This is one of the funniest movies made in my lifetime. I had seen the movie hundreds of times and equally enjoyed each viewing, so when I heard there was going to be an unrated version, I pre-ordered it right away.

This is a great DVD edition. The deleted scenes are hilarious - and some probably should have been left in the movie (like the “other peoples’ money - seize the day” scene). The alternate endings are also pretty cool, but they definitely chose the best ending for the actual theatrical release. The retrospective documentary is also quite interesting, as you get some insight into the production, casting, etc… of the movie, as well as the impact it has had on comedy fans over the years. If you search through the interactive menus enough, you will even find a couple of hidden features.

Dumb and Dumber lives on as a standout comedy film. It just never seems to get old… I’m just excited to finally get some bonus footage from this comedy classic!

If there is a film out there that has created such an rift among viewers as Dumb and Dumber, I’d like to see it. It seems that everyone I know either loves the movie or abhorrs it. It is easy to see why people love the movie. The movie is outrageously funny, and I believe most of the film’s critics will concede this. However, without fail, the number one critique of the film by opponents is, “but it’s so stupid.” This is like saying you don’t like Schindler’s List because “it’s too serious.” Of course it’s stupid! That’s the point! Unfortunately, pounding the keys on the keyboard harder isn’t helping to portray my sentiments here. First of all, this is not a movie you can only see once. Sure, one viewing will account for all the “big laughs”, Lloyd’s airport fiasco, Harry’s bathroom adventure and the ski lift accident. If you base your judgement on the big laughs alone, I can see how the movie could seem innane and childish. I suggest every critic of Dumb and Dumber should watch the movie a few more times for the little laughs. There are so many jokes and they are so clever that I find myself appreciating the movie more each time I watch it. For example, in the scene with the state trooper (Harland Williams) the center of comedic attention is clearly the point at which the officer drinks the beer bottle full of urine. This “big laugh” often steals the limelight away from the smaller laughs in the same scene. While handing the bottle over to the trooper, Lloyd accidentally spills some of the urine on Harry, to Harry’s obvious displeasure. When the officer realizes what it is he has swallowed, one can faintly hear Lloyd suggest, “Tic Tac sir?” It is subtle moments like these that pervade the movie and make it great every time you watch it. I think part of the problem with the movie is that there are simply too many jokes in the movie. Many of the more subtle, clever jokes get overshadowed by bigger ones, leaving some feeling like the movie is simple toilet humor. This is a grave injustice. Perhaps the most complexing issue concerning the critical reception of Dumb and Dumber is the overwhelming acclaim of the Farelly brother’s follow-up film, There’s Something About Mary. The two movies are eerily similar. Both involve a road trip starting in Providence. These trips are in search of a woman who is way to good for her respective suitor. In both, the protagonists encounter difficulty and comedic moments along the way. Yet everyone I know loves Mary, while Dumb and Dumber recieves mixed reviews. The only significant difference between the two films is that in Dumb and Dumber, our hero doesn’t get the girl. Perhaps this is why reception of the movie is so clearly delineated along gender lines. Women, I can only assume, want Dumb and Dumber to be a romantic comedy, which it is clearly not. Mary can be seen perhaps as fitting this genre because it has the textbook ‘boy gets girl’ ending (although my mother wanted Brett Favre to get the girl). The fact that Dumber doesn’t fall into the obligatory cliche ending is, in my opinion, a large part of it’s appeal. Whether you like it or not, you should buy a copy of Dumb and Dumber and watch it fifty times like I have. Then I think you will understand that being stupid is “genius, sheer genius.”

Not only does this movie raise the bar for fighting choreography, but it has so many other facets that make it a movie to be appreciated by movie lovers of all genre’s. I won’t dwell on the martial arts aspect. There have been plenty of reviews that have addressed the fact that this movie’s fight scenes mark the greatest efforts of a martial arts wonder like Jackie Chan. There is no single martial arts talent in the West that can even compare to Hong Kong greats like Jackie. I would prefer to point out that unlike most martial arts pictures ( and unfortunately this includes some of Jackie’s too) this picture has a quality story and great characters too. So much so that I have seen people who can’t stand martial arts pictures really enjoy this one. Viewers will be amazed by the martial arts ability while they laugh at the antics of Jackie playing the young mischievous Fei Hung and Anita Mui playing his equally mischievous step-mother. This movie truly represents the range of Jackie’s acting ability from humor, to penitant, to unbridled anger. All in all, a movie to be appreciated by everyone.

