The Apartment is an insightful movie made by one of cinema’s most talented directors. The plot is fairly simple, but C.C. Baxter’s (Jack Lemmon) is anything but. By innocently lending out his apartment to a coworker, Baxter’s residence becomes the love nest for his philandering colleagues. Along the way, Baxter develops a friendship with Fran Kubelik (Shirley Maclaine), one of several attractive female elevator operators. Baxter is rewarded for his generosity by getting promoted by Jeff D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray). Little does he realize that Fran is Sheldrake’s latest plaything. The Apartment has all that you expect from the best of Wilder: great performances, witty dialogue, and a plot that holds to this day, even if most of the depiction of the corporate office environment has changed dramatically (When was the last time you saw an elevator operator?). The three stars provide great characterizations, with MacMurray the real surprise here playing against type. This film is also notable for solidifying the Wilder/Lemmon team. With The Apartment, Lemmon was no longer playing second male leads or supporting roles. A worthwhile film that is still enjoyable today, but the DVD version leaves much to be desired. The picture quality is good, but the looping (the sound synchronization) is off and very distracting. Don’t know the reason for this, but considering this film’s place in cinema history, I would have thought it would have gotten the A treatment. The DVD is a disappointment.

This 1960 winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1960,touched our hearts and made us smile 43 years ago and still does today. It has not lost one bit of it’s charm and continues to add new fans all the time. It’s a treasure chest of great cinema moments, and a must own for collectors of classics, Billy Wilder or Jack Lemmon films.

Lemmon’s immense talent shines through as C.C. Baxter, one of thousands of office workers in a huge company who is quickly working his way to the top floor and the executive washroom. He’s got what it takes to get ahead…he’s a dedicated employee, and a hard worker, he’s got they key to success…and it opens the door to his apartment! It seems the powers that be on the upper floors have discovered this single guy’s bachelor pad and have badgered Baxter into letting them use it for their little extracurricular activities.

Things get complicated for C.C. though, when the big boss wants in on the action. He wants the apartment for his own use and now C.C. has a chance to go all the way to the top floor. But the rewards are bittersweet..Mr. Sheldrake’s girl turns out to be the very sweet elevator operator Miss Fran Kubelik. The very girl that C.C. adores himself.

The moments as we watch C.C. agonize over this dilemma are touchingly funny, and poignant. Lemmon is brillant in his portrayal as he is able to bring all these emotions to the screen. The rest of the cast is excellent as well. Shirley MacLaine(Fran) will touch your heart, Fred MacMurray(Sheldrake) is marvelous at his turn as the philandering exec(you’ll see him in a very different light from his “My Three Sons” role), and also look for such great notables as Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen, Joan Shawlee,Hope Holiday and the wonderful Edie Adams. Oscar also honored legendary director Billy Wlider for his work as director and another for screenplay along with I.A.L. Diamond. The music by Adolph Deutsch is as sweet as the story and will stay with you for quite some time after the view.

Overall the DVD was quite good. This 43 year old film looked pretty good. It could use a little improvement. There were times when it showed it’s age, but the black and white images were clear and bright for the most part. The sound is in Dolby Dig MONO!….”Some Like It Hot” made only 1 year prior to this one, has been enhanced with Dol Dig 5.1(on both DVD editions) and sounds great. The Special Edition of “SLIH”, even gives you the choice of watching it in the 5.1 or the original mono. This is a film that deserves at least the same attention. It may be veiwed in French and Spanish and has subtitles in those langauges as well. But..there are no subtitles or captions in English for hearing impaired viewers to enjoy this great classic and that is a shame. This is a film that should be enjoyed by all! MGM..maybe it’s time for a new edition of this treasure.

