‘Trapped Ashes’ is a ‘horror’ anthology with each episode cut by a different director. There’s an awful lot of sex on show, but not much original, inventive horror, and the main reason for this is a limp and gawky script by the otherwise fabulously named Dennis Bartok.

You know Ken Russell’s segment isn’t going to be out and out gore, but a glance at his back-catalogue reveals the guy’s no stranger to extreme imagery, and as you’d expect, his piece is the most successful.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Trapped Ashes! Click Here

‘The Girl With The Gold Breasts’ makes the most of a weak conceit, and it’s to Russell’s great credit that he turns such an uneventful story into something so watch-able;

A wannabe Hollywood actress, undergoing a routine cosmetic procedure, receives vampire breasts. When she complains, we get to see Russell and two other old guys, dressed in very disturbing drag, eventually revealing they have splendid vampire breasts as well!

That’s it. It’s funny, quite bizarre, and you’re left scratching your head a bit afterwards.

‘TGWTGB’ shows Russell’s imagination is as warped and impish as ever, and an interview on the ’special features’ reveals him to be cheerfully demented.

The other three films are no-where near as solid. Sean S. Cunningham’s is a kind of live-action/Manga hybrid set around a Buddhist temple with plenty of sex as you’d expect, but not much chills.

Monte Hellman’s piece seems to be a thesis on why Kubrick left for Europe in the 60’s; his girlfriend was a witch apparently.

The final story by John Gaeta, an fx man, about a goth’s relationship with the tape-worm she was forced to share her mother’s belly with, has at least the embryo (apologgys droogies) of a good idea, but the climax is so obvious it falls straight off the screen.

Joe Dante does the linking story, and apart from a customary cameo by Dick Miller, it goes absolutely nowhere.

The ‘twist’ is the kind of post-modern nonsense that gets contributed to druggie art-school rag-mags. I’m all for wracking my brain if there’s payola at the crunch, but it just doesn’t happen. It’s no help that the acting is so sluggish and one-dimensional either, you don’t care if anyone dies or not.

Unfortunately, apart from Russell, it’s all a bit of a slider. Needs a much more subversive and troubled writer to get the best out of these guys.

3 stars for Lionsgate giving Ken Russell work and putting the British Film Industry to shame, but it’s a generous 3.

If you’re a fan of cinematic horror anthologies in the spirit of “Cat’s Eye,” “Trilogy of Terror” and “Asylum,” to name a few of the better crafted examples of this subgenre, you won’t be disappointed by “Trapped Ashes.”

To start, the title of the film itself evokes haunting memories of “Burnt Offerings,” so - gentle viewer - it should come as no spoiler to you that the four “guests” (including couples) compelled to tell the stories of their “WORST TRUE LIFE NIGTMARE” in order to escape from a Hollywood set-piece haunted house, as “hosted” by the always quirky but oddly avuncular “tour leader” Henry Gibson (best remembered for his memorable performance in Robert Altman’s “Nashville”), well … suffice to say that they are NOT going to be able to successfully “sing for their salvation” under ANY circumstances. They’re doomed from the moment they set foot in the old Norman-Bates-like “hotel.” In fact, they were doomed BEFORE they entered. But why? Clue: There is a karmic, cyclical element inherent in their collective damnation. But! No spoilers here, fans. Just watch! Carefully.

Each of the guests, to put it mildly, gives “bizarre” a whole new semantic, as evidenced by their “believe it or not” tales of ultra-steamy demonic sex, parasitic mammary implants, embryonic, alienated [and "twisted"] twin sisters, and true friendship sabotaged by nothing less than a modern-day succubus. What fun!

I was delighted to see directorial efforts from the always-over-the-top likes of veteran genius Ken Russell; steady-state solid work from the indelibly dependable horror maven Joe Dante; and most surprisingly of all (at least for this reviewer), I found director Sean Cunningham’s exploration (and exploitation) of “unconventional Oriental eroticism” to be the MOST fascinating and original of all five of the vignettes (the “wrap around” story included), a story so unique and so stimulating (in more ways than one), that you’ve never seen it before but you will WANT to see MORE of this “labor-of-love (and lust)” style of late-nite tale telling. “Jibaku” (which is Japanese for [loosely translated], “I sacrifice my own mortal life for you so that you will have to sacrifice, in turn, YOUR mortal life for me [with the implication being: Because it's the ONLY way we're going to be able to be together until the end of time!]“) is - at worst - a selfish love story with a horrific twist; at best, it’s a poignant tale of two terminally lonely people who “come together” (under extremely tenebrous circumstances), a respectably attractive American lady on vacation (with her less than sexually-fulfilling husband) and a handsome young Japanese “monk” tormented by the insanity-inducing life of a monastery, where eroticism of ANY kind is strictly verboten. I actually cried when I watched this particular vignette from the immensely talented Cunningham (a revelation considering he came from “Friday the 13th” roots), such was its overpowering haunting effects upon me. Kudos all around then, but especially to Sean Cunningham for his amazingly, global-minded exploration of “the inhuman condition,” no matter where in the world one happens to find themselves.