I know some of you will disagree and say that Bruce Lee’s “Enter the Dragon”, or Jet Li’s “Fist of Legend” was the best ever made but I would have to disagree. While Bruce Lee was the best Martial Artist ever, his movies were average in regards to their fight choreography. No one could ever touch him in his films. The fight choreography in “Drunken Master 2″ was incredible. It was realistic because there were almost no wire stunts involved and the fight scenes were fantastic. The fight scene with Jackie and Liu Chia Liang (Lau Kar Leung) in the beginning was pure poetry in motion. The final fight scene was fifteen minutes of pure adrenaline pumping action. Unique choreography makes this movie a classic. Unlike Jet Li’s characterization of Wong Fei Hung, Jackie makes Fei Hung seem more human and vulnerable. Nobody could ever touch Jet Li in the “Once Upon a Time in China” series. Plus some of the moves just look so ridiculously fake. “Fist of Legend” is Jet’s best movie because it isn’t as fake and he actually has to fight hard to win. However, it is still only the second best film ever made. Not to criticize any other reviewer, but since when does the ability to do 540’s and 720’s and Butterfly kicks make a martial art film great? I have been involved in Martial Arts for over a 20 years and would love for someone to try to fight me using those kicks. While they look fancy in forms competition, they mean nothing in a real tournment fight and even less in a real street fight. This film is without a doubt the best Jackie Chan film ever and the best ever made. (At least until Jackie and Jet team up to do a film as has been rumored)

Tokyo Pig was a cartoon on ABC Family a few years ago. This DVD features 8 episodes of the series (When Pigs Fly, Dad is the Worst Cook in the World, Luck of the Draw, Trouble in Lightning-land, A Bitter Fruit, Incredible Shrinking School, Samurai Lunch Lady, and pigs on Ice). The show is very weird. For example, Sunny Pig does a dance each episode for no particular reason. If you like the show or other bizarre shows, you will probably want to get this DVD.

Tokyo Pig tells the story of Spencer Weinberg-Takahama, a normal third grader. One day, his life is perfectly normal. He goes to school, does his homework, gets straight As, and lives with his unusual family. The next day, thanks to a magic diary, he receives his loyal and amazing pet, Sunny Pig. So, you’re probably wondering if TP is a good show. Read on.

Tokyo Pig can be summed up in one word: underrated. The show itself is excellent, and the animation (which is colorful and weird enough for kids but stylish enough for parents to bear) feels straight out of Japan, the mystic land of anime and video games. The voice acting is good, and there are some familiar voices, such as Spencer himself. The voice actor is the same one who voiced Tai Kamiya in the first two seasons of “Digimon.” Also familiar is Wally Wingert (Spencer’s dad), who, unless I am mistaken, voiced a Tallest in “Invader Zim” and was a cast regular on the popular sketch show, “Kids in the Hall.”

The show has excellent writing and characters (such as mad scientist Wigstaff and Southern beauty queen Tiffany) and, and the plots are well thought out. Character design is good and funny, and the show itself deserves five stars. Why did I give it four, then?

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best of Tokyo Pig! Click Here

The DVD is bare bones. Commentary? No. Animatics? No. Documentary? No. The only so-called “special features” are English captions for the hearing impaired. Tokyo Pig is a great show, and deserves these extras. Something more like the “Invader Zim” DVDs (which are jam-packed with extras) would be nice.

So, overall, buy or rent? Definitely a buy. The show is great, but please Miramax Kids, add more extras to your DVDs! I hope that Miramax Kids will release more volumes of Tokyo Pig in the future.

