And there’s this whole invasion of Earth thing going on too. Super effects worthy of a theater release, like a spaceship clipping Big Ben and landing in the Thames! Also a nice mix of CGI and live-action FX.

This is not really a review of this particular DVD, but of the entire Doctor Who phenomenon. (But I did have my reasons for placing this review here.)
“Doctor Who” is often regarded as the world’s longest running TV production, hardly surprising since it aired for 26 seasons from 1963 to 1989. A new version began airing in 2005. The series is British and due to its longevity, many Brits quite literally grew up with it. Not having the questionable benefit of living in Liverpool or Leeds, I didn’t. However, I’ve seen some of the classic serials from the 1970’s plus the entire “Ninth Doctor” from 2005. The DVD on this product page includes three episodes of the “Ninth Doctor”, including my favorite episode “Dalek”.

I’m not sure if an American can ever grok “Doctor Who”. The series is quite unlike anything you’ve seen before. Forget about Star Trek, Star Wars and PLEASE forget Close Encounters of the Third Kind! “Doctor Who” is to scary for small children, but too childish for teenagers and adults. I never quite understood whose supposed to be watching it. 12-year old boys? Well, at least it appeals to the 12-year old inside me, LOL. And it seems everyone in Britain is still watching. Indeed, the series became so popular there that a crazy pop band sampled the theme melody, re-mixed it with Gary Glitter, and made it to the top of the British charts! (The Timelords, Doctorin’ the Tardis. You can watch it at Youtube. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.)
The plot of “Doctor Who” is actually quite simple. The main character is a mysterious, human-like space alien, simply called The Doctor. He has the ability to shape-shift, which makes it possible for the producers to change the lead actor on a semi-regular basis, thus contributing to the series’ longevity. The Doctor roams the universe in a curious time machine, known as the TARDIS, a time machine disguised as a phone boot! He always has at least one human companion, sometimes two. The Doctor’s main enemies are two races of sentient and evil space robots, the Daleks and the Cybermen. However, he also encounters everything from body-snatchers to mad scientists.
The “Ninth Doctor” series (of which this DVD is a part) is somewhat different from the classical series. The main concept is still the same, but the series have become more “politically corrrect”. I can already hear the critics scream “Damn liberals”. The Doctor’s companions includes a White underclass girl, her Black boyfriend and a bisexual conman with a penchant for fashionwear. Including an overtly bisexual character must have been controversial, especially since he has lines such as: “I remember the last time I was sentenced to die. I don’t remember much after that, until I woke up in bed with the two executioners. Really nice couple. We still keep in touch”. (WHAT???) The series also includes covert criticism of the war in Iraq, and one episode showing Trotskyist posters! Personally, I find all this quite funny and didn’t really mind.
In order to get the entire “Ninth Doctor”, you unfortunately have to buy all volumes of “Doctor Who, The Complete First Season”. This DVD only contains three episodes, including, as I already mentioned, “Dalek”, my favorite episode and the only one that’s even remotely serious. But be warned! If you buy this DVD, or ANY “Doctor Who” DVD, you might get so infatuated that you’ll never stop…

“Eureka Season 3.0″ (meaning the first half of the third season a la “Battlestar Galactica”) provides plenty of those, which adds some new tension to geniustown (including some rather shocking cast changes and a new “love-to-hate” person). It’s kind of disconcerting to only have eight episodes, but they have the signature mixture of warm comedy and intriguing sci-fi mystery.
Among the changes in store: Alison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) and Nathan (Ed Quinn) contemplate remarriage, and Henry is in jail. And the DOD sends in a corporate “fixer” named Eva Thorne (Frances Fisher) arrives to cut the deadwood from Global Dynamics. But then an anti-missile VIPER drone goes AWOL during a flight test and starts threatening Eureka, while Thorne decides to embed herself in Global Dynamics as one of the new bosses.