Without dragging this review out beyond the attention span of ANY potential viewer, just RENT (or buy) “Trapped Ashes” for a stormy night’s satisfying fulfillment of lust, bent love, greed, terror, suspence, a bit of the old “gross out,” but principally - five excellent pieces of macabre fiction suited for those who just can’t get enough of this kind of anthologized mesmerism. Catch “Trapped Ashes” if you can. It won’t give you nightmares fortunately (nobody wants those), but it will make you smile … crookedly, and leave you guessing as to the fate (and its raison d’etre) of the ill-fated “tour go(n)ers.”

Kudos to Henry Gibson as well, for acting as the “little bit too innocent looking” old man, leading the guests through a a house and a night they’ll never forget, nor ever seem to remember either, as they repeat it over and over and over again. But wait! Have I said too much already?

Stop me now before *I* become the next victim of a 6th vignette, and the FIFTH guest gory-story weaver in “Trapped Ashes.” Just See It, dear fans! Enough said.

Ice Age: The Big Chill was very good and entertaining. Just seen The Meltdown and was thoroughly entertained. Hollywood finally put something out that didn’t have a bunch of sex, blood and gore. Wonderful one liners and originality in this. The QUEEN did an outstanding job, and Ray just made it all the better. This would be one for the DVD Library for sure. Kids AND adults both had a great time. Thank you Hollywood for finally having something that was fun.

We went to see Ice Age 2 the day it came out, which generally guarantees an enthusiastic and rowdy crowd. Everyone there was laughing and clapping throughout.

Manny (Romano), Diego (Leary), and Syd (Leguizomo) are back. They’ve turned the heavily iced area into a camp for kids complete with ice slides and wading pools. But a vulture called Fast Tony (cameo by Jay Leno) warns everyone that the ice is melting and soon their valley will be flooded. So once again, everyone must migrate, fleeing to safer and higher ground. On the way, they meet 3 new friends: two opposums named Crash and Eddie (Sean Scott Williams and Josh Peck), and their “sister”- a mammoth named Ellie (Queen Latifah) who doesn’t know she’s a mammoth. Collectively, they continue on their migration. Syd and Diego try to convince Manny that Ellie can help him keep mammoths from going extinct, and a possible realtionship begins. But flood waters, horrid water creatures, and Ellie’s massive identity crisis stumble them a bit along they way. Syd finds respect and reassurance from a secret tribe of sloth’s that revere him as the “Fire God”. But it’s Scrat, everyone’s favorite neurotic squirrel, that’s the true star of this movie. My kids, and those all around us, laughed their heads off whenever Scrat’s crazy acorn antics were on screen. My [...] old asked me today, “Can we go see Ice Age 2 again?”. He didn’t even say that after seeing “Curious George”! Fun for the whole family.

I’ve seen this movie only once, and only a couple of days ago, but details are becoming vaguer and vaguer in my mind. This is never a good sign. It was watchable, definitely, and it generated a very strong, surreal atmosphere throughout the first half, but it fails to go anywhere terribly interesting, and gets increasingly dull as the film goes along. It’s still worth seeing if you’re a fan of Dario Argento, but if you aren’t there are a helluva lot of others films you need to see first.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Stendhal Syndrome! Click Here

