blamed for the deaths, it was thought that the architect was behind them all, especially since he disappeared shortly after they occurred. In all, 16 people were missing and a few were discovered, cemented into the walls of the building.

Sam and Jimmy continue to look through the building, including a secret room that always remains locked upstairs. While there, Sam witnesses Mary talking to one of the walls and acting strangely. As she wanders these halls, her own sense of fear and claustrophobia take hold and she begins to feel as if she’s being watched. Good call.

Someone is watching Sam. But just who is it and what they want aren’t revealed until near the end of the film. And just what evil presides over this house and why don’t come out till the building is nearly destroyed with Sam in it.

The majority of this film is build up and revelation as to the secrets of the building and its designer. Like an onion, pieces are peeled back and we discover not only the secret of the complex itself but that of its tenants and the reason it was built like it was. Giving up that information here might provide you with some answers, but the development of those answers are what actually make this movie better than one would expect.

Suffice to say that there is an evil here and one that affects all who enter. And it’s not simply one person keeping an eye on the others but more than one. The last portion of the film, perhaps 30 minutes or so, deal with what happens when Sam discovers the evil behind the building and her attempts to escape from it.

The acting here isn’t the best but not the worst either. Barton does a standard job but you sometimes question why the character doesn’t just stop digging into the secrets and call for back up from her family. If it’s simple pride because it’s her first job, okay but still, when in over your head, look for help.

Bright as Jimmy is an odd choice. Having seen him in several other films, his characters always seem a bit off. It’s as if you know up front that he’s troubled and going to be behind a lot of what’s going on. While he does a good job, perhaps someone else might have been a less obvious choice for the role. Then again, maybe he isn’t what he seems to be at first. You’ll have to watch to find out.

The movie clocks in at 91 minutes and all offer an interesting tale of horror that doesn’t rely on gore or chainsaws. Instead we get a thoughtful well thought out plot that makes you glad you’re not renting here. It’s that sort of creepy old dark house feeling you got from classic films and yet it takes place in a modern setting. The spirits are definitely up to something here and just what or who isn’t something you’re likely to guess up front. For an interesting horror film that delivers, this one comes off pretty well.

Walled In (Gilles Paquet-Brenner, 2009)

The trailer for Walled In was hands-down the best trailer I’ve seen so far in 2009. That always means one of two things: either the movie it belongs to is going to be eight different kinds of totally awesome or one of the worst movies I see that year. And while Walled In has its flaws, it’s definitely closer to the awesome side of the equation. In fact, I’d call it the best movie I watched this week without much hesitation.

Sam Walczak (The Oh in Ohio’s Mischa Barton), a newly-minted engineer at her father’s demolition firm, gets sent on her first assignment–the government-ordered demolition of a high-rise apartment building in the middle of nowhere. The building still has a few quirky inhabitants, most notably the caretaker, Mary (Paranoia 1.0’s Deborah Kara Unger), and her lonely son Jimmy (Cameron Bright, who will soon become the heartthrob of teen girls everywhere in New Moon and Eclipse). Jimmy and Sam hit it off, though Jimmy seems to be reading a bit more into it than Sam intends. Things get a touch tense when Sam’s boyfriend (Saw IV’s Noam Jenkins) appears, but the romantic entanglements take second fiddle to the ghosts wandering around the place. You see, the nutzoid architect who built the place entombed sixteen people in the foundations of the building. While they were still alive. And they ain’t happy.

No, the movie is not without flaws. Yeah, there are some minor plot holes (I think the people who were complaining that the movie was one big plot hole just weren’t paying close enough attention), and some of the acting was worse than average, but about ten minutes into this movie, I started saying to myself, “who is this kid playing Jimmy? ’cause man, he’s good.” Unger is always a treat, and Barton is always at least capable. The plot is a lot of fun, and the haunted house theme just never gets old; just in the past decade we’ve had six or seven really good haunted house flicks to balance out the junk. Paquet-Brenner brings in some very cool variations on the theme to keep things fresh here, and it works. I just have one request: can someone translate the Serge Brussolo novel from which this film is adapted? I’ve gotta get my hands on this. *** ½