If this is the ground-breaking 30’s detective movie they say it is, the DVD deserves more care as to quality control. (Please note that the distributor is not the studio that originally produced the film.) That said, the mystery is entertaining; and the acting is solid. However, the DVD picture quality is poor and is a major distraction. UCLA needs to get to work on this one, fast! The sound is surprisingly strong for most of the film, except in a couple of places where it cuts in and out. I will keep this DVD in my collection, but I cannot recommend it to any one to buy.

Great story with a great actor. Too bad Alpha didn’t care enough to find a good print… sound is okay. I would not buy from them again.

After the first Chaplin Collection, I expected a terrific second set, but this far surpassed my expectations. My sole concern for the set as announced was that all the First National shorts would not be included, and that only the three which Chaplin compiled into the feature, THE CHAPLIN REVUE, would be present. But lo and behold, THE CHAPLIN REVUE is now a two-disc set which includes the four additional First Nationals! True, the other three are presented in Chaplin’s 1959 compilation format, but still, it’s all here. CITY LIGHTS, THE KID, and THE CIRCUS are all given two-disc presentations with tons of extras, while MONSIEUR VERDOUX, A WOMAN OF PARIS, and A KING IN NEW YORK receive one disc apiece, in which there are still some dandy bonus features. Add to the pot a widescreen version of the over two hours long CHARLIE, Richard Schickel’s recent and acclaimed documentary, and you’ve got an amazing wealth of Chaplin material that will keep enthusiasts busy for weeks. The visual and audio quality is stunning, and the packaging quite attractive. When you divide the cost of the set by these twelve well-packed discs, it seems a financial pittance for a fortune’s worth of Chaplin. I could have paid three times the amount for this material and not felt cheated. Unconditionally recommended.

The Good: I’m not a complete Chaplin aficionado but I believe if you pick up this DVD set and the first Chaplin DVD collection, you’ll have all his films with the exception of his early Essanay and Mutual films and his 1967 film “A Countess From Hong Kong” which Chaplin directed and features a brief cameo. Besides the films themselves, this set contains photo galleries, trailers, brief documentaries, deleted scenes, some brief but fascinating introductions by Chaplin biographer David Robinson, and other related materials - all of them presented in pristine, and in most cases stunning, condition by restoration artists MK2.

The Bad: Chaplin re-released many of these films in the ’60s and ’70s and the Chaplin family obviously considers these as the final word since they’ve included them here. I’m assuming this is a good thing because it would allow MK2 to work from newer prints rather than the old film masters from the ’20s and ’30s. Unfortunately, Chaplin also added new music in many cases and made some minor scene deletions. I haven’t seen the earliest versions to be able to compare musical scores. And the scores used here worked fine for me. Still, it would’ve been nice if they included the original film instead of tacking the brief deleted scenes on separately. This was done perfectly with “The Gold Rush” set in the first Chaplin DVD collection which includes the original film and the reworked modern version with Chaplin’s narration. There are several spelling mistakes on the packaging of “The Kid” - the title has dropped out somewhere along the line in its production - an error which should’ve been caught, considering all the care they’ve put into this package. There are also some isolated spelling mistakes in the title cards during “The Chaplin Revue” shorts they could’ve easily caught. The “Woman” disc lists that it includes movie posters on the box’s contents - however, they’ve forgot to include them here. The box is also rather flimsy paperboard. I recently bought the Monty Python boxed set which comes in a hard cardboard box. This is another minor point but it would’ve been nice to get a solid housing considering the cost of this set and care put into the materials. In addition, the FBI warnings on all the movies and documentaries appear for about five minutes in several languages - which is fine - but unfortunately, you can’t fast forward through any of them. The only thing you can do is stop the DVD and reboot to get back to the main menu or wait the warnings out until the menu comes back. This inconvenience could’ve been corrected as well.

