Featuring the remarkable animation of Ray Harryhausen and based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, this 1953 film has been re-released and should bring pleasure to Harryhausen fans and devotees of classic monster films. The best things about this movie are that the monster appears early and often, and that there are lots of interesting scenes, such as the fictional Rhedosaurus’s attacks on a lighthouse, New York City, and the Coney Island roller coaster. The acting and dramatic tension are only mediocre, but the creature is lots of fun.
DVD extras are brief but exciting — trailers for Harryhausen films currently being released on dvd; a 6-minute making-of featurette; and a terrific 17-minute conversation between Harryhausen and Bradbury, reminiscing on their friendship and careers.
The film can be heard in English or French, and subtitled in English, French or Spanish.
Special effects by the legendary Ray Harryhausen and a story by popular science fiction author Ray Bradburry… this was destined to become a sci-fi classic. This was the first, and probably best, in the long line of prehistoric monster movies that followed and became part of sci-fi film history in the process.
The plot begins as a nuclear scientist sees his partner killed by a giant, prehistoric creature while monitoring an atomic blast near the north pole. Naturally, nobody believes him until a paleontologist, played by Paula Raymond, helps him link several sea and beach disasters (I particularly enjoyed the attack made by the creature on a lighthouse) to the beast and prove there is a real monster on the loose. Finally, the animal surfaces at the NYC docks near Wall Street, destroying buildings, cars and people in his wake. After more mayhem and the discovery of a mysterious disease the animal carries which won’t permit it to be destroyed by conventional weapons, the creature meets it’s fate when it’s cornered within the old Coney Island rollercoaster.
This film is exceptional primarily due to the genius of Ray Harryhausen. His special effects in this film are outstanding, especially when you consider this film was made in 1953 on a budget that wouldn’t pay the cost of one days electric bill on most movie shoots these days. The scenes where the creature has been awakened by the arctic atomic test and his (or is it a her?) journey back to it’s prehistoric breeding grounds off the mouth of the Hudson River are superb. The intensity of the action never stops and has seldom been equalled. It begins with the opening scenes in the snowy arctic, continues with attacks on several fishing boats, the lighthouse and reaches a highlight when the creature comes ashore in New York City. We’re even treated to a live action fight between a shark and an octopus, at least until the beast appears looking for lunch! Also, the acting by the stories human characters is excellent as well. Most of the actors (like Kenneth Tobey) will be recoginzed from other classic horror/sci-fi films of the period.
If you’re looking for a real blast from the past and a movie considered by many (myself included) to be the best “prehistoric monster on the loose” flick ever made, you can’t go wrong with The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.

Being a fan of Gogol Bordello and seeing Eugene Hutz’s brilliant performance in his debut film of the compelling Everything Is Illuminated, I wanted to see what else he’s capable of on the screen, though I went in without high expectations. I think Madonna at the helm of this project instilled that hesitation in me. I found the acting good, and the story intriguing. Three roommates are trying to find their niche in society like we all are. What will they do to find what they are looking for? Most anything, and the audience follows along on their journey.
I was looking forward to this film, if for no other reason than to see what kind of job Madonna did on her directorial debut. What a jumbled mess. At least she still has her music career. I did laugh out loud at a few jokes, and thought Vicky McClure was adorable. However, Eugene Hutz’ accent was so thick in places that I had trouble understanding anything he said. As seems typical these days, it seems the film was trying to be more artsy than it actually is - or deserves to be.

First off, to answer the question of the previous reviewer; yes, this has all 3 episodes. It also has comentaries, both Japanese and English voice acting (and English subtitles of course), and an art gallery.

Cyber City Odeo is not the best anime out there, but for roughly $10, it’s more than worth it. During the time of it’s initial release, this small series certainly stood out among the droves of cliché filled anime out there. The animation/art style is traditional mid 80’s to early 90’s, with the it’s characters having more normal sized eyes, and the use of heavy blacks for shading being more prominent.
The writing certainly has problems in areas (like the dialog having a bit too much clichéd swearing about every 5 seconds), and the image quality hasn’t been enhanced at all fo the DVD (VHS quality, and no widescreen), but for all its faults, this is a great deal for an anime that certainly should be seen by any anime fan out there.
I am very pleased with the dvd I received and the timely manner in which the seller sent it. I received and was able to watch Cyber City in only 4 days from ordering it. Please pass my thank and let the seller know the dvd plays beautifully.

