My wife and I love Impressionism. We have several art books on the topic, and we saw the massive exhibit in Washington, D.C., in 1986 (from which we’re still recovering!), and a more recent one at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth.

BUT … we learned so much in this DVD set (which I gave to my wife as a Christmas present) that we had not read/learned anywhere else: there is a lot of information about the artists’ personal lives, family problems, quarrels with each other, their failing health and deaths, etc., that is almost as fascinating as the paintings themselves — which are simply LUMINOUS in this presentation.

The only disappointment is the limited “extras” and the limited number of paintings in the gallery extra — perhaps a reason to downrate this to 4 stars. But … I’ll keep it at 5.

A&E’s special on The Impressionists is Luminous. Principle writer and director Bruce Alfred illustrates the revolutionary, artistic impulses of a brilliant young group of painters who feverishly worked together to break the confines of 19th century traditional painting. Alfred fuses together the historical context of 19th century art Europe with delightfully animated biographies of the Impressionist artists.

I enjoy the movie or else I wouldn’t have ordered it. However the quality of the film was very poor. It was grainy and the sound was not good quality. I was disappointed.

Elizabeth Taylor has been quoted saying that this is the film that made her want 2 be more than a mere moviestar. It was the first time since Angela Vickers in A Place in the Sun, that she was proud of her work. She got rave reviews and both her talent and appearance is startling. I can`t remember seeing her so natural and good in any other picture. The film has been dogged by many critics and has suffered from little reputation. In my opinion however; THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS is the best Taylor, with A PLACE IN THE SUN, WHO`S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. Trivia: “a viewer from Oslo, Norway” is in fact me.

Calendar Girls is a sweet and uplifting British comedy based on a true story. Set in the picturesque village of Napely, we meet 50-something best friends Chris (Helen Miren) and Annie (Julie Walters). They belong to the local Women’s Institute, which is staid and traditional, and to them, boring and silly. (Their annual fund-raising event is selling a calendar with photos of jams and flowers.) When Annie’s beloved husband dies from cancer, some of the club members decide to raise money for a new sofa in the hospital waiting room by selling a calendar featuring themselves in the (gasp!) nude.

Helen Miren is great as the feisty and opinionated Chris, whose involvement alienates her family. Julie Walters is very likeable and sympathetic as the new widow. Ciaran Hinds, who has starred in many period films, has a small but good role as Chris’ husband.

Most of the movie is beautifully photographed in rural England and it is simply idyllic. This is in sharp contrast to the unsavory scenes filmed in Hollywood (when the ladies appear on The Tonight Show.) The story is heartwarming, but avoids being syrupy. The nude scenes are tastefully done, and played for laughs, as one would expect. The real calendar, by the way, has so far raised $1.6M for a new cancer hospital wing (and the new sofa). I heartily recommend this refreshing and well-made comedy.

The film is based on the true story of the women of the Rylstone Women’s Institute in North Yorkshire, England. Tired of having the same boring speakers (who delve into the fascinating world of rag rugs, or the different species of broccoli), member Annie (Julie Walters, “Billy Elliot”) asks her husband John, an avid horticulturist, to speak at the institute. John, however, is battling luekemia, and before he can do his speech, he passes away. Annie and longtime pal Chris (Helen Mirren of “Gosford Park”) decided to raise money to replace the hideously uncomfortable sofa in the relatives room of the hospital wing John was treated at. But another WI calendar featuring jams, flowers, or the countryside? That barely raised 75 pounds the previous year!

Something in John’s WI speech motivates Chris; “The flowers of Yorkshire are like the women of Yorkshire”, he wrote. “In each phase of their lives, they become more radiant”. This impowers Chris and Annie to recruit 10 more WI members to strip down to the buff and pose for a professional photographer. The pictures turn out great, but the girls face trouble when their local WI branch president wants to put a stop to what she feels is a scandalous idea. Chris and Annie have to fight the head WI counsel, and each other, as their popularity grows. They go from Yorkshire, to the Jay Leno show in L.A. (where they lounge by their hotel pool with Anthrax!), and back again. But the huge success of the calendar begins to distract Chris from her family responsibilities, and threatens to put up a hedge between her and Annie. Helen Mirren gives a wonderful performance, and is well deserving of the Golden Globe she has been nominated for. A film not to be missed. For those who whine about having to see women over 50 in the nude, you’ve missed the point. Personally, I think these women look pretty darn great for their age!

Option for Japanese with English subtitles, or to watch in English. I never use the subtitles while I’m watching in English, because they are different than what is being said-which drives me nuts-but the reason for this is because of who was translating. The translation for the spoken english is more accurate than the translation for the subtitles-for various reasons I won’t put here.

