After producing such prominent films as iRocky/i and iRaging Bull/i, Irwin Winkler made his directorial debut with this 1991 drama, basing his screenplay on the harsh reality of the blacklisting era. Set during 1951, when the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) held hearings to target alleged Communist affiliations within the Hollywood filmmaking community, the film stars Robert De Niro as a prominent director who is urged to “name names” to appease the committee. Rather than betray one of his closest friends, he refuses to “cooperate” with the committee and is quickly blacklisted, his entire career in jeopardy. Costarring Annette Bening as the director’s sympathetic ex-wife, the film doesn’t pack the emotional punch of iThe Front/i (another blacklisting-era film, starring Woody Allen), but Winkler captures the paranoid anxiety of the period with a wealth of authentic detail. Because the De Niro character underestimates the power of the HUAC, we share his shock and dismay when he must finally face the committee. Without seeming like a dry history lesson, iGuilty by Suspicion/i illuminates the unconstitutional evil of the blacklist era while offering a glimpse behind the scenes of Hollywood’s past. Adding to the realism, director Martin Scorsese makes a rare cameo as another filmmaker under fire. Although Winkler’s script and direction are perhaps too melodramatic, iGuilty by Suspicion/i was clearly made with noble purpose and intention. More tolerant critics hailed it as one of the year’s best films, and that’s the opinion to believe for anyone who enjoys taut, intelligent political thrillers. For those too young to relate directly to the timeless urgency of the crisis that played out over 13 days in October 1962, IThirteen Days/I joins the classic TV treatment IThe Missiles of October/I (1973) as an intense and thought-provoking study of leadership under pressure.p The film (and costar-coproducer Kevin Costner) drew criticism for fictionally enhancing the White House role of presidential aide Kenneth O’Donnell, but while Costner’s Boston accent may be grating, his fine performance as O’Donnell offers expert witness to the crisis, its nerve-wracking escalation, and the efforts of John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) to negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia. While Soviet missiles approach operational status in Cuba, director Roger Donaldson (who directed Costner in INo Way Out/I) cuts to exciting U.S. Navy flights over the missile site, ramping up the tension that history itself provided. Donaldson’s occasional use of black and white is self-consciously distracting, and he’s further guilty of allowing a shrillness (along with repetitive, ominous shots of nuclear explosions) to invade the urgency of David Self’s screenplay. Still, as Hollywood history lessons go, IThirteen Days/I is riveting stuff. You may find yourself wondering what might happen if reality presented a repeat scenario under less intelligent leadership. As with his previous turkey, Murphy’s the least of this movie’s problems; his spitfire delivery begs for better plotting and dialogu, and his teaming with Owen Wilson had even more promise than Wilson’s IShanghai/I comedies with Jackie Chan. But this unfunny hash–bearing no resemblance to the 1960s Bill Cosby-Robert Culp TV series that inspired it–undermines Murphy and Wilson at every turn, stranding them in scenes that play well in isolation but never form a coherent action-comedy. It’s not that director Betty Thomas is incapable; she just seems uninterested, going through the motions while Eddie, Owen, and Famke Janssen play spy games in Budapest, chasing after a villain (Malcolm McDowell, wasted again) who’s stolen a sleek, invisibility-cloaked jet bomber called the Switchblade. Explosions, shootouts, double-crosses… ignore it all, and find what pleasure you can in Eddie and Owen’s aimless banter. Anna Moffo was an endearing Violetta, and her identification with the role is lovingly captured by director Mario Lanfranchi, who was her husband, with charming close-ups and detailed attention to her body language. Giuseppe Patane was one of the best Italian opera conductors of his generation, and he treats Verdi’s masterpiece with stylistic sensitivity allied to technical expertise. No surprise there: Webb co-created and produced IAdam-12/I as well (he also directed the first episode) and his sensibility–square, old-fashioned, low on frills– imbus the 26 episodes included in this set. p Martin Milner stars as Pete Malloy, a veteran cop whose new partner (following the death of the previous one) is Jim Reed (Kent McCord), a rookie who’s more than a little wet behind the ears. The show follows them as they make the rounds in their police black white, dealing with all manner of circumstances, from the mundane (traffic violations, petty domestic disputes, noise complaints) to the monstrous (murder, drugs, child abuse, suicide). Each about 25 minutes long, the episodes chronicle the quotidian vicissitudes of these men in uniform, as opposed to the detectives, forensic experts, lawyers, and such who populate today’s cop shows. Whatever the storyline, the tone is fairly tame, with none of the graphic violence common to later cop shows. And while the ‘65 Watts riots had already taken place, Rodney King, the Rampart scandal, and numerous other ugly events were far in the future. Thus IAdam-12/I evinces little or none of the now-vast divide (most of it racially based) that exists between the LAPD and much of the community; on this show, the cops are the good guys, without much nuance (which helps explain its popularity with real police officers). That’s certainly not all bad; IAdam-12/I’s realism (for its time) and lack of pretension are refreshing, and the show is looser and not nearly as humorless as IDragnet/I. The packaging is as basic as the show itself–there are no extras whatsoever, with two double-sided discs containing all 26 episodes. I–Sam Graham/I/p brbrbrOK.