“That’s the way it crumbles….cookie-wise”(Shirley MacLaine to Fred MacMurray)…..enjoy…Laurie

If you are a fan of The Criterion Collection movies, you will love their first wave of Blu-Ray titles. Once again, the quality is top notch. I have been purchasing Criterion Collection movies since laserdisk started. They are known for their ” classic ” titles, super clean transfers and in depth extras.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Man Who Fell to Earth! Click Here

This great 70’s movie directed by Nicolas Roeg is a cult classic. Filled with surreal images, this title stands the test of time in the Sci-Fi genre. If you like straight forward Sci-Fi movies like Star Wars, this may not be for you. This movie is more along the lines of 2001 A Space Odyssey.

First off, the picture quality is awesome. Super clean transfer with no artifacts or blemishes to speak of. This title has been taken well care of. It is very sharp and clean. The colors are super vivid with great landscape shots. The skintones are spot on without that waxey look. The blacks are nice and deep, the whites are super clean without blooming. Alway’s in focus, with nice sharp backgrounds to give great depth. The closeups have very nice detail also. Though this film has that classic 70’s look and feel, it looks very fresh. I would give this film a 4 1/2 stars out of 5 for picture quality. You simply cant ask for anything more from Criterion on this title which is over 30 years old. Although the special effects are dated, you will enjoy this movie which is not dominated by CGI.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Man Who Fell to Earth! Click Here

Next…the audio is presented in 2.0 uncompressed stereo. Though the rear speakers do not get a ton of use. The sound is great. The voices are crisp and clean without any distractions of any kind. The subwoofer does not get much action either. But….this film is not Star Wars. Overall this title does the best it can with the source. Once again, awesome effort. A solid 4 to 4 1/2 stars on audio overall.

This title is presented in the 139 minute version. As it was intended.

Lots of extras on this disk: Audio commentary by Roeg, Bowie and Buck Henry. Interview with screenwriter Paul Mayersberg, video interviews with Rip Torn and Candy Clark, audio interviews, multiple galleries, costume sketches, behind the scenes photos, publicity stills, galleries of posters and lots of movie trailers. Plus a booklet with facts and photos.

Great movie…looking even better on Blu-Ray. This is a must have for the classic Sci-Fi lover. Great screenplay, great actors with very cool music to boot. Enjoy!

The Man Who Fell to Earth [… (DVD) ~ David Bowie

This movie is a must for any Bowie fan!! Uncut and in Blu-Ray is so fantasic. When I saw this back when released in the USA, it was so chopped up and edited !

Dellamorte Dellamore (Michele Soavi, 1994)

Soavi, who got his start as an assistant director to Italian horror god Dario Argento, spent his time making obscure B-movies until he stumbled upon Dellamorte Dellamore (Of Love and Death, but released in America under the title Cemetery Man), Giovanni Rimoli (Trauma)’s adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi’s novel of the same name (one of the highly-praised and popular Dylan Dog novels that have made Sclavi a household name in most countries that are not on this side of the Atlantic).

Set in Dylan Dog’s hometown of Buffalore, Dellamorte Dellamore is the story of Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett, who should need no introduction), the caretaker at a cemetery infected by a plague that causes the dead to come back to life seven days after being interred. Dellamorte (whose name translates as “St. Francis of the Dead”) takes it all in stride, keeping around a variety of inventive weapons with which to re-dispatch the dead. After all, all that gravedigging means a lot of overtime pay, right? Dellamorte’s sole companion in life is his sidekick, the seemingly mentally challenged Gnaghi (Francois Hadji-Lazaro, recently in Brotherhood of the Wolf, but probably best remembered for his unforgettable role in City of the Lost Children). Until, that is, he spies the most beautiful woman (Italian supermodel Anna Falchi) he’s ever seen at a funeral. Immediately, you know you’re not watching your everyday horror film; Dellamorte becomes a bumbling romantic-comedy film star around her. And yes, that’s what you’ve got here–a romantic comedy. With zombies.

The comedy/horror blend works extremely well, and in the process doesn’t keep the viewer from seeing that there’s a lot more underneath the hood than the surface would convey. (This is hinted at throughout, but becomes obvious in the final scene thanks to a startling trick Soavi hands us; watch closely, because you may not catch it unless you do. It’s brilliant.) Dellamorte and Gnaghi are complex characters on the surface, but there are clues throughout the movie as to their deeper motivations and understandings of the things going on around them. To me, this is living proof that Rupert Everett is a better romantic comedy lead than Hugh Grant, but that’s just me. (Hugh Grant hasn’t worked with zombies!)

