FROSTYS WINTER WONDERLAND: Just like the song says, Frosty comes back again someday. Frosty returns to play with the children, but Jack Frost is envious of him. He tries to steal Frosty’s magic hat to take his powers. The children build Frosty a wife named Crystal according to magic instructions from Frosty. When Jack Frost finally gets Frosty, it’s his wife that must save him with love.

The studio that made the first hour long cel animated Frosty special that first aired on CBS television in 1969 is Rankin/Bass Productions, the kings of holiday specials. That show was based on the original song written in 1951 by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins. The studio made a terrific half hour sequel in 1976 for ABC television titled “Frosty’s Winter Wonderland”. That special starts right where the first one left off. The character design was by Paul Coker Jr., who did the same work for the first special, so the visual continuity works very well and the characters have that classic Rankin/Bass ‘look’. He also did the unique lettering for the credits in both specials. The famous voice actor Paul Frees stars as Jack Frost, and the policeman. Frees was a regular in studio productions and had also voiced the policeman, ticket seller, and Santa Claus in the original. Jackie Vernon voiced Frosty just like he did before, and Selly Winters is his new wife. The writer for both Rankin/Bass shows was Romeo Muller, and Maury Laws returned as the musical director. Interestingly, while Rankin/Bassis known for the high quality of their original songs, they used Christmas standards in their sequel. While the first show was narrated and sung by Jimmy Durante, the second time we had the voice talents of Andy Griffith. Nothing against Andy, but it is a big change.

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS: The story of two families, one human family of Joshua Trundel the clockmaker, the other a mouse family that lives in their house. In Junctionville, all letters to Santa have been returned and the townsfolk are worried. Turns out that Santa is upset at a letter from “all of us” to the editor in the paper, saying that he didn’t exist. A young genius mouse named Albert turns out to be the culprit. The town starts the Joshua will build a special clock to encourage Santa to come by singing a song “Calling Santa” at midnight on Christmas Eve. But the clock breaks down too. The people turn against Joshua, and he starts losing customers. Soon enough, his family is starving, and so in turn is the mouse family. It is eventually found that Albert is responsible for the clocks malfunction but did not do it on purpose. He is sorry, but his dad encourages him that sorry is not enough, you must fix what you did wrong. If Albert can fix the clock in time, then Christmas may be saved yet, along with the reputation of Joshua.

Rankin/Bass Studio created this wonderful traditional cel animated special for CBS televison. It first aired on December 8, 1974 in a half hour format on CBS television. The screenplay was by Jerome Coopersmith, inspired by the Clement Moore poem, it does not literally follow the lines of the poem until near the end. The memorable song “Calling Santa” is one of best songs to come from the studio. Also has the songs “Even a Miracle Needs a Hand” (really good), and “Give Your Heart a Try”. Character design was by Paul Coker, Jr. who designed the characters appearance for nearly every holiday special from the studio. With musical direction by Maury Laws… Yes, he was the musical genius behind the Rudolph special and it shows. The songs are really good in this special. Lyrics were written by Jules Bass. The actual songs and narration are performed by Joel Gray, and he voices the character of the human father Joshua. Tammy Grimes stars as Albert Mouse, and George Gobel as Father Mouse. John McGiver as the Mayor.

Twas the Night Before Christmas was one of my favorite Christmas specials when I was a kid and it still is.

The story begins with a reading of Clement’s The Night Before Christmas but creatures are stirring because they have learned that Santa is upset with their town and he isn’t stopping to bring toys this year. The story is told jointly from a mouse/human perspective through a flashback to reveal why Santa is upset and how they hope to remedy the situation.

Other Christmas shows (such as Rudolph and Charlie Brown) have received more attention over the years but, in my estimation, Twas the Night Before Christmas belongs in the same lofty company. It’s a great story and we got the DVD so our kids could enjoy the show too.

