br Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan’s last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie’s own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits IRumble in the Bronx/I and IRush Hour/I had sated American viewers and IWho Am I?/I wound up being sold directly to cable. It’s our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since IDrunken Master II/I. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a qust to discover his tru identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading “Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?”) and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts–including a flight down the side of the skyscraper–and fight choreography make IRush Hour/I look like a Sunday drive. br Inspired by the 1960s TV series that starred James Garner in the title role, this lightweight Western from 1994 proved to be a surprising box-office hit. Well, maybe not such a big surprise, since it’s from the star and director of the ILethal Weapon/I movies, and operates with a similar combination of mainstream plotting and easygoing humor. Mel Gibson stars as card-playing gunslinger Brett Maverick, who meets up with wily gambler Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) and a marshal named Zane Cooper (James Garner, trading his old role to Gibson) on his way to the World Series of poker in St. Louis. Maverick’s trying to raise the $5,000 needed to join the high-stakes contest, but that’s easier said than done du to a lot of unscrupulous competition and a twisting plot of tricks and deceptions. It’s all played for laughs and action, so the movie never wears out its welcome, despite a running time that could’ve used a good trimming. It’s also fun to see the rapport between Gibson and Garner, as if the present and former Mavericks were a kind of surrogate son and father, bonded by their mutual skill in charming and conning their way through tight spots. Director Richard Donner also pays tribute to old Westerns by casting veterans of the genre in cameo roles (including Bert Remsen, Dub Taylor, and Denver Pyle), and Gibson’s ILethal Weapon/I costar Danny Glover pops in for a surprise appearance. None of this really adds up to much since the movie makes no pretense about taking itself seriously, but that’s precisely why audiences found it so entertaining. I–Jeff Shannon/I

br When graphic novelist Aiden (Hugh Dancy) travels to Bucharest to research the loup garou legend, he nearly gets devoured in the latest female werewolf film, IBlood and Chocolate/I. In the tradition of IWerewolf Woman/I and IGinger Snaps, Blood and Chocolate/I stars Vivian Gandillon (Agnes Bruckner), a girl who’s forced to face her lupine tendencies in order to discover how capable of loving Aiden she really is. Based on a book by Annette Curtis Clause, the film chronicles the lives of the remaining loup garou who are an extended Romanian family waiting for their pack leader, Gabriel, to select his new mate. His desire for Vivian means trouble when her wish to be with Aiden results in her revealing too much about the clan’s secretive lifestyle. In this film, werewolves look fully human until their eyes glow with colored contact lenses while they fly through the air to then land as full-fledged wolves. Gone are the days, apparently, of films showing the transformation in all its hairy, explosive detail. A lack of scenes describing the werewolf metamorphosis make this film more a love story than a monster tale, though two forest gatherings in which the loup garou hunt human sacrifices offer some grizzly satisfaction. Unlike the aforementioned femme werewolf films, IBlood and Chocolate/I features a girl fighting her urge to kill in a bid to unite humans with her brethren, making this movie the most peaceful in its genre. With a tame wolf as protagonist, the potential nightmare is really just a pleasant dream to unite the two disparate worlds. The qustion is: Do we want that to happen? I–Trinie Dalton/I