Dellamorte Dellamore is one of those movies you can’t really believe was made in the nineties. Intelligent, beautifully-shot, low-budget horror/comedy that looks as if it came out of Dario Argento’s salad days (or out of Japan; there’s more than one aspect of this film that reminds me of the brilliant My Left Eye Sees Ghosts). I can’t recommend this wonderful film highly enough. Go as far out of your way as you need to to catch this one. **** ½

If you’re looking for geniuninely funny, creepy and beautiful horror film look no further.

Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore) tells the tale of unlucky in life cemetery watchman Francesco Dellamorte. Watching over the Buffalora cemetery is no easy task, particularly when the dead come back to life after seven days. And these are no ordinary zombies folks. The “Returners” truly embrace that at one with the earth bit that you hear some people saying they wish to be when they die. Perhaps if they see this movie first, they’ll think twice about that.

Poor Dellamorte can’t seem to get along with anyone, not his mentally slow assistant, Gnaghi, not the beautiful “She”, nor anyone in town. He even seems at odds with the old Grim Reaper himself.

The humor is decidely black and hilarious. Of the many times I’ve seen this movie since 1994, it gets funnier all the time. Rupert Everett is marvellous as Francesco, as is the teenage actress who portrays the Re-Animator-like zombie Valentina.

The FX are great, the zombies awesome. The plot chaotic and very fun. This has got to be the best horror film of its type this decade. A note: Some people may find the tone of the film a bit harsh toward women, (I don’t. Particularly when compared to most Italian/Spanish zombie/horror films).

This should have ushered in a new era of zombie films, but sadly did not.

Don’t miss this…

Erotic and Sexy

Amos Lassen

Strand Releasing’s “Don’t Look Down” explores sexual awakenings and imaginations as well as mysticism and spirituality. Eloy is nineteen and one night while sleepwalking, he falls through the roof of a beautiful woman, Elvira. She is an expert on the Kama Sutra and she shares her knowledge with Eloy.

Eliseo Subiela, the Argentine director, brings us a film that is charged with eroticism. This is a magical coming-of-age film that looks at sexual knowledge and how it relates to the mysteries of life and how it balances the spirit. Elvira is sex personified but she is also a respected woman and she is the wise one sexually.

The movie is a compilation from the tantric tradition, the Kama Sutra which is a manual for different sexual positions. The word “tantra” is Sanskrit and it means to explore, to spread and to manifest. In other words sex is a combination of different energies–thoughts, actions and physical matter. In tantric sex, lovemaking is prolonged so that the sexual union is perfect and harmonious. The sexual act changes from an act of doing to an act of being and becomes a spiritual as well as a physical experience.

“Don’t Look Down” is an attempt at translating tantric sex into terms that can be related by a movie. Eloy at 19 is something of a mystic as he feels the spirit of his recently dead father passing through him and also sees the dead residents at the cemetery near his home. He has a simple job–he walks the streets of Buenos Aires on stilts selling sandwiches. After his meeting with Elvira, he learns of her expertise of tantric sex and he begins to spend afternoons with her. He is made aware of the meeting of sexuality and mysticism and how to have sex without ejaculation. He discovers that he can travel out of his body and end up where he wants to.

We learn that Elvira is only visiting Buenos Aires and when she tells Eloy that she must leave to return to Barcelona, he finds it difficult to let her go. The two that have come together must now come apart but Eloy is the wiser.

I am not sure what constitutes eroticism as I found the movie to be very erotic and another reviewer said he found no eroticism and in fact he found the movie uninteresting. That is the beauty of good cinema–we are allowed to come to our own judgments.

