This is definitely a MUST PURCHASE DVD for any die-hard euro-horror fan! This ridiculous and extremely entertaining 1965 Italian horror-romp stars Mickey Hargitay (Jayne Mansfield’s husband) as “The Crimson Executioner”. He struts around bare-chested wearing red tights and admiring his muscular body in the mirror as he rubs it all over with oil. When a film crew comes to his castle, he starts torturing and killing them off one by one, overacting all the way! Mickey is a true ham and jumps around the screen like a lunatic throughout. One great highlight is a room with a giant spiderweb and a hungry spider. And then, of course, there’s the torture chamber. There’s a rotating torture device that Mickey ties bikini-clad women up to and as it turns a sharp blade rips and tears at their skimpy brassieres and lightly scrapes their flesh! And with Mickey running around half-naked throughout in his red tights, were they also going for a gay audience? It’s all quite tame by today’s standards, but at the time, this must have been quite a sensation! It’s a great sleaze-trash classic NOT TO BE MISSED!

The DVD presents the film in it’s U.S. 73-minute abbreviated version. 9 minutes were trimmed out of the complete version (”A Tale of Torture”) by it’s American distributor. The deleted scenes are included as a supplement (including the alternate title sequence), but it’s too bad they didn’t restore the footage back into the film. Something Weird offers the complete 83 minute version “A Tale of Torture” on VHS under the “Bloody Pit” title so you would have thought this would be the same print. BUT it’s not… maybe because the print used here looks a lot better than the “Torture” print and it’s fully letterboxed whereas the “Torture” print was only marginally letterboxed. Also, the movie has never looked better than this transfer…the colors are vibrant and sharp and the detail is quite good (although there is some minor artifacting). So, having the deleted scenes as a supplement only was probably a good decision.

Other extras include a rather worn (and kind of lame) U.S. trailer, a clip from the movie “Primitive Love” with Jayne and Mickey shot around the same time and another clip called “Cover Girl Slaughter” which shows a lurid magazine cover photo shoot featuring women staged in murder or death scenes (mildly amusing). The best extra is the gallery of exploitation art and ad-slicks for lots of ultra-rare horror and trash flicks from the 60’s and 70’s. It’s accompanied by an audio track of rare radio spots including the notorious “Last House on the Left” - It’s Only a Movie spot, the “Mark of the Devil” - Vomit Bag spot and many more! All in all a great DVD. Buy It Now!

STORY: Seeking a gothic background for a horror photo shoot, five sexy cover girls and a handful of photographers break into what they assume is an uninhabited castle and are soon taking a series of macabre stills in its dungeon. But–surprise!–residing in the castle is demented actor Travis Anderson (Mickey Hargitay) who thinks he’s the reincarnation of The Crimson Executioner, a 17th century madman whose body is entombed in the castle’s iron maiden. When Travis recognizes one of the models as his former fiancee, his already unhinged mind completely snaps. He gleefully subjects the trespassers to a variety of bizarre and elaborately-conceived tortures: “The Crimson Executioner cries out for blood!”

PICTURE: 4/5 Where did Something Weird Video get this print? It looks great! Bloody Pit of Horror is shown here in PsychoVision (1.85:1) and like i said looks great. The picture is sharp with nice stong colors and deep blacks. I only saw two scenes that had print damage and it was not distracting at all. Overall, a great looking picture for such a old film.

SOUND: 4/5 The sound is Mono English dubbed and sounds very good. The track is clean and sounds clear.

EXTRAS: 3/5 You get some really weird stuff here. First you get the films trailer which does not look no where as good as the film looks. Next you get some deleted scenes, a long art galley with some cool radio spot for a ton of other films and some weird short films.

OVERALL: 5/5 If your a fan of movies that are so bad that there good, then this DVD of Blood Pit of Horror is for you. Pick it up today. Plus, Mickey Hargitay’s performance as the Crimson Executioner is so crazy and goofy, you have to see it!