And while Eva ruthlessly makes GD “profitable,” the usual sci-fi disasters crop up. Carter has to deal with bizarre transformations in a sealed biosphere, a wedding-day timeloop, exploding biomemetic dogs, an impossible volcano brewing under Eureka (and which sprays gross fluids on people), an inept spandex-wearing “Captain Eureka,” a mayoral election heated up by an artificial supernova, and a swarm of ancient Egyptian insects.
In the meantime, Thorne is snooping around Eureka in search of something. Her quest leads to the discovery of a vast military base, and some bodies dead since 1939 — and a bizarre substance that threatens Zoe’s life after she slips and falls in it.
Apparently the once all-important Artifact is yesterday’s business, because the dark subplot of “Eureka Season 3.0″ is the mystery prewar bunker and whatever Thorne wants destroyed. It adds a nice undercurrent of conspiracy and tension to this season, though the focus is always first and foremost on our Everyman Sheriff, and how he tries to deal with the Horrific World-Ending Scientific Crisis of the day.
That’s a nice balance, because the rest of the season flows in a river of gentle humor and extreme scientific problems. Plenty of weird inventions (cloud sculpting, flying rabbits and robot pooches), fun tongue-in-cheek dialogue (”They killed the infected and burned the city to the ground.” “Let’s call that Plan B”), and hilarious comedic moments. And Carter’s always in the middle of it, trying to unravel a way to fix things.
But it’s worth noting that while the Disasters Du Jour and the bunker plots are dealt with by the eighth episode, the half season ends with a cliffhanger for one character. Just sayin’.
Ferguson does a brilliant job as Carter, the down-to-earth Everycop who just wants to do his job (”It’s all fun and games until someone gets cursed”). But Carter has some new problems in this season — his new-agey, pregnant sister moves in with him, and Zoe continues to spread her wings with a job and boyfriend. Erica Cerra’s Jo experiences some relationship woes, while Richardson-Whitfield’s Alison is put in the position of being pretty powerless. Sadly, a longtime cast member also exits the scene early on.
This season also sees the return of Henry, whose skills turn out to be too invaluable for him to rot in prison — and he even gets a new job on top of his old one. And Fisher turns out to be a great addition: she initially makes a great steely-eyed corporate dictator, but the facade cracks as time goes on, and we get to see that she’s haunted by something terrible in the past.
“Eureka Season 3.0″ is way too short (new episodes coming in July), but it still has the fresh mix of out-there sci-fi and small-town comedy. Definitely still worth the seeing.
Due to the writers’ strike two years ago, all scripted shows were unfortunately shortened, resulting in seasons where it was months between new episodes. For some shows, the wait was too long and some were eventually cancelled due to poor ratings.
Luckily, for fans of Eureka, the creators simply split the season into two parts; an eight episode arc, which aired last July, and the second one, which premieres this July. The result is a longer season spread over two years, much like Battlestar Galactica. Some may call the upcoming episodes Season Four, but it’s technically the second half of Season 3.
In any event, the first half of Season 3 is now out on DVD, just in time for the premiere of the remaining season. And while short on episodes, the show was at the top of it’s game this season. I don’t know about you, but to me this show is like comfort food. I love the characters and I love the world they inhabit. A perfect cast led by Colin Ferguson get the most out of the sometimes unbelievable situations. I won’t go into the whole story arc, suffice to say that there is a new arrival in Eureka, who harbors a big secret about the town’s past. And as the saying goes, out with old and in with the new, as SPOILER ALERT! a regular cast member departs midway through.
So while it might be frustrating to only have eight episodes here (and I watched all of them in one afternoon!), I personally prefer quality over quantity. My only grief with this set is a lack of an episode guide. That, and it would have been great to have the musical promo they did before the first episode last year! It was terrific and it’s kind of a tease that they mention it in the music featurette and show a clip of it too, but not the whole thing. That’s only a small complaint, because really the episodes are what it’s all about and I absolutely recommend picking this up!