This is a tender love story between a young 19 year old inexperienced boy Eloy and a wise 28 year old woman Elvira. Eloy’s father has died and he begins sleepwalking. His brother sets traps for him so that he will wake up and stop sleepwalking. Instead Eloy walks the roofs off buildings and eventually falls into Elvira’s bed through her open skylight. From there the whole sexual awakening and teaching happens. Eventually they fall deeply in love and the story ends happily ever after.

In a way, this sounds like a wonderful, sweet movie that most would enjoy. Sadly, it’s pretty far from what happens in the film. The viewer is treated to some pretty awful film techniques, needless slow motion, bad editing, over use of tracking shots, and just plain poor story telling.

To read the marketing description a person would think this is a treatise on the Kama Sutra and Tantric. It is so not that at all. Yes there are very very intimate scenes, these two lovers are very handsome without their clothes on. But an exploration of these two techniques? What we are treated to is a count down by Elvira. How many times can Eloy thrust before his nirvana? We see this scene played over and over again with Eloy becoming obsessed with that count - he has to reach 81! The pay off is him being mentally transported to a new city whenever he’s reached between 80 and 100. This is no joke, that’s exactly what is said in the film.

The film is supposed to have some mystic level. Eloy communicates with his dead father. He rides his bike through a cemetary every day and the dead line up doing hand motions to him, which, well, vaguely resemble the motion of self pleasuring. The Grandmother is some mystic able to see auras arounnd people. And Eloy and Elvira seem to have some mystic ESP connection. Frankly, it kind of all boils down to a pretext to see these two lovely people in bed. Of which there is roughly 1/3 of the film at this state, beautifully photographed.

The film is all about expectations. It is very far from a study of the Kama Sutra or the art of Tantra. Nobody will learn anything from what is in this film (there are many more infintitely more educational films than this one). If the viewer expects some elementary exploration of mystic ideas, a semi-sweet coming of age / love story, and doesn’t mind intimate movies then they may well love this film. It was a bit too sophomoric for me.

The film is not rated by the MPAA. It has an R rating in Canada. As noted, roughly 1/3 of the film is of two people naked, making love or talking about love making, with full frontal nudity. There are no views of penetration or a male losing his seed (to quote the film). There’s no violence. The infrequent use of strong language, mostly related to sexual acts in context.

The main atmosphere of the film reminds me of a theatre play. This piece is neither a typical high budget American movie nor a totally underground one.(but a hybrid one) As i indicated above, the director seems to focus on the characters’ personalities (like a theatre play) to give some personal messages to the viewer/observer. Whenever i watch the movie, i feel that i’m a doctor in a mental hospital and observing people. All the characters in the movie have some weaknesses in their personalities as it is in real life. And, in my opinion, the impressive presentation of the weaknesses of the different personalities is the underlying factor of the Heat’s above - average success. For example, the performance of Sylvia Miles was really haunting. Her acting made me play this DVD three times last week. This role matches her perfectly. i can say the same for other movie characters. it seems like all the people are acting themselves not the roles. Therefore, one can, easily, feel the voyeuristic delight of observing people’s daily private life (which is so trendy on today’s television programmes) while watching the Heat. As for the subject guy, Joe Dallesandro, in terms of acting, he brings no striking or notable performance to the movie. However, to me, again, i may say that he plays himself. He’s destined to act this role. Of course, there’s no need to say that he’s so young, beautiful and sexy in the HEAT. Being a fan of him can be only reason to watch this movie. However i should warn you that if your intent is to observe Joe’s body and sexuality, this movie may not give you enough of his flesh. So, you’d better try ‘The Flesh’ from the famous Paul Morrissey trilogy. As a bottom line, this is not a brilliant, first class, unforgettable or masterpiece movie example at all. However, if you are into theather play-like, low-budgeted, psychological/midnight(pre-sleep) genre movies featuring a beautiful, long-haired, sexy guy with a swimwear(not showing his flesh excessively), this one is definetly for you! PS: The DVD version of this movie contains an extra material about the intentionally chosen dialogues of a few movie characters taken from the movie sequences. So this helps us more to understand the characters’ personalities and their driving forces.