The film stars Asia Argento as a detective on the track of a serial rapist/murderer, who becomes the victim said criminal shortly after she is succumbs to the Stendhal Syndrome.(i.e. a strong physical reaction to a piece of art. Fainting is the symptom in her case) There’s not much of a plot-arc here, as after the setup it is just sort of a portrait of her life, as she takes a turn for the nutty after her experience, and is again victimized by the still at-large killer. Much of the early film is quite compelling, as Asia lives in a world somewhere between reality in fantasy, where she walks in and out of paintings, accompanied by Ennio Morricone’s repetitive and haunting score. However, the more surreal aspects of the film are de-emphasized in the latter portions, and are, sadly, not replaced by increased plot development or action. And, even the effective earlier portions tends to be less effective than his Dario’s best work. My problem with the second half is probably heightened by the fact that I stumbled across what happens at the end of the film before actually viewing it. However, this is true of most of the Argento films I’ve seen, and none of the others have faultered in the latter portions to nearly the same extent. Beyond this, the hints as to the conclusion of the film are so incredibly blatant that I suspect most viewers will have no difficulty figuring it out long before the ending, though I certainly couldn’t say for certain.(I’m also perhaps a bit influenced some of the reviews I’ve read before hand, which said that it started pretty strong but got boring by the second half. But I kinda doubt this effected me too much. There just isn’t anything of interest going on in most of the second half of the film.)

Many people have talked about how disturbing the rape-scenes in this film are. Personally I’m not affected by them much. I guess this is because rape is, presumably, most disturbing and painful from a psychological standpoint, and I just can’t connect that way. But, lots of people are disturbed by them, so consider yourself warned. This is a different sort of thriller than most of Argento’s most famous work, so there is less of an emphasis on the horror set-piece. What this comes down to is that there aren’t any really effective horror or violence related scenes in the film. Most horribly, they use some absolutely hideous computer animation for some gore and other visual effects. If you can’t afford decent CGI, don’t use it, for God’s sake!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Stendhal Syndrome! Click Here

The acting is a mixed bag, as usual. Asia is acceptable, if not amazing, other than in the scenes where she is supposed to be ‘tough’ which she can’t pull of at all. The rapist is pretty good too, very creepy while still seeming more or less human. No one else in the film is worthy of particular mention.

As many have said, the DVD does look rather crappy, though it isn’t quite as bad as I’d imagined considering just how maligned it is.(It’s not far off, however) Still, if you’re expecting something like the various Anchor Bay releases of Dario Argento’s films your gonna be in for a nasty surprise.

Definitely subpar, but with enough effective aspects to make it worth checking out, it you’re into this sort of stuff.

THE STENDHAL SYNDROME

[La Sindrome di Stendhal]

(Italy - 1995)

Aspect ratio: 1.66:1

Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Digital

Quite unlike anything Dario Argento has directed before, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME is a grimly realistic portrait of a female police officer (Asia Argento, essentially miscast) whose encounters with a sadistic rapist/serial killer (Thomas Kretschmann) have devastating consequences. Though distinguished by some truly horrific violence, played straight by Argento with few of his trademark stylistic flourishes, the film is much too languid for its own good, wasting a lot of valuable time on an otherwise laudable attempt to depict the long-term consequences of a vicious sexual assault on the central character. Furthermore, the harsh subject matter allows no room for levity, and the austere scenario is at odds with the sumptuous artwork that acts as a catalyst for the murderous proceedings. Asia’s convulsive reactions to works of art (hence the ornate title) makes her a target for Kretschmann’s psychopathic killer, allowing Argento to fill the screen with paintings, sculptures and beautiful objet d’art, which offsets the film’s own lack of visual flair.

But there’s a fierce intelligence underpinning the somewhat predictable scenario: When Asia de-emphasizes her femininity in response to the initial attack, only to re-establish her womanhood after a second assault in which she emerges the victor (or does she?), it becomes easier to forgive the painfully obvious surprises which clog up the final quarter. Only one scene recalls the best of Argento’s work: A potential victim being stalked through a dimly lit room full of oversized marble statues, a brilliantly edited sequence which suggests everything and reveals nothing. Overall, “Stendhal” may not be vintage Argento, but it’s too clever and too unsettling to be easily dismissed, and it gets under the skin like no other horror film in recent memory. See it and make up your own mind.

This is a great movie. Like it was made yeserday. Punk, beat in sensibility. About young people struggling on the fringes.

Also the review that follows mine is right. A guy named Ray Carney just wrote an amazing book about the movie that has incredible behind the scenes details that no one ever knew before. Cassavetes revealed them to Carney before he died in a Rosebud conversation. Check out the book titled Shadows and another titled Cassavetes on Cassavetes along with the film. It’s available here if you type in Cassavetes’ name under books. Also Carney has a web site that you should check out with lots of other Cassavetes material.

