Garfield the cat is a fat, lazy, self-centered, and entirely lovable ball of orange fur. He lives with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, a good-hearted young man who has up to now been unlucky in love, but has a huge crush on Garfield’s beautiful vet, Liz. One day, after Jon finds Garfield has eaten himself silly on his favorite dish, lasagna, Jon uses it as an excuse to take him to see Liz. This is a happy turn of events for Liz, who has been looking for someone to unload an unwanted dog on; an adorable little pooch named Odie. Soon, Odie is Jon’s favorite pet, while Garfield is finding himself in the doghouse. But when an unscrupulous TV personality from the nearby city spies Odie’s dancing skills at a local dog show, the simple minded little pup suddenly turns up missing. With feelings of guilt forced upon him by his neighborhood friends and his own conscience, Garfield decides he must go on a quest to the big city to rescue his new friend. From here on out it’s a typical Garfield adventure with all the feel of his wonderful animated series and specials, full of excitement, danger, comedic antics, and fun!

In 2001 we lost Lorenzo Music, the true voice of Garfield. Bill Murray (one of the genuinely funniest guys around) fills his shoes in this live-action feature, and he does it well! No, he doesn’t sound EXACTLY the same, but there is something very familiar in their voices and deliveries. In fact, Lorenzo voiced Bill Murray’s character, Peter Venkman, for the first part of the “Real Ghostbusters” animated series’ run. Bill has exactly the right dry, sarcastic, and disinterested wit needed for the role of Garfield. One reviewer complained that he sounded bored. PERFECT! In this movie Bill Murray IS Garfield. I usually have complaints about CGI. I still don’t think it’s as perfected as the industry seems to think it is, but the fact remains, Garfield looks great. He looks real, yet he looks just like Garfield. Bill does him perfectly. His personality is totally intact. I read a review that complained about Garfield going on an adventure to save Odie, saying Garfield would never do something like that because he’s too selfish and self-centered. Folks, if you are not a fan of Garfield’s animated exploits, perhaps you may feel the way that reviewer did. The comic strip only gives us a few moments in Garfield’s life each day, just enough for a simple gag or sarcastic remark. In the animated series and specials we see all the aspects of Garfield’s personality. Under all that selfish fur and flab lurks a warm-hearted, loving cat that would do anything for his family (complaining the whole time, I’ll grant you). Therefore, if you only love the brief, sarcastic moments of Garfield you read in the comics, perhaps you just won’t get it. Fans of Garfield in animation will understand this film much better. After all, Jim Davis had a hand in this too, he didn’t just completely turn things over to Hollywood.

Many complaints about “Garfield: The Movie” are from those who have prejudged this film without seeing it, or from folks who simply don’t dig family entertainment. True, Garfield and the other animals move their “lips” when they talk, unlike in the cartoons and comics. The fact is, as long as the humans can’t hear what they say, it doesn’t matter. According to Jim Davis, they chose to do this because it just looks better on screen, and he’s right. Movies like “Homeward Bound,” that rely on animal telepathy, can still be great films, but there’s something a little more comfortable (oddly enough) about films where the animals actually “speak” when they speak. It’s a very minor complaint, even to this long time Garfield fan. A more worthy complaint is over the fact that Garfield is the only CG character. This is also blown out of proportion. It’s not that bad for the most part. CGI effects are far more distracting in movie previews, before you are engrossed in the films that feature them. In fact, the only visual aspect that I found really distracting was the fact that Nermal was a Siamese cat instead of a cute gray kitten. Contrariwise, Arlene looked more like a full grown Nermal. I really felt they should have reversed the cats that played these rolls, and I’m still not sure why Nermal wasn’t a kitten. Perhaps these two should have been CG too. But overall it was a visually pleasing Garfield experience, with a perfect Garfield and Odie.

But let’s not overlook the human characters. Breckin Meyer plays Jon, and one of my personal dreamgirls, Jennifer Love Hewitt, is the veterinarian, Liz. While the actors were nicely cast, their roles were not perfectly written. Jon was still a nice guy and almost on the mark, but he wasn’t quite dorky enough. Where was the tacky clothing? Liz was just a little too sweet and into Jon. I guess it wouldn’t have made for much of a romance angle, which was cute in the movie, but it would have been more true to the characters if she had been mostly uninterested in Jon. Overall, I’d have to say this is the only SOLID flaw in the film, and the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars. The villain of the story was very “Garfield the animated series,” but I often think it would have been nice if he had been portraying Binky the Clown instead of an all new character. But all in all, this is a wonderful, family friendly movie that really keeps the spirit of the fat cat intact and should be enjoyable to all Garfield fans if they don’t prejudge or limit themselves to the world of the comics. This DVD edition, however, offers little more to enjoy than the film itself. You are given the option of viewing in full or widescreen, but there are no extra features related to the film. All the disc boasts is a behind the scenes featurette, but it isn’t even about Garfield; it’s about “Because of Winn Dixie,” a dog movie that was not yet in theaters at the time of the DVD release. I highly recommend getting a copy of this fun family film, but you may want to wait for the upcoming “Purrrfect Collector’s Edition.” Not sure what will be on that, but it’s gotta offer more than this first release.

