Anytime you see a DVD with this style case and the words “Archive Collection” with the WB logo at the top, you are seeing a DVD-R that was manufactured on demand directly by Warner Brothers via their Warner Archives collection. They have about 170 or so titles available as of today, with that number expected to grow by about 20 or so titles a month until every one of the six thousand films in the Warner Bros. vaults is available to the public.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Somewhere I’ll Find You! Click Here

None of these titles have been remastered. They are digital transfers of the finest material Warner Brothers currently has in its vaults. The artwork is professional looking and the case sturdy.

The reason I am telling you all of this is that when you see rare titles such as this pop up, don’t think you’re getting the deal of the century to find such a rare old film on DVD and agree to pay any price. Warner Brothers will gladly make you one just like it for just under twenty dollars, maybe less if there is a sale going on. There is no need to enrich scalpers in your quest for classic film - at least not in this case.

It has been years since I last saw “Welcome Back, Kotter.” It is a real treat to see it coming out on DVD. No one could have imagined the break out star John Travolta would become, trading in his tight t-shirt for a white leisure suit, as Gabe Kaplan fights to hold his own against an unruly class of “Sweathogs,” who fall below the curve of Buchanan High School. This was the first high school comedy to capture a gritty urban feel. Room 222 had its moments but was sticky sweet by comparison. Gabe Kaplan drew on his life experiences, which had been the fodder of his stand-up routines, to capture a lively classroom of remedial kids led by Vinnie Barbarino. They manage to stay one step ahead of Vice Principal Woodman (John Sylvester White), but Kotter knows the tricks all too well, having been a sweathog himself in his youth. Robert Hegyes, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (who enjoyed a brief celebrity of his own) and Ron Palillo round out the motley crew, representative of the racial diversity of the school. Marcia Strassman is wonderful as Kotter’s wife, Julie, who has to listen to his daily accounts each evening, reminiscent of the bed conversations between Bob and Emily Newhart. The show had a good run of 4 seasons, which is appropriate given that it was a high school comedy. And, don’t forget the wonderful theme song by John Sebastian.

If you want to laugh and keep laughing, this is the DVD box set for you

Welcome Back Kotter was a cross between the Blackboard Jungle mixed with the Marx Brothers and Burns & Allen. The jokes were recycled Marx Brother msterial, but Gabe Kaplan (who created this show with Alan Sacks, based this on his stand up act) and crew made this stuff work.

And by crew, I mean actors John Travolta (pre Saturday Night Fever/Grease), Robert Hegyes, Lawrence Hilton Jacobs and Ron Palillo (as his students-the Sweathogs), Marcia Strassman (as Julie Kotter) and John Slyvester White (as Mr. Woodman). These actors keep this pace fun and well timed

The first time I saw this film was when I was 13 or so on a late night horror movie show in the mid sixties, I thought it was just a really dumb movie, but I liked it, I thought it was just someone trying to make a serious horror film that just turned out funny. When I saw the film for sale on DVD I just had to buy it, just to see if my boyhood memory of the film was true what I found was a film that must have been planed to be funny or at least I hope so, as a fan of really campie movies I have to rate The Creature from the Haunted Sea right up there with Plan 9 and other dumb movies, call me weird but I just like it its good for a giggle.

CREATURE FROM HAUNTED SEA isn’t so bad when you consider that Roger Corman made it along with two other movies (The Last Woman On Earth, and Battle Of Blood Island) almost simultaneously in Puerta Rico! The casts are interchanchable. The storylines of the three couldn’t be any more different from each other! CFHS is a silly, semi-interesting spy / monster flick with what resembles a pop-eyed, rubber-gloved christmas tree as the monster! Need I say more? I like it enough to watch it every once in a while. Check it out…

