Now that John Ritter has passed (RIP) and no new episodes are being made, this series continues its trot to DVD. Lionsgate is handling the releases now, under the “Scholastic Clifford the Big Red Dog” banner.

“Growing Up With Clifford” contains the usual eight “Clifford” stories, with the them of learning about growing and handling responsibilities. The stories are “Blanket Blues,” “Food for Thought,” “When I Grow Up,” “Fishing Lessons,” “Dog for a Day,” “Nothing to Fur but Fur Itself,” “Another Fine Mess” and “Vaz Goes Down the Tubes.”

There are a couple of halfway decent special features. You get three “Speckle” stories and a feature that shows how to draw some of the characters, such as Clifford, Emily Elizabeth, T-Bone and Cleo.

In our home, Clifford is the sun, moon, and stars. Clifford is our dearest, closest, most bestest friend in the whole world. My daughter is two. She’s obsessed with the show. We (her parents) are ok with this because Clifford is actually watchable, as opposed to some other kid shows which are just insanely stupid. Clifford has good morals and some nice little characters, some not so nice characters who always learn their lesson in the end, some funny moments. This particular DVD comes with a bonus growth chart, so that’s nice. We have a lot of Clifford, this one seems to be her favorite right now.

The Mighty Ducks. Perhaps the best live-action series that has been put out by Disney to date. In this, the third movie in the series we see the Ducks receive scholarships to the prestigious Eden Hall Academy. At the same time, Coach Bombay has decided to move on and will be partaking in the Goodwill Games. In going to Eden Hall, the team acquires a new coach who is not as pleasant as Coach Bombay was. In fact, he could be best described as a nightmare. At the same time the Ducks bump heads with the championship varsity team. In the end the two square off in an excellent game of hockey. Leading up to the game, many of the typical hyjinks take place. Aside from the Ducks having their scholarhips on the line and other set-backs, the exchange of pranks between the two teams is simply classic. In the climatic third-period of the game the Ducks will have to prove why they are that quack-tastic. Will they do it?? I can’t say, but D3 is a movie you don’t want to miss. Disney has done it again with another great movie that anyone in the family can enjoy, so pick up today as you won’t be disappointed.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. THE PRANKS BOTH TEAMS PULLED WERE GREAT. THERE IS ALSO MORE OF A STORY LINE IN D3 THEN THE OTHER TWO. THE DUCKS ARE NUMBER ONE!

The new transfers for The Godfather Parts I and II are stunning. It really is like seeing them for the first time. All of the murky, faded colors have been restored to their original glory while still retaining the warmth of the film stock. Gordon Willis’ then-controversial cinematography can finally be seen they way it was intended on these new discs. If you have the original box set, it is worth it to double dip if only for the restoration job on these two films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset DVD! Click Here

Carried over from the original set are all of Francis Ford Coppola’s commentary tracks for the three films. On The Godfather one, he appropriately enough, starts off by talking about the film’s famous opening scene and how it was supposed to start with the wedding but a friend suggested he do something else. Coppola talks about how he organized the elaborate wedding sequence and shot it only 2-3 days! He talks about the pressure he was under by the studio and in read danger of being fired because they didn’t like what he was doing. This is pretty solid track that we’ve come to expect from the veteran filmmaker.

Coppola’s contributes another excellent commentary for The Godfather Part II. Initially, he had no interest in doing a sequel and dealing with studio bureaucracy. He suggested Martin Scorsese for the job. The studio balked at this idea and accepted all of Coppola’s terms. The veteran filmmaker talks at length about the development of the Corleone family from Part I. Coppola is engaging and very articulate, delivering a top notch track that is well worth a listen for any fan of this movie.

Finally, there is Coppola’s commentary for The Godfather Part III. One of the heated debates the filmmaker had with the studio was over Pacino’s hair. He wanted Michael to look older and like a man in crisis, while the studio didn’t want to mess with Pacino’s distinctive looks. Coppola defends his casting of Sofia and feels that she delivered a “real” performance because she wasn’t an actor. He also addresses the scathing criticism she received as in fact an attack on him. This is a solid track with good observations and analysis by Coppola — better than the film itself.