This is a story about a stubborn and arrogant man who needs to push his body to its absolute limits, but who dedicates very little of his energy to his soul or intellect. That’s the concept the unites this film and the book on which it was based. But ultimately films owe no debt to the books or the reality on which they are based (read the book “Monster” by the late screenwriter and author John Gregory Dunne if you need to get that straight).

Brad Pitt is not unwatchable as Heinrich Harrer, but you may cringe at his Austrian accent. Just remember that this film may not have been made at all without his interest and participation, and it wouldn’t have been permitted the sort of budget that gave us the amazing landscapes which dominate the movie.

I suppose once they had their big star, casting went for the very finest actors they could find regardless of their status: therefore, we have two beautifully resonant performances by David Thewlis as Pitt’s climbing companion and Lhapka Tsamchoe as the Love Interest.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Seven Years in Tibet! Click Here

This movie is about Heinrich Harrer, but there is some focus on his ties to the Dalai Lama. Very little screen time is spent in the camp for enemy aliens (those were YEARS of his life) or the difficult scrabble simply to exist once he escaped. The shots of the Dalai Lama’s early childhood are there not only to foreshadow the important role the Dalai Lama ultimately plays, but also to establish a link between the child who befriends Harrer and the son who Harrer does not know.

The authenticity and detail of Tibetan life, dress, buildings, and so forth is rare and overwhelming. Even if it was staged, it is a good record of a lost time.

Further praise to the screenwriter (Becky Johnston) who translated a good book into a good movie. The addition of a few good laugh lines and the general development of character were well done.

Heinrich Harrer is an interesting man and merits a movie about his life. Of course, the elements of living in Tibet and developing a friendship with the Dalai Lama are crucial to the interest. For my part I’ve watched the movie several times and I always get deliciously lost in the scenery.

There are so many spiritual moments in this movie. I was literally captivated from start to finish. The theme of mountain climbing was fascinating and the sheer beauty of the snow laden mountains gives the story a purity of spirit.

In my humble opinion, this is Brad Pitt’s finest movie yet. As the Austrian mountain climber, Heinrich Harrer, he brings a sexy warmth to a freezing climate. At first Heinrich is only concerned with his own existence and is quite out of touch with his spiritual self. He abruptly leaves his very pregnant wife to fend for herself as he runs off to join an expedition to climb Nanga Parbat in British India in 1939.

He seems to be on a personal journey with destiny lending a hand. While climbing, he is captured and spends time as a prisoner of war. Not even this experience breaks the chains that seems to hold his soul captive. In his case, the enemy doesn’t help him to develop patience and compassion. It takes the heart of a child to show him why he should climb down from the mountain of his own pride, so he can take on a higher challenge, love.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful story of two souls who find one another under the most hostile situation. For a brief moment in time, they know true friendship, despite the age and cultural differences.

Unfortunately, mankind is rarely happy with what they have and when Tibet comes under attack, the tranquility and harmony of the Tibetan city of Lhasa is completely destroyed.

While humans have the ability to destroy one another, they also have the ultimate responsibility to love one another and nothing is more difficult when your philosophies of life clash so horribly. While peace is the ultimate goal, this movie brings the realization that evil is alive and well and that at times, evil seems to have an upper hand in many countries.

Still, the hope for peace and happiness for every human burns in some hearts like a flame for the rest of the world to see. Finding a reason to live in a difficult situation and not running from your responsibilities to friends, family and country is also emphasized.

Thoughtful and will leave you with a feeling of peace and hope.

Quotes from the Dalai Lama I found recently:

When you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect towards others.

We have to take seriously our concern for all of humanity. When we focus on our individuality, humanity inevitably suffers. Whether we love humanity or not, we must realize that we are part of it. That is why being compassionate is actually in my own best interest. And a symptom of my own peace of mind that I can share comfort with others around me.

It is constructive and worthwhile to analyze our emotions, including compassion and our sense of caring, so that we can become more calm and happy. Hatred, jealousy, and fear hinder peace of mind. When you’re angry or unforgiving, for example, your mental suffering is constant. It is better to forgive than to spoil your peace of mind with ill feelings.