I love this movie! And the books about it.

This intense, hysterical, loud, sweet and sour film was NOT an IMPROVISATION despite the end title! Neither were Cassavetes other films, in the classic sense of IMPROV. Improv was sparringly used in the writing of the scripts, but Cassavetes was a WRITER who knew what he was doing more than people give him credit for. This is a major crime against one of the greatest artists of the last 100 years (wha? no, seriously). To get the real scoop, and an exhaustive, loving take on this important first film by an American original, check out the BFI Film Series edition on SHADOWS, which just came out. It breaks it down and builds it back up, in a way you won’t believe.

Based on a true story, this film is not only entertaining, but as inspirational as they come; a paean to the indomitability of the human spirit in the face of the kind of adversity that would make most of us simply roll over and quit. It’s the story of the kind of challenges life can throw at anyone at random, and then follow up with yet another curve that seemingly takes it beyond the limits of human endurance. It’s a film that should be required viewing for anyone who has ever cried out that the world owes them a living, because the message of “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” directed by Steve Miner, is that “Life” isn’t fair, but when the worst happens you have to pick yourself up by the bootstraps and get on with it; nobody’s going to do it for you. It has something to do with a little thing called “pride,” and everything to do with the courage and tenacity it takes for someone to at least try to stand up when even the very hand of Fate seems bent on keeping them down. There’s a very definite lesson to be learned from this story; a lesson of which many living in the world today would be well advised to take note.

In 1932, the Great Depression is on, but times are even more trying for teenager Sonora Webster (Gabrielle Anwar), who after losing her parents is taken in by her aunt, only to be told that because of financial difficulties besetting her own family, Sonora must be given over to the state. Undaunted, the head-strong Sonora, even at such a tender age takes it upon herself to set the course of her own life. She packs a bag and runs off to answer an ad placed in the newspaper by a certain Doctor Carver (Cliff Robertson), a showman looking for able young ladies to train as “diving girls” for his show.

As part of a traveling circus, Doctor Carver currently has only one diving girl, Marie (Kathleen York); the act entails diving a horse off a forty foot tower into a pool of water. Carver is skeptical that the young Sonora can do it, but she is adamant and refuses to leave until he gives her a chance. And so he does; Carver hires her, but as a stable hand. What he doesn’t know is that he’s just hired a girl who refuses to give up on something once she’s set her mind to it, and when Sonora takes the job, it puts a hay fork in her hand, but her determined eye is on a horse, as well as that forty foot tower looming above that pool of water, beckoning to her, even as a dream borne on the wings of desire. And in her heart, Sonora knows that it won’t be long before she’s up there, herself. Up on the top of the world.

Working from a screenplay by Matt Williams and Oley Sassone, Miner delivers a poignant film that works at the heart strings, but at the same time circumvents any undo sentimentality. In light of the tragedy that befalls Sonora, this film could easily have played on sympathy and portrayed her as a victim of happenstance. But to be known as a victim would have been the last thing in the world the real Sonora Webster would have wanted; indeed, she took the lemons life handed her and made the proverbial lemonade, refusing to be a “victim” in any sense of the word. And that is the Sonora that Miner presents here, as he emphasizes the positive aspects of her life and what she accomplished, rather than dwelling upon the negative. It’s a story of pluck and determination, the message of which is delivered in a straightforward manner by Miner, without resorting to any superfluous action or melodrama to sell it. This is a story that the filmmakers were wise enough to recognize would stand on it’s own, without any attempt at dramatic enhancement. They have taken some license as far as certain dates and specific lengths of time involved, and certain elements are compacted in order to move the story along; but the important thing is, the essential elements of Sonora’s life and her incredible achievements are portrayed accurately.

Young Gabrielle Anwar gives a performance in which she perfectly captures Sonora’s spirit and the stubbornness that refused to allow her to give in to any and all of the obstacles life put in her path. Through Anwar’s portrayal, we see a girl who overcomes the most heartbreaking situations by always looking forward; a true individual who always sees the glass as half full rather than half empty, and it’s Anwar who makes that vital connection with the audience happen. It’s a solid performance, worthy of the character she so ably brings to the screen.