I am little bit surprised that Garfield: The Movie got such negative reviews from critics. I thought it was quite cute and funny.

The plot of the movie is a silly caper. Garfield is well ensconced as John’s favorite companion until John meets a cute nurse at the vets office. In trying to work up courage to ask her out, she fobs a dog off on him, Odie. Well, it doesn’t take Garfield long to get jealous of the new pet in John’s life and he works to get rid him. There are some very funny scenes with Garfield knocking Odie around, trying to play tricks on him, and funniest of all, competing with each other dancing.

Enter a nefarious TV personality who needs a trained animal to hit it big. After seeing Odie dancing at a dog show (another silly and funny caper) he kidnaps poor Odie. And Garfield finds he does have a heart and off to the rescue he goes.

Overall, for some light, comic entertainment the movie was enjoyable. I’m not sure how true the movie is to the comic strip as I am a sporadic reader of it, but it seemed to fit to me.

There are not really any particularly good special features in the DVD.

I have other VCR yoga tape that I have used. This is the first DVD yoga instructional video that I have bought. I am a beginner in the practice of yoga and the way that Sara presents this material makes it very easy to follow. I have been using this DVD every day since I bought the disk. Because this is a DVD I am able to go the part of instruction that I want to review immediately. That is a nice time saving convenience. I use my laptop computer to watch the video so that I can do the exercise and not have to twist around to see the video. It is also convenient to use when I travel. Sara does a wonderful job explaining the poses, showing beginners alternatives to do so that they can still do the exercises and get the benefits of the exercises. I find this video very comfortable to use and would recommend it to anyone that is thinking about beginning yoga. For those of you interested in the spiritual side of yoga there is not much of that presented on this video.

This DVD is excellent for starting out in yoga. I have been interested in Yoga for years, but due to lack of funds and time have never been able to actually go to a yoga class. Instead I bought several videos, some better than others. The problem was that I always felt I was doing things wrong, and unfortunately non of the other videos ever took the time to really explain what I was supposed to be doing. This DVD is different. It explains in detail the correct way to perform each posture without being condesending, tedious or intimidating. It gives down-to-earth instruction for people who want to learn yoga, without necessarily getting deep into the spiritual aspect of yoga. The DVD allows you to skip to specific poses which you may want to review, and it includes a basic 12 posture workout and an intermediate workout which goes into 9 poses you can graduate to once you feel comfortable with the first 12. After watching this DVD I am able to go back and watch and follow my other yoga videos knowing that I am doing the postures correctly. I also feel much more confident about moving on to other yoga videos with more challenging postures. Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies has really helped me improve my yoga practice. I would recommend it highly to anybody who wants to start practicing yoga, as well as people who, like me, have had some experience with yoga but are still not quite sure they know what they are doing.

Enjoy watching SpongeBob SquarePants? Then you’ll definitely enjoy his DVD “Halloween”. It contains ten episodes on DVD(five episodes on VHS).

The DVD is featuring these episodes:

Scaredy Pants

Squidward, The Unfriendly Ghost

Frankendoodle

I Was A Teenage Gary

Immitation Krabs

The Secret Box

Band Geeks

Welcome to the Chum Bucket

My Pretty Seahorse

The Idiot Box

10 great episodes, a must buy for all SpongeBob SquarePants fans, or anyone who has seen the show and finds it amusing.