Easily, the highlight for David Mamet fans is the audio commentary with the man and actor Ricky Jay. These two old friends engage in lively philosophical discussions on a variety of topics, including why President Bush is such a terrible liar, the art of the con game and why psychiatry is a scam. Ricky Jay talks about the nature of the con and some of the lingo involved while keeping Mamet talking by prodding him with questions. Mamet is his usual blunt self as he constantly talks about how Orion messed up distributing the film in this engaging and thought-provoking commentary.

There is an interview with actress Lindsay Crouse who mentions that Mamet wrote the role of Dr. Ford for her (They were married at the time) and says that he spent five years trying to get the film made because the studios found the material too dark.

Buy,Download, Or Stream House of Games! Click Here

Also included is an interview with Joe Mantegna. He talks about his history with Mamet that goes back to Chicago theatre in the 1970s. He eventually appeared in the stage version of Glengarry Glen Ross when Al Pacino turned it down and went on to win a Tony for it. He talks about how he related to the character of Mike and recounts some amusing anecdotes about filming.

“David Mamet on House of Games” is 25-minute making of featurette that the film’s producer and his wife shot in Vermont while Mamet was preparing the film and in Seattle while he was shooting it. There is some great footage of Mamet and his buddies playing poker in Vermont. The same guys also appear in the film in the poker scene.

“The Tap” features the original storyboards to the short con that Mike and his group demonstrate to Dr. Ford but in order to protect the working con man, Ricky Jay changed it to another con called the Flue.

Finally, there is a theatrical trailer.

This is an absolutely mesmerizing film. A wonderful addition to that genre known as “film noir”, the movie is superlative in every way. In his directorial debut, David Mamet shows a keen understanding of the concept “less is more”.

The two main characters in the film are a well known psychiatrist with a best selling book, Dr. Margaret Ford, played with chilly determinism by Lindsay Crouse, and a slick con man, known only as Mike, brilliantly played by Joe Mantegna with a sinister, charismatic charm. She is stiff and formal. He is casual and seemingly easygoing. Each is involved in a field of endeavor that requires a keen understanding of human nature.

They meet by virtue of what each of them does for a living. Dr. Ford is treating a young patient, who claims to be despondent over getting in over his head financially, while gambling at a disreputable and seedy locale known as the House of Games. She is worried about her patient’s potential for suicide, so she decides to go to the House of Games to see if she can straighten out the whole mess.

There, she meets Mike, the person to whom the debt is owed. From the moment they meet, there is a latent, sexual tension between them and an aura of danger and seduction that permeates the air. Intrigued by him, she is drawn into his world, where things are not always what they seem. There are many twists and turns in this most unusual film, which deftly manipulates the viewer.

The film is tautly crafted, and the dialogue itself is highly stylized with its own peculiar cadence. This serves to add to the air of mystery and suspense which infuses this film. There is an excellent supporting cast whose strong performances contribute to the overall quality of this multi-layered film. There is even a small cameo by William H. Macy. It is with good reason that this film was touted by critics as one of the best films for 1987. It meets the high standards set for this genre of film by the late, great director, Alfred Hitchcock. It is simply a stunning tour de force.

I had not seen a telenovela since 1997..and honestly the only reason why I bought this DVD was for one reason…the incomparable and talented DANIELA ROMO played Doña Margarita Ramirez, the bitter and evil woman in “El Manantial”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream El Manantial! Click Here

The story follows 2 rivaling families who continually bicker about the piece of land they own. As both their children grow up and eventually fall in love a’la “Romeo and Juliet”..they soon discover that their love can’t be, as gradually hidden drama surfaces. Lots of suspense and never a dull moment on this soap opera. Adela Noriega plays, yet again, a sweet girl who is tormented by another individual and suffers. I guess we can’t expect anything else from Adela, as she’s been playing the same character for years. Mauricio Islas was not very convincing as the hunk male lead, but luckily the story rarely revolves around him.