The Ugly: In their haste to put this thing out, possibly to coincide with the current Jeffrey Vance coffee table book “Chaplin - Genius of the Cinema,” they’ve made a few glaring errors. In the case of the A King in New York / A Woman of Paris two disc set, both discs work properly - but they’ve been mislabelled. (Disc One is actually Disc Two and vice versa.) I purchased this set in Canada at HMV so this is not strictly an issue with the sets Amazon are selling. What’s worse is they’ve also made the same mistake with “The Chaplin Revue” two disc set. Again, both discs play fine but are mislabelled. These sloppy errors will probably be corrected in future print runs. But it’s such a bonehead mistake - particularly making them twice in one collection - they really should’ve caught them.

But all in all, even these minor points still can’t obscure the fact this is a really phenomenal DVD set with all the prime, sublime glory of Chaplin. You just wish they hadn’t been asleep at the switch with all these careless little errors.

Sam Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch’ is a masterpiece western. Not the best ever made, but close. So don’t think I don’t like this movie because I love it. However, since Mexicans are its villains, perhaps you’d be interested to read an opinion from this side of the border.

The Mexico of ‘The Wild Bunch’ looks more like a metaphor than a real place. It is both Heaven and Hell; the theatre where the bunch will find Death but also Redemption. Accordingly, every Mexican depicted in the picture is either a saint or a monster (no middle ground here, except for the Mexican member of the Bunch, who is aptly named “Angel”, although a fallen one). This serves the story splendidly, for it’s meant to be an epic ballad and not a travelogue, but it does jolt the Mexican viewer because the “good Mexico” is portrayed so idyllic it’s unreal, while the “bad Mexico” is very, very accurate; in fact, no American movie has captured the look, sound, feel, texture and carnage of the Mexican Revolution as this one has (even if the grandiose final scene, where the Bunch kills hundreds of heavily armed soldiers all by themselves and none of the four falls down even when riddled by bullets, defies all logic!). Perhaps that’s why it was banned in Mexico back when it was released in 1969.

Funny, for it was filmed in Mexico as well. The Texas bordertown you see at the begining of the story is actually Parras, Coahuila, and many of its citizens acted as extras in the movie: white ones as “Texans”, brown ones as -what else?- Mexicans! Don Raúl Madero, brother of Francisco I. Madero, the man who started the Mexican Revolution, appears …as a Texan! Even the two German officers are Mexican! So, as you can see, we Mexicans come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and hardly fit these two tiresome “noble peasant”-”greaser bandito” stereotypes American movies seem so comfortable with! I hope some day Hollywood realizes this and “walk the extra mile” to portray us for what we are: a very complex and diverse society. Neither saints, nor monsters, and certainly not mere bowling pins!

P.S.: Many great Mexican directors, all personal friends of Peckinpah, appear in the film. Emilio “Indio” Fernández (Mapache) and Chano Urueta (Angel’s grandfather) were the best of our cinema’s Golden Age. Fernando Wagner (German officer) was also a competent theatre director, and Alfonso Arau (Herrera) is best known for his international hit ‘Like Water for Chocolate’. Jorge Russek (Zamorra) was an outstanding photographer for National Geographic, and Sonia Amelio (Teresa) is a world-aclaimmed dancer (she was even awarded with an “Order of Lenin” back in the Soviet Union). And just for the record, the word “Mapache” (”racoon”) stands for “coward thief”. No Mexican general, no matter how corrupt, would use, I believe, such a nickname! And since Mapache is “a killer working for Huerta”, the action takes place in 1913, not 1916 (Huerta was ousted in early 1914).

There’s not much that can be noted about Sam Peckinpah’s brilliant 1969 western epic “The Wild Bunch” that has not already been written. It was an unanticipated, influential work where all things came together, but for a moment, the end product a huge, sweeping canvas of intimacy between comrades, violence between combatants, desperate anger amidst changing times. Part Kurosawa, part Siegel, part Fuller, part Ford, Peckinpah combined his inspirations with a healthy dose of 1960s rebellion producing the ultimate work of his generation, and one of the greatest westerns in history. It was Peckinpah’s great fortune that the right actors were available for this film - William Holden and Robert Ryan in the twilight of their memorable careers, Ernest Borgnine with just enough youth to be a perfect and loyal presence, Edmond O’Brien chewing up the scenery with tobacco-stained teeth, and of course Peckinpah friends Strother Martin, L.Q. Jones and Warren Oates in salty supporting roles. It was also his great fortune cinematographer Lucien Ballard and composer Jerry Fielding were also on hand to participate in his steadfast vision.