HEAT is a riot - aging game show hostess vies with lesbian daughter for the affections of sexually ambiguous has been TV cowboy. The lines are eminently quotable (”Do you want your son to grow up to be a lesbian??”) and the acting has elements that make cinema verite look like fantasyland. I know people (not ME, of course!) who’ve seen this thing 50, 60 times - and still can’t get enough.

I remember seeing Puff the Magic Dragon when I first started kindergarden and I must say, along with the entire Puff series, this video has had an impact on my life. This is a VERY strong and emotional video displaying and teaching honesty, trust, care, faith, belief, and determination; something the kids of today and tomorrow most definately need in their lives. Most kids videos of today don’t focus much on these characteristics anymore… you know… feelings. This is why I love this video so much. If you’ve seen it then you know what I’m talking about. Within the first few minutes of viewing, it “touches” you. Watching someone, a dragon named Puff, taking the time out to help someone else in desparate need, it’s beautiful. Everyone has felt down at some point in there lives and could have used a friend such as Puff.

There are three Puff cartoons on this DVD. They all teach valuable character traits - confidence/courage, honesty and imagination. I loved them as a child and my sons (4 & 7 years old) love the stories too. They do not get tired of watching this DVD. The songs are great - I catch myself singing along!

Anna Magnani perfectly portrays Tennessee Williams “Serafina DellaRosa”, the love lost heroine of his beautiful play. Her portrayal is completely touching and awe-inspiring. I recently shared this film with a very accomplished actor friend who had never seen it, and his reaction was “wow.” This is one of my all-time favorite films, and I consider Magnani’s performance, for which she rightfully won the Academy Award as best actress, to be one of the most beautiful ever filmed. She says more with her eyes then most actors could ever convey in a whole script.Filmed on location in old Key West, it is steeped in the sleepy, humid atmosphere of that wonderful place. Watch for the bar-fight scene, where Magnani walks in to confront her dead husbands mistress. You will spot the mustachioed Tennessee Williams at the bar. His long-time lover, Frank Merlo, to whom he dedicated the book version of this play, “To Frankie, In Return For Sicily”, is also in the fight scene. You can still visit Tennessee’s little house in Key West, though it is not on any tour nor open to the public, just ask the locals. You may see the little plaque “the Rose Tattoo”, on the gate.If you haven’t seen this film (or even if you have), sit on the floor with a glass of red wine & someone you love, and watch the beautiful Anna Magnani create magic from Tennessee Williams equally magical “love play to the world”, as he called it.

THE ROSE TATTOO is about an Italian widow (Anna Magnani) in the bayou country who grieves over the memory of her dead husband. She is courted by the village clown (Burt Lancaster) who tries to help her let go of her memories. The rose tattoo is significant because the deceased had one on his body.

Magnani is superb as the grieving Serafina Delle Rose. Lancaster manages to pull off his role as Alvaro Mongiacavallo mainly because of his enormous energy. However, it is difficult for me to take his impersonation of an idiosyncratic Italian American seriously.

The movie won Academy Awards in 1955 for Best Actress (Anna Magnani), Black and White Cinematography and Black and White Art Direction. Nominations were received for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Marisa Pavan), Black and White Costume Design and Editing and Scoring of a Dramatic Picture. The Oscar for Best Picture in that same year was given to MARTY.

THE ROSE TATTOO was adapted for the screen from a play by Tennessee Williams who served as the screenwriter for the film. It was shot on location in old Key West.