First of all, understand that the content itself is 5 stars easy…it’s Spongebob! The 3 stars is simply because these collections aren’t as cool as the Season sets. The second release in the continuous line of Spongebob “themed” (compilation) DVDs, Halloween, includes 10 episodes that draw almost evenly from all three seasons of this awesome show. There’s only one episode here actually set on Halloween (”Scaredy Pants”), but some of the others do have a related theme. For example, “Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost” and “I was a Teenage Gary”. Not to mention there’s the hilarious “Band Geeks” and not one but two episodes featuring Plankton, which is always good. As I said it’s not the content, it’s the representation. Considering all of these episodes will be available on the Season sets I have to recommend that be the way you get them. The “Halloween” DVD offers 3 episodes from Season 1, 3 from Season 2, and 4 from Season 3. For a casual fan wanting a good taste of some choice Spongebob, I would say pick it up, but for us Bikini Bottom loyalists and wanna be residents, the complete Season box sets are the only way to swim!

“Daddy, look at that big ugly alligator.”, “That reminds me, I gotta call your moma tonight.” THIS MOVIE IS FUNNY!!!
The first thing I noticed about SMOKEY and the BANDIT 2 was the quality of the digital transfer to DVD. It is done so well, I felt like I was watching a movie made a year ago(aside the old cars and clothes).
I’m 36 and this movie brought back tons of memories. “Son, why isn’t your gun loaded?”, “It’s too heavy when I put bullets in it, Daddy.” This movie is full of hilarious one liners. I found myself to be in a great mood after watching this movie. There’s a semi-sentimental tone that is, at times alittle cheesy but still, touching and not too overboard.
Everyone is fantastic in this movie. Even the gas station attendant is brilliantly funny. I really can’t think of one negative thing to say about SB2.
It’s as good, if not better than, the first BANDIT. I give it 2 thumbs up and a MUST SEE for anyone who loves to laugh.

I keep wanting to see this movie on DVD. To be honest I think this one is the funniest of the three, maybe not the best overall but the funniest. The banter between the Sheriff and his son take this movie over the top. Now if this movie and Used Cars could just be put on DVD…

Exceptional period drama about several Australian soldiers who are placed on trial for murder during the Boer War in South Africa in the 1800’s. Told in flashbacks it is the tale of the stress of combat while fighting against a guerilla who knows the land and is supported by the population. Poor leadership and blurred rules of engagement lead to frustration when a soldier is killed by a guerilla and is in turn hunted down and killed. The soldiers are scapegoats to public opinion and a army ledership who wants to cover it’s own posterior. Were these men truly guilty of murder or just fighting a war and trying to survive?? An exceptional film.

Having first viewed this film well over two decades ago, I watched this new issue last night: I was struck by the excellence of the production.

The re-creation of the Belle Époque period is nothing less than superb. The set designers and costume designers had a real eye for detail here. The dialogue is also very well wrought. And the cinematography is very fine as well.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Breaker Morant! Click Here

Rather than a “war picture,” I would call this a “costume drama”–somewhat in the vein of Masterpiece Theater.

The depection of turn-of-the-century Empire politics is shrewdly executed, and the film highlights a frequently forgotten milestone in historical-geo-political events: the South African (or Boer) War turned out to be a nasty campaign for the English: it lasted much too long (1899-1902); the Brits themselves unnecessiarly lost too many men; and there was too much collaterial damage–e.g., Boer (Dutch) women and children placed in exposed concentration camps, etc.

It was an ugly mess and an issue for the Germans to scrape over.

And it came at a time of rising lower-middle class and working class prosperity and influence in Britain, with an increasingly independant and critical popular media (newspapers and journals). In the home Islands it was recognized that the war had been grossly mismanaged.

Bottom line: the Boer War was the first national-political scandal to really shake the hold of the ruling class (gentry and aristocracy) in Britain. (The next disaster–WW1–would of course finish the job.)

A lesson in history.

It’s thought by many that Marlon Brando was probably one of the greatest actors to grace the silver screen, if not one of the weirdest (at least later in his life). Based on that alone (his acting, not his weirdness), I purchased Morituri (1965), having heard little to nothing about the film. The fact it also stars Yul Brynner didn’t hurt either. Regardless, I am glad I picked this one up, as it’s really quite good.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Morituri! Click Here

The title, as far as I can tell, is Latin meaning `for those about to die’, which seems apt after watching the film. Directed by Bernhard Wicki, someone I’ve never heard of, probably because he was an Austrian who mainly directed German films, the film stars Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner. Also appearing are Janet Margolin (Nevada Smith), Trevor Howard (The Third Man), and a German actor I’ve never heard of named Martin Benrath who I thought was quite good.