Altruism is the best source of happiness. There is no doubt about it.

Good action vampire stories, whether written, drawn or on film are just plain hard to find. For a while now the ‘not quite bad’ vampire and even the ‘good’ vampire have been fashionable. Not that I have anything against Angel or Henry Fitzroy and their ilk, but sometimes you want a story with a clear division between good and evil and a lot of knock them down and stake them action. Enter Blade.

Blade is a half vampire with a very nasty attitude toward his relatives on the dark side. Played by Wesley Snipes, he has all the moves and attitude you could ever want. His partner in his war against the things that did in his mother is Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson). Later, Karen (N’Bushe Wright) a forensic hematologist who has the bad luck to find a vampire on her table, joins them. Opposing this team is Frost (Steven Dorff), a vampire rebel who thinks it is time for the un-people with pointy teeth to come out of the closet. His plan is simple. Take over the vampire council, capture Blade and resurrect La Magra - the blood god. Then there will be nothing but vampires and bloodsicles.

‘Blade’ is an extremely violent film. Almost everyone is a martial arts expert, has access to what the US Congress would consider weapons of mass destruction, or is a victim. Sometimes, they are all three. Toss in a sufficiency of special effects, great settings, and good acting and you have the film. What makes ‘Blade’ work is its intense focus. It works hard at being exactly what it is - an action film with a strong ‘wow’ factor. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.

Steven Norrington, a director considerable experience in the horror/science fiction genre, has a great sense of what it takes to make comic book characters come to life on the screen. He manages to retain the strong visual impact of the original Marvel Comics series. David Goyer’s script manages to capture the essence of comic book dialogue - sparse, but not stilted. The overall effect is a film that builds smoothly from start to ending, with very few slow moments.

The extras on the DVD are surprisingly good. Good sized features on the concepts and effects that went into the film, the story of the Blade comic, and an interesting survey of the vampire in human imagination. In addition, there is an extensive running commentary for the film. All of these are intelligently done. I think ‘Blade,’ despite its violence, will appeal a wide range of viewers as something more than just another Hong Kong fight film wannabe.

This was a great action/horror film, packed with some excellent special effects, an entertaining storyline, and at least a couple of reasonably talented actors (Snipes, Dorff). Kristofferson is terrible as always (a hint to you casting people… Sam Elliott would have been MUCH better as the tough and gritty Whistler).

But you’re not really reading this review to hear about the movie — you can get that kind of info anywhere. What you want to know is “Is the DVD worth buying instead of a VHS tape?” Weeeellll…

This movie is undoubtedly THE showcase movie for DVD (the Mummy is another very good choice). The picture quality is fantastic, and the sound is incredible (you gotta listen to it in Dolby Digital 5.1 on a nice home theater system to fully appreciate the sound). But what really sets this format apart from anything else are the SPECIAL FEATURES. A ton of things like information about the different Vampire houses, commentary from the director on the making of the film, and an alternative ending, really show how the DVD format can add to your viewing experience. Many DVDs (too many, in fact) are simply direct transfers from another format to DVD. No extras, limited enhancements on picture and sound… A perfect example of a BAD DVD is Highlander!

The DVD versions of the Bond movies have also shown the industry a thing or two about how to make a truly interesting and worthwhile DVD movie. DVDs like Blade make me happy I purchased a DVD player!

It’s hard to believe that when Casablanca was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in 1942 it was “just another” of the 50 or so films that the studio was producing every year, as Lauren Bacall points out in the documentary about the film included in the special features. The movie was an instant success with audiences everywhere, and won three Academy Awards including Best Picture. Called “America’s most popular and beloved movie- and rightly so” by The Motion Picture Guide, and “The best Hollywood movie of all time” by Leonard Maltin, Casablanca was voted the #2 film in a list of the top 100 films of this century by the American Film Institute.
Set in refugee strewn French North Africa in 1942, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a night club owner, and his friend Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), Prefect of Police, enter into a wager as to whether or not Resistance Leader Victor Laslo (Paul Henreid) will be able to escape Casablanca and reach the Free World. When Laslo arrives in Casablanca, Rick is stunned to find him accompanied by his ex-lover, Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman). Filled with mystery, suspense, intrigue and romance, Casablanca will remain a favorite of classic movie lovers for years to come.
The supporting cast include Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Dooley Wilson as Rick’s piano playing confidant, Sam. The entire cast are superb, the settings are excellent, and the cinematogrophy is wonderful.
The song “As Time Goes By” was made famous by Casablanca, as it’s melody is entwined throughout the film, and it too is now a classic, filled with romance and nostalgia.
This is one film that absolutely MUST be in your DVD library!