Peckinpah also had something to prove at this point in his career, when he was still a hungry director with a vision, before alcoholism, disillusionment and celebrity status took hold. He hid nothing from viewers, and his contradictory heart was laid bare in “The Wild Bunch.” The direction and editing during the violent moments of this film - the opening bank robbery and the concluding battle with the Mexican army - are some of the most unforgettable scenes ever put on film. But ironically, and this was usually the case in most Peckinpah films, it is the quiet moments one remembers. Pike (Holden) and Dutch’s (Borgnine) melancholy conversation next to a campfire; The Bunch riding out of Angel’s village as if in a funeral procession; Deke (Ryan) taking Pike’s pistol from it’s holster, gently holding it in his hand; and of course Pike standing in the doorway and mouthing two simple words, “Let’s go.”

And of course you have The Walk, in which Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Ben Johnson quietly begin loading their guns, cocking them, arming themselves, smiling at one another, standing shoulder to shoulder. There’s not much left for these forgotten outlaws who have lived past their time. Just a code of honor, just their self respect. And so they Walk into the heart of the Mexican army to retrieve their comrade Angel, a prisoner and personal enemy of General Mapache. These surviving members of The Wild Bunch are free to go, but Angel, youthful, love-struck, rebellious, was one of them. They are not going to leave their comrade.

After viewing the extraordinary documentary “The Wild Bunch: An Album In Montage” and seeing the rare footage of Peckinpah literally improvising The Walk, walking alongside Holden, Borgnine, Oates and Johnson, inventing by instinct, one realizes how fiercely creative this man was as a director. This film was his moment in time, his vision, his idea, Peckinpah’s nightmarish and amazing dream.

Peckinpah never really made a film quite like “The Wild Bunch” again. Of course, no director ever really has before or since. His uneven career of 14 films, some good, some not, has been celebrated and honored. Peckinpah the man, adorned in faded jeans and bandanna, certainly perpetuated his myth-like status. But in the end, you will always have “The Wild Bunch,” an unforgettable film, raw, gritty, whiskey-soaked, sublime. I cry whenever I watch this film. I cry in awe. All things came together for Peckinpah on “The Wild Bunch,” and the moment is everlasting.

Who could imagine that, 60 years after the event, a home-made escape tunnel would still be recognizable? And in friable, sandy soil at that? Or that the rubber stamp made from a POW’s heel, once used to make forged documents for the escapees, would still have the recognizable marking of German Nazi insignia? Or that a chain of Klim cans, once strung together to ventilate the tunnel, would still exist in spite of decades of corrosion?

This DVD shows this and more. Archeologists first determined, from old aerial photos of Stalag Luft III, the site of the onetime hut that contained tunnel Dick. Next, the trap of Dick was located. It had been designed and then cleverly concealed in a concrete draining pit by a POW who had been a Polish engineer in the RAF. The tunnel opening itself was just beyond a vertical slotted slab that had been fitted on the side of the draining pit (not the underside of the pit as erroneously shown in the film on the Great Escape). The corroded hooks once used to lift the slab were also found. Part of the electric wiring used in Dick was still visible. Most probably, it had been part of that waterproof wiring that a POW had stolen from a German electrician. The fact that Dick had been abandoned for escape purposes and had been converted into a storage chamber explains the fact that the forger’s rubber stamp was also found in the upper part of the tunnel.

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: The Great Escape! Click Here

Because the tunnel had been dug thirty feet deep, a power shovel was used to dig a pit down to that level. One could at once appreciate the challenge to the tunnelers posed by the loose yellow sand. It kept cascading down into the pit. However, even though Dick had long since collapsed and the shoring boards rotted away, the crisp linear outline of the tunnel could still be clearly seen at the bottom of the pit. Further probing revealed the chain of Klim cans once used to ventilate this tunnel. Unfortunately, the increasing danger of the sand collapsing caused further excavation to be called off.

