One year after the success of the 1994 Australian film “The Adventures Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures joined to produce the 1995 American version, “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar”. Like the Australian film, which featured a trio of drag queens traveling across the rugged Australian outback from Sydney to the isolated resort of Alice Springs in a pink bus, the American version featured its own drag queen trio traveling from NYC to Los Angeles in an aging yellow Cadillac convertible; but the similarities end there. The drag queen trio featured in the American version was Miss Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes), Miss Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo). After Noxeema and Vida share the title of a drag queen contest, they invite (with Noxeema’s reluctance) Chi-Chi to join them to participate in a national contest in Los Angeles. Not having enough money for all three to fly to Los Angeles from NYC, Vida convinces them to instead use their winnings to purchase a car that all three could travel in. The film’s title comes from an autographed picture of Julie Newmar that Vida steals from a restaurant and places in the used yellow Cadillac convertible that the trio purchases. Similar to the Australian version, the car breaks down along the way, forcing the trio to stay a few days in a small, languishing town. There, they meet the town’s assorted residents that include hotel owner Carol Ann (Stockard Channing), her abusive husband Virgil (Arliss Howard), Beatrice (Blythe Danner), the polite Bobby Ray (Jason London), Merna (Melinda Dillon), Loretta (Beth Grant), the aging Clara (Alice Drummond) and restaurant owner Jimmy Joe (Mike Hodge) to name a few. They also meet law enforcement officer Sheriff Dollard (Chris Penn) who wants to arrest them.

Though arguably not as well made as “The Adventures Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” is still a very entertaining and engaging film that is sufficiently different from the former to not be redundant. Cameo appearances in the film include Julie Newmar, Robin Williams (as John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt), RuPaul (as Miss Rachel Tensions) and Naomi Campbell. Memorable scenes in the film include the restaurant, the used car lot, Vida seeing her mother (Margaret H. Flynn), Chi-Chi earning rites of passage, Sheriff Dollard, Noxeema’s interactions with townsfolk, the clothing store, the beauty parlor and the closing scenes. Patrick Swawye received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical, and John Leguizamo received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the Comedy/Musical. Sadly, Wesley Snipes did not receive a nomination for his excellent performance. Overall, I rate the film with 4 out of 5 stars. After watching the deleted scenes on the DVD, I concluded that they were best left deleted.

This was one of the most uplifting movies I’ve ever seen. After seeing the movie Seven, I went to see To Wong Foo and laugh from the beginning to the end. The outfits were just wonderful. I especially loved Patrick Swayze’s clothes. John Leguziamo was just sassy as Miss Chi Chi. Wesley Snipps had it going on as Noxema Jackson. I’ve seen this movie so many times I can recite the whole script. Director Beeban Kidron did an excellent job. Stockard Channing’s performance was excellent as Caroline. This is the perfect movie for depression. Im still hoping for a sequel. If it doesn’t happen, I will never get tired of re-watching To Wong Foo Thanks for everything Julie Newmar.

Having seen the movie multiple times, I was very disappointed with the production of this DVD. Scenes have been cut, for example, a mesmerizing nunchaku demonstration from the killer, and some bizarre editing happened: Tom Berenger is beat up by cops in the movie, and that was edited in the dvd, a stripper’s dog howls when killed by the psychopath, and that also doesn’t appear in the DVD. I am going to sell this ASAP, and buy the much better produced UK edition, which, strangely enough, features all the missing scenes.

I have seen this movie in VHS at least a dozen times, although I never remember seeing it in the theaters. It has a terrific cast, a good story, great strip scenes and awesome fight scenes. Something for everyone. I was so glad to see it in DVD, since my VHS copy had self-destructed.

What does the universe look like at the scale of atoms, or that of galaxy superclusters? What did the early universe look like, and how did it evolve into the cosmos we know today? What other life may have evolved and be wondering about our universe as we do?

These are deep questions, and no short film can possibly do them all complete justice. Instead, in its 35 minutes, Cosmic Voyage flies through a summary of what we know–just enough to whet your appetite for more.