Movie Title: Promises

I just want to add my voice to the other reviewers who praise Promises. Their descriptions will give you a good idea about the films contents so I’ll just say, this is a very moving and informative film. Most of my reviews are from the stand-point of a middle school teacher looking for materials to use in my class. This film is outstanding! It’s the type of lesson you’ll be excited to teach. If you are looking for something to use to explore and learn about Israel and Palestinian relations buy this DVD. I thought the length of the DVD would lose my students. I was wrong– they stayed engaged through the whole film (about 3 class periods).
If you believe in your heart that, despite every hurdle, peace is possible between the Israelis and Palestinians, this film will fill you with hope and wonder. That’s not to say it’s rosy - the children depicted in the film often exhibit anger and intolerance, but the mere act of recognition between the children of these two warring groups is enough to inspire faith in their futures. This film is a beautiful document of a precious, brave and tenuous experiment on the part of the filmmakers. May we all have the courage to try to guide the next generation into a more peaceful, more understanding world.

Movie Title: Of Mice and Men

John Steinbeck’s masterful story of friendship is definitively brought to screen in Lewis Milestone’s 1939 OF MICE AND MEN. This is a terrific movie, essential viewing for anyone with a tolerance for black and white. The story is so universal and cleanly told this one is hard not to become deeply engrossed in.

Lon Chaney Jr., rightfully, is the chief reason we remember this movie. He nails the role of the feeble-minded Lennie, who wants nothing more than to tend his rabbits. I’ve never seen this movie before, and I was surprised at how effective Burgess Meredith was as Lennie’s friend and protector, George. If Chaney steals most of the scenes he’s in, Meredith is the reliable engine, grounded in humanity, that draws us in.
OF MICE AND MEN has been remade once, in 1992, in a production starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. For all of Malkovich’s talents, I still prefer Chaney’s performance. More importantly, the 1939 production was contemporaneous with Steinbeck’s novel. If the latter movie is a period piece, the 1939 version is current events, and that does make a difference.
Get out the hankies and get ready to be deeply moved. An essential movie.
From 1939, arguably the most oustanding year for films in Hollywood history, this eloquent, moving and touching film is almost a forgotten piece of masterful moviemaking.
Lewis Milestone faithfully brought to the screen John Steinbecks time honored novel about two nomadic workers sharing a simple dream of one day owning their own farm. Lon Chaney gives his most memorable performance (apart from his portrayal’s as tormented wolf man, Lawrence Talbot) as the immensely strong, but simple-minded Lennie. Burgess Meredith, in a fine performance too, plays his jaded travelling companion, George Milton. The two men seek work on a farm bucking barley, but their situation quickly darkens due to the aggressive, bullying attitudes of the owners son, Curley (well acted by serial cowboy, Bob Steele) and his bored and lonely wife, Mae (Betty Field)
In addition to this masterly casting, there is marvellous support lent by Charles Bickford as the straightforward head ranch hand, Slim…..Noah Beery Jr. as the kind hearted and easy going cowpoke, Whit….and noted stage actor Roman Bohen is simply unforgettable as the crippled old timer, Candy. Bohen solidly contributes to many key scenes throughout the film, and his on screen relationship with his faithful, old dog is exceptionally moving (aided by a poignant score from Aaron Copeland)
“Of Mice and Men” rightfully deserves it’s place as one of the finest American films of the twentieth century. An inspiring piece of film making that will illict a wide range of emotions from fans of strong, story driven films. Simply, a must see !