The storyline that stole the novela, in my opinion, are that of the Ramirez (Mauricio’s character’s parents) estate. Justo Ramirez (Alejandro Tomassi) and Margarita Ramirez (Daniela Romo) own a big estate in their town and possess alot of control over it. Justo’s incredibly cold and heartless to everyone, including his own wife, who for unknown reasons secretly hates him, and as the story unfolds we’ll realize why. Margarita’s character, played AMAZINGLY WELL by Daniela Romo, is the most layered of all characters. She’s calculating but at the same time compassionate. She knows how to get what she wants but at the same time still feels for Adela’s character, whom her son is in love with. Towards the end of the movie, Margarita suddenly shifts from villain to heroine.

I have read complainnts about this DVD being too short. I for one can guarantee that I never felt that it was short. If anything, it’s a good thing that this DVD has been edited to only 7 hours, as they have cut out all the filler scene. Anyone who has seen telenovelas can tell you this, they prolonge story lines and dialogue to stretch out the telenovela’s run and to have more room for advertisments. That’s the nature of the business and I am glad that this DVD has NO FILLER, ALL KILLER scenes. You shan’t be discouraged. And yes, they have taken out the Luis Miguel theme song “Amor Amor Amor” as they didn’t get permission from WEA Mexico. It’s OK, we can do without it.

Buy this DVD, you won’t regret it. I found it hard to stop watching after a while. I hope they release more entertaining and trashy soap operas with consequential drama like “El Manantial”. BRING ON “CUNA DE LOBOS”!

This was one of the really good novelas shown on TV. The producer, Carla Estrada, is known for her great productions, including her more recent ‘Amor Real’ (the very best!). I recommend this DVD. I just wish it were longer. I’d be willing to pay more for, say, a set of 3 or 4 DVD’s to get more of the story.

This is the ONLY single disc release that is not being included on the Complete Season box sets being released by the same company. All of the 2-hour specials, etc. being released individually are also included on the box sets, but this pilot episode is not. So, if you are a Little House completist, buy this disc to add to your box set collection.

I grew up watching the repeats of “Little House On The Prairie” on TBS however I have never seen the pilot movie. I don’t think it was put into syndication? “Little House On The Prairie” premiered years before I was born, suffice it to say it has been one of my favorite television shows because it is a rare combination of both entertainment and family values. In fact, I cannot think of any television show that is as beloved as this wonderful series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little House on the Prairie - The Pilot! Click Here

The pilot movie introduces the Ingalls family for the first time. The characters aren’t as polished or well-rounded as they are in the TV series. The pilot also introduces their longtime family friend Mr. Edwards.

It starts out by telling the story of why they left their original home (and relatives). Charles finds a nice piece of land and sets up his residence for his family. It is at this time that they meet Edwards who helped in the construction of their new home.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Little House on the Prairie - The Pilot! Click Here

Also included in this movie is a very touching Christmas scene (that was repeated in subsequent “flashback” “Little House” episodes) where the Ingallses celebrate their first Christmas in their new home. Mr. Edwards even plays Santa by surprising the entire family with his cheer and gifts.

Keep in mind that this is not set in the town of Walnut Grove (where the TV series took place). In the pilot movie they lived in a different location which was even more remote with no town and no neighbors to speak of (except the Native Americans who befriend the Ingallses).

Tragedy strikes when their log house catches on fire. I thought it would all be burned down, however they were blessed with a beautiful rainstorm which saved their home and barn.

But their happiness is short-lived when the government tells Charles that they have to vacate. The land is not for them; so they pack up their belongings and say good-bye to Mr. Edwards and go on their way to find a new home.

The movie ends with the Ingalls family riding away. This somewhat loosely explains how they came to their new town (Walnut Grove) in the TV series.

Unfortunately, television these days doesn’t even come close to the high standards that Michael Landon set forth on “Little House On The Prairie.” This is a wonderful pilot and a wonderful TV series!

The Human Stain is available for streaming or downloading.

Benton (of “Kramer vs. Kramer” or “Places in the Heart” acclaim) has always made movies with themes on the subtlest emotional vectors.