In season 3 of Grey’s Anatomy everything fell apart. Everything that could go wrong did. George and Callie split, Izzie and George made a huge mistake (in my opinion) in trying to make things work out. Meredith feared commitment and Derek wanted to commit. And in the aftermath of Meredith’s near death experience, she finally broke down. And then there is Burktina (Cristina and Burke)…which never happened. Like I said, everything that could go wrong did. Season 3 was about breaking the characters, exploring them and making all the mistakes. Season 4 is about mending and fixing those mistakes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grey’s Anatomy: The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

This season started slowly, painfully slow I shall say. The characters seemed stuck, all of them. And try as they might, they were unable and unwilling to change. Then, it happened, slowly, but surely, they started to evolve. They started to look beyond themselves and their problems and they started to grow and mature.

The first half of the season (pre-Writer’s Strike) was slow and all consuming within itself; it refused to be bothered with the world around it. The first half of the season brought in a lot of change, but none of the characters were equipped or willing to deal with it. Cristina refused to confront her non-wedding, Meredith was still reeling from her near-death experience and her inability to commit with Derek. Nevermind the fact that she has to deal with a new sister! Izzie and George had to deal with a new relationship and a failed one. Alex had himself and Ava to deal with. We also saw some new characters and some characters leave. All in all the first half of the season was horrible, stale, and unable to foster change.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grey’s Anatomy: The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

And then the strike happened, and the creative juices must have been at their peak because what we saw in those 5 last episodes was pure brilliance. The characters finally exploded into full blooded beings in our TVs, they were finally in route to who they are supposed to become and they are finally a testament to what Grey’s Anatomy is supposed to be: great, emotional and captivating.

I mark the beginning of the change with the arrival of Addison, she came in waltzing in her Zen zone and her unwillingness to get stressed out and reminded everyone of who they are supposed to be and what they are supposed to be doing, all the meanwhile getting stressed herself. The show then became magnificent; my blasé viewing of the show went out the window and FINALLY I became engaged in it once more. The second half of the season was so good that I made every other crappy episode worth it. It even made season 3 worth it because we finally got to see our characters evolve. Thus, whereas Season 3 was the breaking apart of everything, this Season 4 was the mending and evolution of Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s is great…but the season premiere was pretty silly with that whole Izzie-deer thing, I mean, c’mon, I know it’s TV and all, but let’s have a little realism. I, too, felt she was pretty flat this whole season, but didn’t we just learn that was because she is persuing more film roles (the reason she withdrew her name from the Emmy’s).

Meredith and her progression with therapy was pretty cool; even with all her whininess (and her high pitched laughter), her future with Derek looks pretty promising. And who cares about Derek so long as he looks good!!

Callie and Hahn–I agree that’s an interesting dynamic, but Grey’s has been viewed as the multi-racial TV drama, so why not incorporate the whole lesbian thing too? It’s not my cup of tea, but after what Callie’s gone through (and Hahn never gave into Sloan’s pursuit), that too was a natural progression.

Christina and the aftermath of Burke…you know, at the 3rd season finale, I thought the whole, “I’m free” thing was pretty powerful, but we haven’t seen really anything more from Christina and how she wasn’t herself when she was with Burke–but what HE made her. I think she will have some growth in the 5th season.

George is a bit of a geek–but whatever. Who didn’t see him and Lexie getting together at some point?? Hasn’t this show made sex with pretty much everyone standard??

Chief and Sloan–supporting characters with little weight this season (I think), but I do believe we will see Sloan’s role grow more in the coming season. He doesn’t do much but sleep with everyone, but that has to change at some point…?

Alex–I have yet to figure that one out, but Ava/Rebecca has to go away once and for all.

Bailey–our precious Bailey–who I think holds the show together–that was a big bummer about her and her husband, but she is trying to put her family first.

Overall, I believe the season was better after the strike was over and the writers and producers found once again what made Grey’s so special in the first place. I believe they set up the end of season 4 for a great season 5….should be great to watch come the fall!!!