The rest of the supplemental material is spread out of two discs. Thankfully for those who did not buy the first box set all of the extras from it have been carried over with a whole other disc of brand new material.

The fourth disc features all the brand new material and starts off with “Godfather World,” which takes a look at how The Godfather films influenced popular culture, including parodies on The Simpsons and South Park, and how it informed the characters on The Sopranos. All kinds of celebrities, from William Friedkin and Alec Baldwin to author Sarah Vowell who sing its praises with clips of shows and films that reference it.

“The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” tells the story of how Hollywood had changed at the end of the 1960s with the demise of the studio moguls and the rise of the film brats, the first generation of film students who became filmmakers. One of them, Coppola, ended up being picked to direct The Godfather. This is an excellent look at how the director almost didn’t get the gig and why.

“…When the Shooting Stopped” examines the post-production phase of the first film. Coppola battled with the studio over the length of it. Executives initially did not like Nino Rota’s score for the film and samples of some of his original and revised cues are played.

“Emulsional Rescue: Revealing The Godfather” takes a look at the newly restored transfers for Part I and II and how they preserve Gordon Willis’ gorgeous cinematography. This featurette takes us through the restoration process, showing before and after examples.

“The Godfather on the Red Carpet” is a forgettable featurette shot during the premiere of Cloverfield with various minor celebrities gush about the films.

“Four Short Films on The Godfather” features celebs citing which one they prefer, Part I or II. Another one has Richard Belzer, and the man who adapted the films for the stage, quote their favourite lines, which turns out to be quite funny. The third one sees Coppola talk about his love of cannoli and how made it into the film. Finally, Coppola answers the question about what happened to Clemenza in Part II and why he died.

The fifth disc starts off with “A Look Inside,” a feature-length documentary about The Godfather trilogy done when Part III was being made. As a result, a lot of the major players were interviewed. We see Coppola at work on this film with on-set footage of the director working with Pacino. We also see Coppola working on the script with author Mario Puzo. The doc then goes back to the first film with Coppola’s battle with the studio over casting Brando, Pacino, et al. with fascinating vintage screen tests and rehearsal footage. This is an excellent extra that goes into great detail.

“On Location” revisits key locations in the lower east side of New York where they shot parts of all three films and how they transformed them into various historical periods.

“Francis Coppola’s Notebook” examines how he adapted Puzo’s book into the first film. Coppola shows us his notebook that he used as his master document that he would constantly refer to. This featurette provides fascinating insight into the man’s creative process.

“Music of The Godfather” features an audio excerpt of a conversation Coppola had with composer Nino Rota about the music for the film. Also included is footage of composer Carmine Coppola (Francis’ father) working on Part III. Francis talks about working with his father.

“Coppola and Puzo on Screenwriting” features the author talking about the origins of his novel while Coppola discusses adapting it with Puzo into the films.

“Gordon Willis on Cinematography” features the man talking his approach to the look of the film and the choices he made and why.

“Storyboards - Godfather Part II and Part III” allows you to see sketches for the look of both films and see how Coppola planned to shoot them.

“The Godfather: Behind the Scenes 1971″ is a vintage promotional featurette done at the time of the production of the first film. This is a fantastic snapshot of the times.

“The Filmmakers” are text biographies of key crew members.

Also included are 30 additional scenes from the four eras, spanning the entire trilogy. Much of this footage was inserted into the first two films when they were shown on television.

“The Family” gives you a handy organization chart for the Corleone family. You can see who everyone is and how they are related.

Finally, there are “Galleries” with trailers for all three films, stills, a collection of portraits of enemies of the Corleone family, and footage of the Academy Awards wins for the first two Godfather films.

This Review is based on The Standard DVD format Restoration, not The Blu-ray Version.

I’m on the fence about this New Restoration Box Set(The Restored GODFATHER III is a cleaner version), but I’m leaning towards an all-out PAN of this New Restoration. Unfortunately, I listened to some of the reviewers here and purchased this Set. (A couple of you owe me a few bucks.) It doesn’t look like any of the reviewers here did a side-by-side comparison test of The New Restoration and The Original Versions of these films on DVD. I did mine on a 50″ Panasonic plasma.

