The toons in this set are not classics because they are so great, but rather because of the fact they are vintage toons from the golden age of animation of the 30’s and 40’s before studios started making the animation cheaper with less frames.

These same toons show up on several different collections so basically buy the one that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Jack Frost is an Ub Iwerks toon from 1934. Jack Frost arrives in the forest, painting the leaves on the trees and warning the animals to prepare for the winter. An inquisitive young grizzly bear decides he wants to see what the world looks like when everyone else is hibernating. When Old Man Winter catches him unawares, however, he needs Jack Frost’s help in getting back home to his warm bed.

Santa’s Surprise (1947) features the first appearance of Little Audrey. Little Audrey and some other kids stow away inside Santa’s sleigh. While Santa sleeps, the kids decide to give him a Christmas present of his own

“Somewhere in Dreamland” 1936 is a Fleischer studios toon. It’s the story of two poor children who are out collecting firewood when they pass by a toy store, market and finally a bakery. They drool over the wares in the bakery window but walk away before the owner can come out and present them with two cupcakes. The kids go home and eat a meager supper before going to bed. They both dream they are in dreamland, where everything is free–cookies, candy, cakes, popcorn and toys. When they wake up it’s all gone but the three merchants have stopped by to lay out a huge feast for them.

“Chrismas Comes But Once a year” Fleisher from 1936. A group of lonely kids are given broken toys, leaving these sad youngsters without a Merry Christmas. Professor Grampy, sees the unhappy kids. The brilliant inventor puts on his thinking cap to find a solution this problem. He heads into the orphanage and creates a series of homemade toys from kitchen utensils. Then he decorates the main room with soap chips, cotton and other items, creating a Santa suit from red cloth, stovepipes and a red bag. He rings a dinner bell and calls the kids in. The kids, seeing Grampy as Santa, rush in happily. They play with their new and better toys.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” Fleischer 1944. The Fleischer version of the classic tale.

“Hector’s hectic Life” Paramount 1948. On Christmas Eve, Prince the dog’s owner threatens to throw him out if he causes any more trouble. Just then, a basket arrives on the doorstep containing three puppies that look suspiciously like Prince. The puppies proceed to trash the house while Prince desperately tries to conceal the damage from his owner.

“Snow Foolin’” Paramount 1949 Singalong about the first day of winter, when all the animals go ice skating. It is December 21, and the animals in the forest must contend with a literal avalanche of snow. Winter is not all that bad, though. After donning their winter coats, they will be able to enjoy themselves skiing, skating on a frozen lake, and tossing snowballs. In just a few days, one and all will be singing “Jingle Bells.”

Wonderful collection for its historical value.

“Christmas Cartoon Classics” has the usual collection of old public-domain Christmas cartoons that we have come to expect on these various classic Christmas cartoon DVD compilations. This collection is in fact identical to the “Classic Christmas Cartoons” DVD released by Delta Music Incorporated.

Each of these cartoons are good fun, and true “classics.” The real standouts of the collection are the Fleischer Bros. cartoons, and Ub Iwerk’s spooky “Jack Frost.” Being from the 30’s and 40’s, several of them are depression-influenced, showing sad-eyed orphans and poor kids lusting for Christmas treats, and may contain a few stereotypes of an unpleasant nature, but nothing terribly shocking.

Definitely for lovers of old cartoons only, or very young children who don’t mind the different styles and slightly odd characters.

The DVD is of poor quality, which is expected for such ancient cartoons. Restoration takes money, and this collection of public domain prints is just to get them out there. Nothing fancy, but nice to have in any form.

The seven cartoons are:

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Max Fleischer, 1948)

Christmas Comes But Once a Year (Dave Fleischer, 1936)

Somewhere in Dreamland (Dave Fleischer, 1936)

Jack Frost (Ub Iwerks, 1934)

Santa’s Surprise (Seymour Kneitel, 1947)

Hector’s Hectic Life (Bill Tytla, 1948)

Snow Foolin’ (1949)

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an amazing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly dazzling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the story, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the price of the DVD alone, but there’s so much more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to keep even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a true Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to watch this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was just critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD set as a review of the new Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will notice, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