I agree that any review of an HD DVD disk should include an opinion as to its technical quality, if possible comparing it to the regular DVD release. For the Casablanca HD DVD, I found the following opinion in the online magazine Perfect Vision, a high end technologically oriented magazine: “Casablanca is the film to see as the black-and-white showcase of hi-def. The setting of Morocco and Rick’s Café Americain jump from the screen in breathtaking crystal clarity.”

As someone who has always loved the Stanley Kubrick interpretation of this story, I have to say that I REALLY enjoyed this one. Having never read the book, I never knew that the Kubrick version was so different from Stephen King’s original story. The two films are definitely two completely different stories.

The charactors in this version are so much more developed and believably realistic.

Steven Weber’s Jack Torrence is a normal guy that is trying hard to deal with his alcoholism and anger, and also keep his family together, while at the same time being slowly consumed by the forces of the Overlook Hotel. He is much more that just a babbling Psycho.

Rebecca De Mornay’s Wendy is a more believable, strong wife also struggling to maintain her marriage and protect her son. This is definitely not the whimpering and submissive Wendy of the Kubrick version.

I rcommend this film to any fan of Stephen King. This DVD makes a great addition to any good horror library.

If you liked the Stanley Kubrick version of this story, I think you will be pleasantly suprised.

The Stanley Kubrick version of this story was a classic in its own right, but IMO should not be considered to be a movie version of the book at all. Stephen King’s book, and the miniseries version on this DVD, are a “haunted house” story. Kubrick’s film is a psychological thriller. They are not even in the same genre.
That said, the Kubrick film is better in terms of sheer filmmaking - when Kubrick was on, he was really, really good, and it shows in his version of this story. Sadly, that fact is often missed by the legions of fans who get so caught up in “it’s not like the book”-itis that they don’t enjoy the film for what it is. Jack Nicholson is a far better actor than Steven Weber, and it shows.
The miniseries, however, has one HUGE advantage - with a total of nearly 8 hours of “movie” to work with, they were able to keep the storyline virtually untouched. Although I am typically not a believer - there are just not very many movies made from novels that even remotely resemble their original source material ( “Exit To Eden,” originally an erotic novel by Anne Rice, turned into a Dan Aykroyd comedy, just LEAPS to mind for some reason…) - this movie is as close to a perfect conversion of a novel as I’ve seen.
The creepy moments are really, really creepy - the scene with topiary animals moving closer every time the camera pans away absolutely makes your skin crawl, even if you’re prepared for it. Although Steven Weber isn’t Jack Nicholson, the character he’s playing isn’t a “Jack” kind of guy - and Weber fills the role admirably, even though occasionally the touching family scenes teeter RIGHT on the edge of being maudlin.
If you have the patience for it, which I notice at least one other viewer didn’t, this is in fact an excellent film. Just don’t consider this and the Stanley Kubrick movie to be different versions of the same story - they’re not, and the comparison will make both films suffer. You’re better off to enjoy them both as distinct, separate entities, with very different agendas.

Oh, and do NOT turn your back on any hedge lions.

Heh.

First of all, I am extremely happy and impressed that the popularity of the Dallas DVDs continues to surge, prompting Warner Bros. to release DVDs of the more “unpopular” seasons (the big question is whether Warner Bros. will release the dreadful final 4 seasons of the show). When Warner Bros. released the first 2 seasons on DVD, I never imagined that they would ever get to the so-called “dream season”.