Yes, the New prints have fewer scratches, dirt, and grain than The Original Set, (which is not as bad as some reviewers suggest). But, the COLOR ENHANCEMENT of The New Restoration Set is OVERLY saturated in many parts. Especially, in the Red Scale. Yellows and orange flesh tones are extremely pronounced, overly brilliant, and unnatural looking in this Set. And it still contains scratches, dirt, and grain. Not as much as The Original Set, but it’s still there. A lot of the grain in certain frames has been removed, while other frames remain untouched and appear to be just as grainy as The Original Version. A very uneven transfer in my opinion.

In the opening shot of THE GODFATHER, the Undertaker is so overly saturated with yellow that as the camera pulls back to reveal Don Corleone’s desk, it renders The Undertaker almost out of focus. Trust me, this shot looks far better in The Original Set. Compare the shot in THE GODFATHER of Luca Brasi in his apartment, donning his bulletproof vest, in preparation for his meeting with Sollozzo. The colors in The Original Version look natural, while The Restoration renders Luca’s apartment in a blazing wash of bright sunshine yellow. These frames are entirely over-saturated with color. I assure you, certain frames of this Restoration DO NOT look anything like the Original film stock print. The warm and natural looking sepia tone of The Original film has been blasted away with digital color in many frames, almost making them look unreal.

THE GODFATHER II has been compressed onto one disc, while The Original Version was compressed onto 2 discs.

(By the way, I could care less about The TV Saga Version. It’s not the way these films were shot, and it’s not the way they were intended to be seen.)

Some frames of The New Restoration look very grainy, some look incredible, while other frames make these films appear as if Ted Turner Colorized them. At times, I wasn’t sure if I was watching THE GODFATHER, or SPEED RACER.

Is this version worth a Double Dip? I’m still on the fence about that. But, I think I prefer The Original Box Set over this half-baked attempt at improving this Classic with an over-saturation of color.

I get the feeling that The Blu-ray Version must look really odd. Blu-ray is great technology for newer films. Older films tend to suffer from over-saturation with this technology. The public is so enamoured with Blu-ray, they don’t realize some of the classic older films don’t resemble their original celluloid color exposures anymore. And that’s a shame. It’s going to take some more time before remastering technicians understand the remastering treatment that some of these classic older films deserve. Sometimes less is more.

If you must have The Restoration, turn the brightness and color way down on your TV.

I’m calling this THE GODFATHER: THE COPPOLA VIDEO GAME GIFTSET.

Act accordingly.

UPDATE:

There is no question that this Standard DVD Remastered Version is overly saturated with color. Here is a pretty SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT SOLUTION that seems to work quite well, reproduces truer color, and makes these Remastered films much more enjoyable. At least it did on my 50″ Panasonic Viera plasma. (I also use this for The Anniversary Remaster of SCARFACE which is also overly saturated with color.) Stay away from the VIVID and CINEMA Picture Settings. Use the STANDARD Picture Setting which will give you the following numbers: Picture 50, Brightness 50, Color 50, Tint 0, and Sharpness 75. Simply tune the COLOR setting down from 50 to 35. I found that changes to the other settings were not necessary. This should take care of the overly saturated playback color issue. I do not know whether this adjustment will work as well with an LCD, Projection, Tube TV, or Blu-Ray Disc.

When it comes to Euro Crime films The Big Racket comes at top of the game. Of course what can you expect from the great Euro Crime director Enzo G. Castellari and the ever likeable Fabio Testi.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Big Racket! Click Here

Testi plays a rough police officer that is getting sick and tired of the gang protection racket going on in a small Italian town. Gangs are using violence and destruction to get small business owners to pay. When Testi goes beyond the law to put the Racketeers away, he gets fired and then turns vigilante.