If you’ve read the marvellous but somewhat un-adaptable book by the same name (Phillip Roth’s “The Human Stain”) you’ll know what I am talking about and in that case, watch the movie without any expectations of seeing a loyal adaptation because this isn’t.

If you are not familiar with Roth’s book, the movie’s spinal theme may be racial prejudice, but it is really the story of a man deciding, late in life, to love the unknown what is beyond books, pride, even self. To learn that lesson is to turn a stain into a blessing.

Stylistically, I felt the theme could have been dealt with in a somewhat smarter way. Without giving too much away, the “scandal” at the heart of the movie really gets very little screen time which helps diminish its importance in comparison with Coleman’s past. But we see so little of it that it belittles its own thematic importance, and the movie spends a great deal of energy setting up storylines and elements that get little eventual payoff.

This is why I say the novel was a bit difficult to adapt. Following Coleman’s life all the way along, not just its beginning and end, could have made the movie work better as a movie; so could exposing his secret to the world of the film instead of just to the audience. At one point, Coleman’s sister says doing just that would have instantly cleared up all the scandal and misunderstanding. Wrong. It would have made everything much more complicated, much more textured, much less black-and-white. As it is, we are left with a movie about two people whose lives have already ended clinging to each other for comfort.

But the cast alone is something I’d go rushing into the theatres for: Hopkins, Kidman, Harris. Hopkins’ acting here is a slow, painful flowering, and Kidman, who late in the film has a long dialog delivered with such musical delicacy that it becomes an aria of regret and self-apprehension.

In sum, despite my gripes with the handling of the film, this is a film you HAVE to see. I’ll go as far as to say that it’s worth owning a DVD of.

Phillip Roth’s final tale in his trilogy, “The Human Stain” is set in the summer of The Year Of Our Lord, 1998. Otherwise known as “Impeachment Summer”, during which the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky accusations took place, The Starr Report was released, and the whole sordid story of the infamous stained dress was on the lips of everyone, so to speak.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Human Stain! Click Here

The film is told in flashback sequences with the narrator of the tale, writer and friend of main character, Coleman Silk’s. His name is Nathan Zuckerman (a fabulous Gary Sinese). Incidentally, the character of Nathan Zuckerman is the author, Phillip Roth’s alter-ego and is throughout the trilogy of novels.

Coleman Silk, played adeptly by Sir Anthony Hopkins, is a 71 year-old college professor at small New England Athena College. Coleman is wrongfully accused of racial slurs against a couple of absent pupils and loses his tenured position. This shocking news sends his beloved wife into sickness and before long, she succumbs…

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Human Stain! Click Here

If only his family, friends and all the people that Coleman Silk has touched throughout their lives knew the REAL story, such charges would have never been brought about in the first place.

Silk gets lonely and depressed quite quickly, finds the wonderful drug just produced by the name of Viagra and meets the illiterate but beautiful school janitor, Faunia Farley, played by Nicole Kidman. Faunia might be illiterate but she has graduated with honors from “The School Of Hard Knocks”, both figuratively and literally by her Vietnam vet abusive husband Lester, played excellently by Ed Harris. Coleman and Faunia have a torrid affair with the whole New England town buzzing about the goings on. As they get closer and share with one another, Faunia’s past is almost as shocking as Coleman’s. In the final scenes of the film, all secrets are exposed…

Many critics said that the movie script itself was a masterpiece but it was grossly miscast with Hopkins and Kidman in the main roles. I disagree only because there are very few actors that could genuinely and convincingly portray the characters, let alone, carry a heavy drama such as this. The only actor that I could come up with for a recast on Coleman would be Frank Langella, in part because the physical characteristics of Coleman could have been a bit more believable to the viewer.

I must also mention the two actors who play an integral role in the flashback sequences of Coleman’s youth. A terrific Wentworth Miller as Young Coleman Silk and an adequate Jacinda Barrett (from MTV’s Real World London Cast) in a nice turn as young Coleman’s college days lover, Steena Paulsson.