I bought this dvd because I had wanted to watch Sarah Chang perform for so long. I was so lucky to find this “gem” dvd. She, a young Korean-American virtuoso, beautifully played such popular pieces as “Zigeunerweisen”, “Carmen-Fantasie” and “Meditation from Thais”. I noticed her way of playing the violin was different from other violinists including Gil Shaham, whose “Carmen-Fantasie” I own on dvd is also great. Her rendition was precise, strong and soft with such detail. As soon as I got this dvd, I watched the three pieces more than three times in a row. I mean, I just couldn’t stop watching her perform. Even though her playing was interrupted by audience’s clapping in the middle of “Carmen-Fantasie” and also by a child’s crying in “Meditation”, her redition never stopped being brilliant. In particular, her “Meditation” was the most peaceful and beautiful one I’ve ever listened to. Watching Domingo and the soprano was also enjoyable. Berlin Philharmonic always makes sound great.

Technically, this dvd is at top notch. Great vision quality with 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Great audio quality with PCM stereo and dts/DD 5.1. The production was also almost perfect with the wonderful camera work. The studio is “EuroArt” (not Naxos of America) and region free (0).

Conclusion? You will love this dvd especially if you like violin music. As the other reviewer below, I just hope more Sarah Chang concerts dvds will be released…pretty soon.

I watched this DVD for the first time with some friends, and we were all reduced to ooohs and aaahhs. Placido Domingo brings out the best in everyone, and he sings at the end. The interviews with Placido Domingo and Sarah Chang, and behind the scenes documentary are also interesting. I hope there will be more DVDs featuring Sarah Chang. Her music can fill my soul with joy, and I hope that it will do the same for you.

And they say that creative, bizarre shows don’t make it on TV anymore…Meet Earl(Jason Lee). Earl is a petty criminal who one day won $100,000 on a scratch-off ticket. Celebrating his unexpected win, Earl is hit by a car, loses the ticket, and ends up in the hospital where he decides that he needs to balance out all the bad things he has done in his life. Finding the ticket and getting his money, Earl is convinced that karma has put him on this mission, much to the dismay of his brother Randy (Ethan Suplee), his ex-wife Joy(Jaime Pressley), and her new boyfriend Darnell the Crab Man(Eddie Steeples).

Since the airing of the pilot, both critics and audiences have been blown away by My Name is Earl. Besides a extremely talented cast whose comedic chops are perfectly timed, Earl has a solid cast of writers who create 22-minutes of laugh out loud comedy every week. Earl’s guest stars in Season 1 rival only Scrubs, including Giovanni Ribisi, Johnny Galecki, Beau Bridges, Jon Favreau, Adam Goldberg, Christine Taylor, and Juliette Lewis.

Season 1 of My Name is Earl offered 24 solid episodes, including the pilot, and received the Director’s Guild Award and the People’s Choice Award for Best New Comedy, and was nominated for a half dozen other awards including 2 Golden Globes. This would be a 5-star show but it remains to be seen if the writers and producers can keep this level of energy up for several more seasons. As First Seasons go though, this is one of the best to come along since Scrubs.

The DVD set just released and it is jam packed with extras include 8 episode commentaries, a 15-minute mini-episode that incorporates the Family Guy into the show, deleted scenes from 6 episodes, some outtake reels that highlight the improvisational nature of Jason Lee, Jamie Pressly, and Ethan Supplee, and a Behind The Scenes look at the show. This is a solid and fun show, and it deserves a place in your collection. Highly Recommended.

If you’ve read the last 14 reviews, you already know the premise and story of the show. Here’s what you won’t read from anyone else: Under this show’s veneer of blue collar humor lies a deeply spiritual and optimistic journey. The show is comedy in the classical sense–characters in a low place are raised up in the end by a series of events–but it is mainly about repentence, restitution and redemption. Earl decides to change his life for the better and stops doing the bad things he did before (repentence), he goes about seeking forgiveness from the people he has wronged and tries to restore what he has taken from them (restitution) and in the end he and the wronged people are better off for it (redemption). I believe the writers chose well in using the concept of instant karma as the vehicle–the driving force Earl has faith in–because that is a universal concept that all religions can identify and respect. Also, I love how intelligently subtle the change in Earl is portrayed. In every episode you will see a flashback of the “before” Earl along with “new” Earl; notice that there is no difference in clothing or hairstyle from before and after. The change is in his heart and behavior only, where it matters. TV writers usually smack you over the head with visual cues.