This is a violent, gritty film full of fantastic camera work and colorful anti-hero like characters. Testi here comes off looking like a true bad***. The uncut version provided here by Blue-Underground Entertainment does contain some harsh scences such as two brutal rape sequences so be forwarned.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Big Racket! Click Here

Coming from a seasoned Euro Crime fan…..you can’t get much better than this. There’s enough tough guy posturing, cool camera shots and action to make any fan of Italian cinema happy.

From the cover you’d think this flick was about Fabio Testi getting fed up with some noisy neighbors, but that’s not it. The “big racket” is one of those protection racket schemes where a bunch of weasley turds threaten store owners to pay dues or have their business trashed. Fabio’s a cop(of course) who’s been after these guys for awhile, but anybody that watches action flicks knows that trying to bring criminals to justice through legal means never works. Whenever Fabio thinks he’s got these guys, they manage to get off on some technicality or some other b.s. Once he starts using tactics that go outside the law, he’s fired of course. Once fired, he decides to go Bronson and assembles an A-Team-like group that consists of some of the racket’s past victims. One poor guy is a shop owner who was driven nearly insane by the rape and suicide of his daughter(A very good performance from this guy! His daughter looks 12!! Aren’t there laws about sex scenes involving minors?). Another unfortunate dude witnesses the rape and murder(by fire) of his wife coz he had killed a few of the racket members and they decide to retaliate. The last act of the film is the best where this group gets together and plans a big assault on the racket. For those familiar with these kinds of films(especially Castellari’s work), this one should be a treat. Not as good as Street Law, but much better than the Heroin Busters. Those used to Hollywood’s version of an action film will just think it’s dumb and cheesy. Fabio Testi is always a strong looking leading man, and able to carry a film even if he isn’t the best actor in the world. The film definitely has it’s corniness due to the year and country it was made in. One particularly funny scene is the last shot in the film that reminds me of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. After Fabio emerges victorious(and that’s not a spoiler. Like you didn’t know he would), for no particular reason he starts yelling and beating a car(at least I think it’s a car, you can’t quite tell coz of the camera angle) with the butt of his shotgun, and the film freezes on Fabio’s manic and comical facial expression as the credits begin to role. This is the stuff good flix are made of. Mindless crimefighting fun-Italian style!!

This is quite possibly the finest piece of stand-up comdey ever captured on film. Richard Pryor is at his absolute best, and the material is identifiable, thought provoking, and most of all, uproariously funny. The first fifteen or twenty minutes is an incredible outburst of energy, and will have the viewer laughing out loud almost non-stop. Pryor is great at turning everyday occurances into something everybody can laugh at, and even painful moments can transform into material. There are not enough words in the english language to adequately describe how funny this performance is, and I have personally seen it nearly 10 times. The language is strong, but this really does not diminish or distract from the material itself.

My only observation may be that the negative reviews have all been for the DVD copy, which evidently is not up to quality standards. This is certainly not the case with the video cassette version, and I can only recommend that this edition be purchased. All other reviews have been 5/5 stars, and the poor quality DVD edition should be taken off the market until it can be remastered.

While the past few decades have seen the emergence of tons of comedians who spit out swears and graphic subject matter with reckless abandon, precious few have taken offensive subject matter and turned it into something intelligent and entertaining at the same time. Denis Leary, Bill Hicks, and Dave Chappelle come to mind when I think of such a select group, but Richard Pryor may well have towered over them all. And 1979’s Richard Pryor: Live in Concert may have been his definitive document. This 90-minute standup DVD sees Pryor giving a manic, imaginative, deliriously profane performance that had the audience in the palm of his hand from beginning to end. A master impersonator with a vast pantheon of characters and voices, Pryor didn’t just talk about his subjects, he *became* them; he acted out every person, every story, and every idea to the fullest extent possible, constantly blurring the line between real and make-believe. Jokes about animals quickly gave way to spot-on imitations, whether of the inner thoughts of Dobermans or of his pet monkey’s illicit sexual activities. Pryor’s musings about racial differences in expressing grief were funny and insightful, but they were merely a setup for an outrageous recounting of his grandmother’s reaction to his cocaine habit. There are also plenty of brutally honest stories about Pryor’s life with his father, ranging from his father’s death in mid-coitus (”he came and went at the same time”), to the one time Pryor stood up to his old man (”It wasn’t really a fight, but I did the best I could”), and their time hunting together (”I hated being the dog”). Pryor’s honesty and insightfulness come out in plenty of other places too, from his troubles with the law to his heart attack to his less-than-stellar boxing career. All throughout, though, no matter what the subject, Pryor piles on joke after insight after impression with pitch-perfect timing and plenty of scatological language. For those of any age, race, or political leaning, this is a must-see.

