The PBS documentary “Looking for Lincoln” which aired on the eve of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday is a thoughtful look into the legend of our 16th president. As another reviewer stated this documentary is not a typical biography about Lincoln’s life and career, rather it is an examination of how his life and career has been shaped into the secular American icon in the years after his assassination in 1865. Hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. we are shown interviews with Lincoln scholars, civil rights activists, politicians and every day Americans who give us their own personal interpretations of a man deeply shrouded in myth.

While the documentary is somewhat delicate in its interpretation of Lincoln it does not shy away from describing him as a man firmly rooted in the prejudices of his era. His early beliefs about the inferiority of African Americans in no way gels with the Great Emancipator image that grew up around him. But a man renowned for his great resolve in restoring the Union proved he could adapt his views. It is in his authorship of the Emancipation Proclamation (which has been argued was more political than practical) to his support of the 13th Amendment where the light of greatness begins to shine in him. Frederick Douglass an early critic of Lincoln who once described him as “the white man’s president,” would later write in his memoirs that, “Mr. Lincoln was not only a great president, but a great man - too great to be small in anything.”

The best thing I can say about “Looking for Lincoln” is that it stimulates discussion about Lincoln’s legacy. One of the reasons I believe Lincoln is so popular in our culture is that he came from humble origins and rose up through hard work and ambition to attain the pinnacle of power. And through all that he still indulged in the whims of his children and loved a good joke. In that view we can see ourselves mirrored in the image of Lincoln. Love him or hate him this documentary is worth a couple hours of your time. It may not change the way you feel about him but it may help you understand WHY you feel the way you do.

The book, Looking for Lincoln, is fascinating. But Henry Louis Gates’s pseudo-intellectual show that’s an attempt to cash in on the book is lowbrow at best. It might have been charming if it had been written and hosted by a sixth-grader, but Gates presenting himself as though he were a sixth-grader is a waste of our time and money. The comments made by the historians are worthwhile, but read their books instead of wasting your money on this nonsense.

I generally don’t cry at movies. I love any movie that can move me enough to shed a tear or two. Grave Of the Fireflies is not one of those movies. In those movies even though I’m sad the final scenes leave me with a residual hope that while some tragic event has just occured the charecters involved will grow and live better. Grave of the Fireflies doesn’t do this. There is no hope or possiabilty of things getting better. This is Life at it’s cruelest. Life that will never get better. This movie doesn’t move you, it shatters you.

Seita And Setsuko (the boy and His little sister) aren’t Heros and their abusive aunt isn’t the villian. Neither for that matter is either side of the war protrayed as good or bad in these movie. This is just a story of people being people. some kind, some indiffrent and some compleatly harsh. Seita makes mistakes that many children in his position would.

Although fifteen years old this film is still very beatiful. The images it portrays are quiet and subdued yet elegent. The final scene is something that shall forever be burned into my brain. It’s touching and heartwrenching finality should break most people.

Well I love Grave of the Fireflies. I Love it for it’s unflinching look at war and life, It’s graceful bueaty as it portrays a young girl playing amidst Fireflies, and for what it does to me at the end.

Why must fireflies die so young?

“Grave of the Fireflies” (”Hotaru no haka”) is one of the most powerful anti-war films I have ever seen, which means that it has no competition when it comes to emotional impact in terms of animated films. The death of Bambi’s mother was a traumatic shock, but nothing like the sense of despair and grief that overwhelms you by the end of this film. The film begins with the spirit of a young boy showing us his death in a train station, after which we follow the fireflies into the past to see his story. At the beginning of the original movie of “Brian’s Song” we were told: “All true stories end in death. This is a true story.” So is “Grave of the Fireflies” because I have no problem granting the legitimacy of “truth” to fiction.

In the last months of World War II an American fire bomb raid destroys the port city of Kobe, where almost all of the buildings are made of wood. Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi/J. Robert Spencer) is a 14-year old boy who survives along with his 4-year old sister Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi/Rhoda Chrosite). They were separated from their mother during the raid, which spares them from her fate. Their father is a navy officer serving in the Imperial Navy at sea, and the two kids go off to live with an aunt. With both his school and the war factory where we worked gone, Seita does not know what to do. So he tries to take care of his sister. But his aunt constantly berates him and after trading his mother’s kimonos for rice that she stingly shares with the children, Seita decides to take Setsuko and live in a couple of caves dug for bomb shelters. For a while their live remains idyllic, but then there is nothing left to trade for food, and no food to be bought for money. Seita has to steal food to survive while Setsuko is getting weaker and weaker from hunger.