Anyone who has strived for spiritual improvement can readily identify with Earl. There are some aspects of that path that are easy and immediately rewarding, but that’s not always true. Sometimes you have to suffer the misunderstanding, mocking or rejection of your friends and/or relatives or difficult, unforgiving souls. Later epsiodes have their difficult moments and Earl has to hold tight to his faith to get through it. The most significant of such situations is in the episode “Number One”, when Earl gives all his money to the man who was supposed to win it. He ends up losing everything except his faith, hungry and homeless, but is finally restored. Lynard Skynard’s “Simple Man” was the perfect music for that scene.

I am very happy to see this show put on DVD because NBC edited bits and pieces out when they reran the episodes to make more time for commercials. Some of those bits are important to comedic timing and storyline flow. I highly recommend you get this collection and try to view the episodes through its spiritual prism.

The lyrics to Jill Jackson’s and Sy Miller’s simple, beautiful 1955 song say “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” This DVD, written and directed by David Beardsley, offers an excellent introduction to the life and ideas of an essential American thinker whose pursuit of the indwelling peace that can overcome the world deserves serious attention from every American - and indeed from every person in any country - who is troubled today by the violence and tyranny racking the whole earth and his or her own soul. It is the intention of all those who collaborated on this video biography that those who watch it will be moved to read more by and about Ralph Waldo Emerson. I believe this will be its effect on most viewers, and that is a very good thing.

This is phenommenal…Not only is it an illuminating glimpse at one of our great early thinkers, but it was an epiphany for me to discover more about Emerson’s life that I was not previously aware of.

The acting in most gay movies is TERRIBLE, so I was pleased to stumble across Derek Magyar’s performance in “Boy Culture”. The character he plays is extremely sexy (mostly because he is guarded almost to the point of being completely unavailable). The character “X” is a high priced male hustler with a very select client roster. “X” appears to the outside world to be a hardened, almost heartless, shell of a human being, but the audience is privy to his innermost thoughts. Through this internal dialog, we learn that “X” is “saving himself” for someone who loves him, and has convinced himself that he is secretly in love with his roommate played by the talented young actor Darryl Stephens of LOGO’s Noah’s ARC. If Derek wasn’t a gifted actor, the character “X” would not have been likable (and the audience wouldn’t have cared what ultimately happened to him). But, because Derek IS a talented actor, with above average material that borrows from a classic play, the audience is given the opportunity to invest in what happens to “X”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Boy Culture! Click Here

The story unfolds through sexy dialog that is believable enough if the audience is willing enough to suspend belief long enough to buy into a more serious, and sexier, gay version of “Pretty Woman.” If you let out a little groan at the comparison, be aware that both of these films owe a debt to George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion”. While “Pretty Woman” follows a more predictable, and commercial path with the prerequisite Hollywood happy ending which owes more to “My Fair Lady” than Shaw’s original play, “Boy Culture” is actually closer to the spirit of “Pygmalion”. Gifted character actor Patrick Bauchau, best known for playing the character of “Sydney” for four years on the television series “The Pretender” plays Gregory Talbot, the rich “sculpture” who is intent on molding “X” into his creation. The story appears to follow predictable paths at times, but is actually more complex than what the jaded viewer may expect. Thankfully, the characters in this story often display traits of nobility that elevate them above what they appear to be if only given a cursory inspection. While this film borrows from “Pygmalion,” it doesn’t steal; it veers away from the known story arc to find its own path.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Boy Culture! Click Here

With sexy dialog, the conveyance of raw emotion through his eyes, and a male beauty that rivals the sexiest Titan porn stars, Derek Magyar delivers a performance that is more than worth the average ticket price (a rarity these days to be sure). He emotes a type of vulnerability without giving up his pseudo-macho hustler persona. His character establishes early on, that he is unavailable (symbolically placing his jacket on the empty seat next to him, showing that he will allow no-one to get too close). He is very acid tongued to anyone who tries to remove that “barrier” and get too close, but it is obvious he is doing this in order to protect himself from harm. He pushes people away with “humor” based in a need for self preservation. He prays often (humorously enough he owns a religious Madonna icon -the Catholic version, not the pop-star) asking for forgiveness. It is easy for the viewer to grant this forgiveness since “X” is actually a very passionate, albeit damaged, character.