Actually, I’ll give “The Asphalt Jungle” four and a half stars, as it stands as one of the great “films noir”, and another triumph for director, John Huston. This is a gritty, realistic portrait of the big city’s dark “underbelly”, circa 1950, and some of the shady characters who are trying to survive in this tough environment.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Asphalt Jungle! Click Here

Most of the people we meet in “Jungle” are crooks, with different skills–there is even the obligatory “cop on the take”. A brainy crook named “Doc” ( Sam Jaffe, excellent as usual ) has just been released from jail, where he has clearly not been rehabilitated ! He has planned a big jewellery heist. Of course, he needs help to pull it off. With the assistance of the local bookie, “Cobby” ( sweaty, nervous Marc Lawrence ), he recruits an expert safe-cracker, “Louis” ( desperate Anthony Caruso ), a getaway driver, “Gus” ( cool-under-fire James Whitmore ) and, for muscle, a bitter, tough-as-nails hood, “Dix” (an unshaven Sterling Hayden, never better ). To bankroll the whole operation, our gang brings in a sleazy lawyer named Emmerich, played with smarmy elitism by Louis Calhern.

Of course, you know what can happen to “the best laid plans”. Unforeseen problems, accidents and the personal faults of the individuals involved cause Doc’s “perfect plan” to go off the rails. There is much more to the plot, not to mention some interesting sub-plots, but I don’t like to spoil movies for first-time viewers, so I will not reveal more of the story-line.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Asphalt Jungle! Click Here

I would like to mention a few other performances though that further contribute to a fine film. Jean Hagen plays “Doll”, Dix’s long-suffering girlfriend, a very different role to her ditzy, petulant “star” in “Singin’ in the Rain”–what a versatile actress ! John McIntire registers strongly as the Police Commissioner, a job obviously not for “nice guys” ! Brad Dexter has a few memorable scenes as a private eye.

Finally, Emmerich’s mistress, “Angela”, is played by a young actress just starting her career in movies–Marilyn Monroe. Her acting here may not be on a par with the other actors, but her glamour and charisma still leap off the screen.

The DVD exhibits a reasonable black and white picture, with some occasional wear–sound of course is mono. Extras include a trailer, a brief introduction by John Huston, optional comments by film scholar, Drew Casper, and even a few reminiscences by cast-member, James Whitmore ( his comments on Marilyn are interesting ).

Bottom line–if you like classic, hard-boiled film noir, “The Asphalt Jungle” rates with the best. You are in for 112 minutes of gripping entertainment. Recommended.

A very sad footnote, dated 16 February 2009–Mr. James Whitmore has passed away. This fine actor had a long career in film, television and in the theatre, where he displayed a remarkable talent in so many different roles.

When director John Huston was edged out of the production of The Killers, he was determined to create a landmark film that would define and embody professional crimminality. Huston exceeded his expectations. The Asphalt Jungle is the seminal “caper film” which inspired a host of similar pictures. Huston assembled a superb cast where each actor represented a character who possessed a special skill needed to complete a million dollar jewel heist. Sam Jaffe is Doc Reidenschneider-the mastermind, Anthony Caruso is Louie Ciavelli- the safe cracker, Marc Lawrence is Coby- the bookmaker who finances the operation, Sterling Hayden is Dix Handley- the enforcer, James Whitmore is Gus- the wheelman, and Louis Calhern is Emmerich- the corrupt attorney who acts as a fence. The characters, especially Doc, Louie, Dix, and Gus, are sketched with blatant realism. Each character is proud of their status and existence within the underworld. Their careers and reputations hinge on their acceptance by fellow professionals. Huston injects the virtues of trust, loyalty, and respect into their crimminal circle and simultaneously questions the code of honor among the rightousness. Emmerich sums up this dichotomy with a memorable line: “There’s nothing so different about them (crimminals). Crime is only a left-handed form of human endeavor.” Morality, an issue in most noir films becomes blurred as Emmerich and a graft accepting detective become viewed as figures more contemptable than the crimminals involved in the heist. Sterling Hayden as Dix delivers his most memorable performance. Dix is not just another tough henchman, but a troubled loner trying to …”wash this city dirt off me”. Huston allows viewers unabashed insight into each of his characters. Doc with his predilection for nubile young girls, Gus’s conscious awareness of his physical deformity, Louie’s familial responsibilities, and Emmerich’s moral disintegration add to the film’s realism. The Asphalt Jungle is one of the premier black and white films ever made. John Huston’s creative energy is evident in every line and scene. Truely American film making at its best.