This 1961 Western has a lot going for it: It stars Brian Keith and the beautiful Maureen O’Hara, who had such great chemistry in “The Parent Trap,” released the very same year. It’s Sam Peckinpah’s directorial debut in motion pictures; most people reading this know that Peckinpah went on to become a highly acclaimed director with such notable efforts as 1969’s “The Wild Bunch.” In addition, “The Deadly Companions” was filmed on location in Arizona (including Old Tucson); you can’t beat Arizona for fine, authentic Western locations. Lastly, the picture only runs 90 minutes, so it won’t likely wear out its welcome.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Deadly Companions! Click Here

THE STORY: Keith’s character vengefully searches for a scumbag who tried to scalp him alive 5 years earlier and accidently kills a beautiful saloon girl’s son. Feeling guilty, he offers to escort her to the ghost town where the boy’s father was buried so she can bury the son as well. There’s two problems: They have to go through injun territory and two lowlifes accompany them most of the way.

BOTTOM LINE: On paper this sounds like it would be a worthwhile Western, unfortunately it never rises above mediocre, and dangerously verges on being deadly dull. Plus the viewer can hardly see what’s going on during the numerous (brief) night sequences. Moreover, two of the main characters are incredibly unlikable (which can be defended on the grounds that they’re the real villains of the story). Hence, I can only recommend “The Deadly Companions” to uber-fans of Keith and O’Hara or Peckinpah completists.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Deadly Companions! Click Here

With all that said, there are some worthwhile aspects, like the church service in the saloon and the depiction of O’Hara as a social outcast amongst the church folk (for legitimate reasons).

NOTE: There are numerous editions of this film by different dvd companies; my dvd is from PDC Home Entertainment and the picture quality is great for such an old film; the main menu is kind of cheap, but who cares about that?

3/5 Stars is generous. Grade: C

Written, directed and produced by George P. Breakston, who’s probably more known for his role as Beezy in the Andy Hardy movies throughout the 30’s and early 40’s, The Manster (1962) aka Kyofu, aka Nightmare, aka The Split, aka The Two-Headed Monster, has the distinction, as far as I know, of being the first film to deal with the issues associated with a man having two heads, appearing some ten years before the better known and definitely more schlocky vehicle starring Ray Milland and Rosie Grier, The Thing with Two Heads (1972).

Starring the runner up in the Lon Chaney Jr. look-a-like contest Peter Dyneley, whose other notable roles include the voice of Jeff Tracy in the Supermarionation Thunderbirds series from the 60’s, also appearing in such films as Chato’s Land (1972) and K is for Killing (1974), as foreign news correspondent Larry Stanford. Also appearing is Jane Hylton, whom I recognize from Circus of Horrors (1960) as Linda Stanford, Peter’s somewhat wooden and estranged wife, Tetsu Nakamura as Dr. Robert Suzuki, and, in her first and only role, the comely Terri Zimmern as the doctor’s assistant, Tara.

The film plays out in Japan, and starts off by showing some women bathing and such, oh yeah, and then being attacked by a mysterious, extremely hairy man-creature, oh no. Now, we don’t actually get to see the attack, but given the blood-curdling nature of the screaming, we can assume things didn’t end well for these ladies. Segue way to what appears to be a hunting shack on a mountain where Dr. Suzuki and his assistant Tara are discussing an experiment that escaped the previous night and has now returned. The good doctor acknowledges that his man-thing is too dangerous, and proceeds to the cavernous basement of the shack (it’s built on a mountain, so I guess he’s utilizing the caves for his laboratory) and shoots the man-beast and dumps the body into a convenient lava pit. Now here comes foreign news correspondent Larry Stanford, trekking up the mountain to the shack. Apparently his boss arranged a meeting with the doctor, fishing for a juicy story of sorts. The doctor informs Larry that he’s working on theories of evolution, and takes a keen interest in the reporter, as he decides that Larry has just the right characteristics for his experiments (if that includes smoking like a chimney and drinking himself silly, yes, doctor, he’s your man). Anyway, the doctor slips Larry the proverbial mickey, and then injects him with something. Larry awakens with a doozy of a headache, and leaves, but not before agreeing to meet up with the doctor again in Tokyo.

