The somewhat absurd story centers around a super-powered military robot built for the FBI that gets hijacked by a nihilistic computer hacker, who hypnotizes a young cop into giving him access to the robot, forcing the other Gen-Y cops to arrest one of their own. The appeal of these characters is a weird mix of James Dean cool and Jerry Lewis slapstick–but the kung fu fights are high-energy and make up for the so-so special effects. Also featuring American actor Paul Rudd (ICluless/I, IThe Chateau/I) as an arrogant FBI agent. (Warning: Jackie Chan does not appear in this movie.) I–Bret Fetzer/I

Initially attracted to the lovely, lonely, ethereal angela (Emma Suarez), he finds himself drawn against his better nature–in the form of a guardian angel, a phantom double that watches over him like an aggressive but well-meaning conscience–to the earthy, passionate, impulsive Mari (Silke). Medem sets his tale of love and lust amidst the stunning, austere landscape of fiery red hills, a world both primal and alien (dressed in white protective suits, the fumigators look like astronauts on Mars). Like his earlier film IThe Red Squirrel/I (which also starred Gomez and Suarez), Medem winds multiple stories together with natural history and philosophical musings until it all melts together in a lovely and unexpected conclusion. If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!brbrbr Gregory Nava (IWhy Do Fools Fall In Love?/I) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star’s horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena’s inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issus (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez’s performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena’s killer–a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club–is considerably and oddly downplayed. I–Tom Keogh/I

Online!” border=”0″/abrbrbrbrIf you haven’t heard of Die, Monster, Die!, here’s a quick plot:brAmerican International Pictures production designer Daniel Haller donned the director’s jodhpurs for the studio’s second attempt at bringing horror master H.P. Lovecraft to drive-in audiences. The script, adapted from the author’s favorite story, “The Colour Out of Space,” by science fiction scribe Jerry Sohl (who later adapted another AIP/Lovecraft film, IThe Curse of the Crimson Altar/I), moves the location from rural New England to present-day Great Britain, where American Stephen Reinhart (Nick Adams) is visiting the ancestral home of his fiancee (Suzan Farmer from IDracula, Prince of Darkness/I). The girl’s father (Boris Karloff) demands his departure, warning of a curse by his warlock ancestor. Said curse is actually a radioactive meteor, which mutates not only the local flora and fauna (the “zoo from hell” sequnce, where Adams and Farmer encounter monstrous creatures in a greenhouse, is a campy/creepy highlight), but Farmer’s mother (Freda Jackson), and eventually Karloff, who becomes a glowing zombie before the house burns in typical AIP fashion. Like the studio’s previous effort, Roger Corman’s IThe Haunted Palace/I, the picture is Lovecraft-lite, toning down the story’s sense of unearthly horror in favor of standard-issu spook-show shenanigans. But Karloff’s presence, though infirm, lends to the adequately chilly atmosphere, as does Haller’s eye for dark-and-dreary art direction. Haller later directed another uneven Lovecraft film, IThe Dunwich Horror/I. MGM’s full-screen VHS (and widescreen DVD) print has aged gracefully, with only minor surface damage.