This film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel written by Akiyuki Nosaka, which won the Naoli Prize, the Japanese equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Like Seita, he survived the fire bombing with a younger sister, who died in his care. Obviously the story stems from a sense of guilty and I believe telling this story was confessional rather than cathartic for Nosaka. Writer-director Isao Takahata turns this tragedy into what can only be described as a poetic experience, achieving a cinematic lyricism that could never have been accomplished in a live-action film (e.g., the way the fireflies have a counterpoint in the pieces of ash that drift on the wind after the fire bombings). There is a quietness to this film, a sense of contemplation that emphasizes important and small moments alike, and makes scenes linger as the heart-rending story plays out to its fatal conclusion. The voice work by both of the young girls playing Setsuko is extremely effective; I have a slight preference for that done by Ayano Shiriashi simply because it is much more naturalistic than what you usually find in anime depicting children.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grave of the Fireflies! Click Here

“Graves of the Fireflies” is an unforgettable film, one which will reduce most viewers to tears if not outright sobbing. Watching it is a painful experience, but then a film depicting the horrors of war and showing what happens to young children is supposed to have that effect. Viewing it a second time makes the experience even more intense (you probably will not catch what Setsuko’s last words are the first time through, but be prepared for what it will do to you when you watch the film again). You will never, ever forget this film and you should be very, very careful about showing it to younger children, because it will change forever what they think about animated films. It will do that for you as well.

This is a great collection of 3 DVDs that covers Bob’s television career from 1950 through his final special in 1995. The guest list is a virtual “who’s who” of all the big television and movie stars of the period, and given the five decades it covers it really becomes a virtual history of television. Bob is terrific, and the quality of the remastering and packaging is top notch. Made a great gift for my WWII veteran Dad.

First off, the “remastering” here is deplorable. Five off the rack Bob Hope retrospectives dating from the ’60s through the ’90’s. No attempt to return to the source material and clean it up. Also, the packaging seems to suggest an elaborate anthology especially prepared for this DVD release (timed to coincide with Hope’s 100th birthday). Not the case. A major disappointment truly unworthy of its subject, the great Bob Hope.

Most people who come into this most recent Guyver series, has probably been witness to the glory of the classic Guyver ovas and movies from the early 90s. Though, nothing made has really caught up with the original manga. All 3 guyver movies had mostly conclusions in them, but only the OAV movie even resembled the manga at all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Guyver -The Bioboosted Armor: Complete Box Set! Click Here

Well here comes the new series, hoping either to catch up or even conclude the guyver series. Though….does it succeed? Kindof, but not really. As of now, there are 26 manga books out for the guyver, and this series only goes up to the 10th. Anybody who has watched the original series from the 90s will figure out, this series doesn’t go much farther than it honestly. While yes sure, this does very much so follow the manga, but thats ultimately its downfall as well. Think of a normal shonen like a dbz, sailor moon, or inuyasha where you can just about predict everything. If a battle can’t be won, some new technique has to be used. There just really isn’t a sense of emotion or a connection. Though if you watch the original series, everything just seemed to blend in. It felt more like a Berserk or Ninja scroll than dragonball. Not saying its bad this way, its just never really exciting.

Which mentioning more comparisons to dragonball, this series has a dramatic loss in gore. The oav and the ovas were some of the most gory animation you could ever watch. Arms flying off left and right, a few snipits of nudity, and some mild cussing. Though, this is toned down for more of a early teenage audience. Of course, its not pokemon or anything, but you’ll deffinately notice the difference. Its almost bothersome actually.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Guyver -The Bioboosted Armor: Complete Box Set! Click Here

Though, here comes the most bothersome thing about this set. Be prepared to turn on the japanese audio, even if you HATE subs. Yes, I do like english dubs for the most part. Though, this is PATHETIC! Just go search up the next episode previews for instance. The actor sounds BORED TO DEATH! Though ADV originally produced this anime, and they are notorious for bad dubs but nothing this bad. If only funimation went back and redubbed the whole series…

Keeping in line with audio though, the music. Well, its kindof dissapointing. The opening song Waiting for.. isn’t too bad, although the singer sounds a bit bored. Though the ending song, is HORRIBLE! Its something you would think to have in a inuyasha. Anybody who remotely knows guyver should know, it doesn’t focus on any big love storys. Sure, there is one, but it doesn’t force it on you. Well, the background music is ultimately a disaster. Every anime now seems to have to have a big orchestra. Think of something like Rocky, where theres a big build up and then it hits you hard emotionally. The original series, oav movie, and guyver 2 did a great job doing that. Though…this series always tries to have real heavy ballad music, but it ultimately makes you not care about it at all.