Next we cut to Larry at his newspaper, and we learn that his days of traveling the world, reporting on various events are coming to an end as he’s soon leaving to return to New York to settle down with his wife, Linda. Peter gets a call from the doctor, and they hang out in a Geisha house, where Larry gets schnockered good on saki and has a grand old time. Larry has so much fun he puts off his returning home to New York to hang out with Dr. Suzuki and pitches a little woo with the doctor’s assistant, Tara. Larry also begins suffering from pains in his shoulder and arm, and we know this has something to do with the secret enzyme shot the doctor administered not too long ago. Soon Larry’s wife shows up from New York, worried about his not coming back when he was supposed to, and she finds that Larry is not quite himself. Larry tells her they’re through, and that he’s going to stay in Japan with the much more attractive Tara (who is beginning to feel a bit guilty about her involvement in Dr. Suzuki’s part of the experiment on Larry).

Soon Larry’s hand and arm changes, getting all hairy and claw-like, and his shoulder begins to hurt more and more. What’s with this pain in the shoulder? How about the fact that he has an eyeball growing out of there? Wouldn’t that be something worth getting checked out? Maybe it’s not covered in the HMO…anyway, we learn from the doctor that Larry is evolving into a species never before seen on Earth…this should be fun…given what I’ve seen, I think devolving would be the more correct term. Larry begins to flip out, sprouting a second head, and murdering a few Japanese locals along the way, while the police become involved as they start hunting this homicidal manic haunting the streets of Tokyo. Things eventually come to a…ahem, head (pun intended) as the chase for Larry and his permanent buddy increases. What happens next? Let’s just say Larry and his new buddy come to a `parting of ways’…

I rather enjoyed this movie, despite a few shortcomings…the most noticeable being given the dangerous and secret nature of Dr. Suzuki’s experiments, I am unsure why he let Larry run around Tokyo during his transformation…I would have probably kept him locked up, but then, what do I know? And there’s a pretty clunky sub-plot about Dr. Suzuki, displaying classic mad scientist symptoms with his cold and calculating methods, later feeling remorse and regret about his deeds, based on nothing more than the continual harping from his assistant Tara…but whatever, this movie was still a lot of fun. With its 72 minute run time, the pacing was pretty quick, and the makeup wasn’t too bad. I didn’t get to see as much of it as I would have liked, but since this was a lower budget production, it was probably best not to highlight it too much, as it may have displayed inherent flaws.

Retromedia Entertainment presents a passable print, with some noticeable deterioration, but given the price of the DVD, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot in this area. There is also a special feature included in the form of a rather meager photo gallery (three or four photos).

Cookieman108

This curiosity, filmed on location in Japan with an English speaking cast, is the horrifying story of a man who unwittingly becomes the guinea pig in a mad doctor’s experiment to mutuate the human life form. Peter Dyneley, usually in supporting roles in other films, gives the performance of his career, as the foreign correspondent who is injected with a serum that makes him grow into a monstrous, two-headed murderer! Jane Hylton, veteran character actress and star of “Circus Of Horrors” (1960), plays his wife. The film is rich in snappy dialogue, campy sets, good makeup, interesting on-location shooting, and has a fine musical score to boot. Modeled after the Universal horror films of the 30’s and 40’s, the film was horrifying enough to give this reviewer nightmares as a child, and remains an enjoyable experience to this day. “The Manster” is certainly one of the scariest film monsters of all time, and will leave the viewer with frightening images! Watch out for Kenji!

In a culture desensitized by violent brutality and computer-generated wizardry, it may be enough to say that I watched The Holy Mountain, which contains neither, with my mouth hanging open the entire time. I still can’t quite believe that such a film was ever made, though I’ve long sensed that such a film should be. While not overtly violent, The Holy Mountain is punctuated by graphic, shocking and heretical images, but these only form one aspect of its jaw-dropping resonance. Jodorowsky’s film is original, audacious, visually and thematically inspired. It’s also kind of funny.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Holy Mountain! Click Here

In essence the film is a series of literalized metaphors about the archetypal spiritual journey to experience reality beyond illusion, a quest motivated by a desire to transcend the absurd horrors of civilization: war, greed, corruption, self-obsession and the politics of power. As such the characters and events themselves are largely symbolic. Unlike a lot of avant-garde films, Holy Mountain’s narrative is structured and surprisingly linear, though it flowers like a rambling, slightly disjointed dream.