Starting in Galileo’s Venice, with familiar everyday scales of time and space, the IMAX film employs a common technique: expanding our perspective by successive factors of 10, until the screen encompasses the largest structures scientists know of today, and our own Earth is utterly lost in the deep expanse. A similar voyage takes us from the waterways of the Netherlands down into the nucleus of the atom, where (somewhat paradoxically) our knowledge comes from some of the largest experiments in the world.

The simulation of the early universe and the numerous galactic collisions is especially awe-inspiring. Usually, documentaries of this sort employ artists to bring the words of astrophysics journals to life; Cosmic Voyage was the first movie to make use of scientific computing and cosmic simulations on such a large scale. The sequence was computed under the direction of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), which also had an early hand in popularizing the World Wide Web. The result is an accurate and breathtaking depiction of how the oldest and largest parts of cosmic architecture took shape.

The temptation with any such documentary is to compare it to Cosmos, the PBS documentary hosted by Carl Sagan that ran in 1980. But the comparison is unfair. Sagan had 13 hour-long episodes, with a sweep at once broader and deeper than anything since. With only 5 percent of the length, Cosmis Voyage can’t expect to duplicate that sweep, and to its credit, it doesn’t try. It just stuns you with its imagery and inspires you to find out more, and it does so without straying from scientific accuracy. Provided you keep in mind the length and scope of the film, you won’t be disappointed.

In this incredible journey the viewer travels from the outer reaches of space down into the nucleus of a carbon atom. Cosmic Voyage is able to explain, in layman’s terms, the theory of how the universe began - the “Big Bang” and how the entire mass of the universe could have been compressed into a space the size of a tennis ball. Parallel worlds? Life on other planets? Cosmic Voyage answers all these questions. Teachers will rate this film five stars and a must have for the classroom.

Movie Title: Easy Rider
Average customer review:

Easy Rider is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Easy Rider

“Easy Rider” directed by Dennis Hopper, produced by Peter Fonda and written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern was a low budget film ($340 grand) that surprisingly became a box office smash. The story is about two hippys (Fonda & Hopper) who buy choppers with cash they’ve gotten from a drug deal. They ride cross country heading to Louisianna (to Mardi Gras) and on their way meeting different people, visiting a commune of hippys, ending up in jail, going to a brothel, taking acid etc. The ending was disturbing in 1969 and still is, even in these days of non-stop violence in our country. This 35th Anniversary Edition is identical to the regular dvd version of “Easy Rider” with the exact same bonus material “The Making-Of Documentary “Easy Rider: Shaking The Cage” (feat. interviews with Fonda, Hopper, etc.) and an audio commentary by Dennis Hopper plus production notes. The bonuses for this 35th Anniversary Edition are a cd which includes eight songs (do not confuse this cd with the actual “Easy Rider Soundtrack” as it is not). The songs are “Born To Be Wild” - Steppenwolf, “The Weight” - Smith, “Nights In White Satin” - The Moody Blues, “Wasn’t Born To Follow” - The Byrds, “San Francisco Nights” - Eric Burden And The Animals, “The Pusher” - Steppenwolf, “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” - Roger McGuinn and “Get Together” - The Youngbloods. The 80 page book “Easy Rider” by Lee Hill is interesting and includes all you’ll ever want to know about the film. The bottom line is, if you already own the regular dvd of “Easy Rider” I’d pass on this 35th Anniversary Edition. Of course, if you don’t own this classic film it may be worth the extra cash for the bonus cd and book.

I bought this title because I am a motorcyclist. If you have never ridden one and want to know what it is like, this movie will take you on a virtual road trip from Los Angeles through beautiful mountain scenery down to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The two stars, Peter Fonda (Wyatt) and Dennis Hopper (Billy), head out on the highway to the motorcycle anthem, “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf, and there are some fantastic camera shots of them crossing the Colorado River. If that scene doesn’t get your blood pumping, then you can be assured that motorcycling isn’t for you.