So ultimately, I’d give this a rental or a borrow. Its certainly worth 1 or 2 viewings for the story alone, but not worth keeping in your collection. Its certainly not the worst thing out there, its just compared to anything guyver related before it, its disappointing.

This latest version of Guyver is truely a MAGNIFICANT work of anime. I enjoyed the revision of the story line. It does answer alot of questions I had before, but now my questions have been answered and explained somethings that I missed. The main music theme for The Guyver, Waiting For… by Yo Reiri, is HOT. I loved this song so much that I actually bought the soundtrack and play this song at least four times daily. But I wish the Japanesse writers would continue this version with an conclusional ending. I think its kind of crude to remake the Guyver, each time, only to add more details about the characters lives and not come forth with an ending. I have been a FAN of anime since 1990 and love every year of it, but recently each anime have been increasingly known to stop without a conclusion. Its beginning to get irritating. Although irritated, I will always LOVE anime and The Guyver.

*sigh* Where to begin? When Interview with the Vampire (the movie) came out when I was in sixth grade, I was immediately hooked, and I devoured the original 4 Vampire Chronicle books one after the other. I fell in love with Lestat, I felt Louis’ pain…it was wonderful. When I heard they were making a movie version of Queen of the Damned, I was glad, yet surprised, because The Vampire Lestat (book 2) is actually my favorite of the series, and I would have liked to have seen that as a movie. Now begins my rant.
There’s plenty of things I could say about this movie doing no justice to the feel and/or deep and layered plot of the book. However, since it is a movie and not the book, I’ll try not to get that specific (i.e., Marius didn’t make Lestat, but that doesn’t make that much of a difference…does it?) What really [ticked] me off about this is that instead of taking one book’s plot and trying to fully develop and explain the story, they shoved a bunch of [junk] into ninety minutes and made it loud, shiny, and polished. And let’s not forget the kung fu.
1) I loved Tom Cruise as Lestat, but…Stuart Townsend was hot. I’ll admit it. He played the modern Lestat quite well, and I’m willing to say that his hair is *dark* blond. That doesn’t quite make up for his brown eyes, however. :)
2) Aaliyah. Not bad; she certainly looked pretty, but what was up with that stupid Hungarian accent? And she had basically no character development, which brings me to
3) NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! The only reason I recognized half of the “ancients” in the movie was by their costumes, because God forbid we should actually mention their names!!
4) Why did we have to have that stupid “romance” [stuff]? Can’t we just accept Lestat as being androgynous/bisexual and not give him a little teenybopper girlfriend?
5) This wasn’t even good as a plain old “vampire” movie. They used the same crap we’ve seen hundreds of times before. “This is how you become a vampire. This is what you do as a vampire. I love you, but you’re a mortal. No, I cannot bring you into my world. Well, now that you’re dying, I guess I can.” And so on.
6) The soundtrack is rather well done.

So in closing, PLEASE, I implore you, do not base your like/dislike of the Vampire Chronicle BOOKS on seeing this one film. As another reviewer said, READ THEM. READ THEM NOW. They are fascinating. They are better than this movie. This movie is pretty. But it is not good.

I think people went into this movie thinking that they would hate it. Especially some fans. I’m an Anne Rice fan and I’ll say this: it doesn’t follow the book completely, but I liked it quite a bit.

To sum it up, Queen of the Damned is actually made up of the second and third books of the Vampire Chronicals consisting of chunks from both Queen of the Damned and The Vampire Lestat. It may be called Queen of the Damned, and the posters focus on Akasha, but it really is about Lestat (which is what Queen was about anyway.)

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this movie, but went into it with an open mind. I liked Interview, but didn’t care for the choice of Tom (over the top) Cruise as Lestat. The choice of Stewart Townsend was WELL casted as he slithers about reeking of sexuality, just like Lestat; too bad he wasn’t the original choice for Interview.

In terms of the storyline, to incorporate or base a movie on both books is a difficult task that can fail and unfortunately, it did in some areas. From reading the negative reviews about QOTD, too much was incorporated into the storyline without explaining the background of each (i.e., Akasha is the first of the vampire bloodline and when her life ceases to exist, so do all the vampires created beneath her.) Stuff like this is never explained and anyone who has never read the books can understandably be confused.