A number of ageing veterans of Stalag Luft III were on hand to observe the excavation. One of them was Jimmy James. The scenes of the excavation of Dick were interspersed with scenes showing old photos of the camp as well as descriptions of the Great Escape itself. It would be interesting if there were a followup dig to the site of Harry. After the Great Escape, the Germans had poured sewage into the tunnel but, unlike Tom, did not blow it up. At very least the concrete plugs poured in by the Germans, into both the exit and entry shafts of Harry, should be readily findable.

IN A NUTSHELL:

This Nova documentary features the original and the actual site of “THE GREAT ESCAPE” as seen by “Battlefield Archaeologists” who uncover artifacts which fit together neatly with the story of “The Great Escape”. Three survivors of the historic event are on hand at the site and provide first-hand insight to augment the theories and official record. The high-security POW camp, Stalag Luft III, in Zagon, Poland, was on March 24, 1944, the site of a daring mass escape where 76 allied prisoners got out, 50 were “killed while escaping” several weeks later after being captured, and 4 made it to safety.

Suffice it to say that the Nova battlefield archaelogical team, equipped with scientists, witnesses, engineers, and excavators, found the remains of one of the famous escape’s tunnels along with a plethora of artifacts that support the historical and eyewitness accounts.

EXCELLENT COMPANION TO THE WAR DRAMA “THE GREAT ESCAPE” - Starring Steve McQueen:

This Nova documentary makes an terrific companion to the 1963 Hollywood drama [filmed in Germany], ideally to be seen immediately before the movie to provide insight and perspective. It is nice to see that the famous 1963 war drama “THE GREAT ESCAPE” starring Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough was very closely based on fact, much more so than most other war dramas from the era.

Recommended Highly, Have Fun.

This movie is a perfect companion to Tony Curtis’ other auto car race movie, The Great Race. The package shows the aspect ratio as 1.78 widescreen, which would fill the whole screen of a HDTV. The actual ratio shows as it should be having been filmed in Panavision as 2.35:1.

I’m a huge fan of medical dramas and originally I really didn’t see how this show could differ itself from any other average medical show. I got hooked in the first five minutes and I’ve been watching ever since. Now that ER is sort of past its prime Grey’s Anatomy can easy claim the title as the best medical drama on television.

What really differs the show from any other medical show I’ve seen is the character development. The character development helped keep me interested and I felt I got to know Meredith and the other interns. I also got a feel for the hardships being an intern is and how much work goes into becoming a doctor. You also get a feeling of connection with the interns because of how much we find out about them. Dr. Shepherd, Dr. Bailey, and Dr. Burke help them along the way and offer some good advice. It’s very informative and I’ve learned a few things watching it.

Overall I think Grey’s Anatomy is one of the best and most addictive shows on TV right now. This DVD is a great way to see it from the beginning and it’s priced right and I highly recommend it.

I’m an ICU nurse. After spending 12 hr stretches in the hospital, watching people in a hospital is not my idea of a good time; but, omg, I love this show! The chemistry between the characters is great. I am completely hooked. You can’t even get me to go into work for incentive pay on a Sunday night now! Forget about it. And, should I even run into Dr. “McDreamy” in an elevator, I’m going to do just what Meredith did!

I have often thought upon viewing the prequel trilogy, the intervening years between the original and the new. To be sure, most of the criticisms of the new trilogy are adult in nature. We speak ill of wooden dialogue and acting, convoluted storylines, and themes that aren’t true to the nature of the purity of science fiction. I was only five when Episode IV was release, so my only criticism of that particular film came in the form of whining to my folks that I couldn’t see it again and again and again.

My point is this: George Lucas has his flaws, most of which are related to him being out of the director’s chair for more than 20 years before embarking on his new trilogy toy, but I think, more importantly, that we as a filmgoing populace have changed as well. The fact that Lucas has been able to bridge that gap successfully (while telling the story backwards, to boot!) demonstrates the man’s immense talents. Perfect? Far from it, but damned entertaining, nonetheless.