Jodorowsky’s spiritual path is an unflinching synthesis of the basic conceptual and aesthetic elements of many mystical traditions, including Zen’s formal simplicity, Kabbalic and Hindu ritual, Alchemical processes, Shamanic trials, master/student dynamics and the mythology of the Holy Mountain itself, all of which are gracefully blended into the artful and psychedelic texture of the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Holy Mountain! Click Here

Despite the clichéd “ancient wisdom” aspect of some moments, The Holy Mountain achieves what is a fairly fresh and ultimately tongue-in-cheek attempt to enlighten the audience. Sometimes the pacing and editing of the film feel a little dated, but this usually adds to the film’s unique style rather than diminish it. The Holy Mountain is an ambitious film, provocative in its boldness and charming in its outlandishness, and traveling with these seekers will undoubtedly color our own journeys, both inner and outer…

I have now purchased a copy of The Films of Alejandro Jodorowski and I give this film even a higher recommendation than I did before. The DVD is superb, and it’s a nice plus to run Jodorowski’s commentary track as subtitles on the film itself, since the commentary is in Spanish anyway.

El Topo was about a man seeking enlightenment and was made before Jodorowsky had ever smoked marijuana or taken LSD. The Holy Mountain is the attempt to enlighten the entire society. To prepare, he found a Guru, who gave him LSD. Then after he had gathered his cast, he took them on a three month retreat to prepare, and the film itself seems to have taken six months to shoot. When I met Jodorowsky in 2003, he called El Topo his favorite son; The Holy Mountain his troubled son; and Santa Sangre his perfect son. All three are essential works. Jodorowsky truly is Alexandro the Great.

Holy Mountain is not about being high, it is about seeing through all illusions, of which getting high very much is one of those illusions. It is a huge satire of the modern world in which the Alchemist (played by Alexandro himself) finds the most horrible people in the solar system, and then takes them on a quest that pacifies them by promising immortality - just like the regular religions!

For a film that does not go “inside” any of the characters — we see them in beautifully framed compositions — it is very easy to follow and never lets the viewer down. In the end, he even reveals the secret of immortality. “And here we are — mortals, more human than ever.”

I think I should note that Richard Rutowski, who worked with Oliver Stone on several of his most interesting works (like The Doors, Nixon, and U Turn), plays the character Axon.

I believe The Holy Moutain may be the most perfect Utopian vision ever put on film.

And if someone tried to make a film like this today, they’d probably be arrested.

“In Her Shoes”, the book, was decent chick lit; a sophomore effort by author Jennifer Weiner. Of note is that Weiner’s books will no doubt get a fresh breath in sales after a ton of American women openly weep for this movie! I’m not sure how the studio (Fox) got Curtis Hanson to direct the film. Hanson, who’s scored big with “L.A. Confidential”, “Wonder Boys” and “8 Mile” seems an unlikely choice, but it is he who wisely emphasizes what is real about the film; the relationships, sibling rivalry, difficulty for a family to deal with a member who is outwardly normal, but who suffers from a psychological trauma; generation gaps and the expectations for people to be what they look like, and not who they really are.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In Her Shoes! Click Here

Hanson beefed up his chances for more that just fleeting commercial success by securing Toni Collette (Muriel’s Wedding, About a Boy) for the really central role in the film, and surrounding her with Diaz, MacLaine, and a solid cast of performers in lesser roles. (This is not to take anything away from Mark Feurstein, who plays Simon. As always he exudes charm and vulnerability in his roles that makes him a favorite of nearly every woman who sees him on the screen).