Doug Liman follows up Swingers with a very funny and well-written movie, with a fresh-faced cast. The story is enjoyably unpredictable, going back and forth in time, yet this is never confusing - quite the opposite, as you happily know that when something rather unexpected happens it will be explained later in the film. Katie Holmes is as appealing as ever, and the pairing of Jay Mohr and Scott Wolfe creates a very amusing partnership. The star is William Fichtner, who creates one of the oddest characters that I have seen for some time, as you can never quite work him out - but Desmond Askew is very annoying with his horrible ‘cockerney’ accent. Some of the lines are very sharp, and it’s nice to know that not all American teenagers spend their time worying about who’s going to take them to the prom. The extras on the DVD are extensive, with a wealth of very interesting deleted scenes (when there are two pages of them, you know that you’re onto a good thing) - including a very funny improvisation. The commentary is interesting if you can bear the two rather dull voices on it, and there’s a nice selection of music videos. The trailer’s suitably eclectic, mixing all types of music to the mad goings-on that are on the screen, and only the featurette is disappointing, being a short and useless ‘press-kit’ promo with nothing of substance. Altogether, a very nice package - Go and buy it. Sorry…
First thing I want to say is that THIS IS NOT A TEEN MOVIE. These are young adults doing young adult things-going to raves, experiencing the joys and not so many joys of being an adult. Definitely a slacker movie, and it has really no redeeming characters or morals, which is fun. The only things to learn is not to take too many Ecstacy pills and what not to do in the Champagne Room at a strip club (oh, and don’t eat the shrimp at a buffet).

We’ve had this DVD for 6 months and it is still my little one’s favorite. We have been living in the US for quite some time and since my baby was born I have been searching for a product just like this! Cuéntame un cuento has it all: beautiful catchy songs, native speakers, lovely short stories, plenty of new vocabulary (numbers 1 to 20, days of the week, fruits, clothing…)

In fact, Cuéntame un cuento seamlessly combines real Latin-American lullabies and songs with interesting and fun stories that my 18-month-old baby loves. It is really nice to see him interested in this DVD, it gives us plenty of ways to speak and have fun in our native Spanish language.
After many recommendations, on a trip to Mexico I bought the whole collection of DVDs by A LA VIBORA DE LA MAR for my grandaughter, as a means to encourage her Spanish…

What a wonderful gift it turned out to be!! The featured songs and poetry transported me back in time to my childhood in Mexico, and have certainly brought back many wonderful memories… As for my grandaughter (who is now 18 months old), she has been enjoying these DVDS for ten months now, and they are still her very favorite ones. She sings and dances to the beautiful songs… and is always walking from room to room whith the boxes of her DVDs under her arm.
We are all delighted to hear her sing the nusrey rhymes and try to say the poems and stories that form part of our Hispanic heritage. This is truly a small treasure.

Meryl Streep is firing on all cylinders in this brilliant portrayal (and movie) of Lindy Chamberlain. I can’t believe she didn’t get the Oscar for this one. Stripping away all possible mannerisms (twitchy eyes, flighty hands, dramatic pauses) and adopting a steeled gaze, Streep transforms herself into the most dislikable (and fascinating!) victim she has yet played. It’s almost as if the bones of her face have been replaced by iron. People alway remark about her accents, but the accent is always the least of her characterizations. Her ability to adopt the look and simply the BEING of her characters is unparalleled. This is really screen acting at its best. And this is a great film, too, for its observations into how an entire culture can become caught up in the guilt or innocence of one person they don’t even know (O.J., anyone?)
The story of the baby who was taken by a dingo was perhaps the most newsworthy of the 1980’s. I was at the time a master control operator at Channel Seven in Melbourne and on duty when the news of a missing baby at Ayres Rock in Central Australia came thru. I had the job of organizing the television signals from the Rock to our network in Melbourne.
It was quite a task and seeing the events unfold on the DVD, I again revisited my own part of the overall picture of history.
Further to this event, my 3 year old daughter [Nicolette] was eventually to play the role of Kahalia Chamberlain in Fred Schepschi’s film and appears in the final 3 scenes.
I still work in the TV/Film industry and occasionally look back at this excellent piece of dramatised history as a genuine piece of work, accurately played out and presented.
History proved the innocence of Lindy and the incompetence of our forensic work, however, hindsight is a wonderful thing