If you prefer your horror the old-fashioned way with atmosphere, implication, and imagination versus explicit special effects, this is your kind of movie. Everyone already knows the tale, and everyone has already seen the movie. It is worth ownng though. It was made in the precode era when horror movies could still have a dash of the shocking. Plus movies were still learning to talk, so much experimentation could go on. The director of “The Mummy”, Karl Freund, had worked with Fritz Lang and so hints of German expressionism can be seen in this film as well. The year before, “Frankenstein” had made Boris Karloff a star at age 44. It is here Karloff gets to use the power of speech to add to his presence in horror films.

DISC 2

He Who Made Monsters: Life and Legacy of Jack Pierce**

Unraveling the Legacy of The Mummy**

Universal Horror Documentary**

**New Bonus Features not on previous releases.

Note that “Production Notes” and “Cast and Filmmakers” were bonus Features in the 2007 single disc release. “The Mummy Archives” was in the 2004 release “The Mummy: The Legacy Collection”. These may or may not be encompassed in the new release. Thus is the chaos that is the Universal Classic DVD department.

With these words, the viewer is once again seduced by Boris Karloff’s amazing ability to bring to life, so to speak, characters that have been long dead. By 1932, when “The Mummy” was released, Universal was the leading Hollywood horror studio. “The Mummy” was … ahem … one more nail in a very successful sarcophagus, providing Universal with more acclaim and Karloff with another notch in his already-outstanding cinematic resume.

Now released on DVD as part of the Universal Classic Monster Collection series, “The Mummy” reflects the rampant interest in America at the time in all things Egyptian, brought about mainly by the discovery of King Tut’s tomb by Howard Carter some 10 years prior. The supposed curse that was to have been visited upon anyone who disturbed the boy king was even worked into the script of “The Mummy” which was, originally, not an Egyptian movie at all but which was based on an historical Italian alchemist/hypnotist who claimed to have lived for centuries.

In the film, the mummy, Im-Ho-Tep (pronounced “M-Ho-Tep”) is accidentally revived after 3,700 years by a team of British archaeologists. He was once a priest, buried alive for attempting to revive the vestial virgin whom he loved following her sacrifice. Alive once more, and now calling himself Ardath Bey, he is looking for his lost love … and of course, he’ll need a living stand-in …

The “making-of” documentary included in “The Mummy”, entitled “Mummy Dearest: A Horror Tradition Unearthed”, is, like all the other documentaries in this series, a delight. One special feature of this particular documentary details the process used by make-up king Jack Pierce to turn Karloff - who in life was quite a handsome man - into a dried-out corpse. When one considers - both in the Frankenstein films and “The Mummy” - the physical rigors which Karloff endured to bring his gallery of monsters to life, this dedication to craft alone is truly amazing. From enduring layers of make-up often combined with foul-smelling chemicals, to wearing padded clothing weighing 30 pounds or more, to being wrapped in bandages and accidentally not given a fly through which the actor could relieve himself throughout the day, “Karloff The Uncanny” endured all and, as a result, gave us performances unmatched by any actor living today.

The double performance of Zita Johann as both the Egyptian princess and her modern-day character is nuanced and blends perfectly with Karloff’s measured emotion, which evokes a romantic aura in his character that makes him seem more sympathetic than evil.

Feature Commentary by film historian Paul Jensen provides a treasure chest of trivia for horror film buffs and Karloff devotees, as do the original trailers and cast and filmmaker’s biographies included in the DVD’s extra goodies.

Get lost in the world of “The Mummy” and you’ll never want to leave.