Cliff Robertson gives a memorable performance, as well, as Doctor Carver. He affects an outwardly ostentatious look and attitude that marks him as a true showman– he looks like Buffalo Bill in full regalia– but he indicates an individual of some complexity residing beneath it all. And there is a reserve to his performance that contradicts his appearance and effectively points up that intricacy of his nature. Most importantly, Robertson is convincing, and it makes the flamboyant Doctor Carver very real.

The one weakness of the film is in the performance of Michael Schoeffling as Al, Doctor Carver’s son. He has the chiseled features of a GQ model, and though his portrayal is passable, it lacks the depth that would’ve made it a bit more believable. He comes across as something of a “wooden” Matt Dillon, and while his performance does not necessarily detract from the film, neither does it add anything. It’s a minor consideration, though, that “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” manages to transcend quite effectively. In the end, this film is a thoroughly satisfying and emotional experience.

A great movie for horse-lovers of all ages. The main character, Sonora endures a number of life changing events that to the average person may seem exceptionally dramatic and difficult to overcome. Her strong will to have her dream even when it seemed impossible shows a great example to us all! Vic- tory only comes to those of us who are always willing to try one more time. Overall this video shows us good moral examples. There is no sex or violence to speak of. This is also a true story. It shows our children to have dreams and go after them. Have integrity, faith, hope, love through the bad times as well as the good. Above all, if you want something out of life be willing to work hard for it. Don’t let someone else steal your dream!

This is a great movie and a 1930’s classic! While the plot may be a bit complex to describe, it’s easy to get into and understand once the film starts. To make a long story short, a newspaper accidentally prints a false story involving an heiress (Myrna Loy) who then slaps the paper with a five million-dollar lawsuit. The editor of the paper (Spencer Tracy) concocts an elaborate scheme involving his fiancée (Jean Harlow) and former colleague (William Powell) in hopes of having the lawsuit dropped. Everything seems to go according to plan, but romantic entanglements soon abound and everything spins hilariously out of control. This is a great film that’s held neatly together with witty dialogue and fueled by the first rate performances of its lead stars Spencer Tracy, Myrna Loy, William Powell and Jean Harlow. Highly recommended!

Warner Brothers brought this great screwball comedy to DVD with much fanfare, but did absolutely nothing to clean or restore the battered print that has been used for the VHS for nearly 20 years. Frames are actually missing in some scenes, and scratches are evident throughout. The contrast in the original silver nitrate print was dazzling — this is fuzzy at best. I’m glad to see this film on DVD, but honestly, how hard would it have been to clean it up a bit?? The technology could have really made this old beauty shine.

I have always been a fan of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cartoons at a very young age. I have a lot of the episodes on tape and love to still watch them. I had heard that there were three non-animation movies out on the series but was never really compelled to see them. But the other day while at the video rental store, I decided to rent all three out. And what a surprise I got when I saw the first film for I actually enjoyed and loved watching it!

15 years have passed since a rat named Splinter (Kevin Clash) found four baby turtles in a puddle of ooze in the sewers. Because of the contact with the ooze, Splinter and the four turtles became mutants. Naming them after Renaissance artists, Leonardo (David Forman), Raphael (Josh Pais), Michaelangelo (Michelan Sisti), and Donatello (Leif Tilden), Splinter teaches them the ancient secret art of fighting. When the mysterious evil Shredder James Saito organizes the Foot Clan formed of young teenagers, causing the city to be in uproar because of vandalism. With the help of reporter April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) and former athlete Casey Jones (Elias Koteas), it’s up to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to save the day!

The movie has an interesting story-line if not extremely cheesy and corny but hey, that’s how the original cartoons were! In fact, I would have found the movie unlikable if it hadn’t contained some of the cartoon aspects of the original series. Also a lot of interesting facts are revealed like how Splinter’s past is related to Shredder and the beginnings of the turtles.

Comparing the movie to the series, I was a bit surprised to find that movie usually centers on the character of Raphael. His character is a bit different from the series, a bit more hot-tempered, impatient, and more of a loner. Leonardo is still the leader, Donatello doesn’t get much chance to work with gadgets and computers, and Michaelangelo… well… he’s still his usual likable self! April O’Neal is also working for Channel 3 news instead of Channel 6 News. The adding of Elias Koteas as Casey Jones was an interesting thread to insert for he was a fun and likable guy.

The martial arts and fighting were well choreographed and was enjoyable to watch. I especially liked the fight at April’s place, the end fight with the Foot, and the last fight with Shredder. The movie is also sprinkled from beginning to end with funny parts, quotable lines, and humor. Jim Henson should also get credit for doing an incredible job with the turtles and Splinter.