Once watching the movie, you will understand the many significant meanings of the title, “The Human Stain”. Not only the stain of the original sin into which all of us are born, but the stain of hate, hurt, pain, racism, pacifism and yes, even love and death.

I highly recommend “The Human Stain” despite it’s theatrical release mixed reviews and unfortunate lackluster box office draw.

Happy Watching!

This movie is absolutely riveting from start to finish. It is based on a true story of how a group of prisoners in the camp go to extreme risks to protect a three year old Polish Jewish boy [smuggled in a valise and who had escaped extermination in Auschwitz] from the Nazis and certain death in Buchenwald concentration camp.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Naked Among Wolves! Click Here

Besides facing problems in keeping the boy hidden, the prisoners involved , many of whom are members of the communist resistance are also grappling with the issue of armed resistance and how they are going to go about it. The Nazis in charge of the camp suspect something is afoot and try to find the identities of the ringleaders of the resistance, whilst at the same time fearing the advancing Allied forces and what that means for them.

The acting is amazing, and the cast of characters, with familiar names like Armin Mueller Stahl as Hovel, a member of the communist resistance,do a good job of credibly portraying the various characters. The Nazis are also well-portrayed from the two officers who are evil incarnate, bent on finding the little boy and exterminating him, as well as killing off as many prisoners before they retreat, these roles are well done indeed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Naked Among Wolves! Click Here

Besides the main drama of keeping the boy hidden and organising the uprising against the Nazis, not much else os portrayed about the camp. Buchenwald may not be as infamous as Auschwitz, Majdanek or Dachau, but it was a grim place in its own right. It was the scene of mass murder and also medical experiments. And its history after liberation wasn’t exactly a happy ending as Buchenwald was used by the Russians to house Nazi war criminals and also dissenters of the Stalinist regime.

But, despite some flaws, the movie itself is riveting and each scene is filled with a sense of desperation in line with the period in history that it portrays. A must watch for anyone interested in World War Two history. I would also recommend movies like Escape from Sobibor and The Grey Zone, both of which deal with armed resistance against the Nazis in the camps.

For historical significance this movie deserves more than 3 stars, but one should rate movies based on how much one actually liked the movie, thus my 3-star rating. (This still means I liked and recommend the movie!) I watched this after seeing Frank Beyer’s “Jakob the Liar,” and I think “Naked Among Wolves” is the better film. One of my nit-picks with these films is that the harshness and brutality of life in the ghetto or concentration camp is not fully revealed. The films are products of their times, I suppose. And one cannot make actors look like skeletons. The most brutal portrayl of the holocaust I have seen (in a non-documentary) is in the TV mini-series “War and Remembrance.” Neither of Beyer’s films comes close. Again, I’m sure that there was so much an East German film director in the 1960’s and 70’s could do. That criticism out of the way, I think that “Naked Among Wolves” is a fine film with interesting characters and performances.

C’mon, guys!!! This is the age of DVD “extra-mania” with every sort of outtake, alternate scene, missing scene, lost scene, director’s cut,, etc etc being an ESSENTIAL part of a film’s legacy as preserved in the DVD format.

In the case of the moving and powerful “Requiem” (and I agree with the customer who feels that the Jackie Gleason/Julie Harris staircase scene belongs at the top of the all-time list of great movie scenes), the film was obviously released in several different versions.

The confusion begins,in fact, immediately after the staircase scene. There are AT LEAST THREE SCENES from the latter part of the film that are NOT INCLUDED on the DVD:

1.) Gleason’s encounter with the vile Ma Greeny in the hallway when he tells her he’d “like to run into her when you’re not grafted to that torpedo…” (referring to her big thug/bodyguard).

2.) A lengthy (and painful) scene where Quinn is training to be a wrestler, and the moronic Pirelli (Stan Adams, the only actor to reprise his role from the 1956 TV original version) signals Quinn’s wrestling partner to intentionally gouge his bad eye, whereupon Quinn beats the crap out of the guy…..

