br Nostalgic send-up of Bogart detective films of the ’40s boasts a spot-on impression of the famous star by Robert Sacchi, who made a career doing mostly the same. (That’s him in the Robert Zemeckis-helmed “You, Murderer” episode from ITales from the Crypt/I). The premise is that Sacchi plays a retired cop who gets plastic surgery to make himself look like Bogart, and then sets up shop as a private dick named Sam Marlow. But the plot is really just an excuse to pay tribute to Bogart’s detective films. Sacchi’s channeling of Bogie is so uncanny you’ll be positively mesmerized for about 30 minutes. And that’s the problem. While this amiable pastiche might help while away the evening in nostalgic reverie, it does a major disservice to the films it appears to idolize. That’s the problem with nostalgia: it usually jettisons all the depth and complexity of the original, leaving an indistinct fifth-generation clone, a fuzzy Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox. So when the novelty of the flick begins to wane, there’s only the plot to fall back on for interest. And the plot is only there to have something upon which to hang references to Bogart flicks. The story largely mirrors IThe Maltese Falcon/I, with the great whatsit, the things dreams are made of, being a pair of sapphires known as the “eyes of Alexander.” The cast is composed of simulacra of past film greats: Gene Tierney (Michelle Phillips), Sidney Greenstreet (Victor Buono), and Peter Lorre (Herbert Lom)–not so successful, that last one. IQ: Legendary scientist Albert Einstein (played here by Walter Matthau) takes a break from theoretical physics to try to set up his intellectual niece with a handsome auto mechanic in this romantic comedy. The movie’s central conceit is that Einstein’s brilliance extends to matters of the heart, allowing him to immediately sense that Ed Walters (Tim Robbins), a bright, lower-class mechanic obsessed with Popular Science Magazine, would be perfect for his niece Catherine (Meg Ryan). Unfortunately, Catherine is already engaged to a stiff Princeton man. In order to defeat Catherine’s resistance, Uncle Albert decides to help Ed pretend to be a revolutionary scientist, a charade that inevitably leads to much farcical confusion. Einstein’s scientist pals are portrayed as a Greek chorus of Catskills-style kibitzers, featuring such notable perfomers as Lou Jacobi as Kurt Godel and director Gene Saks as Boris Podolsky.

br Thicker waistlines and thinner dialogu don’t stop II Spy Returns/I from being an enjoyable reunion for the stars of the hip ’60s TV series. From 1965 to 1968, Bill Cosby and Robert Culp were the ultimate “salt and pepper” duo, playing super-spies Scott and Robinson (respectively) in a show that combined IMission: Impossible/I intrigu with witty banter and effortless biracial chemistry (at a time when such pairings were still considered experimental). A quarter-century later, Culp was still delightfully acerbic, Cosby had become a TV icon, and II Spy Returns/I gave them a happy excuse to wreak havoc in Vienna, where Robinson’s son (George Newbern) and Scott’s daughter (Salli Richardson) are freshly minted spies subjected to unwanted fatherly meddling. It’s TV fluff from start to finish, but Cosby and Culp are still cool together, even when they’re buck-naked captives of a sniveling British mercenary. It ain’t pretty, but it’s sure to get a laugh. br With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, iSlither/i is the best horror comedy since iShaun of the Dead/i. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004’s well-received remake of iDawn of the Dead/i, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and ’80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story’s a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies. The first victim (played by Michael Rooker) turns into a squid-like, multi-tentacled host monster (kill him and you kill ‘em all), and his terrified wife (Elizabeth Banks) teams up with Wheelsy’s sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from iFirefly/i and iSerenity/i) and mayor (comedic scene-stealer Gregg Henry) to eradicate the alien threat before Wheelsy turns into Slugville. Gunn handles comedy and horror with exuberant flair, and iSlither/i’s greatest strength is that it never aspires to be anything more than it is: 96 minutes of good laughs and grusomeness, served up with the kind of gleeful abandon that only tru horror buffs can fully appreciate.i–Jeff Shannon/i