To sum of the movie, whether you are or aren’t a turtles fan, I highly recommend this movie! Lots of fun and great entertainment, it’s terrific for the family. The movie is rated PG because of some language, the fighting, and since it has some dark moments. I also recommend the next two “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movies. The second one, “The Secret of the Ooze” is my personal favorite of the three.

Back in about 1988, a phenomenon erupted. Nobody knew exactly what was so cool about this phenomenon, but every kid in the country had to have the figures, video games, board games, Halloween costumes, etc. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have unfortunately grown old, briefly resurrected by an unwelcome live-action Fox Kids television program a few years ago. But, oh, during the turtle hype… what a glorious time for kids it was. And when their first feature length film came out, kids dragged their parents to go see it. The kids (myself included) naturally loved the film. It was the hot topic during lunchtime in the school cafeteria. The Turtles were dominating EVERYTHING…

Ten years later, for me at least, the film is still as entertaining as ever. When I first saw it, I couldn’t have cared any less about the script or plot. I just wanted to see the four boys in action. Yet watching it now, I’m impressed at how well-made it actually is (the lighting, in particular). Is it technically five-star material? I think so. Some would disagree, but you simply can’t down a franchise that you grew up with. And you can’t expect a 40 year old movie critic to rave about the movie when he has no idea where it’s derived from.

What shocks me the most is how people talk about how bad the script is. I’m now 19 years old, and some parts of this movie had me cracking up. (”The only thing safe in the woods… would be the trees!”) And it’s not just the humor, either. The dramatic elements in the movie are much more tense and involving than they have any right to be.

The bottom line is that this film is VASTLY underrated. And people shouldn’t down it just because it was loved by millions of kids across the globe. If you ask me, children have the upper hand when it comes to watching a movie. They want nothing more than to be entertained, and are less demanding than adults are. Give the movie a shot and don’t be such a prude. If you’re expecting a “kiddie” movie sprinkled in abundance with watered-down action and stupid dialogue, then you’re in for a big suprise. This is one of the moodiest PG movies I’ve ever seen.

“I have always liked… ‘Cowabunga.’”

This TV series is excellent, the best thing on at present. Tim Roth brings superb acting skills to the complex character of Dr. Cal Lightman, an expert in lie detection, based on the research conducted by Paul Ekman, a renowned expert in the field of facial expressions and emotions. The Lightman Group is employed by various agencies to detect deception, whether it is in a life or death scenario finding trapped builders in a collapsing building, searching for kidnapped children or the nuances in romantic relationships. The series explains the science behind the concepts in an easy to understand manner in the first few episodes but doesn’t molly-coddle the audience, expecting them to keep up as the series picks up speed and dropping the details explanations. Excellent characterisation, good plot lines, great acting. This show is very good. I await the release of the DVD with a great deal of impatience and hope the following series lives up to the impact the first one made.

If you like your shows with a strong flavouring of intelligence this is definitely one for you.

This is one of the most unique shows to hit TV in a long time. “Lie to Me” defies so many trends and presents a fascinating show with no guns, no explosions, car chases or tiring cops/robbers drama, and delves into captivating psychology and stories loaded with twists and turns. You can’t look away from actor Tim Roth who dominates every scene. One of the best shows overall to hit TV. I was so happy to hear that it’s been renewed for a second season and can’t wait for the DVD release.

I’m such a big fan of the “Gunbuster” and “Diebuster” OAV series. The original 1988 OAV series is among my personal favorites and the newer 2003 series was pretty cool and nicely tied with the first OAV series and both featured cool storylines and a lot of action.

In 2006, GAINAX went to create two film versions, which are more or less a condensed to 2-hour film from the episodes of the OAV series. And to celebrate the 20th Year Anniversary of “GUNBUSTER” in 2008, Bandai Visual/Honneamise released the “GUNBUSTER vs. DIEBUSTER - Aim for the Top! The GATTAI! MOVIE” DVD Box set which I reviewed back in August.

But when it was announced that a Blu-ray version of the box set was being released in Japan which would feature interviews, footage from the movie premieres and interviews galore, Gunbuster fans were salivating over this release.

And now it is released in the US and how does it stack up against the original DVD box set? The only word I can think of, after I watched the Blu-ray Limited Edition box set was “beautiful”.