The film, set during WWII, begins with German Captain Rolf Mueller being given charge of a cargo ship, leaving Japan and destined for occupied France, one that contains critical raw materials, mainly rubber, important for Germany’s war effort. He’s none too happy with his assignment, as some of the crew is made up of undesirables and political prisoners destined to be tried upon arrival (I would guess they wouldn’t be to eager to reach their destination). The Allied forces, on learning of the contents of the ship, approach Robert Crain, a German demolitions expert and ex-patriot hiding in English ruled India, for the purpose of getting him on the ship, not to blow up the ship, but to disarm the scuttle charges (apparently German ships contained explosives so that if they were to get captured, the captain was to detonate the explosives and `scuttle’, or sink, the vessel to keep it out of enemy hands). The Allies want the contents of the ship, not only to hinder Germany’s war efforts, but also to assist their own. With assistance, Crain does get aboard the ship, under the guise of an SS security officer named Hans Kyle. Members of the SS, it seems, were not entirely popular by any one’s account, especially not by other Germans (think the police and their dislike for their own internal affairs division). This creates complications for Crain/Kyle, as he must secretly search the ship for an unknown number of explosive charges, disarm them, within a certain amount of time, all while keeping the captain and the crew `in the dark’. Not only that, but the ship is forced to take on a group of American prisoners for transport. Things are getting hairier by the minute…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Morituri! Click Here

Most of the film takes place on a cargo ship, providing for a very claustrophobic, tense atmosphere throughout. Brando plays his role in a very subdued manner, but it works well. I thought his German accent a bit odd, not entirely bad, just odd, but I got used to it, especially since the movie runs about two hours. Not only did Brando have the acting chops to pull off his character, but he also had the physique, as he had to run, climb, swing and crawl to get around the ship to disable the explosive charges. He seemed very within character, especially the parts when his character discussed his feelings against against war in general. Brynner was also very good as a non-party German, who, while maybe not believing in his leaders political motives, wasn’t a traitor either. I really liked the diverse complexity, including compassion and kindness, of his character, the sailor committed to his duties, forced to captain this particular ship with a questionable crew. There was a great deal of character development throughout, which served well to really display the differences among the German people in general with regards to their feelings and loyalties towards their leadership and/or their country. I thought the direction of the film to be really good, as the camera always seemed position in such a way to capture the best possible point of view for that particular scene. The story moved along well, although some will say it was too slow, but I didn’t think so…I found myself pretty much glued to the screen, enjoying all aspects of the movie. One of my favorite scenes was when Crain/Kyle is confronted in closed quarters by two German officers from the submarine, which delivered the American prisoners. His ability to play on their own sense of paranoia as they questioned him about his reason for being on the ship was very intelligent and interesting to watch. The plot is complicated, but if you can watch with no distractions, you should be able to follow it along well.

The anamorphic wide screen picture on this DVD looks pretty good, but I did feel it could have been cleaned up a little. There were some very minor flaws visible every once in awhile, but the main thing I noticed was the `softness’ in the black parts when scenes were heavily shadowed. It’s kind of hard to explain, but a bit more noticeable than the other flaws. As far as special features go, there’s a teaser trailer for the film (I’m unsure who made this, but after watching the movie, I felt the person who did make it had no idea or even a sense of what the film was about, as it presented something other than what the movie was, at least I felt), and original theatrical trailer, and trailers for some other, older Fox war films like Crash Dive (1943), The Hunters (1958), and What Price Glory (1952). All in all, I thought Morituri was very decent, well made film rich with characters and a complex plot that rewards those with the patience to enjoy the more sophisticated side of films (I’m not trying to be snobby here, but I do feel this film hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves, unduly so).

Cookieman108

This movie came out amid a spate of World War II remembrance movies in the early 60s, I think, and by then people were getting tired of the genre. That’s a pity, because this is a really remarkable piece of work. There are parts of it that seem almost directed by Orson Welles, particularly the extraordinary camerawork below decks as Brando tries to defuse the bombs that would sink the ship. The script is one of the most searchingly intelligent you’ll ever come across, and the whole thing explores the theme of loyalty and lying and expediency with a brilliance you just don’t see in movies anymore. It’s like Kafka at sea. There are splendid scenes where Brando, using an exaggerated German accent, makes himself into an SS agent, then has to backtrack to present himself in another role to Yul Brynner (who is also excellent in this film) like an instant chameleon. Then he has to act another way for the crew. Then he has to act another way for the woman. Then he has to act another way for the German officers. I’ve never seen Brando do better. There is a sort of hall-of-mirrors strangeness and refined characterization in this film that makes it quite unique. The DVD presentation is crystalline and the play of shadows and light over the decks and underdecks is quite astonishing. Jerry Goldsmith, who must have been very, very young when he did this, did the score. It reminds me strongly of “The Third Man,” with virtual zither-like effects. I don’t want to make this sound too academic and hypercritical, but this odd little movie is one of the smartest, most intelligent, artistic things I have seen in a long while. It makes all the John Wayne movies about Marines taking beaches and saving China from the Chinese, look very, very stupid. Exquisitely written, exquisitely acted, exquisitely filmed. This is the best movie you never saw.