But I’ll have to wait and see if it has the 14 episodes it says it has because I just noticed that even though box 5 says it has 14, it only has 13 listed on its episode list (that nice little paper inside the boxes that tells you which episode is on which disc). I haven’t actually watched my whole box yet, so I don’t know if there are 14 or 13, but the list only lists 13.

But anyways, this box will cover the final rounds of the chunnin exam (starting with the fight between Sasuke and Gaara) which is interrupted when the village is attacked by the sound ninja and the sand ninja. While the Hokage is locked in battle with Orochimaru, Sasuke takes off after Gaara and the two other sand ninja with him, to stop them from using Gaara as their ultimate weapon in destroying the village. Naruto, Sakura, and Shikamaru go after Sasuke, trying to reach him in time to save him fromt eh danger he is in.

OMG I AM SO MAD!!!(in a good way) I CANT BELIEVE THEY LEFT US HANGING IN THERE FINISHING THE LAST EPISODE THAT WAY!!!!!!!!!!! I CANT SAY TOO MUCH BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE IT!!! as usual Naruto leaves you breathless but this time more than ever! not just us but his companions tooo! In that box set there is a lot troubles happening…

I found personally the whole box set a bit slower than the other ones. Let should say that it starts with Sasuke and Gaara facing their challenge,to the ambush of the hidden leaf village(which is a bit long), and the running around the forest…but the end is sooooooo worth it!

The scenery alone is reason enough to see this movie. The little girl that plays Jessica is a wonderful actress, and I was sorry not to see her in anything after this movie. This is a nice alternative to the sometimes sappy, jello mold movies that tend to come out around the holidays. It is a truly unique story that has been loved in my family since it came out, 8 or so years ago!

Prancer is the story of a little girl named Jessie and her love for an injured reindeer whom she believes is Santa’s reindeer Prancer. It is a lovely story of faith and love. Jessie has recently lost her mother, and now she and her brother and father are alone. Because crops are failing, her father decides she is to go live with her Aunt Sarah, but Jessie doesn’t want that. She proves to her father and everyone around her that she is needed at home with her brother and dad, not with her Aunt Sarah. She further proves the bond between people in a small town and how they stand up for each other in a time of crisis.

Her favorite story is the story of a little girl named Virginia, a true life child who wrote a letter to Santa Claus, and the letter wound up in the hands of a newspaper editor. She wanted to prove there really was a Santa Claus and the newspaper editor said, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus…” This true life story happened around 1900. So when Jessie goes to visit the “helping” Santa Claus at the mall, she tells him to deliver a letter to the “real” Santa, that she has Prancer and that she wants to meet Santa up on a cliff so that Prancer can be reunited with Santa. This letter finds ITS way to a newspaper editor, and before long the entire town knows about this loveable reindeer.

This is a video for children ages 2 to 102, and I give this movie 5 stars for being so entertaining and wonderful, and for bringing tears to my eyes every one of the 100 or more times I’ve seen it.

I first saw this version of “Dracula” on PBS back in the 70’s (shortly after having read the novel) and thought it a wondererful (albeit a little stiff) and very faithful film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic gothic novel. Of course there have been hundreds of films featuring Count Dracula down through the ages but very few of them adhered closely to the orignal source material. In fact most of them just borrowed a few key characters and maybe a plot thread or two and then just created their own story. Thankfully the BBC decided to rectify matters by filming their own adaptation for television and this is the first film that I am aware of that really does stay true to the novel. In fact this was the first film to show many of the famous scenes from the novel that previous films had ignored. Namely the scenes of Dracula crawling down the castle walls and a very controversial (at the time) scene where the Count offers a baby to his three vampire brides.

Now keep in mind this is 70’s era BBC televsision. While the acting is quite good some of the other production values are not going to be of the same quality that many of today’s viewing audiences are used to. For example many of the exterior scenes are filmed outdoors while the interior scenes are filmed on sets. Consequently there is going to be some sequences with a certain stagey quality to them. Some of the special effects shots are going to be…well, lets just say not all that special. Now having said all that I still can tell you that there are more chills to be had from this version than the BBC’s most recent and very disapointing adaptation of “Dracula”. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that this version is even better than Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”. I never really cared for Coppola’s version anyway but I will give it high marks for production values. One of the big mistakes with Coppola’s film was the changing of Dracula’s character from Stoker’s concept of evil vampire to that of a silly, romantic love-struck vampire. Louis Jourdan (Gigi, Octopussy) does a fine job as the Count despite the fact that he is one of the few things in the film that doesn’t quite mesh with Stoker’s original concept. He does however convey very well that strange dichotomy of vampires. Namely the sensual yet evil qualities we’ve come to expect from many other screen Dracula’s.