3.) Gleason’s final speech on the rotten world of Prize Fighting which he delivers to the young wanna-be…..

If Serling ultimately wanted these scenes cut, WHY IN THE WORLD were they ot included as EXTRAS??? I have old video copies of late-night, local TV airings of this film that are FAR MORE COMPLETE than this state-of-the-art DVD release.

What a pity—to see such a cool film treated so poorly (the audio is also very low on this disc; I had to jack the TV volume all the way up to get a decent signal).

I am reviewing the VHS version of this film because the DVD is edited and omits several key scenes. I was bitterly disappointed in the DVD and would not recommend it. However, I enthusiastically recommend the VHS version.

This film is one of the great forgotten masterpieces. Rarely do you see such depth of emotion as displayed by the three leading characters: Anthony Quinn, Mickey Rooney and Jackie Gleason. This is undoubtedly Quinn’s greatest and most poignant performance, he delivers a knock out interpretation of the brain-damaged Mountain Rivera. Make-up and a false nose disguises Quinn’s good looks and he resembles a drunken Victor MacLagen here. Mickey Rooney, always seriously underrated, is magnificent as Mountain’s assistant. And Jackie Gleason is perfection as the greasy, sleazy manager. The scene of him on the stairwell with Julie Harris is one of the great moments in cinema history. What a movie!

I’m at a loss to explain why this brilliant film is not universally recognized as one of the great movies ever made. The acting is superb, the screenplay gripping and the ending will mesmerize you. A thinking man’s flick, to be sure. This is definitely a keeper.

Over the years, it seems that the Robin Hood saga has been a favorite of sorts for film makers to re-invent, manipulate, and showcase again and again. No doubt due to global appeal and the premise of a hero taking from the rich, giving to the poor, and fighting the good fight.

Of all the Robin Hood films ever produced, it’s readily apparent that Prince of Thieves relies less on genuine historical accuracy and leans more toward Hollywood flair which still makes for an entertaining film. Despite using no English accent (which appears to grate on some reviewers for some reason), Kevin Costner presents himself well in the role of Robin Hood. Coupled with fine performances from Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, Christian Slater, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, (to name just a few), the story moves at an exciting pace and hits the mark as a stand up adventure movie that doesn’t disappoint.

As for the new 2 disc special edition release of this movie, it just got a whole lot better. Not having to flip the disc over any more to see the entire feature like in the first release, you now have a new digital transfer and a remastered DTS 5.1 soundtrack and both are outstanding. On disc 2 you have great bonus material enhancing the value and enjoyment even further. Included is a decent documentary on the making of Prince of Thieves, Bryan Adams performing his music video of ‘(Everything I do) I do it for you’, an interactive mediaeval weapons gallery, cast and crew bios, production notes, interviews with cast and crew, and trailers and t.v. spots.

You don’t really have to be a die-hard Robin Hood fan to enjoy this movie. The film has a few flaws and stretches the historical aspect somewhat but it plays out well with plenty of action, adventure, humor, and fun. This special edition release would be a good addition to any DVD collection and I recommend it to everyone.

I was at [local store] one day and saw the extended Robin Hood DVD on sale. I decided to buy it. I thought that I liked all the swordplay, action, fantasy tales. I have to tell you. It was a great buy! It was only [$$] for such a great extended movie.

Plot - Our famous Robin Hood is in a Jerusalem prison. He escapes with a moor, Azeem (Morgan Freeman), and his friend, Peter. Peter doesn’t make it, but wants Robin to promise that he will protect his sister, Marion. Robin agrees and finds his way home with Azeem. They discover Robin’s father dead and their servant blinded. The Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman, who is perfect in the role) killed Robin’s father and is doing horrible deeds to the poor people in the area. Robin and Azeem end up in Sherwood Forest and meet its occupants, including John Little and Will Scarlett. They all team up and decide to fight back against the Sheriff. (94/100)