There’s a lot more to this movie than just scenic motorcycling and sixties music. A typical biker movie has a weak plot, usually involving some gang terrorizing the local community. Before creating this movie, Fonda and Jack Nicholson (George), as well as some of the other cast members all appeared in such flicks. By contrast, “Easy Rider” is really a mold-breaker for its type, because it involves a lot of social commentary.

Early in the movie, Billy and Wyatt pick up a stranger along the highway, who turns out to be the leader of a commune. He is a dead ringer for John Lennon, when he had his Sgt. Pepper look. Wyatt and the stranger get along well, but Billy is suspicious of the hitchhiker. They take him back to his commune and hang out for awhile there with the people. Wyatt fits in OK, but Billy is not generally respected. Many of them make fun of Billy. For some time, this was very hard for me to account for, since Billy is a freak.

I did not gain any insights into this until I read the book, “Riders On the Storm” by Doors’ drummer, John Densmore. In it, he explains how the Doors, who were from Los Angeles, were not invited to play the Monterey Pop Festival. San Francisco flower power was about peace and love, and Jim Morrison, the lead singer, gave off an aggressive vibe. Densmore also said that some famous flower power musicians did not want to be publicly associated with The Doors. For instance, John Sebastian agreed to play harmonica on “Roadhouse Blues,” but he would not allow his real name to be used in the credits. I believe that the difference in values between Los Angeles and San Francisco is crucial to understanding why Billy was rejected by the commune members.

Wyatt and Billy are not from San Francisco, and they do not wear psychedelic clothing. They hail from Los Angeles, and they are preoccupied with freedom–not peace and love. Billy has a real aggressive vibe to him. He is very confrontational, and he doesn’t get along well with others. Wyatt is more of a seeker. He is open-minded and interested in what other people have to offer. They’re both rich, but not through legal or reputable means. They smuggled some cocaine across the border from Baja, Mexico, and then they sold it for a huge profit. The two are friends, and they seem to have accepted each others strengths and weaknesses.

The movie makes some clear statements about sixties social values and morals. In other cases, it brings up issues, but doesn’t reach any firm conclusions. The movie ends tragically, but it isn’t an indictment of flower power. Billy had rejected peace and love, and had he not reacted in the confrontational manner that he did, things might have turned out differently. This movie is about the tradgedy and failure of hate–and the need for peace, love, and understanding. I give this movie a five-star rating because it documents the issues of the times so effectively. As a motorcycle movie, this production is practically unbeatable because it has captured the spirit of motorcycling so well.

I bought this DVD for my anatomy class, as I am not fond of lecturing over the nervous system…I thought it would help give them an overview before I lectured. It was okay, but not great. It definately didn’t overload them with information; all it really did was cover the very basics…a little more detail would have been better. This video would probably be best suited for middle school anatomy, not college-age.

Received product in a timely manner and am extremely satisfied with the quality of this product and its information.

Although little known today, in her own era author Fannie Hurst was among America’s most famous authors, a writer who frequently challenged the status quo in both her life and her literature. Among her most popular works was the novel IMITATION OF LIFE, which first came to the screen starring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers in 1934. Today both the novel and film would be considered somewhat racist–but at the time both were considered social shockers, dealing frankly with single mothers, rebellious daughters, and racial issues in a way that few novels and fewer still films of the era dared.

The first film version was as faithful to the novel as it dared be, telling the story of two single mothers–one black, one white–who join forces and hit the big time when the white woman successfully markets the black woman’s pancake recipe. But the 1959 film version substituted pancake make-up for pancake batter: the white woman is an actress, and with her black friend behind her she climbs the ladder to Broadway stardom. Director Douglas Sirk was reknowned for his ability with this sort of material, and although he did better films IMITATION OF LIFE is perhaps his most obvious stylistic statement: gallons of gloss, more soap suds than a sink full of dishes, and enough vulgar melodrama to fuel a thousand 1950s schoolgirl dreams.

This time around our stars are Lana Turner and Juanita Moore, supported by Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner as the respective and rebellious daughters who make their mothers lives a living hell, with Lana’s daughter Sandra falling in love with her mother’s beau and Juanita’s daughter Susan determined to defeat the racist society in which she lives by passing for white. All four actresses give it everything they’ve got, which means they all emote to the nth degree as they suffer through every emotional upheaval the screenwriters can devise.