If this movie were a wide release Hollywood drama with heterosexual characters, Derek’s performance would be a star making role. Although this film is unlikely to become a blockbuster, hopefully it WILL eventually find the audience it deserves. It has the potential to become a gay cult classic, and audiences that discover this small film may well begin to follow this talented cast to other projects. Without spoiling the ending, I found this film to be both unapologetic and hopeful. Considering the lack of gay cinema that offers either of these outcomes, I am delighted to recommend this film. I go to movies to escape and be entertained, and I found this film to be very entertaining escape on multiple levels.

The protagonist (played by Derek Magyar) of “Boy Culture” uses the film to confess his issues to the audience, using a pseudonym, X. X worked his way through the University of Washington by prostituting himself to his dentist. After graduation, he built up a clientele of twelve customers willing to pay very high amounts for his services. (A zoom looked like $5,000/ 1 hour session; X must be very good indeed.) In order to disguise the source of his income from the IRS, X took on two roommates for zero rent each. One roommate is video store employee Andrew Thompson (played by Darryl Stephens), and the other is promiscuous eighteen-year old Joey (played by Jonathon Trent), who lives off an allowance and hasn’t gone past his GED for schooling. One of X’s twelve clients just died, giving him a chance to interview seventy-nine-year old penthouse-dweller Gregory Talbot (played by Patrick Bauchau) as the replacement. This is where the film starts.

X, Andrew, and Joey all want love and a better life. Inevitably a triangle formed, sometimes oriented one way, sometimes the other. In general, Joey wants X, X wants Andrew, and Andrew has sex once with Joey. Each partly expresses his love for the others, but internal issues prevent any resolutions. Gregory develops a strong, confiding relationship with X but holds back a key piece, whose revelation catalyzes the triangle. Everyone moves ahead and gets a happy next stage.

The movie “Boy Culture” is based reasonably closely on Matthew Rettenmund’s 1995 book of the same name. The big changes are that the location moves from Chicago to Seattle, the story line relating to Joey’s brother is gone, Andrew and his family shift from standard Midwest white folk to middle-class, Oregon-based African-Americans, and Gregory is allowed to move from disgrace to helpful uncle-figure. We learn X’s real name. All of these shifts are well done and add value to the story.

The principals all have substantial skin scenes. There are club-goers, bartenders, a hilarious hook-up pantomime, and the like to provide more. It’s all really hot!

All of four the principals are splendid; I look forward to seeing more of their work coming out. Of the actors of smaller parts, I thought Peyton Hinson did especially well as Andrew’s former fiancée, Jill, whose marriage to a pro-football player leads Andrew and X to visit Andrew’s family.

The extras are unusually good. There is a Q&A session at the Tribeca premiere with the director (Q. Allan Brocka), Magyar, Trent, and a producer present. Most valuable is that the director and the four principals each gets an approximately fifteen minute interview to discuss the film, his role, and his choices. The viewer gets to know and like these talented artists even more. There are two deleted scenes as well.

The film does an excellent job of showing the attractions and inhibitions of gay relationships and is certainly the best gay-oriented film of the year. It does so well that it is actually one of the best films of the year, period.

I loved the book. There are various elements and story arcs running through the book that I could not help but wonder how the director [David Yates] was going to pull it off. Well, the movie is definitely much more subdued than its predecessors, both in the effects, the violence, the use of witchcraft, even the color palette is muted for most of the movie, conveying a sense of menace and possible doom in the confrontation between good and evil.

As an ardent fan of the books, and also the movies, I found this particular installment a tad underwhelming. Firstly, I was vexed that the scriptwriters felt they had to include unnecessary scenes that were not even in the book [the waitress and Harry making a date at the beginning, the burning down of the Burrow, etc]. Instead, they left out bits that were actually in the books. Even crucial story arcs, like the use of the Pensieve is not given enough screen time, and seems almost rushed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! Click Here

One of the enduring appeal of the movie franchise lies in its sense of wonder, and being able to transport viewers into a magical realm, where the evil forces under the tutelage of the dark lord Voldemort try to vanquish the forces of good as portrayed by Harry Potter, the Chosen One and also the Order of the Phoenix. In this latest movie installment, I felt that the element of wonder was lacking. Much of what is portrayed is presented as it is, and if this was watched by someone new to the world of Harry Potter, the person would be bewildered and lost. At least in the other installments, especially in the first four, a lot of background information is provided [so that even my husband, who has not read any books in the series was able to follow the story]. For example, there is no hint whatsoever as to why Bellatrix Lestrange has such a venomous hatred of Harry, nor why Harry is bent on going after her [and I'm not saying why here either, for the sake of HP virgins].