Acting - A lot of people hate how Kevin Costner speaks in this movie. I really didn’t notice a change in his voice at all. So it didn’t really bother me! I thought Kevin did well as Robin. Christian Slater and Alan Rickman were the two who stole the movie. Christian was great as the mysterious and confusing Will Scarlett. Alan Rickman was hilarious and nasty as the Sheriff. They both were great and should have deserved great credit for their positions. Also, there is a short cameo by Sean Connery. (96/100)

Action and Violence - There is a lot of action and violence in this movie. It could have been rated R. There is a lot of swordplay, arrows being fired into faces, fist fights, and blood. I think any action man would like this movie. Notable Action Scenes : Overrun By Celts, Fiery Assault, Cheating The Hangman, Storming The Castle, and Final Duel. To check out these scenes, buy the DVD and access them through Scene Selection. (95/100)

Sexual Themes - There are some sexual themes in this story. There is a scene where Marion is about to be raped from the Sheriff. Also, Robin swims around nude under a waterfall. So there is some sexual content. I don’t really think it was needed though. (89/100)

The Two Discs and The Extended Version - The extended version is very good. It explains a lot more about the Sheriff. There is also some action put into some places. It is worth the money.

The extended version comes with two discs. Thankfully, you didn’t have to “turn the disc over” to watch the “whole” movie. So I was happy that I could just watch the whole feature film on one disc. The other discs are loaded with extras. There is commentaries, documentaries, making of features, galleries, trailers, and more.
Extended Version (98/100) The Two Discs (94/100)

Overall, this movie is very well done. It is very good and worth the money to buy. Don’t get the original disc. It isn’t worth it! Just buy this. It has tons of action, romance, some comedy, beautiful sets and landscapes, and just an all around great feel to it.
Overall - 94 A

‘Final Fantasy’ is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is clear from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already brilliant history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, ‘The Spirits Within’ represents a piece of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The plot is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell bent on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a haunted wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing ‘wave’ based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid’s theories about a Gaia, or planetary spirit, and wants to use a huge orbital laser cannon to destroy the original meteor, possible destroying the earth in the process. The conflict between these points of view and their shattering effects on the planet are the meat of the film.

Captain Gray Edwards, once Aki’s lover, crystallizes this struggle between the material world of violent reaction and the spiritual world of growth and synthesis. The film plays a bit like an evolved ‘Starship Troopers.’ In many ways, it presents the same visual image, and deals with the same issues. The problem for the director and the viewer is to get past the magnificent graphic work to experience the abiding spiritual faith that is its meaning. Ironically, the film itself is a metaphor for the issues it expresses.

It is almost futile to discuss the film’s animation and design. They are so far above what we are used to that the required superlatives sound trite. In essence, the animation staff set out to create something that is even more real than life, and to a great extent, they have succeeded. This hyperrealism, combined with an almost ballet like feeling of choreography create a sense of moment that makes this seem far more than an action film. The overall animation is carefully balanced so as to keep the focus on the characters. Even so, this film has such a sensory effect that the viewer is tempted to forget the plot and simply observe the screen.

The primary DVD provides the film and a whole set of commentaries (directing crew, animation and staging, composer, and production staff), plus the usual trailers, etc. In the special edition, a second disk adds an extensive ‘Making of…’ segment, the entire screenplay and some analysis of character, vehicle, and prop design. Technically, this is an important film, despite its simplistic plot and characters. For the first time, the definition of what is acting and what is animation is being challenged in a thought provoking fashion.

The first time I fired up FF7 on my playstation console 5 years ago, I marveled at the opening cinematics. At that point, I thought it would be the coolest thing if someone made a movie just like it. On July 11 at 4:30pm I witnessed that dream come true.

I could say it was all I was expecting and more, but that wouldn’t be entirely accurate. The games took 40-50+ hours to complete with a story that had numerous twists to the plot and character developement that went far beyond some bestselling novels. While I think it would be great to see a 6 hour Final Fantasy movie that had such an intricate plot, I realize that would be unrealistic for a feature film. All things considered, I think Square did an outstanding job compressing the story into the time allotted.