Turner and Dee are essentially Turner and Dee. The real surprises here are Moore and Kohner. Saddled with a story that still keeps the black woman in the kitchen while the white woman plays, Moore nonetheless gives an outstanding and ultimately heartbreaking performance, and Kohner matches her every bit of the way as the wayward daughter who makes one bad choice after another in her refusal to knuckle under to a repressive society. It is a tremendous pity that neither actress went on to equally high-profile roles and films, but the times were against them–as the very nature of the film’s story should make abundantly clear.

The original novel and film were actually advanced for their time, but by the time this version hit the screen the “white lady upstairs and the black lady downstairs” was hardly a rung up the ladder. Even in 1959 many denounced the film as perpetuating racial stereotypes and class-thinking, and by today’s standards it is alternately distasteful and absurd. But oddly enough, that fact doesn’t undercut the incredible watchablity of the film. We may sneer at some of the values it presents, but it holds our attention all the way, and you’ll need at least three hankies for the film’s conclusion. If you are torn between purchasing the DVD or a VHS version, you should know that there is actually little difference between the two. The film has not been restored for DVD, and the lack of restoration is quite noticeable; moreover, the only bonus material on the DVD is the theatrical trailer. You might prefer to go with a low cost VHS until a really good DVD is released.

Imitation of Life is a movie that had perfect timing in the changing world of 1950’s Americana.

The oppression of legal segregation had taken its toll and a prime example of this burnout is Susan Kohner’s Sara Jane. This character had the perfect mother, but society told Sara Jane at a very young age that her mother would NEVER be good enough because of her black skin color. Sara Jane chafes at the limitations society places on her. She doesn’t want to be associated with maids, chauffeurs or going through back doors. She wants more, and as a `white woman’ she can get it. Many viewers who watch this film will be angry at Sara Jane, however, one must remember that ‘black’ was not yet beautiful, and this is the pre-civil rights era.

Lana Turner’s Laura Meredith asks Sara Jane, `have I ever treated you differently?’ The movie makes this answer abundantly clear although Sara Jane answers `no.’ The audience sees Turner’s pigeonholing of Sara Jane and Annie. Even after years of living together - she actually says to Annie, `I didn’t know that you had any friends.’

Laura Meredith is a character that represents society as a whole in this film. She is the accepted race and therefore, pleasantly clueless about matters that doesn’t affect her, while aiming for and achieving her dreams. Through the passage of time Laura becomes rich, successful, and a star - and for Annie, well, she remains the maid.

The DVD of this movie is extremely poor. The transfer is down right dirty in one scene and grainy throughout the film. There is one scene where Sara Jane is running down the stairs and she freezes in action. Universal didn’t even care enough about the viewer to put this common play-pause in a point where it would be seamless. This is a classic film that has been given anything but classic attention - extremely sloppy work from Universal.

The 2005 season of the new & improved Dr. Who, includes the Doctor’s return to Earth, only to find that he’s returned his companion, Rose, home 12 months late! And there’s this whole invasion of Earth thing going on too. Super effects worthy of a theater release, like a spaceship clipping Big Ben and landing in the Thames! Also a nice mix of CGI and live-action FX.

Included on this set, the return of the Daleks, or the last remaining Dalek, trapped on Earth in a wealthy alien collector’s underground bunker. In this amazing revamping of the Daleks, little is changed, but the fear-factor of those pepper-shaking dudes goes off the chart!!

This is not really a review of this particular DVD, but of the entire Doctor Who phenomenon. (But I did have my reasons for placing this review here.)