I was more excited by seeing the characters I became so familiar with come to life, but we are only focusing on specific characters in this flick. Namely, Akasha, Marius, Lestat, Jesse and Maharet. All the others are present, but most of them don’t even have a single line. Vampires such as Mael, Armand and Pandora are present, but have such a small screen presence that it is disappointing considering they had larger roles in the books. Also, the movie is heavily edited. In the beginning, when Lestat comes across the band “Satan’s Night Out” the shots go immediately from “You’re a Vampire? LOL!” to “Are you going to kill us?” Obviously there was a chunk of conversation cut out from them to laugh at him and then be frightened of him — it’s illogical. These are probably going to be on the DVD later. Methinks they should have obviously done two movies and both books, but the “need” for bang-em-up scenes led to skipping the second book and doing the third. Somewhat disappointing there as I feel the storyline suffered.

The storyline is choppy, but the visuals are just stunning. We’re not talking Matrix-like effects of jumping and such, but imagery, setting the tone of the movie, sets and glowing eyes… I really felt like I was seeing the world of vampires through theirs. It reminded me of a really good Goth video and I found myself really pulled in. On another note, if you’re into heavier Korn-type music you will definitely get a blast out of the soundtrack.

All in all, I was really pleased with this. I went into this movie knowing that to capture the whole storyline would be impossible and understanding that artistic licenses would be taken. With that in mind, any fan with this attitude would enjoy this movie for the creation it’s become. Give it a shot — you might be surprised how much you like it.

The movie is a very good christmas movie,
and deserves a 5. I wish they made more movies like this.
The movie is about carface a greety dog who steels this little puppy’s money for his broken leg. Then Charlie, itchy, and sasha
make a plan to show carface what will happen to him in the past and in the future. It’s a christmas carol movie, in a dog version. See the movie. It’s very entertaining.

This is one of the best animated versions of “A Christmas Carol” available, in my opinion, but not because of its fidelity to the novel by Charles Dickens. Although it borrows enough elements from the Dickens classic to be recognizable as a version of that popular Christmas story, it also has elements more reminiscent of an episode of “Batman and Robin,” or “The Wizard of Oz.” The plots and sub-plots are complex, and the characters well developed. The graphics are better than those in most animated versions, too. I would recommend this version to people unfamiliar with “A Christmas Carol” as a family-oriented Christmas movie that stands on its own merits, as well as to people, like me, who collect as many different versions of “A Christmas Carol” as they can!

When Universal started putting out the classic monsters on DVD this fall, I just knew I’d have to wait a long time for the underappreciated Wolf Man. But no! On the heels of the OUTSTANDING discs of Frankenstein, The Bride & The Mummy comes another first-class offering. Like the others, THE WOLF MAN contains an excellent documentary as well as the trailer and a commentary track by a film historian. The print of the film is gorgeous. I don’t care what your age is or when you first saw this amazing film, if you’re a horror fan you simply must own this one.

Firstly, apologies for the corny title of my review. Now the DVD. Universal has pulled out all the stops for its Classic Monster Collection DVDs and ‘The Wolf Man’ is a contender for best of the series. The DVD boasts several special features including an informative documentary, cast/crew notes and trailer. In keeping with the other Classic Monster DVDs, the real bonus is the incredible picture quality. Not just better than VHS, not just better than a revival cinema print, this print is better than I ever recall seeing on TV! ‘The Wolf Man’ also features the best commentary of any of these Universal DVDs. Tom Weaver provides an exceptional degree of insight into the movie in a very fast but conversational manner - you’ll need to listen to the commentary more than once in order to gain full benefit. Like all good ‘horrors’ the emphasis is on suspense and mystery, not mindless gore. In fact, the image of Lon Chaney Jr in full werewolf make-up could easily overshadow the fact that this is also a superb psychological thriller - until you watch the DVD. This impressive package is an essential purchase for all vintage horror fans. When Leonard Maltin describes ‘The Wolf Man’ as ‘one of the finest horror films ever made’ you know you’re not going to be disappointed!

Repo Man Movie Streaming

Repo Man Movie Streaming. Repo Man Movie Streaming.

Movie Title: Repo Man
Average customer review:

Repo Man is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Repo Man

Repo Man is completely unclassifiable. Funny, dark, biting, thrilling, confusing, action, adventure, it’s all there. Emilio Estevez plays Otto, a “white suburban punk” living in LA’s sprawl, with a nowhere job that he loses in the film’s second scene. When his hippie parents admit they sent his college fund to a TV preacher (We’re sending Bibles to El Salvador!), Otto meets Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a cocaine-driven Repo Man who needs an extra driver. Otto joins the firm and soon learns the Repo Code; Bud’s version (You see, a Repo Man gets himself INTO tense situations), and the other regulars at Helping Hand Auto share their philosophies too. Light finds Bud’s view tedious but is willing to handle shoot-outs when he’s not reading parodies of Scientology (Diuretix), Miller seems completely neuron-fried (The more you drive, the less intelligent you are), and Oly is along to make a four-pack. (Did you notice the four experienced Repo Men are named after beers?) Let’s go get a drink, kid!