After reading many of the other Amazon.com reviews of the “Plan 9 From Outer Space” DVD, the consumer MUST be aware there are two different companies that are distributing this movie on DVD. The first is PASSPORT which, from all the other reviews seem to say, should be avoided. Apparently the company has their logo visible on screen the ENTIRE movie and featurette which follows. And they also don’t even include a chapter index. The other company which distributes this movie is IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT. This is the version I have and THIS is the DVD to get of “Plan 9″. (The cover of my version is the one Amazon.com has displayed in the picture above.) The picture quality is near perfect and the Dolby Digital Mono sound is excellent. And. . . .no annoying logo in the bottom corner of your screen. While the (seemingly) inferior PASSPORT version supposedly has a few interviews cobbled together from Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood” press junket, the IMAGE version includes a 111 minute documentary which includes some of the stars of Plan 9 (including Vampira) as well as cult horror directors Sam Raimi and Joe Dante! It’s two movies for the price of one! So unless you’re a die-hard Johnny Depp fan and NEED to have a couple of clips of him speaking, the IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT DVD is the absolute one to purchase. I believe Amazon.com offers both so just beware. And if you’re thinking of buying one from an on-line auction make sure you ask the person selling which version they have. I hope this helps.

Plan 9 is just as bad as everyone says it is (buy it buy it buy it!), so this review is just a reminder for you to purchase the better of the two DVDs that Amazon offers of this title.

Do NOT buy the Passport Video edition…it has horrible sound and the picture lighting throbs between dark and bright through the entire film. Passport Video also included a watermark of their logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that lasts throughout the film. In addition to all of this, what is advertised on the package as “Show 2: THE ED WOOD STORY” is in fact 40 mins. of cobbled together interviews with Vampira, Johnny Depp, Ed Wood’s wife, and one of Tor Johnson’s neighbors. Sounds okay, but they are actually mind-bogglingly uninsightful and focus mostly upon Tim Burton’s Ed Wood film.

The edition of this DVD that you will want to buy is the Image Entertainment version that includes the 111 min. documentary “Flying Saucers Over Hollywood” (which is a wonderful addition). This DVD has great sound and picture quality, vastly superior to Passport Video’s piddly excuse for a quality DVD.

I know that it may seem counter productive to buy a more expensive release of the worst movie of all time, but you will appreciate the horrible experience of grave robbers from outerspace much more (and Image Entertaiment’s documentary is great too).

Witness if you will the fourth (1968-1969) and final season of “The Wild Wild West”, still produced by Bruce Lansbury and that continues his updated and rugged treatment of the series with the paranoid political tales: “The Night of the Doomsday Formula” (guest starring Kevin McCarthy as the fanatical General Kroll) and “The Night of the Pistoleros” showing a future nations’ conflict triggered by Mexican look-alikes of American military officers.

You will meet James West’s new partners because Artemus Gordon is sent to Washington: secret agent/master of disguises Jeremy Pike (played by Charles Aidman) in four episodes (”The Night of the Camera”, “The Night of Miguelito’s Revenge” that is the last Dr. Loveless’ offering, “The Night of the Pelican”, “The Night of the Janus” that is Charles Aidman’s best performance as Baron Klaus Esterhauser and in which we catch a glimpse of James West’s training academy), secret agent/master of disguises Frank Harper (played by William Schallert) in the two parter “The Night of the Winged Terror”, and chemist/agent Ned Brown (played by Alan Hale Jr) in the gloomy “The Night of the Sabatini Death”.

Moreover, we will again foray into the off-centered and the macabre fantasies as the Hammer Productions-like “The Night of the Sedgewick Curse” dealing with the theme of the fountain of youth, the tribute to the classic “The Phantom of the Opera” in “The Night of the Diva” (Robert Conrad even sings “Buffalo Gals” with his friends Richard Cangey and Red West) and a veiled reference to Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles” in “The Night of the Bleak Island”, and two Jules Verne-oriented ones in “The Night of the Kraken” (which highlights a Captain Nemo type of character) and “The Night of the Winged Terror, Part I & II” (describing a secret organization of subversive mad scientists ruled by a hypercephalic mastermind).