This wonderful film is one of a handful that has the power to call me back to my childhood days and wrap me in warm memories of my Mom, Dad and little brother sitting around the television on Saturday night, watching the late show.

From the opening scenes of this beautifully photographed movie I found myself caught-up in the intriguing post Civil War story of a boy and his pet faun and their fantastic adventures on a scruffy Florida Everglades farm. The film stars Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman in the lead roles, with some of Hollywood’s best character actors in the colorful supporting roles.

Peck gives an Oscar caliber performance as the warmhearted father who tries his best to make a better life for his family, with absolutely no help from the elements, which surround them. Jane Wyman plays his wife Orry, the hardened mother and wife who is so embittered by past tragedies in her life that she refuses to show any love for her one remaining child for fear of losing him too. And Claude Jarman plays Jodie the wistful young son who is just one summer away from adolescence and all the hardships that come with growing up.

This story is chock-full of excitement and adventure sure to please the kids, and each of those adventures is also a great lesson on life that will stay with them for years to come. Just watching Jodie romp with his pet faun for that one fleeting summer is a joyous site to behold and the touching scenes where Orry finally begins letting herself love her son will bring tears to your eyes. And of course the heart-rending scenes of Jodie trying his best to get the yearling to run away so he won’t have destroy it, all come together to make this movie one of the most emotional experiences of my childhood and I must say I believe I’m a better person for the values I learned from this timeless story.

Experience this film with your children, you won’t be sorry you did.

This movie really could not be improved upon; every single performance, from Calude Jarman Jr to Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Chill Wills are astonishingly believable; you never think you are watching a movie, this is truly a window into a real world. The boy who plays Fodderwing is extraordinary, almost unearthly, in his role. The dream sequences with the deer are breathtaking, as are all the scenes which have animals interacting with people. You really get involved in this one; it is not merely a spectator event; you are THERE, with Jody and his parents, and Flag, his little deer. I have seen this too many times to count, starting when I was about 6 years old, and have never lost one iota of awe when I see it again. It is a shame that movies with this kind of heart, emnotion and inner strength/courage are not made anymore; there are simply no stories now to equal this one, and that is a pity. Still, you can go home again when you see this movie; it never loses its appeal, even through repeated viewings, and you are always immediately caught up in the story and the characters. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings grew up in the Florida Everglades, and waa a master at describing the unique flora and fauna which proliferate there; it is a very unusual place, and this story takes you right to the center. A must for every DVD/VHS library, and a family classic for years to come.

I saw this in the movie theater in 1964 and it still puts a smile on my face. It is funny and fun to watch with Yogi, Boo Boo, Cindy and Mister Ranger. Grab a pic-a-nic basket and sit down and enjoy a great movie.

I remember this film when I was a kid. I mostly remember how much I loved the music. Some great songs - even one sung by James Darren! A silly film, of course, but just plain fun as only Yogi Bear can be. I can’t wait to see it again - and on DVD!

Fullmetal Alchemist is an amazing series, but one of its greatest achievements, in my mind, is that it managed to not only maintain its stellar quality over time, it consistently got better and better until it actually hurt to see the series come to an end. Seeing all of the plot threads that have been building throughout the whole series coming to fruition is a great payoff, sure, but it’s made all the better by the fact that nothing feels like a cop-out; there wasn’t a single moment where I thought “Oh, these guys were running out of time and so they just threw that up there.” No, everything flows to a logical, incredibly satisfying and poignantly melancholy conclusion. It certainly isn’t a Hollywood-style happy ending, but that was never what the series was about in the first place. And even more gratifying than the ending was being able to look back on how all of these characters had grown and changed throughout the series: Lust springs to mind first and foremost, having gone from being your stereotypical femme-fatale to a multi-layered, incredibly sympathetic and tragic heroine. And I never, ever thought I’d be able to empathize with a psychopathic monster like Envy, but the final scenes of episode 50 made me come really close to doing so, even as he… well, I won’t spoil it for you here.