Hanson takes Collette, as Rose, from disgust at having to deal with messy, drunken, inconsiderate sister Maggie (Diaz) when all she really wants to do is focus on a new love affair, to angry lashing out when Maggie betrays her. He allows her to show the sense of loss she has when she doesn’t know what happened to Maggie, self-discovery when she gets away from being a workaholic lawyer, sweet charm when she discovers love under her nose and begins to enjoy it, to self-loathing. And back again! He allows us to see Diaz as someone at her worst - uncontrollable, inconsiderate, a woman chock-full of destructive behaviors who slowly, slowly begins to find herself when faced with a woman who won’t just give her what she wants so she’ll go away. Diaz is at once her most beautiful and her most cheap and tawdry in this role. MacLaine, as Ella, a caricature of every character she’s played in the last 10 years, has the dubious distinction of making Maggie decide to get real and have a real life, crazy as it seems, in a Florida senior citizen community.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In Her Shoes! Click Here

In the journey of self-discovery that is Rose’s and Maggie’s, at the same time, but in different states, Hanson fills us with the longing they both have, and the need they have to be together. For all their opposite traits, for all their mistakes, Rose and Maggie, above all, are two sisters whose lives are so entwined, they cannot be torn apart.

In the quintessential scene from the film, where MacLaine, (who has been shut out from the girls’ lives because she interfered too often with their mother, her own mentally unbalanced daughter) takes out a photo album, the two reminisce about the “best day” with their mom. Two days before her death she withdrew them from school, took them to Manhattan, and attempted to sell her fudge to department stores ala Mrs. Field’s cookies. Spurned, she bought Rose a Nancy Drew book and Maggie a puppy. She returned home to her husband, who was frantic with worry….he has closely guarded the girls, since she is so unstable, and he feels she needs to be hospitalized. (Manic depressive? We learn she has not been taking her meds). It is remarkable to see Maggie (Diaz) learn for the first time what that day really meant; that it caused their mother to commit suicide (Maggie thought it was a car accident) and that from that day forward, Rose protected and sheltered her from the ugliness of what their mother had done and why. It’s a powerful scene, made more powerful by the information as elicited by Ella, over the old photos.

There are more well-nuanced scenes in this film, and there are also places where it attempts to play too much on your emotions, such as Maggie’s insistence at picking out Rose’s wedding dress.

In her shoes, of course, is metaphoric for the same shoe size that both the sisters wear, the incongruity of a closet-full of beautiful designer shoes purchased by Rose, and unworn…that Maggie dips into and takes whenever she feels like it. You never really know what life is like for a sister or a friend until you’ve walked in her shoes.

All in all, Hanson does a remarkable job with the material, Collette is spectacular, Diaz shines, and the film has both power and light touches that will make it memorable for women from all walks of life. Men? I daresay the handful of men that see it will like it, but most should wait and watch the DVD as a favor to their significant others!

Not far into “In Her Shoes,” Rose, played by Toni Collette, tells her sister, “You ruin everything!”

She’s right, too.

Maggie, played by Cameron Diaz, is a party girl pushing 30 who’s unemployed but works full time making messes. Sort of a Holly Go-Not-So-Lightly, she ruins borrowed clothes, parks in tow-away zones, is far better at consuming liquor than holding it and has a bad tendency to cozy up to the wrong guys.

Lawyer Rose, on the other hand, has her act together but isn’t much better off. Lonely and scrunched up, she reads romance novels through stark glasses and has a smile that’s a little disconcerting. When she finds herself in bed with a co-worker, she sneaks a snapshot of him just to preserve a rare moment.

Obviously, the sisters are both going through kind of a sad phase and when they have to move in together, they mix like bleach and ammonia. Their toxic conflict, however, nudges them in good directions.

Director Curtis Hanson doesn’t rush the story — one thing happens, then the next — but it’s surprisingly enjoyable to watch as Rose and Maggie eventually try to fix themselves. It could’ve been slow going, or corny, but it isn’t. The writing (by Susannah Grant, who adapted Jennifer Weiner’s novel) is so natural, and the performances so assured, “Shoes” is easy to settle into. Diaz convincingly inverts her bubbly persona into something with dimensions far beyond “Charlie’s Angels,” while Collette is a refreshingly sympathetic grouch. And though they may not look anything at all like siblings, they do a fine job of acting like them.