I just got the Blu-ray, and will have some comments on it at the end.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on). You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the purchase.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked good, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally dark and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t expect much enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever wrong. I stared with my jaw hanging open. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the original prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more amazing is the expansion of the tonal scale. Dark scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how beautiful the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine produce the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is obvious. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to reach out and stroke. You can see every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not much less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you view it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the original camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to see it this way.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even view it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too much work for a small improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles enjoy finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of original programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films?) There’s also a set of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone justify the higher price.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (interesting enough that you might want to watch it more than once), plus all the silent Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is well-known to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that bear little relation to the original book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and comic * — version is especially obnoxious, as it is little more than a vehicle for Semon’s brand of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more attractive than none, especially as the technology to make a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “kindly philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be happy”, or “The answer to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so much “kindly” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your own fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re lazy” homilies that grew out of the great opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I believe L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy tale in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the story. I believe Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals make a grueling journey to the Emerald City, then find the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “fake”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that delightful word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, love, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “moral” is simple — Love, wisdom, and courage are what we need to get through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ possess them, and all we need to do is express them.

“Is that right?”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the question you’ve been waiting for the answer to… Is the Blu-ray set worth the price?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000).

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (See the preceding review.) It was, and still is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is pretty darn good — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Note the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s lifeless legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can see (just about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you rush right out in a buying frenzy and get the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is good enough for an excellent picture on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t good enough for a _large_ HD display. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a good upconverter (not all do); and you don’t sit “on top of” the screen (as I do); you might see little difference between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you?), you will almost certainly prefer the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a piece of junk. The design shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a wretched transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been put on the DVD disk.

I will come back later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly watch large chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

The toy line known as Playmobil produced by Germany-based company Brandstatter Group has been a popular toyline in the United States and other countries since 1975. The toys have been one of the most innovative toylines for children as kids can buy toys based on modern jobs or athletes to pirates, knights, princesses and more.

An example of the popular playmobil toyline toys in the market

And to celebrate the popularity of the toyline, the first major DVD release titled “The Secret of Pirate Island” based on the toyline will be released under the playmobil interactive name.

In this DVD, the film revolves around a family which includes seven-year-old Jack and his older sister as they visit their grandparents. Of course, the area where their grandparents live leads to a portal where the children can experience adventures. In this latest release, the playmobil theme revolves around the pirate characters.

But in this case, using your remote control, the viewer can select which adventure to participate in. The decision can lead to an early ending to the film or a further continuation to the story. Of course, since this is a children’s DVD, even if a child choose a short ending, the child will get another chance to select the other ending or if they choose not to choose anything at all, the film will automatically select the longer, continuing version. But what’s so fun about this release is that there is 27 story combinations. So, for the most part, children will enjoy the chance to choose their storyline and possibly see the toy characters that they may be familiar with.

For parents, there are two versions that you can select on the menu. The interactive version of “The Secret of Pirate Island” which is more or less 90 minutes long depending on the combinations selected or “Captain Gruff’s Favorite Movie” minus the interactive combinations and the movie is about 50 minutes long.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“The Secret of Pirate Island” is a 3D CG film featuring vibrant colors and captures the toyline in CG format quite well. The kids looks like the toys and the hands are like the toys but they are animated to show expression and also designed to show the characters like it’s plastic counterparts. Granted, this is not a high-budget CG film, so don’t expect hyper-detailed backgrounds or environments but for the most part, the animation for this title is well-done. Video is featured via anamorphic widescreen at 1:78:1.

As for audio, the film is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Digital and French Dolby Surround. For those with home theaters, the film is front and center channel driven as the movie is dialogue and music-driven.

Subtitles are in English, French and Spanish.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“playmobile interactive - The Secret of Pirate Island” comes with only two special features:

* Pirate Sing-a-Long - (1:53) One of the songs used on the film featuring the band (on the pirate ship) performing a song with the lyrics ala karaoke sing along at the bottom.

* Previews - Previews for Sony Wonder releases

JUDGMENT CALL:

As a guy who grew up with playmobil toys and my son having quite a bit of a collection for himself, I found this DVD release to be quite wonderful.

The world of playmobil and the characters and the look of the characters is animated quite well and for parents looking for an interactive film, “The Secret of Pirate Island” was absolutely fantastic as there are many scenes that require the children to make a decision (there are 27 story combinations) and thus, works quite well for the child or for parents watching along with their children.

For families wondering if the film can be scary, not at all. The theme is adventure-based and there is a scene with an octopus, a mummy and skeletons but for the most part, it’s never scary at all. They are animated in a way to be not offending whatsoever. So, parents shouldn’t worry at all. It’s a family friendly film. My 6-year-old, wasn’t scared at any of the scenes and for the most part, he was really getting involved with the interactive segments.