In short, Fullmetal Alchemist is an incredibly well done, superbly animated and acted show. The Japanese and English voice tracks are both equally impressive (one of the RARE few animes in which this has happened, the only other to my knowledge being Samurai Champloo). And sure, if you’re reading this product description you’re probably going to buy this anyway and you’ve seen the series before, but in case you haven’t, just know that you’re about to see some of the finest episodes of one of the best anime series ever. This world definitely goes out with a bang, and not a whimper.

I purchased the whole series and the movies. The only problem with it is that there weren’t more episodes. It is the perfect blend of suspense, fantasy, adventure, drama, love, sacrifice, dedication, suffering, reward, deception, cruelty, compassion, etc…__I was surprised at the depth of this anime. Even grown ups will like this one.

LEGEND never really found an audience in theatres despite Ridley Scott and Universal’s constant tinkering with the final cut. Seems many movies of this era were victims of audience test screenings, and the desire to give people a commercial product that went down easy — see BRAZIL for a prime example of how studios think (the “love conquers all” version). So LEGEND was severely edited and rescored with a hasty (but often effective score by TANGERINE DREAM). It was short on plot and long on art direction, but sumptuous visuals and an all-out acting job by Tim Curry and make-up artist Rick Bottin made the movie an easy favorite of many fantasy fans. The movie looks stunning, and the story is a universal plunge into archetypes. Nothing wrong with that, it certainly worked for STAR WARS!

This DVD collection gives you two versions of LEGEND — the original director’s cut with over twenty minutes of added footage and the original Goldsmith score; and in addition, you get the original US release. In essence you get two different movies! The moods vary, the characters seem a little different, with whole new speeches and images to enjoy. If you are a fan of the movie or Ridley Scott it’s a MUST-HAVE! This is what DVD dreams are made of. While many bemoan the fact BLADE RUNNER does not come with its 2 versions — the fact is other than the narration and the happy ending, there is not MUCH different. But here we have a case where you can see what happens to a movie as it goes through development HELL. Fascinating stuff, and it comes LOADED with extras.

The only downside is the director’s cut gets the royal treatment of a 5.1 sound mix while the other version gets a 2 channel Dolby mix, and even the video quality seems different with again the director’s cut looking better than the theatrical release. But at last we can see a widescreen version of either cut, and we get a lot of extras that explain some of why the movie is the way it ended up. Beautiful images, two good soundtracks (I like both though the mood changes), and basically strong performances. LEGEND is a waking dream!

As long as unicorns roam the earth evil can never harm the pure of heart, and that is why the prince of Darkness has sent his most foulest goblins out into the very daylight he seeks to destroy forever to cut off the horns of the last two remaining. But when Jack (the forest boy, played by a very young Tom Cruise) takes Lily (a royal princess, played by the beautiful Mia Sara) to see them, she does the forbidden and touches these ancient creatures. Lily soon discovers it was she who unintentionally lured the unicorns into the goblin’s trap; enabling them to shoot the poison stinger into one of the “beasts”, as they call them, with a clear view. She vows to make things right again as the land becomes shrouded in a blanket of snow and tries to protect the last unicorn standing but is too frail to defend even herself. She then is captured, along with the unicorn, and taken back to the great tree where the wicked come to sacrifice. There the prince of Darkness yearns for a companion and tries to make Lily one of them by tempting her with jewels and power while Jack and his new friends Gump, a jealous sprite and some other nymphs, device a plan to save Lily, the unicorn, and the world before it’s covered in eternal shadow.

Legend wasn’t too well received in theaters and was not a favorite among most critics but it has quickly become a cult classic with fantasy lovers like me. Considering the low budget director Ridley Scott was given in order to make this film in the mid-80s, I thought they did a wonderful job in bringing William Hjortsberg’s dark fairytale to life, which was written specifically for the screen. I also felt the entire cast put on remarkable performances - especially Tim Curry who went through hell (pun intended) to look as devilish as he does here…

Within this two-disc set is two versions of the film. One is the director’s cut, as it was intended to be seen, and the other is the U.S. theatrical version, which I personally prefer, as do many others apparently. There are many extended scenes in the director’s cut that were taken out of the U.S. release to trim down the overall running time but I felt the U.S. version simply flowed better. It also features a more dramatic score by Jerry Goldsmith instead of the more emotional score by Tangerine Dream and doesn’t include the closing credits song “Is Your Love Strong Enough?” by Brian Ferry, ending the movie on a more magical note. But still, it was nice to see both versions and to compare the two. There’s also a lot of bonus materials in the limited edition of Legend that many fans will be very grateful for.