Multiple plot strands at first seem unrelated, but bind together closer and tighter as the film moves along. Otto and the other Repo Men are on the lookout for a 1964 Chevy Malibu, with a $25,000 bounty. So are some creepy FBI agents, who stalk and kidnap Otto. And so are Helping Hand’s arch-rivals, who careen into the plot whenever things are getting dull. The car’s driven by a nuclear physicist in from Los Alamos, who warned a CHP officer not to look in the trunk (with deadly results). Otto’s punk friends find the car while breaking into a pharmaceutical factory, but they’re too stupid to keep it. (These three are some of the dumbest criminals ever shown in film, including Kevin Kline’s Otto in _A Fish Called Wanda_) Otto finds love, after a fashion, but since this is Reaganesque LA, even his girlfriend has her own motives. (”Otto! What about our relationship?” Otto’s reply is a brilliant retort to Cary Grant’s last line in Gone with the Wind.)

The film abounds with hilarious throw-away lines, signs, and labels. Several scenes take place in food stores, and all the food is generically labeled. Multiple viewings are required to catch them all; be sure to read all the signs in the windows. Even the TV preacher shows up on several television sets. Repo Man takes its structure from Miller’s bizarre rant about the cosmic latticework of interconnectedness, because everything is interconnected, and Miller turns out to be right about all of it by the end. “And flying saucers are… You got it. Time Machines.”

Top it off with a TERRIFIC sound track by Iggy Pop, Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, and a host of others from the punk scene and this is one of the best movies ever made.

Every decade, there seems to be a movie that defines the angst of the culture and the subculture, the collective feeling that something is wrong with the establishment. To call this zeitgeist is misleading; these films don’t reflect the spirit of the times as much as they somehow tap into the opposite - they manage to create an all-around sense of unease about the state of the world. In the 1960s, it was The Graduate and the bombshell look at the end. For the 1990s, Fight Club identified many things wrong both with pop culture and those acting in rebellion against it. For the Reagan-saturated 1980s, the distinction falls squarely on Alex Cox’s debut film Repo Man. In one of his first roles, Emilio Estevez plays Otto, a street punk who loses his job and college savings in the same day due to misunderstandings and television preachers. At the end of his rope financially and mentally, he agrees to make a quick 20 bucks by helping experienced repo man Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). Realizing the potential to make a good living, and an “intense” life in his new job, Otto signs up with the crew and becomes a repo man. On the way, he meets an unusual woman (Olivia Barash) whom he rapidly falls in lust with. When word comes down the wire that there’s an enormous commission out on a 1964 Chevy Malibu, Otto and all the other repo men set out to look for the car with the huge score. What they find in the trunk is so unusual, it will change everything - EVERYTHING.

What makes Repo Man so unique is the obvious satirization not only of regular, and in this case conservative Reagean-esque, culture, from the “John Wayne was [gay]” speech to Bud’s trashing of Russia, but the send-ups of punk culture (Let’s go do some crimes! Yeah, let’s get sushi and not pay!) Otto is the everyman in every sense of the word, as he - like us - realizes that no matter what culture he tries to be a part of, he never fits in, and those strains of culture are so rife with stupidity and hypocrisy that he no longer wants to belong. Like The Graduate and Fight Club, Repo Man also refuses to supply a stock answer, instead making the audience question instead of spoonfeeding them. Plus, it’s roll-on-the-floor funny, with some of the best oneliners since Evil Dead 2 or Terminator 2. Alex Cox made Repo Man while still in film school, and he basically admits it’s little more than a trumped-up student film. The lack of budget is obvious at times, but the killer screenplay and direction more than make up for that slight fault. As usual, the movie looks excellent on Anchor Bay’s DVD; the sound and video are as clear as you can ask for, with a remixed 5.1 audio track to boot. There’s a great commentary track with Alex Cox, some castmembers (sadly, no Harry Dean or Emilio), and some crew; it’s a lot like a Kevin Smith commentary, with everyone sitting in one room, having a great time talking about a great film. There are no other extras to speak of, unless you buy the collector’s tin (which does not look like the normal Repo Man cover - it looks like a California license plate, with Repo Man on it). The collector’s tin has the soundtrack on CD and a booklet about the movie with a little comic in it. Unless you are a major fan or must have the best of the best of the best edition, there’s no need to buy the more expensive version, but if you want it, you’d better get it quick, because at 30,000 copies, it’ll be gone before you know it.

I would definitely check this movie out if you can, and would recommend buying it to anyone who asked.