If there is anything that I do recommend is that if you have a DVD player that has a remote that needs to be closely focused towards their player, have your child positioned in a way where the signal is clear, so he/she doesn’t complain about the remote not working correctly. The interactive version of the film does give adequate time to make a decision but it’s important that a child holds the remote correctly and that the remote has a clear signal.

For the playmobil collectors or parents wondering if the film is only pirate-themed, there are combinations that takes both Jack and Amelia to a medieval time or playing in their grandparents yard but those scenes are very short. The film is definitely pirate-themed and since I typically see the pirated-themed toys at the stores, I’m guessing it’s a big seller for playmobil but I do hope there are more playmobil interactive releases that reflect their other toylines, which would definitely be wonderful.

There’s really nothing bad I can say about this DVD, for parents who are looking for a children’s interactive film on DVD, this is one of the better ones that I have seen thus far. I wish there were interactive games included on the special features but overall, for its low price and what is included on this DVD, “playmobil interactive - The Secret of Pirate Island” is highly recommended!

Saw this in a Red box and noticed that it said “Interactive” so I got it for my son 3.5 yrs old. He was really excited to see it and had fun with the pirate theme. Even though the theme was pirates there was nothing too scary in there to make him nervous and the colors and animation were simple but not cheap.

It took him a bit to understand that when he watches it again it can change but once there he really got into it and was excited to try choosing which way to go. We do wish there was even more of the branching stories in the middle. My wife and I even got pulled into the branching story trying to figure out how many diverse paths were put on the DVD. We found ourselves trying to convince our boy to do a certain choice so WE could make sure we saw everything there. For him he just got really excited everytime a choice came up. He would scramble up off the couch standing in front of the TV and he didn’t care if he chose the same one again.

Good family fun. Hope there are more to come for all sorts of age levels.

Good work!

If good films are like waking dreams, then good horror films are like waking nightmares. Few can match the power of Phantasm in this regard. Masquerading as a B-shocker, it gradually develops a kind psychological depth shared only by the best in the genre - films like The Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs.

To begin with, the story is frankly outrageous: after the death of a close friend, two brothers (Mike and Jody, played by Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury) discover some strange things about the Morningside Funeral Home where their friend - and their parents, who died two years earlier - are interred. It seems the dour funeral director (a character known only as The Tall Man, indelibly rendered by Angus Scrimm) is not quite human. He’s able to lift fully occupied coffins by himself, as the younger Mike secretly observes; he bleeds yellow blood; he has a strange reaction to cold; and he is aided by small silver spheres that roam the halls of the mausoleum, doing unspeakably gruesome things to intruders. It seems his main activity, though, involves a novel use of the corpses of the dearly departed - a use we learn in the striking left-turn the film takes in the third act.

Somehow, what could have been a very silly film takes on an unnerving, Lynchian kind of surreality, thanks in large measure to a well-developed subtext about abandonment, isolation, despair, and guilt. These are the anxieties that drive nightmares, and - despite the frequent humor throughout - writer/director Don Coscerelli infuses the proceedings with a poignant sense of sadness and dread. Like Herzog’s Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht, or Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Phantasm isn’t just a scary film; it has the authentic texture of a dark, disturbing dream.

And this, in a film where a major sequence involves a large, obviously rubber insect flown around on a fishing line! It could have been a real Ed Wood moment, but instead, we buy into it somehow. Amazing.

In The Tall Man, Angus Scrimm has created a classic horror film villain, in the Frankenstein’s monster/Dracula/Wolfman/Mummy sense, rather in than the Freddy/Jason tradition. There is no sense of irony in his conception or performance. No camp. No winking, wisecracking, or self-aware irony. Just a powerful, implacable, evil presence.

Reggie Bannister rounds out the cast as a musician/ice cream vendor (!) who assists the brothers in their quest to rid the world (or at least their town) of the evil that has descended.

The performances (a couple of minor characters notwithstanding) are remarkably skilled, walking that fine line between believability and exaggeration virtually demanded by the genre.

The DVD is crisp and well produced. There is a delightful introduction by The Tall Man himself, Angus Scrimm, to get things rolling. There is a good deal of supplemental material to be found on the disc, and a thorough commentary track by Coscarelli, Scrimm, Baldwin, and Thornbury.

All told, an excellent addition to any horror fan’s collection.