This is the worst train wreck of a movie i have seen!!!, Cinematic? NO, Crap? YES…Sean weathers, please do not ever again attempt making a film. Gore?, there was none, absolutley none!!! As for one reveiw, that everything was ” real ” I have no clue what movie they were watching, but it could not have been ” Lust for Vengence ” Seriously this movie lacked any and all fabric that holds a movie together. I tossed it after watching it and mumbled under my breath at the sheer lack of talent, production, filming, etc…etc…etc… It was my mistake to buy it, please don’t let it be yours!!! One last thing if you want this movie , like say, in reasonable time, you won’t be pleased! 0 stars for shipping
This film is so bad it’s not even bad/good……….it just stinks! It’s shot on video but that is not what hinders this terrible production. The acting is awful, the camerawork is more functional than creative or interesting, the locations are boring (along with the fim itself),the story is borderline retarded, and for selling itself off as a “giallo/gore” film there is little of either. Even the sex and nudity (which there is quite a bit of) is more of a turn off than a turn on. I can’t think of one thing I would recommend about this film. If you like cheesy shot-on-video gore/giallo type films, check out A Drop of Blood. It is light years ahead of this stinker!

The concept here is great: on the eve of his divorce, a father tells his daughter the story of how he fell in love with her mother by changing names so she has to guess who she is in the story. What’s so amazing is how they were able to pull off this story with three female leads all interacting with the same man, and yet somehow make us cheer each of them on in their own way. Ryan Reynolds is great in the lead, easily flowing from the caring father of the present to the stricken college student of the past and beyond. As the story unfolds, you’ll meet Emily, April, and Summer–three women who will have a dramatic impact on his life in various ways.

There are some genuinely funny moments in this film, and I honestly can say I never really got bored at any point. It was like watching three romances unfolds and ultimately fall apart for different reasons. No doubt you will find yourself choosing a favorite, and like Maya (the daughter), you’ll be hoping your favorite will turn out to be her mother. Be prepared to be surprised though.
As the movie drew closer to the end, I honestly thought I was going to be disappointed in how it ended. But the movie managed to end perfectly. Reynolds is a great actor who can be flippant and cocky one moment, then broken-hearted and in love during the next. Isla Fisher does a great job as April, the outgoing copy girl who works with him during the Bill Clinton campaign.

If you’re looking for a great romantic movie, this is the one.
In most romantic comedies, you have a story where boy meets girl, then boy loses girl, and finally boy and girl re-unite and live happily ever after (or v.v.).
“Definitely, Maybe” is definitely not your usual run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, and refreshingly so: taking a very different approach to the subject.
For starters, the storyline revolves around the relationship between a father (Ryan Reynolds, played by Will Hayes) and his daughter, Maya (played by Abigail Breslin). Throughout most of the film, Ryan’s romantic adventures (and misadventures) are potrayed as a series of flashbacks, as he relates the story of his life to his daughter in the form of a bedtime story.
Some of the dialog, particularly Maya’s lines, are hysterically, if not shockingly funny - such as a very clinical discussion she has with her father about procreation as he picks her up at school after a “sex ed” class: she asks, for instance, how a baby could be “mistake” after going through all that effort to try and make one. Later, she asks her father (after he relates his past relationships to her) “What’s the male word for ‘Slut’?” To which he sheepishly responds “They’re still working on that one.”
An interesting twist is that the father thinks he’s helping Maya to become more mature and sophisticated in her knowldge of the many emotional dimensions and complexities of adult relationsips. In fact, there’s more to it than that: as Maya’s dad tells the story of his relationships with three very different women: “Emily”, “Summer” and “April” to his daughter, you see him growing in maturity as he drifts from one relationship into another (and back again). You also begin to understand why his marriage to Maya’s mom failed (as is hinted at the start of the film): he’s the one who needed to grow up. A point emphasized when Maya explicitly tells him so.
Ultimately, this movie spoke to me about the importance of maturity in relationships, and about how Love doesn’t always come in the package (or place) you expect.
I give “Definitely, Maybe” four stars - not likely to get an Academy Award, but certainly a sweet, funny story with excellent performances.

If you or your friends have active children, they will love the way this series teaches. My friends children are mimicking and repeating the songs and dances and the letters perfectly and with understanding of the visual meanings, as well as some of the words. Very well produced product.
My 2 year old has a difficult time pronouncing Word World, but he sure knows what words are being spelled while watching the DVD. Great product to get an early start to reading. My son loves this.