With a stroke of success in the 80’s, the Robotech: Macross series still has a place for many fans today and shares a strong cult following. Being a fan of the series as a kid, I decided to buy the whole Robotech: Macross series, but I came across the overwelming amount of editions to the series. I didn’t know which to buy, so I watched them all. Here are the differences between to different boxsets (all offered through Amazon):
Robotech: the Complete Macross Series
One Boxset: 6 disc
Sells for around $60-$65
Nothing special, picture quality is not great, but bearable. Comes in one compact boxset with all the disc in it. Would not reccomend getting this edition unless you just want a copy of the series and want to spend the least possible amount of money.
Robotech: The Legacy Collection: Macross Saga (Collections 1-3)
Three Boxsets: with 3 disc in each
Sells for around $40 each boxset, entire set around $120-$130
Same picture quality as the above set, but with addtional features. Comes with the most extras out of any current sets, but even then, they are so-so. I would actually recommend getting the above edition as I was not impressed with the extras, some were interesting, but it definately didn’t justify the price. Your paying almost twice the price.
Robotech Remastered: The Macross Saga (Volumes 1-3)
Three Boxsets: Two disc each boxset
Sells for around $25 each boxset, entire set around $75-$80
Remastered picture quality superior to both sets above, sound quality much improved. This is the set that I would recommend. The price is affordable and well worth the extra money compared to the first set. Also includes a few bonus footage.
Macross: Super Dimensional Fortress (Sets 1-3)
Three Boxsets: Three discs each boxset
Sells for around $60-$70 each boxset, entire series around $180-200
Macross is the original Japanese series of the Robotech: Macross Saga. The storyline is slightly different with different music and sounds. When it was brought to the US, Harmony Gold added the Macross material with two other Japanese series to make Robotech. Macross is more “mature” and includes several scenes taken out of Robotech. Picture quality is even more crisp than the Remastered Series. I would reccomend only to die-hard Robotech fans. It’s pretty expensive and lacks really any real extra features.
Oh, for the love of God– don’t tell me I’ve become the victim of yet ANOTHER deplorable DVD double-dip ploy (check out my gripe about this annoying phenomenon at [another review])?! It wasn’t enough that Harmony Gold & ADV got me to buy the Legacy Collection DVD box sets, now they gotta throw out all-new platters with a souped-up sound mix and “new” footage in an avaricious effort to get me to buy the same thing twice (almost)?! Well, looks like their efforts succeeded, ‘cuz I just hadda pick this up to see what the fuss was all about…
The main attraction of this “new-&-improved” edition is the inclusion of some “new” footage that was originally edited out of the original Macross show ‘cuz it was considered less than appropriate for the American kidvid audience at the time. The extra bits in this particular collection consist primarily of Minmei’s keister (both clothed and bare), a scene extension featuring Hikaru Ichi– er, I mean Rick Hunter’s marksmanship with a Zentraedi-sized laser pistol, and a soft-bordered Rick Hunter flashback that pops up during his first flight and combat in a Veritech fighter. Otherwise, not much else in the way of visuals has been thrown back into the mix. Well, except for the redone opening and closing credits, which contains new typeface and more Macross footage to replace the excised Southern Cross and New Generation bits. ‘Course, if you’ve seen the original Macross show that the first act of Robotech is based on (which I highly recommend if you haven’t seen it yet–the first set’s available for purchase at [Amazon.com]), the added scenes won’t be all that new to ya, anyway…
My biggest disappointment with this set was the remastered video, which displayed inconsistent picture quality throughout the presentation. While some parts were reasonably sharp and bright, much of the footage was a bit grainy and muddy. In fact, some of the lowest quality video looked worse than what was seen in the previous DVD release! Apparently Harmony Gold was unable to acquire the footage that AnimEigo painstakingly cleaned and restored for the aforementioned Macross DVD sets, and had to go with the best of what they had on hand… which apparently wasn’t all that great.
This collection’s one truly extensive improvement is the sound mix, which has been nicely remastered in 5.1 channel stereo. Most of the sound effects have been totally redone, especially the various explosion and space fold noises. The only downside to the new explosions is that they’re not too varied. Most of ‘em sound like crumbling rocks and masonry– noises that a metal spaceship most likely doesn’t make when it’s gettin’ blasted to bits. Other sounds have been “boosted” for better auditory perception. The most noticeable examples of this enhanced audio are the background noises that play during the “battle stations” scenes on the SDF-1’s bridge. But the best audio improvement of all is the remastered voice track: they fixed it so that it stands out reasonably well from the background sounds, thus making the dialogue more comprehensible.
As for bonus material and special features– well, aside from trailers for other ADV anime videos and a foil pack of glossy trading cards, there ain’t any on either platter. Looks like you’ll hafta hang on to those ‘Elements of Robotechnology’ bonus discs that came with the Legacy Collection box sets if you’ve a hankerin’ for supplemental material…