“If this one doesn’t scare you, you’re already dead.” Or so goes one of the taglines used in the promotions for PHANTASM, the 1979 low-budget film from auteur Don Coscarelli that has become a much-loved horror classic. By today’s standards, the film doesn’t quite reach the level of fright promised by that slogan. But PHANTASM is nonetheless a well-made indie flick that has always been a real crowd-pleaser due to its enigmatic, unpredictable script; the ingenious and effective low-budget special FX; excellent directing and cinematography by Coscarelli; good acting, especially from the four principals; and a very memorable, haunting score.

PHANTASM follows precocious 13-year-old Michael (Michael Baldwin), his older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury), and friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister) as they investigate the enigmatic goings-on at the creepy nearby funeral parlor. Just who or what is that terrifying Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) that seems to have the run of the place? What is his part in the recent disappearance of corpses at the mortuary, and what is his relationship to the elfish eidolons lurking in the graveyard shadows?

PHANTASM’s script is loosely structured and rather weak in spots, but this actually heightens the unpredictability of the plot and thereby gives the film an unnerving surrealistic quality. And when combined with bizarre imagery (e.g., an airborne chromed sphere drilling into a human head); gloomy, atmospheric sets and on-location sites; and a genuinely creepy, inscrutable antagonist like the Tall Man, the movie transcends the script and evolves into a 90-minute spine-tingling nightmare-on-film.

The excellent musical score also adds much to the nightmarish quality of PHANTASM. Composed by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, it is stylistically reminiscent of John Carpenter’s score for his groundbreaking film HALLOWEEN, released a year earlier. But unlike Carpenter’s one-man synthesizer score, Myrow and Seagrave’s music is performed on multiple instruments, delivering a rich, three-dimensional sound that makes PHANTASM’s aural atmosphere seem much more ominous than that of HALLOWEEN.

Though it has been over 20 years since its initial release, PHANTASM has aged surprisingly well. As with its aforementioned predecessor HALLOWEEN, the gore is minimal, especially when compared to the wave of bloody horror films that splashed up on the cinematic shore in the 1980s and beyond. But the eerie, surreal ambiance of PHANTASM can still make a viewer’s skin crawl, and the malignant Tall Man, with all his accursed accoutrements and paranormal paraphernalia, is still pretty damned creepy. Yes, PHANTASM has a certain ineffable 1970s drive-in quality that identifies it as a product of its era, but rather than being an annoyance, this seems to add yet another layer of “otherworldliness”–at least from a contemporary standpoint.

MGM’s DVD release of PHANTASM offers the film in a non-anamorphic letterbox format in the film’s original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The digital transfer is pretty clean, with only moderate filmic and digital artifacts sometimes apparent. Colors are bright and vivid, though darks are a bit on the muddy side. Soundtrack audio options include a new Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound remix, which sounds good, or the film’s original 2.0 mono.

The supplements on MGM’s DVD release of PHANTASM are outstanding. First off, the disc comes packaged with a very nice booklet that contains a note from writer/director Don Coscarelli, as well as a myriad of interesting tidbits about the film and its stars. On the disc itself, a really cool alternate audio track offers a feature commentary with Coscarelli and the film’s principal actors. Also included are outtakes, deleted scenes, trailers and TV spots, TV interviews with Coscarelli and Angus Scrimm, and much more! These extras alone are worth the very reasonable retail price, but buyers get the cool film, too!

To recap, PHANTASM is a minor cult classic that both ardent horror fans and casual viewers alike will find genuinely enjoyable, and the loaded-with-extras DVD from MGM is nothing short of Phantastic!

This has to be the best sonic x saga dvd of them all so far

Because it is based off of the Sonic Adventure DX Director’s Cut and the

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle video games for nintendo gamecube.

This is probably the best US Sonic X release aside from the Metarex series. Covering Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast it stays pretty true to the games aside from the added characters so its great if you’re a fan. The original Japanese anime is obviously better due to the inclusion of “Live and Learn” (the latter game’s theme), but this’ll do until 4Kids releases an uncut, subtitled version like they’re working at on Youtube (support the 4Kids channel on Youtube!). Only thing that ticked me off a bit was the disc art. Shadow on disc 1 (Chaos Saga) and Eggman on disc 2 (Shadow Saga), switching main antagonists could be confusing. Overall great, but no extras.