The reason this season was erased had more to do with producers’ egos and control and less to do with satisfying the fans. Producer Leonard Katzman and his preferred “writing crew” were basically pushed out by Executive Producer Phil Capice at the end of last season. Hence, Katzman chose to erase this season to “stick it” to Phil Capice and the replacement writers. By erasing the entire season, Katzman was trying to reaffirm to himself and everyone else that without him, Dallas could not be a success. He explained to the press that he just couldn’t fix “the mess” that was Season 9. So, he made sure everyone knew that he had no other choice because Phil Capice and his new writing crew had screwed Dallas up so much with these storylines. What most people do not know is that Dallas had lower ratings in all seasons subsequent to the “dream season” (i.e., all subsequent seasons where Leonard Katzman was Executive Producer, replacing Phil Capice).

Although Leonard Katzman’s creativity and brilliance were essential to making Dallas the success it became, the dream season was actually a pretty good season, particularly the first 12 - 14 episodes. Yes, it emphasized more “Dynasty glitz”. However, the storylines were still far superior than any other stories in other prime-time soaps. As far as “silly storylines”, this season may have had a few, but so did almost EVERY season of Dallas. Emerald Mine storyline? Yes, a little silly, but not as silly as the “Wes Parmalee/Jock” storyline to occur in the next season, or Clayton’s obsession with a girl in a painting that played out in the 11th season. Angelica Nero storyline too long? Maybe. But so was the “Jenna Wade/Naldo Murder” storyline in the previous season. Ironically, the Angelica Nero storyline was created by Leonard Katzman (who still wrote a handful of episodes during this season and was credited as a “Creative Consultant” during this season).

The early episodes of this season included some of the best writing and acting in the entire run of the series. The first episode tugged at your heart as you watched Miss Ellie asking J.R. to pour her a drink, and J.R. at first being non-responsive due to the shock of Bobby’s death. Then J.R. lashes out at Sue Ellen for not being at Bobby’s deathbed, showing the audience that J.R. needed to lash out at someone to help mitigate the mourning that J.R. was enduring for the death of his little brother. You cannot help from tearing up watching Pamela crying herself to sleep and blaming herself that her little boy would never see his father again. Gary and Ray offering to help J.R. at the office causes an uncalled-for hurtful response from J.R., showing that he isn’t invincible and can hurt just like anyone else in the family. One of the best monologues in the show’s history is when J.R. is standing alone at Bobby’s casket at the end of the funeral: “Never really told you how much you meant to me. All the fights, all that time buttin’ heads with one another. I’m sorry we were never friends. I wish I’d taken time to tell you that I loved you. I do. And you tell Daddy I love him too. Goodbye, Bobby. I miss you.”

Linda Gray’s acting in the first few episodes should have earned her an Emmy. It was amazing to watch her character reach rock bottom and attempt to climb out of the depths of hell. One memorable scene involves Sue Ellen looking at herself in the mirror at a motel room after a night of heavy alcohol consumption and yelling at herself about how terrible of a person she has become. “J.R. is right!” she screams at herself, after learning that her 10-carat diamond ring had been stolen from her while she was passed out in the dingy motel room.

Susan Howard and Steve Kanaly had brilliant scenes involving Donna’s pregnancy, miscarriage, and subsequent attempts to adopt a deaf child.

Pricilla Presley’s acting is….well, yes, it still sucks. Worse than it did in previous seasons.

Bobby’s return in the shower? Well, yes, it was cheesy. But let me just say that this “cliffhanger” and “cliffhanger resolution” was not the worst in the series’ history. The way the writers got rid of Pam at the end of Season 10 was the biggest fraud in the history of the show. After Patrick Duffy opted to return, the writers never felt comfortable writing any character off the show in any permanent fashion. Hence, the explanation that Pam would simply leave her beloved husband and child because of her “vanity” was one of the most stupid explanations to any character’s departure. So, Bobby’s return in the shower, as ridiculous as it may have been, was not as ridiculous as Pamela’s decision to leave her family. That was completely out of character. And THAT is when the show “jumped the shark”.