One episode, directed in late season 3, depicts Robert Conrad’s tragic fall while performing his stunt: “The Night of the Fugitives” (guest starring Simon Oakland).

Well here we are, the final adventures of James T West and Artemus Gordon. Hard to believe the series only ran 4 years. Growing up in New York, the reruns ran aplenty during the 70s. Sadly though, series co-star Ross Martin didn’t get to appreciate the whole season as he was side lined by a heart attack. Replacing him was a young Charles Aidman as Jeremy Pike who was as good at his trade as Arte (you get the impression he learned from the master himself) and others including Alan (the Skipper) Hale, John Dehner and William Schallert (Carson Drew, Nils Baris, Martin Lane) in a 2 part episode. Their names got billed in the ending credits in the episodes they appeared in though Martin continued to appear in the opening credits for the remainder of the run. Martin would recover to be able to do the sequel films made in 1979 and 1980, Wild Wild West Revisited and More Wild Wild West which according to http://www.tvshowsondvd.com will sadly not be included in this set. Fortunately, they are shown often enough on Encore Westerns so you can copy them yourself uncut (the prerecorded VHS tapes I believe are copy protected). Martin passed away soon after making the sequel films, but I am sure if we looked up him up on the IMDB we would find a lot of good stuff under his name including a villain on Wonder Woman in 1977, and an attempt to bring Charlie Chan back just before or after More Wild Wild West. So get this last season, and appreciate 4 years of one of the shortest yet popular Western series of the 1960s.

I hesitate to write this review, since “Desk Set” is not merely my favorite Hepburn-Tracy movie, but also my favorite movie. Moreover, it includes my favorite scene in the movies, the “scene on the roof.” Hence, I ain’t objective. The roof scene, in which Tracy gives Hepburn what is essentially an I.Q. test, and Hepburn aces it, is not merely brilliant Tracy/Hepburn (told you I was biased), but a classic example of the jousting that occurs when a very smart guy meets a very smart woman. Inevitably — because this is Tracy and Hepburn — Richard Sumner admires and, eventually, falls madly in love with Bunny Watson, who dumps her long-time, self-centered, unappreciative boyfriend in order to marry him.

Everything about this film is delightful, from Tracy’s cautioning Hepburn, “Never assume!” before relating the famous “detective” problem (see title of this review), to the office jokes between the legal department and the librarians, the floating-island dessert, Tracy’s bongo drums, and the rousing climax in which, as the new library computer spews out all 87 verses of the poem, “Curfew,” instead of data about the island of Corfu (having been mis-programed by a female in god-forbid — a suit), Hepburn theatrically recites the poem, rounding off each verse with a resounding, “Curfew will not ring tonight!”

“Should Bunny Watson marry Richard Sumner?” Tracy types into his computer. “I thought that you said that it couldn’t evaluate?” asks Hepburn. “I programmed in the answer,” Tracy responds.

So have I. This is a great movie: it has humor, romance, intelligence and wit. Love it. Buy it. Most importantly — make the studio put it out in DVD.

There are many cinematic moments I cherish, but one of my favorites has to be Katharine Hepburn murdering “Night and Day” to Spencer Tracy’s bongo accompaniment in “Desk Set.” The movie–about the love and war between computer expert Tracy and TV-network fact-checker Hepburn when she fears Tracy is trying to replace her department with a massive 1950s electronic brain–is the purest froth. But it never puts a foot wrong, and retains the same inspired level of delicate amusement throughout its running length–no easy achievement with farce. (The movie’s “electronic brain” is in itself a hoot to behold for audiences in 2002!) In a way, “Desk Set” is an inversion of James Thurber’s great comic story “The Catbird Seat,” with the man instead of the woman as the efficiency expert and with love triumphing in the end (the latter a most un-Thurberish development). It’s redundant by now to praise Tracy and Hepburn, the smoothest old pros in cinematic history; suffice it to say that the superb supporting cast–including Gig Young, Joan Blondell, Dina Merrill, and the nameless old lady who dithers wordlessly through the action–is a match for them.