R.O.D. (READ OR DIE) is quite an imaginative and delightful three-episode Japanese OAV (Original Animated Video) series that deftly mixes sci-fi, adventure, comedy, history and a love of rare books. Made in 2000, it’s set against a marvelously detailed background of urban settings like Tokyo, Washington DC, and New York, along with the massive Victorian-style (but secretly high-tech) British Library headquarters, as well as a diverse fleet of retro-style aircraft and seacraft. Overall, it offers the kind of fresh, unpredictable and literate entertainment that caters to the restless tastes of the more discriminating anime fans in America.

The heroine is a 20-something woman named Yomiko Readman, a shy, self-effacing bookworm who is a teacher and obsessive collector of rare books. She traipses about in a long skirt and overcoat, lugging a large briefcase behind her on a wheeled cart everywhere she goes, even when chasing super-villains. She’s also a secret agent known as “The Paper” who has the extraordinary power of turning any kind of paper product into a lethal weapon or protective barrier. One of the special thrills of this series is the way this talent is used so often to ingenious effect in the course of the three episodes. When the Library of Congress is attacked and robbed by a famous Japanese inventor cloned back to life, Yomiko is assigned by the British Library to retrieve the stolen books. The enemy is soon revealed to be much wider in scope and encompasses a host of other historical figures brought back to life, including a certain famed composer. World domination is not their aim but something much more sinister.

The plot is rather complex, but never wavers off track as the action moves from Tokyo to D.C. to New York (including a harrowing scene at a pre-9/11 World Trade Center) in the first episode alone, venturing to India in the second, and to a massive techno-fortress which rises out of the central Pacific Ocean in the third. The writing is consistently clever, the heroine relentlessly charming and the characters and multiple historical references always intriguing. There’s also an elaborate title sequence that’s the best seen in any anime since “Cowboy Bebop,” along with a jazzy early-’70s style-TV theme that gives it some added color. The release of all three episodes on one DVD is a welcome signal of the possible resurgence of the OAV format, which allows for limited-run series of various lengths like this one.

Read or Die is a breath of fresh air amid the anime releases in the United States: it manages to combine high quality on the technical side with interesting, likeable characters and an interesting story. First off, this is obviously a high-budget production: these three episodes (which is the complete Read or Die direct-to-video series) sport character designs which are attractive, animation which is top-notch, and great sound and music. Moreover, Manga, the studio releasing Read or Die in the US did a wonderful authoring job on the DVD, in contrast to some of their releases (e.g., Macross II). On the technical side, Read or Die simply screams quality.

Fortunately, that quality is matched by the quirky, likeable characters and the quirkier plot. The heroine, Yomiko Readman, is a book-obsessed woman with the power to manipulate paper (which is far more interesting than it may sound). She is also a secret agent for the British Library. When cloned historical figures try to steal her newest book purchase and destroy the world, she is assigned to stop them. Yomiko is the most interesting heroine of the last several years of anime releases: she is a woman, not a girl; she is not overly sexualized; she is capable and strong without pride or arrogance.

The only real flaw in Read or Die is that, because it’s only 3 episodes long, the weird little plot is somewhat opaque. Moreover, many of the historical figures will not be familiar to a US audience, but this is a quibble, really. The show is not about the villains or their purposes, it is about Yomiko and hers.

Adam and Jamie make a great team. Adam is funny and goofy, while Jamie is serious. They make the show so much fun to watch you don’t even realize you are learning something until it is to late.

This Blu has been screening nicely in the store as sadly no one got to see this with that joke of a theatrical release slate.

Plenty to dissect here regarding both the subtle and overlaying future of humanity themes, but in the end the positive outcomes shine through as does the awesome animation, both preserved beautifully on the Blu. This recent trend of 5.1 Uncompressed PCM on Blu is a nice change, and it bodes well for an action filled finale like this. The clarity, colors and style of animation look great here, and I bookmarked the last 17 minute battle scene for customers and that alone has sold itself. The supplements are a bit mismanaged and include:

* 4:45 minute making-of. Way too short for what this film took to make, and most of the other extras should have been spliced into this selection.

* 4 deleted scenes totaling 7 minutes. For what this film was they all should have been left in their respective sequences.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Battle for Terra! Click Here

* 25 second quip on a storyboard to final rendering analysis on one scene.

* 2:13 minute Animatics picture in picture clip. Shows the animation changes between production levels of the escape sequence.

* 20 slides containing text and and drawing notes of initial production design.