To sum up: this film may be cheap in the production values department but if you are looking for a version that is faithful to Stoker’s original story, character and concepts then you are on the right track with this offering from 70’s era BBC. There’s lots of atmosphere and plenty of good chills to be had from this version despite the shortcomings it may have.

especially the scene where Harker looks out of his castle window and see’s Dracula clinging to the walls.

Louis Jourdan breathes new life into the titular character.

(With just the right air of a European nobleman, polite, curteous but with an arrogant streak).

This was the first time I’d seen the delightful Judy Bowker on TV since Black Beauty.

The ever reliable Frank Finlay plays a wonderful Van Helsing.

(His 1971 Casanova is worth a look too.)

And Jack Shepherd really excels as Renfield.

If you have never read the novel, then this is the most accurate version I have ever seen.

Bram Stokers characters and prose are faithfully transferred to the small screen.

Production values are typically BBC late 70’s videotape, but it’s the story and acting quality I buy for,

and not a slightly dodgy TV stage set!

Released this fall, the “Christmas Story” collector’s edition is really a 20th anniversary version of the classic. First, let me say I can’t believe it’s been out for 20 years. I thought 12, at the most 15. Wow.

Briefly, for readers who may not be intimately acquainted with the film, I strongly encourage you to purchase “A Christmas Story” and make it a regular part of your holiday routine. It will grow on you with each viewing and you’ll soon find its one-liners making their way into your everyday vernacular. Which version should you get? That’s why you’re reading this review.

The original DVD release of “A Christmas Story” had no extra features. Nothing. No commentaries, no interviews, no documentaries. Just the movie. This was greatly disappointing, since I’m a big fan and was interested in the making of the film, what the actors are doing now, etc. So naturally I was looking forward to this special edition.

Well, I can’t say I’m too satisfied with the reissue.

1. The documentary is very uninformative. The one positive aspect of it is the simple fun of seeing the actors all grown up. Ralphie is 30 now, but looks about the same. Flick has changed more in his appearance and his career choices. (Career choices? You’ll have to look that up yourself. It’s not on the DVD and I’m not about to ruin Christmas for you.) There just isn’t that much to glean about the movie from the special features. If you would like to know what Ralphie wanted for Christmas when he was 10, or what the worst Christmas present Schwartz ever got was, then you’ll likely be absorbed. I wasn’t. What could’ve been an in-depth look at the making of this low-budget masterpiece, intermingled with musings from the actors turned into a Nickelodeon-style “what’s your favorite color” type of Q&A session. What was particularly annoying was the graphics and sound effects that the editors added (e.g., if Ralphie says “my mom put her foot down,” there’s a big crashing sound with a monolithic stone foot superimposed over him. Just stupid). Bottom line, it’s good for the serious fan who wants a peek at the grown up kids, but beyond that it’s useless.

2. The other “special features” are even more lame. There’s a trivia challenge (yawn), a decoder game where you match the dialogue from the scene, a history of the daisy rider BB gun, and the original radio readings from Jean Shepherd (the narrator). You might do these once, but it’s nothing worth buying the DVD for.

3. The one bright spot is the commentary, and if there’s a reason to buy the special edition, it’s this. The director (Bob Clark) and Ralphie (Peter Billingsly) do provide some more insight into the making of the film, and if you’re the type that enjoys commentaries, you’ll find it’s worth it.

4. Lastly, I don’t think the film was restored in any way. We’re talking 20 years here. The film was pretty marked up and I was disappointed they didn’t go to any effort to fix it in the 20th anniversary edition. For those of you that don’t know (and don’t worry, I’ll spare you the 1000 word treatise on the mechanics of film that another reviewer felt the need to share), artists go into the original film and frame by frame they remove specks of dust and dirt, and in some cases they even add paint to touch up obvious artifacts. This apparently didn’t occur in “A Christmas Story” and it badly needed it. This would’ve gone a long way to help the value of this DVD set.

So what’s the bottom line? If you intensely love this movie and have for years, then buy the DVD. It will be worth it. But if you’re on the fence, maybe you’ve already got the first issue of the DVD, maybe you throw it in during the holidays, then save your money. And if you’re just getting into the movie and don’t yet own a copy, well, you should probably get the reissue since we’re only talking about a few dollars in price difference.

This review applies mostly to readers who already have the first release and are considering getting the new version. If the features I mentioned appeal to you, then go for it. Otherwise, you might be better off just sticking with the original release and using your 20 bucks to get the “Christmas Vacation” reissue, which actually is worth it.

This is a must-see, completely charming, wonderfully acted (and I usually don’t like child actors), heart-warming without being too mushy, Holiday Season story.

But they made the DVD in Pan&Scan (except the opening credits, which are in widescreen). SHAME ON THE DVD PRODUCER!