The script could have been written a little bit better, but I think it was written the way it was so the average movie-goer would keep up with the plot. I know I didn’t have any trouble following Dr. Sid’s theories about Gaia and what the Phantom’s really were. But that could’ve been from playing the games.. I saw sort of the concept in FF7, with everyone and everything having a spirit.

The cg was astounding and tte physics were.. well, close. Although I think in 65 years, we may be able to bend the laws of physics a bit more, so this could possibly end up mimicing real life in 2065. I’ve read some film critics comment about the lack of consistency with the Phantoms, how they can move through walls and suck the life out of someone, yet can be harmed by conventional weapons. Those guns didn’t look conventional to me… energy weapons would have the effect they did. Opinion: those film critics who commented about that didn’t know what they were talking about.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I intend to see it a few more times before it leaves theatres. This quite possibly gets my vote for the Best Movie of All time.

Something has always bothered me about romantic comedies, i.e. you rarely actually get to see the couple fall in love, you know, actually witness the growth of the bond between them. They just fall in love, but you don’t really get to be there. Except when you’re watching ‘When Harry Met Sally’. Rob Riener made a better film from a Nora Ephron script than she ever could. No offence to her, she’s just a better writer than she is director. And Meg Ryan is so much better with Billy Crystal than Tom Hanks, although I have nothing but respect for Mr.Hanks. The thing is that its not just a genuinely and consistently funny movie, it’s also terribly romantic. It spans about twleve years in the lives of both Harry and Sally, from their first meeting at college. They grow and change, they like and dislike each other, they become romantically involved and then they don’t. The whole thing is very engrossing and witty but never seems far fetched or fantastical. I rate this movie as a contender for cinema’s best romantic comedy. Enjoy the dialogue, the charm, the music, the drama and melodrama and give praise to Rob Riener and his magnificant team who made a wonderful film. The stars have not reunited since and it is possibly for the best as it would be an extremely difficult task to repeat this kind of quality. Chemistry and genuine emtion are hard to come by in this genre, enjoy it while you can. Its available on video and DVD and is rarely edited for T.V.

This review refers to the Special Edition DVD(MGM)…….
A great romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by both men and women is a rare treat. This film is one of those rareties. Director Rob Reiner has us laughing at each other as well as ourselves in this story that lovingly highlights the inner workings of both sexes.

Harry and Sally(Billy Crystal/Meg Ryan) meet for the first time right after college graduation as they spend their first 18 hours together car pooling from Chicago to New York. They instantly fall for each other, BUT… neither one realizes that. Right away we see the difference of how men and women think, and how funny those differences can be. Upon reaching New York they part ways because theoretically “Men and women can’t be just friends”.

Over the years, they run into each other several times(destiny?),still not understanding the other’s ways, but eventually become best friends, even trying to fix each other up, as they see each other through various relationships that didn’t work out.Eventually they do begin to understand the other and feel themselves falling, but why ruin a good friendship with love and sex… right? How long will it take for these two to realize…”It Had To Be You”?

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have a magnificent on screen chemistry, and they’ll have you laughing and rooting for them.
Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are expert at playing the well meaning friends. There are some wonderful scenes of older couples being interviewed that will have you rolling. Rob Reiner does a brillant job of bringing us this everyday world of the gender gap.

You’ll also love the soundtrack for this film. Lots of old standards, performed by Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and some really marvelous stuff by a very young Harry Connick Jr. Nora Ephron wrote the screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar for her outstanding work.

The DVD is great. It is in widescreen, Dolby stereo surround(2.0),the picture is beautiful with all the wonderful scenes of the changing seasons in New York, and the sound, including the music and the dialouge are pleasing. Some really nice Features are included, I very much enjoyed the “Making OF” Documentary with lots of commentary. You’ll also find lots of deleted scenes that are fun to watch, you can have Reiner’s commentary during the film, and There’s a terrific Harry Connick Jr video. There are trailers, and French and Spanish subtitles.