* Pulling the Strings, 1:26 minute low grade animation clip of the director stating his reasons for making this and other films and what he hopes to accomplish.

* Crew commentary, catered to the animation followers.

The menu is eye catching and plays with some decent music. The navigation is too extensive for younger viewers and could have been made much simpler regarding the supplements (combine everything next time). This gets a 5 rating for Lionsgate on a solid picture and sound product. A PG rating with maybe a few scary moments for really young viewers, but presentable to everyone, I think. Have not had any kids run screaming to mom yet while it plays here. Hope you enjoy.

This movie was great. It was the first 3-D movie I ever went and saw. Due to the horrible job done promoting this movie not many people even saw it. Which is fine because my friend and I had the whole theater to ourselves. A private screening at a public movie theater of one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Most people won’t like this movie because it makes us humans out to be the bad guys. The movie was great. Animation for being made with the money it was made for is excellent. The message great. If you are one of the ones who didn’t get to see this in theaters, which I’m sure most of you reading this are aside from a few scary moments which may disturb younger viewers this movie truly is a diamond in the rough.

This is a beautiful movie on a number of levels. As many reviewers have noted already the Italian cooking and the scenes in the kitchen will have you craving a fine Italian dinner as soon as you finish watching.
Beyond the food this is a fine film with a very touching story involving two immigrant brothers who are extremely close despite their obvious personality differences. The tension between the brothers builds as they attempt to salvage their struggling restaurant business. Primo (Tony Shalhoub)the older brother has an artistic temperment and that applies to his uncompromising approach to cooking and cuisine. His brother,Secondi(Staney Tucci), has more material ambitions and is manipulated by a competing restauratnt owner into an ill-advised attempt to publicise their restaurant by having an elaborate dinner party for singer Louie Prima. Hence the film revolves around preparations for THE BIG NIGHT.

The climax has the conflict between the brothers break out into the open and the film ends with a beautiful sequence in the kitchen where there is a silent reconcilliation.

The story is set in a New Jersey shore town in the 1950’s. The period is captured beautifully with big-finned Cadilacs cruising down the main street and the women’s fashions are right on the money. The soundtrack is absolutely fabulous with cuts from Rosemary Clooney, Louie Prima and some lesser known Italian recording artists.
Both Shalhoub and Tucci are excellent in thei roles and the supporting cast is very good as well.

Overall I highly reccomend both the film and the soundtrack.

Stanley Tucci, as actor, co-writer, and co-director (with Campbell Scott, who also plays a pitch-perfect small part as a car salesman), deserves a great deal of the credit for this small, intimate, delightful film. But the film resonates because it got so many of the little touches right, from the ensemble cast to the soundtrack to the editing to the cinematography. So there is a lot of credit to go around.

Tucci plays Secondo, the aptly named younger of two Italian brothers who have emigrated to New Jersey from the Old Country. Secondo is the entrepreneur, the guy who wants the big Cadillac. Primo (Tony Shahloub), the older brother, is the magician of a chef. Primo is so good, in fact, that his culinary masterpieces go over the heads of the good folks of New Jersey. When contemplating a wonderful seafood risotto, a diner complains that she can’t see the seafood, and that her desired side of spaghetti doesn’t come with meatballs (inspiring the wonderful line, “Sometimes spaghetti wants to be alone”).

Primo bemoans the fact that he is serving food to Philistines, but the sad fact is that most of the Philistines are eating across the street at Pascal’s restaurant. Pascal, played with great zest by Ian Holm, knows that you have to give the customer what he wants — even if it is culinary sacrilege. The contrasts between the restaurants, from the colors to the lighting to the clientele, could not be more staggering!

Secondo laments to Pascal of his financial woes, but refuses Pascal’s (repeated) offer to come work for him. Pascal, being a big-hearted guy, tells Secondo to pull of a “big night,” with no holds barred. Pascal will invite his good friend, Louis Prima, who will come, eat, and love Secondo’s restaurant. Then, the people will come.

So the story builds to the big night (a side plot regarding Secondo’s tortured love life notwithstanding), which is where the movie really takes off.

Organizing the banquet scene into courses, “Big Night” revels in the wonders that can only be brought about by great cooking. The cast has a difficult task — how do you emote rapture without going over the top? The ensemble cast, which includes Isabella Rosselini, Minnie Driver, and Allison Janney, nails this task just right. The cooking scenes are also hectic and impressive without going over the top, too.