Also good is Shirley McLaine as the sisters’ grandmother. She has played quite a few stern, disapproving women before (she’s to chick flicks what Bruce Willis is to movies for guys who like movies), but here she very nicely downplays her usual volatility.

At just over two hours, the film might strike some as a bit long, and I’m usually the first to complain about excessive length, but in thinking back about it afterward, it’s hard to come up with anything that should’ve been cut.

Smarter and more heartfelt than the previews suggest, “Shoes” is a tearjerker that earns its sniffles.

Here is one of the great intellectual, action movies in the tradition of “Lawrence of Arabia!” The sharp screenplay by Robert Ardrey, an African historian, is crammed with ideas: colonialism, religion, fate, politics, etc. At the same time, it is an incredible recreation of the battles surrounding that period of history and the siege of Khartoum. The battle sequences were directed by none other than Yakima Canutt, the legendary director for the chariot race in “Ben-Hur.” Charlton Heston’s performance as General Gordon is one of his finest. Laurence Olivier’s performance as the Mahdi is outstanding and will leave you a little spooked as he reveals the mind of an Islamic fanatic. This film was not a hit in the United States. I believe that is because it was released in the summer and a movie about the desert should never be released then. (”Lawrence of Arabia” was released right before Christmas.) If released in the winter, it would have done much better business and been given more respect as part of the traditonal end-of-year important films. It was also released in Cinerama, the defunct curved screen process, making the film’s incredible photography and direction truly spectacular. And it explains some of the photography angles. I see the DVD is not preserving the original 2.75 Cinerama/Ultra Panavision aspect ratio (”Hello, MGM! Wake up!”) but no matter. This is one of the finest historical films you will ever see. And with the recent trajedies, it is even more pertinent. History does repeat itself! One of the finest lines in the film is when General Gordon, Charlton Heston, says to the Mahdi, Laurence Olivier, “While I may die of your miracle, you will surely die of mine.” It really does not get much better than this.

Though the historical events in this film took place in 1884-85, there are aspects of it that remind one of today’s headlines; this is a sadly underrated film, with a fantastic cast, massive battle scenes, and a beautifully written script about an extraordinary man.
There are scenes that take “artistic license”, but the film is quite accurate in its facts on General Gordon; a military genius who hated war, a deeply religious man who worked to end slavery, and who fell in love with the desolate scorching sands and the people of the Sudan.

The pairing of Charlton Heston and Laurence Olivier is fabulous, and their scenes together are riveting. Heston is gaunt in this film, to closer portray the slightly built Gordon, and speaks with a subtle but excellent English accent; Olivier is the fanatic who calls himself The Mahdi (”The Expected One”), waging a holy war with his followers to destroy anyone who opposes his beliefs, with the aim of conquering the world for his fundamentalist faith.
Other wonderful performances come from Richard Johnson as Col. Stewart, Ralph Richardson as Prime Minister Gladstone, Nigel Green as Gen Wolseley, and Johnny Sekka is a delight as Gordon’s servant Khaleel.

After British-led Egyptian forces are massacred by The Mahdi’s insurgents, the British government asks Egypt to give up the Sudan, and General Gordon is called to evacuate the European and Egyptian civilians from the Sudan; he stays to ward off the terrorists and the siege of Khartoum takes place.
The sweeping panoramas of the desert and the Nile river are sumptuous (cinematography by Edward Scaife), and the Frank Cordell score is terrific, though it owes a bit to Maurice Jarre’s music for “Lawrence of Arabia”; released 6 years earlier, “Lawrence” has some comparisons to this film, as they are both about adventurous men of courage who felt comfortable in Arab lands.
This film sparked my imagination and made me want to know more about Gordon’s fascinating life and the history that surrounded him, and it is one I could watch repeatedly. Total running time is 134 minutes.
“…but there is this: A world with no room for the Gordons, is a world that will return to the sands”.