Movie Title: Vampyres

Okay, 1974’s VAMPYRES admittedly has numerous nude scenes–full frontal female nude scenes, in some cases–that was a prerequisite for the sexploitation horror pouring out of Europe in the 1970s. And yes, the two female players have hourglass figures, ample bosoms, and beautiful faces. However, this British indie film, directed by Spanish auteur José Ramón Larraz, has a cinematic aesthetic that makes it stand out above its contemporaries as a horror film of true quality. Larraz does a fantastic job of directing, working in close conjunction with cinematographer Harry Waxman to ensure that nearly every shot of every scene is a balanced, well-framed image. In keeping with the spooky atmosphere of the moldering English manor house and surrounding grounds used for location shooting, production designer Ken Bridgeman maintains the perfect ambiance throughout. And unlike many other buxom sexploitation actresses of the era, erotic stars Marianne Morris and Anulka (Dziubinska) can actually act, and they do a superb job in making the eponymous characters both scary and sympathetic.
In addition to the outstanding efforts of cast and crew, the tight, well-written script is refreshingly new–even from this vantage point of some thirty years hence. Avoiding the usual vampire clichés, these VAMPYRES are really more like ghosts who have some inexplicable but insatiable desire to feed on the blood of the living. They don’t have fangs, they can tolerate moderate sunlight, and instead of resting in musty old caskets, they sleep in a wine cellar during the brightest of the daylight hours. They also can eat, drink liquids other than blood, and seem to genuinely enjoy sex. And they even sometimes have sympathy for their victims, a characteristic that may lead to their ultimate downfall.
The myth of the vampire has always been regarded as sexual in nature, especially the intimacy of the flesh-penetrating bite on the neck. VAMPYRES carries this metaphor to the extreme, with heterosexual vampiric coitus portrayed as an intensely passionate, rigorous event that includes feasting on the blood of the non-vampiric partner. And the eponymous characters in VAMPYRES don’t gently suck from two pricks in the neck; in the midst of sexual passion, they tear open their victims and lap up the crimson liquid with ferocious, writhing pleasure.
In short, VAMPYRES is an excellent British erotic horror flick that is superior to most others from its era of origin, and it can even stand up against many straightforward, non-sexploitation horror films. It is well written, well acted, and has high production values throughout–and all this in spite of a low, low budget. Director Larraz and his co-scripters have take an idea that they could play for camp or sheer sexploitation and, instead, deliver a thought-provoking look at indiscriminate and promiscuous sex, physical obsession, and guilt. And on top of that, they still throw in lots of delicious T&A.
The DVD from Blue Underground is a great buy. Not only does it present a widescreen restored director’s version of this excellent film–transferred primarily from the original negatives–but it also has lots of cool extras. It offers a feature-commentary track with director José Ramón Larraz and producer Brian Smedley-Aston that is both hilarious–due to Larraz’s frank use of English colloquialisms–and informative. And there are also recent interviews with Marianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska, the film’s beautiful stars; a lost scene recreated via production stills; U.S. and European trailers; and more. This is a piece of erotic artistic cinematic history that any serious horror fans will want to add to their collections.
A pair of bisexual women (Marianne Morris and Playboy playmate Anulka) living in a dark, decaying mansion have a craving for blood and sex. Hitchiking in long black cloaks, they lure men home and then take them to bed, slash them with knives, and dump the bodies, making it look like a car wreck. They like one guy so much they keep him around for days and he knows something bad is happening, but he’s not sure what. Some people camping nearby also suspect that the women are up to strange things…. The violence is strong even though there’s more blood than gore, plenty of sex and nudity, and some very lyrical, beautiful scenes. The ending throws a whole new, darker twist on the proceedings and ties it all together nicely. It has kind of a “Hammer Films” look to it, but the storyline is more along the lines of Jean Rollin. Even though the budget was small, this is a quality-looking film. The DVD looks great and contains a commentary track with producer Brian Smedley-Aston and director Joseph Larraz that’s worth listening to - it’s informative, and Larraz is hilarious and pulls no punches - ya gotta love the guy, even though he admits he’s become a dirty old man (the comment during one of Anulka’s nude scenes had me rolling on the floor). 
It’s one of the most entertaining commentary tracks I’ve heard on a DVD, and a quality film besides.