The whole idea of DVDs was that there’s ample space for both widescreen and pan&scan versions. P&S (now called “Full Screen Format” — to make you think it’s a good thing) makes movies look like made-for-tv shows, with no vistas and too many closeups.

How about an un-modified version of this terrific movie?

Folks may gripe about Argento’s output over the last decade or so, but he certainly hasn’t lost the knack for a good concept. I don’t expect another Deep Red or Tenebre, and why should I? With a ton of great movies under your belt over more than 30 years, not everything is gonna be primo.

Do You Like Hitchcock? is a little murder mystery Argento made for Italian television. No, it’s not the most original of concepts because the whole theme is based on another director’s ideas. But at the same time, that’s also what makes it original. It’s both an homage as well as an Argento film.

The film follows a kind of dorky film student(is there any other kind?) who becomes suspicious of a sexy neighbor. At a local video store he witnesses a meeting between his neighbor and another attractive woman who both come to rent the Hitchcock film, Strangers On A Train. He suspects that these two woman have come to a similar arrangement as the two male characters in the Hitchcock film(and if you haven’t seen Strangers On A Train, shame on you!). And in the Argento(and Hitchcock) tradition, our protagonist plays detective and snoops and spies, getting in over his head when he finds out that there is indeed a murder plot going on. No one believes him of course and he finds himself a target.

This is a relatively common type of scenario with Argento, but this time the Hitchcock influence is cited. It’s the actual catalyst for the mystery. Argento also mixes in a bit of Rear Window and even a tad of Vertigo. For a made for T.V. movie, it’s very above average. Not as violent as the average Argento film, but it is a bit bloody for the first murder. Like I said before, don’t go expecting Deep Red, but Argento fans should get a bit of a kick out of it.

Dario Argento`s new film arrives with the slightly tongue-in-cheek title: `Do You Like Hitchcock?’ The film is not only homage to the master of suspense films, but it also is a surprisingly good thriller cleverly developed from the concepts in several of Hitchcock classics such as “Rear Window” and “Strangers on a Train.”

Giulio is a film student living in Turin, who occasionally watches Sasha, beautiful woman living in the room across the street. One night Sacha’s mother is brutally murdered. Apparently it was done by a robber, but Giulio alone knows some secrets anyone else does not know. One of them is that before the murder she was having a conversation with another lady at a local rental video store, and both of the women seem interested in Alfred Hitchcock films.

You don’t need any more summery of the plot, nor Giulio. Being a film student Giulio knows the story of most of the Hitchcock movies, and can predict what may happen next. He rather stubbornly insists on his theory that his girlfriend does not take seriously, and gets involved in the case more than he should.

First let me tell you something about the director’s trademarks. Dario Argento’s lavish visual style is certainly here, but you don’t find much gore or violence. You will still see the close-ups of seemingly unimportant things (like a key in the keyhole) and will find the film’s opening chapter unnecessary, but Argento fans would find the master’s distinct touch in them. You also hear the curiously enticing music of Pino Donaggio, but Argento’s technique is more restrained than usual. The script is more tightly written, but except for several thrilling moments (like Giulio riding a motorcycle running in the rain), the film fails to build up the tension we expect from this kind of suspense.

Still the film is largely well-acted (even though English-dubbed) and entertaining, will certainly keep us guessing until the end. Worth watching if you like either Argento or, of course, Hitchcock.

It’s easy to see why this movie won several TV British Academy Awards (BAFTAs). The acting is superb from all the actors (even down to the bit players), the music is superb, and the writing and direction are first-rate. The ending is also the best in any movie I have ever seen, and comes round too soon. For me, the story is about the relationship between two heterosexual men following the death of their wives - and how they both come to terms with their bereavement. Tom Courtney’s Southgate (which won him the Best Actor BAFTA award) grieves immediately after his wife dies. However, Albert Finney’s multi-layered Sgt.Major (also nominated for the Best Actor BAFTA) takes longer to come to terms with his life and loss. If you want to see the Best of British, this movie is one of those surprising little gems that only come around so often.

A story of two RAF World War II veterans who lost their wives in the same hospital on the same day, the film hatches into a work of reminiscence, mourning, moving on, deceit, and edges into a seemingly teasing plot of “what goes around comes around.” Womanizing Squadron Leader Reggie invites the prudish and submissive Southgate to take over domestic duties and become a companion at the encouragement of a very sweet social worker. Whether dealing with the golddigging Joanna Lumley (remember Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous?) or coming to terms with a son’s misery in prison, this film, while having low points, ends in a sweet, cheerful, and innocent manner. I definitely recommend it, and to think, I just found it by accident on a library shelf.