Following the big night, many truths are revealed, perhaps because it is impossible to deceive after having such a wondrous experience. If this film doesn’t move you, or inspire you to get thee hence to an Italian restaurant, you have no heart!

But again, the heart of the movie is its dedication to the small touches. From Primo using his cup to tamp down his espresso grounds to the making of a simple omelet, this movie gets it all just right.

The DVD does not have much to offer as far as extras go. What it does have is one heck of little film.

Released at almost the same time as the awful “The Haunting” I wasn’t expecting much, but this movie delivers.

A terrifically creepy and nasty opening and the jolting modern day introduction set us up nicely. An able cast is brought to the haunted house where unspeakable things were done to mental patients who’s revenge we witnessed at the outset. Geoffrey Rush is great, doing a nice oily tribute to the inimitable Vincent Price (of the 50’s version of this story).

Great stuff follows with two plots unwinding simultaneously, the fake and the real “haunting”. The images of the good “doctor” appearing in the camcorder and on the surveillance cameras was terrific. I wish the whole movie could have sustained the chills generated by the “just-glimpsed-then-gone” evil and the hackle-raising stare and smile of these apparitions. And, of course Geoffrey Rush’s trip in the psychotic chamber is worth the price of admission alone.

Unfortunately, someone decided they could forego the sinister doctor and his minions and victims for a big CG finish that ISN’T scary and ISN’T creepy. And so the movie ends with a bang that is actually a whimper. Too bad, they were really on to something in the buildup prior to that. Could have been great.

But, the ending is only the ending, and the leadup to it has enough good stuff to make it worth a look.

In my hasty review that appears before this one, I truly misjudged the 1999 film “House on Haunted Hill,” pawning it off as a cheap teenage horror flick comparable to “The Rage: Carrie 2.” However, I was gravely mistaken, for this movie is full of all the elements that make a horror movie great. Based on the 1959 film of the same name starring Vincent Price, the 1999 version updates characters and storyline to suit modern audiences with lavish special effects and superbly filmed horror sequences. The film begins during the house’s years as a mental institution for the criminally insane, as Dr. Vannacutt is performing experiments on his patients as a way of eliminating them. The inmates soon take over the sanitarium, killing all but five members of the staff, who escape as the place burns down. Skip ahead to 1999, with Steven Price (Geoffrey Rush) honoring his wife Evelyn’s (Famke Janssen) wishes for a birthday party at the Vannacutt Psychiatric Sanitarium, newly remodeled into a residential home. When they arrive at the house, they discover that the guests are not the ones they invited, and both of them deny inviting the people present. The thrills begin when the “lockdown” occurs, a mechanism that encloses all windows, doors, and other means of exit, trapping Price and his guests inside. What truly makes this movie enjoyable is the fact that for the duration of the film, we do not know whether Price or the house itself is wreaking the havoc experienced by those left alive. Geoffrey Rush is terrific as Price, giving the original character, played by Vincent Price, his due justice. Famke Janssen gives sass and haughtiness to the script as Evelyn Price, and her stance and attitude make her character’s moves very unique and believable. Taye Diggs (Eddie Baker), Bridgette Wilson (Melissa Marr), Ali Larter (Sara Miller), Peter Gallagher (Donald Blackburn) and Chris Kattan (Watson Pritchett) are brilliant as the five guests invited to the bash, each one with their own style and ability. Sound effects, lighting and set design add creepiness and terror to the house itself, which never fails to scare its inhabitants. The ghostly apparitions seen by those in peril are fantasticly crafted, and increased camera speed and thundering noises set the tone for terror. The ending of this movie, while tying the plot together and giving the answers as an ending should, may come as a letdown to some. The special effects and CGI used to create the “smoke” that permeates throughout the house in search of its last victims isn’t authentic enough to scare people, and one might stop to think, “Why didn’t they just use real smoke altogether?” But the rest of this film is enough to make up for it end, and remains as one of the better creepy films of the horror genre. The DVD edition of the movie is a big plus, with a dual-layered widescreen format that hosts brilliant colors, solid blacks and natural fleshtones. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound is excellent, and if you have a Pro Logic receiver like I do, it still delivers room-shaking sound. Special features are all the craze, with a comparison of the old and new versions, trailers for both versions of the films, audio commentary by the director, deleted scenes (including a very funny sequence that hosts Debi Mazar as Sara’s boss), and interactive menus. Another winner from Warner Bros, and one of the better examples of movie remakes in this day and age.