I guess part of the problem is that HP & the Half-Blood Prince provides the catalyst for the events that are to transpire in the last book, Deathly Hallows, and the movie version is to be played out in two parts. So, understandably, a lot of ground work is laid out here, resulting in a dialogue heavy movie, and less than spectacular special effects [the Quidditch scene was completely underwhelming in my opinion]. The main characters , such as Harry [Daniel Radcliffe], Hermione [Emma Watson], and Ron [Rupert Grint] are also facing some serious hormone issues and relationship problems, hence the rather subdued tone. Gone are the days of easy bantering and camaraderie…the dynamics between the three have shifted to one of awkward uneasiness, as Ron and Hermione try to come to terms with the changes in their friendship, and Harry deals with his strong attraction to Ginny Weasley. In this, I felt the actors did a great job - the three have come a long way from their first year at Hogwarts, and have truly embraced these roles, portraying them with depth and insight.

Draco Malfoy’s role as portrayed by Tom Felton, finally gets more visibility. Draco is no longer merely glowering all the time, but deals with some real problems that may cost him his very soul, and Felton did a credible job portraying his inner conflict. Michael Gambon is excellent as Dumbledore, relying more heavily on Harry in this story, as he tries desperately to uncover Potions Professor Slughorn’s [Jim Broadbent]one crucial memory concerning Tom Riddle [the Dark Lord] that may help in their fight against the Dark Lord.

The others such as Severus Snape [Alan Rickman], Minerva McGonagall [Maggie Smith],& Hagrid [Robbie Coltrane] have less visibility this time around. It really does focus on a just a few central characters, though Snape does play an important role here [just that he doesn't get as much screen time as I would have liked]. With regards to Snape, I have to say I’m a great fan of Alan Rickman’s acting - he brings great depth to the portrayal of the Hogwarts teacher, eliciting reactions that vary from disgust to anger and even sympathy through the course of the six installments. He impresses even in minor scenes. I do look forward to more of Snape in the last two installments as his role is pivotal to the series! As for the stern but kind-hearted Prof McGonagall, I have read some reports as to Dame Maggie Smith’s ill health and pray that she is well enough to complete the last two movies, as I simply cannot imagine any other actress in her role.

All in all, it is still an engrossing tale, and I have pre-ordered the DVD. The reason I only gave it three stars is because it did not stay as faithful to the book as I would have liked, and lacked the great big sense of wonder & magic I’ve come to associate with the series. This has been the darkest installment in the series thus far - so I can understand the depressing tone underlying the movie, yet, I still feel the director could have used better colors and lightened up some aspects of the movie where appropriate. Btw, I found the score completely underwhelming, and I really miss the wonderful score that was in the earlier movies [except Part 5]. Here’s hoping Deathly Hallows Part I and II will fare better [also directed by David Yates].

My main gripe with the previous Harry Potter movie “Order of the Phoenix” was that for some strange reason they took the longest of the books and turned it into the shortest Harry Potter movie to date. The result was that I felt like I was watching the movie fly by on a speeding train, as it rushed from one key event to another without really taking the time to explore anything in detail.

Now we follow up with “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” and….what a difference. There are plenty of cuts of course, no Harry Potter movie can be free of cuts without being waaaay too long. But the movie’s length was at least comparable to some of the others. The 3 lead characters were as spot on as ever. Michael Gambon finally brings a bit more warmth to his portrayal of Albus Dumbledor than he brought to the last few movies. Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy with all the depth one would hope for in his most important role in the series. Alan Rickman isn’t seen too much as Severus Snape, but when he is he’s as wonderful as ever.

I really think this may be the best Harry Potter film yet, and I was really starting to think after the last film that the story had gotten to big for them to manage in film. Good work guys.

This is a wonderful movie! It is, to some extent, a typical “underdog sports team with all sorts of drama wins everything despite the odds” movie. But it is better than that. Girls will love it.

My daughter and her team watched this movie and loved it. It is very inspirational.