Movie Title: Where Eagles Dare

Quite simply one of the greatest war movies ever made. A top notch thriller loaded with action, espionage and double crosses, “Where Eagles Dare” is the kind of movie that Hollywood just doesn’t make anymore. This isn’t some politically correct drama steeped in reality. No, this is good guys vs. bad guys. This is pure unabashed fantasy which keeps the audience on the edge of its seat. This is just darn good entertainment!
Richard Burton is absolutely cunning as the British agent who leads an elite group of soldiers behind enemy lines and into a seemingly unpenetrable German castle to rescue an imprisoned American General. A young Clint Eastwood is the only American on the mission. Clint is his usual cool and calm self. However he, like the audience, isn’t sure who to trust. Somebody’s a double agent, but exactly who is anyone’s guess. Don’t worry about figuring it out, just sit back and enjoy the drama. You’ll love the growing tension and suspicion between Burton and Eastwood.
The journey into the castle is classic heart-stopping drama. Even better is Burton’s fight with a German soldier high atop a ski lift — truly one of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed. Bullets are flyin’ and bombs are blastin’ throughout. In the end, heroes emerge while evil perpetrators get their just due. Classic, absolutely classic!
And yes, as several reviewers have noted, the stunning scenery and beautiful cinematography in this film would greatly benefit from a widescreen DVD treatment. So, how ’bout it, I want my DVD!
This movie, filled with drama, action, and a complex plot that will make your head spin, has it all. Richard Burton is dashing as the cold plotting secret agent who is leading his team on a mission to save D-Day from disaster. Clint Eastwood, here little more than a teenager, is wonderful as the somewhat befuddled American army ranger who cannot figure out why he is even on the mission.
Any attempt to go into detail about the story would ruin some of the fun. Suffice to say that you will be riveted both by the action and the performances. One note though, Burton’s monologue is amazing.
If you like WWII movies and have not seen this one, you don’t know what you are missing.

Manga has spent very little effort to bring this classic anime to your PSP. The only audio track is the English dub, so therefore there are no subtitles. Worse yet, the movie is presented in a widescreen format — the original movie was not widescreen, so presentation in this format just cuts off the top and bottom of the scene.

Image quality is soft, and looks to be a straight conversion from the poorly done DVD Manga brought out a few years ago.
CLASSIC.
If you didn’t know about it you are probably dissapointed with all of the anime you’ve seen,with the exception of the Basilisk series.

From a teen to an older person and everyone in between won’t be able to deny the genius of this movie.
A must have for any type of DVD collection. College students, or anyone with roommates… lock this one away.

The title False or Lost Gospels may be a bit misleading. Early Christianity was surrounded by a complex world of religious diversity and many times other groups tried to ‘borrow’ from each other to help earn converts to their religion. In reality, that’s what Gospels like Thomas, Judas, etc are all about tryin to create interest in Gnosticism by using well known names of people well known to Christians. This video makes that clear–unlike some others that try to see the Gnostics as an off shoot of Christianity (instead of a seperate religious group with Greek roots). This video is a good example of explaining a somewhat complicated situation in an understandable way.
This is a good primer for the Christian or seeker who may be confused by scholars such as Elaine Pagels who claim that there were many “competing Christianities” and “hundreds of Gospels” in the early centuries. This DVD exposes the faulty postmodernist thinking behind this so-called scholarship.