Which brings me to the crown jewel of the prequel trilogy. “Revenge of the Sith” is the second best film of all six, ranking only behind “The Empire Strikes Back” in terms of depth an substance. The acting is better and the writing, if not terrific, is helped by a game cast and a pace that doesn’t allow you to catch your breath. Hayden Christiansan, for the most part, owns this role, displaying an adult gravity he was unable to display in the dramatically clunky “Attack of the Clones” The rage, frustration, and fear contrasted with Anakin’s heroism and confidence in the face of battle made for a complex character who you found yourself rooting for despite the story’s preordained outcome.

The special effects, as usual, are outstanding, but for the most part serve the film this time. There are points during the first two prequel films that you feel Lucas and Co. are simply showing off some of their shiny new toys, but in this film there is a more concrete sense of purpose.

Dramatically the film belongs to Ian McDiarmid. His performance creates the right balance of charm and villiany and by doing so makes Anakin’s turn all the more believable even though the turn itself feels a tad sudden. In fact, I dare say that I enjoyed McDiarmid more when he was under the guise of Palpatine than when he fully reveals himself as Sidious. The scene during the opera is one of the great dramatic highpoints of any of the six movies.

As for the flaws: sure, there were a few. I would like to have seen a more galvanizing series of events leading to Anakin’s turn, perhaps some more perceived betrayals at the hands of the Jedi Council? I would like to have seen a more fleshed out performance by Natalie Portman, who seems to be more of an afterthought than a character in the third film. (On a side note, Portman is a terrific actress, but was, in this humble reviewer’s opinion, the most ill-served of the entire cast by the clunky dialogue that pervades all three films.)

The one part to which I didn’t object that seemed to be the bane of many Star Wars fans is the scene involving the birth of Vader. I liked the allusions to “Frankenstein” for that is what Vader’s story eventually becomes in the following trilogy: a search for his humanity, much like Mary Shelley’s creation.

I also didn’t have a problem with Vader’s reaction to the fact he’d caused Padme’s death. You have to remember that, despite the fact that he now has James Earl Jones’ booming voice, he’s still Anakin and still very young. It does sound odd, I admit, but it’s still completely in character. You also have to remember that Darth Vader will have a good 20 to 25 years to complete his transformation into the cold, remorseless killing machine we come to know and love in Episode IV.

In all, “Revenge of the Sith” does a terrific job of tying things together in a manner that harkens back to when I was a child watching Star Wars for the first time. It’s impossible, as an adult, to completely dismiss some of the flaws in the later films, but Episode III definitely comes close. It is a magnificent piece of escapist filmaking that has heart, soul, and character and I would highly recommend it to anyone, Star Wars fan or no, looking for a fun time at the movies.

I never really understood what was so great about the Star Wars movies when I was growing up. I was born after the originals were released, so I was never a part of that “culture” that Star Wars is. I saw them when I was around 13 or 14 and fell asleep before the end of all three. I never had the desire to really see them again until Phantom Menace came out. I didn’t see it in theaters, but I watched it, liked it, and waited for the next one to come out. I liked Episode II a lot better (I have to admit that half of that appreciation is because I love Haydn), but I still didn’t really “get” Star Wars. Well, I saw the triler for the third film, and I thought it looked really good. I also thought it was going to be sad, but I didn’t realize that I was going to cry all the way home from the movie theater! After the experience of seeing Episode III, I now finally understand what Star Wars is all about, and I love it! This movie perfectly ties the two trilogies together. It is so emotionally powerful. I know a lot of people say that George Lucas can’t write diologue and can’t direct anything but action scenes, but I completely disagree. Though some lines are a bit corny, each scene is treated with a tremendous amount of care and sets up your emotions so that you react to certain sad cercumstances (I’m sure you know what I’m refering to)in a very personal way. I have watched all three of the first series since seeing Episode III, and I appreciate them so much, because now I understand!