“Doctor Who” is often regarded as the world’s longest running TV production, hardly surprising since it aired for 26 seasons from 1963 to 1989. A new version began airing in 2005. The series is British and due to its longevity, many Brits quite literally grew up with it. Not having the questionable benefit of living in Liverpool or Leeds, I didn’t. However, I’ve seen some of the classic serials from the 1970’s plus the entire “Ninth Doctor” from 2005. The DVD on this product page includes three episodes of the “Ninth Doctor”, including my favorite episode “Dalek”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who - The Complete First Season, Vol. 2! Click Here

I’m not sure if an American can ever grok “Doctor Who”. The series is quite unlike anything you’ve seen before. Forget about Star Trek, Star Wars and PLEASE forget Close Encounters of the Third Kind! “Doctor Who” is to scary for small children, but too childish for teenagers and adults. I never quite understood whose supposed to be watching it. 12-year old boys? Well, at least it appeals to the 12-year old inside me, LOL. And it seems everyone in Britain is still watching. Indeed, the series became so popular there that a crazy pop band sampled the theme melody, re-mixed it with Gary Glitter, and made it to the top of the British charts! (The Timelords, Doctorin’ the Tardis. You can watch it at Youtube. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

The plot of “Doctor Who” is actually quite simple. The main character is a mysterious, human-like space alien, simply called The Doctor. He has the ability to shape-shift, which makes it possible for the producers to change the lead actor on a semi-regular basis, thus contributing to the series’ longevity. The Doctor roams the universe in a curious time machine, known as the TARDIS, a time machine disguised as a phone boot! He always has at least one human companion, sometimes two. The Doctor’s main enemies are two races of sentient and evil space robots, the Daleks and the Cybermen. However, he also encounters everything from body-snatchers to mad scientists.

The “Ninth Doctor” series (of which this DVD is a part) is somewhat different from the classical series. The main concept is still the same, but the series have become more “politically corrrect”. I can already hear the critics scream “Damn liberals”. The Doctor’s companions includes a White underclass girl, her Black boyfriend and a bisexual conman with a penchant for fashionwear. Including an overtly bisexual character must have been controversial, especially since he has lines such as: “I remember the last time I was sentenced to die. I don’t remember much after that, until I woke up in bed with the two executioners. Really nice couple. We still keep in touch”. (WHAT???) The series also includes covert criticism of the war in Iraq, and one episode showing Trotskyist posters! Personally, I find all this quite funny and didn’t really mind.

In order to get the entire “Ninth Doctor”, you unfortunately have to buy all volumes of “Doctor Who, The Complete First Season”. This DVD only contains three episodes, including, as I already mentioned, “Dalek”, my favorite episode and the only one that’s even remotely serious. But be warned! If you buy this DVD, or ANY “Doctor Who” DVD, you might get so infatuated that you’ll never stop…

There’s some not-so-pleasant changes in store for the little town of Eureka.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eureka: Season 3.0! Click Here

“Eureka Season 3.0″ (meaning the first half of the third season a la “Battlestar Galactica”) provides plenty of those, which adds some new tension to geniustown (including some rather shocking cast changes and a new “love-to-hate” person). It’s kind of disconcerting to only have eight episodes, but they have the signature mixture of warm comedy and intriguing sci-fi mystery.

Among the changes in store: Alison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Nathan (Ed Quinn) contemplate remarriage, and Henry is in jail. And the DOD sends in a corporate “fixer” named Eva Thorne (Frances Fisher) arrives to cut the deadwood from Global Dynamics. But then an anti-missile VIPER drone goes AWOL during a flight test and starts threatening Eureka, while Thorne decides to embed herself in Global Dynamics as one of the new bosses.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eureka: Season 3.0! Click Here

And while Eva ruthlessly makes GD “profitable,” the usual sci-fi disasters crop up. Carter has to deal with bizarre transformations in a sealed biosphere, a wedding-day timeloop, exploding biomemetic dogs, an impossible volcano brewing under Eureka (and which sprays gross fluids on people), an inept spandex-wearing “Captain Eureka,” a mayoral election heated up by an artificial supernova, and a swarm of ancient Egyptian insects.

In the meantime, Thorne is snooping around Eureka in search of something. Her quest leads to the discovery of a vast military base, and some bodies dead since 1939 — and a bizarre substance that threatens Zoe’s life after she slips and falls in it.