First, there is no difference in terms of the storyline of the films from the DVD box set and the Blu-ray box set BUT the quality differences is tremendous. Also, you get more for your money as the Blu-ray box set comes with special features, while the previous version came with nothing. But you did get postcards, booklets and a certification exam.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The first thing I noticed when watching “GUNBUSTER the Movie” is that for a digitally remastered film, the high-definition version looked clean and the colors are much more vibrant. I was literally in awe that this film created in the 1980s, looked so beautiful today in Blu-ray. The video is featured in 1080p High Definition and the majority of the film is in 4:3 but once you get to the final segment of the film (when it goes black and white), the film is presented in 16:9. But the video just looked phenomenal.

As for audio, you get Dolby TrueHD (5.1 ch surround) and if you thought Bandai Visual didn’t skimp on audio on their DVD releases, the same goes with the Blu-ray version.

It also helps that many of the original cast members returned back to re-record their lines and thus GAINAX and rework the audio for modern times. But all in all, “GUNBUSTER the Movie” looks and sounds incredible in this Blu-ray Box Set.

As for “DIEBUSTER the Movie”, since this film is only five years old, it’s a newer, digital film as opposed to the handdrawn original. But again, the colors are vibrant and everything looks quite beautiful in the Blu-ray release and the video is presented in 16:9 (1080p High Definition) and also the audio is featured in Dolby TrueHD (5.1ch Surround).

Also, I found the clarity of the special features on the bonus disc to be very cool. I mean, you can see the skin pores and makeup so much clearly on the Blu-ray disc. The majority of the bonus features are featured in 16:9 (1080i High Definition). Audio is presented in Linear PCM (2.0ch Stereo).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This is where the Blu-ray blows out the original DVD box set. The special features include:

* The GATTAI!!! Movie - Stage Appearance by Cast and Staff. This is a 31-minute portion where the staff of both films meet with the lucky fans who got to see the movie and the staff. This was pretty fun to watch as you learn how both staff admire each other especially DIEBUSTER actress Yukari Fukui (Nono) of Noriko Hidaka (Noriko), especially when it came to the Lightning Kick scenes.

* GUNBUSTER: Interview on Re-recording session - This 26 min. featurette was very cool as the seiyuu had the chance to talk about re-recording their lines or preparing for the role. It was cool to see the actual footage during the recording of the original “GUNBUSTER” film.

* From DIEBUSTER to THE GATTAI! Movie - This 30 min. featurette featured the DIEBUSTER staff talking about how they decided to make the DIEBUSTER OAV series to the movie and what they hoped to accomplish. Also, some insight to the characters and how Nono was based off of Yukari Fukui.

* The GATTAI!! Movie Trailer - A 2-minute trailer of both films

* WEB MESSAGE CAMPAIGN - This section is only available if you select the Japanese menu on the beginning of the disc. This allows you to hear A LOT of audio clips, in almost like a radio drama (short audio segments) featuring the characters of the film.

Also, included are the booklets of the two films and a fold-out informative print piece that is like a primer.

Of course, I’m very biased towards the OAV series because there was more time to focus on the character development. But with the series as a film and having to condense and pretty much eliminating certain episodes, you do miss a lot of the emotional storylines and watching how these heroines got from point A to to point B in becoming talented pilots.

But the overall goal of the film is accomplished by showcasing two cool storylines and fans of the original to the new fans of the anime series can definitely enjoy. As mentioned in my review for the films on the DVD box set, I saw this as an additional compliment to the OAV series.

But focusing on the Blu-ray Limited Edition of “The GATTAI!! Movie”, this literally blows away the regular DVD box set. Not only is the quality and audio much better but for fans that wanted interviews and any footage of the talent from the movie premieres or interviews with the staff, this box set has all that!

For me, just to see the original 80s staff was just remarkable and to hear and see Noriko Hidaka again was just awesome! So, for me, this is truly an awesome 20th Anniversary box set. Seeing the past and present on stage together was a sight to behold for fans of GUNBUSTER and DIEBUSTER but to see how lengthy the footage for each featurette was, this box set is pretty awesome! You definitely feel you get your money’s worth.

If you are a GUNBUSTER or DIEBUSTER fan, this limited edition Blu-ray disc box set is worth it! Highly recommended!

its a good series to see if you like mecha anime as i do. seeing it in bluray on my 120mhz lcd tv made a difference and loved every moment of it