Apparently the once all-important Artifact is yesterday’s business, because the dark subplot of “Eureka Season 3.0″ is the mystery prewar bunker and whatever Thorne wants destroyed. It adds a nice undercurrent of conspiracy and tension to this season, though the focus is always first and foremost on our Everyman Sheriff, and how he tries to deal with the Horrific World-Ending Scientific Crisis of the day.

That’s a nice balance, because the rest of the season flows in a river of gentle humor and extreme scientific problems. Plenty of weird inventions (cloud sculpting, flying rabbits and robot pooches), fun tongue-in-cheek dialogue (”They killed the infected and burned the city to the ground.” “Let’s call that Plan B”), and hilarious comedic moments. And Carter’s always in the middle of it, trying to unravel a way to fix things.

But it’s worth noting that while the Disasters Du Jour and the bunker plots are dealt with by the eighth episode, the half season ends with a cliffhanger for one character. Just sayin’.

Ferguson does a brilliant job as Carter, the down-to-earth Everycop who just wants to do his job (”It’s all fun and games until someone gets cursed”). But Carter has some new problems in this season — his new-agey, pregnant sister moves in with him, and Zoe continues to spread her wings with a job and boyfriend. Erica Cerra’s Jo experiences some relationship woes, while Richardson-Whitfield’s Alison is put in the position of being pretty powerless. Sadly, a longtime cast member also exits the scene early on.

This season also sees the return of Henry, whose skills turn out to be too invaluable for him to rot in prison — and he even gets a new job on top of his old one. And Fisher turns out to be a great addition: she initially makes a great steely-eyed corporate dictator, but the facade cracks as time goes on, and we get to see that she’s haunted by something terrible in the past.

“Eureka Season 3.0″ is way too short (new episodes coming in July), but it still has the fresh mix of out-there sci-fi and small-town comedy. Definitely still worth the seeing.

Due to the writers’ strike two years ago, all scripted shows were unfortunately shortened, resulting in seasons where it was months between new episodes. For some shows, the wait was too long and some were eventually cancelled due to poor ratings.

Luckily, for fans of Eureka, the creators simply split the season into two parts; an eight episode arc, which aired last July, and the second one, which premieres this July. The result is a longer season spread over two years, much like Battlestar Galactica. Some may call the upcoming episodes Season Four, but it’s technically the second half of Season 3.

In any event, the first half of Season 3 is now out on DVD, just in time for the premiere of the remaining season. And while short on episodes, the show was at the top of it’s game this season. I don’t know about you, but to me this show is like comfort food. I love the characters and I love the world they inhabit. A perfect cast led by Colin Ferguson get the most out of the sometimes unbelievable situations. I won’t go into the whole story arc, suffice to say that there is a new arrival in Eureka, who harbors a big secret about the town’s past. And as the saying goes, out with old and in with the new, as SPOILER ALERT! a regular cast member departs midway through.

So while it might be frustrating to only have eight episodes here (and I watched all of them in one afternoon!), I personally prefer quality over quantity. My only grief with this set is a lack of an episode guide. That, and it would have been great to have the musical promo they did before the first episode last year! It was terrific and it’s kind of a tease that they mention it in the music featurette and show a clip of it too, but not the whole thing. That’s only a small complaint, because really the episodes are what it’s all about and I absolutely recommend picking this up!

I just want to add my voice to the other reviewers who praise Promises. Their descriptions will give you a good idea about the films contents so I’ll just say, this is a very moving and informative film. Most of my reviews are from the stand-point of a middle school teacher looking for materials to use in my class. This film is outstanding! It’s the type of lesson you’ll be excited to teach. If you are looking for something to use to explore and learn about Israel and Palestinian relations buy this DVD. I thought the length of the DVD would lose my students. I was wrong– they stayed engaged through the whole film (about 3 class periods).

If you believe in your heart that, despite every hurdle, peace is possible between the Israelis and Palestinians, this film will fill you with hope and wonder. That’s not to say it’s rosy - the children depicted in the film often exhibit anger and intolerance, but the mere act of recognition between the children of these two warring groups is enough to inspire faith in their futures. This film is a beautiful document of a precious, brave and tenuous experiment on the part of the filmmakers.