Give this season a chance. Yes, it becomes irrelevant, but it still has some of the best stories and acting in the show’s entire run. In retrospect, I wish they hadn’t erased this season. However, in light of the need to get Patrick Duffy back and in light of Leonard Katzman’s incredible ego to stick it to those who ran him out of town, the “dream resolution” is not entirely unexpected and somewhat understandable.

Well, here we are finally, at the release of the famous dream season. Now, after my last review where I got down on the last season, I found upon re-watching it that it was really quite good-I think all of Dallas is brilliant in it’s way really. So, this season is different to be sure-Leonard Katzman was gone and the style of the show went very glamorous, very Dynasty-esque, and it is not at all like Dallas of before or after in many ways. Lucy is gone and that doesn’t matter of course, but Bobby is also gone and that does indeed make a difference. The season itself has of course been hampered in retrospect by the fact that we now know none of it really happens. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of interesting twists and turns that keep the season good dramatically. The only question is how you will react to the different ways that the characters speak and act, and that I’ve found is more a matter of personal taste than anything else. I am not going to lie that this is probably my least favorite season of the show for these reasons I’ve listed above-but it still beats almost anything else from other shows, and it’s still Dallas so it gets 5 stars, especially after I was pleasantly surprised by my re-viewing of the last season on DVD. With Barabara Bel Geddes back as Miss Ellie, and also starring Jared Martin as Dusty Farlow, Steve Forrest as Ben Stivers, Deborah Shelton as Mandy Winger, Jenilee Harrison as Jamie Ewing Barnes, Dack Rambo as Jack Ewing, Marc Singer as Matt Cantrell, and John Beck as Mark Graison.

The genre of family-oriented computer animated feature film, invented and pioneered by Pixar Animation Studios, has seen a great decline in the past couple of years. Now, every other movie studio churns out another one in hopes of being the next Toy Story or Finding Nemo. In this reviewer’s opinion, the formula has gotten incredibly stale. It’s the same thing over and over again - Lots of humor and silliness for the kids, with some clever pop-culture references for adults, lots of talking inanimate objects voiced by recognizable and popular celebrities, a song by a bankable pop star. Wrap it all up in a bright, shiny package and advertise it on Nickelodeon and network TV and you’ve got a recipe for success. This formula has now been repeated ad nauseam by the movie studios yet parents, in lieu of more intelligent and creative children’s entertainment, snatch it up. Just look at the crop of upcoming CG family movies slated for 2005. There are at least four, maybe five.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Incredibles! Click Here

However, if there is anything that you can depend on in the dreary world of computer animated movies, it is the name Pixar. Those five letters are quite simply synonymous with quality. They started the genre and still no one does it better. From Toy Story to Monsters, Inc. to Finding Nemo, Pixar has consistently produced astonishingly high quality films in both entertainment and artistic value. Pixar’s latest, The Incredibles was written and directed by Brad Bird who gave us the wonderful 1999 film The Iron Giant. It is yet another staggering success for Pixar Animation Studios.

The Incredibles is not just another fine computer animated movie, it completely reinvents and transcends its tired genre. The film boasts extremely sharp writing and plotting (rewarded with a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award nomination), excellent voice acting, extraordinary conceptual design and, most importantly, the audacity to break from the mold and do something different. This is first hinted at by the film’s rating; The Incredibles is Pixar’s first PG-rated movie. It is not just an assortment of jokes and pop-culture references, it is a fully-realized story focusing on human (sort of) characters and the struggle of living in a society that you don’t fit in with. There are no talking fish, no talking bugs, no talking toys. It’s a real movie with real heart told with extraordinary skill and style. It was well-deserving of its Best Animated Feature Academy Award, however the fact that its only competition was Shrek 2 and Shark Tale diminishes that achievement. Yes, it’s also an incredibly fun story about superheroes with lots of stunts, action, giant robots, superpowers and an evil villain. I found it to be one of the most satisfying, and best, movies of 2004.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Incredibles! Click Here

Don’t be deterred by the fact that it’s computer animated and that it’s from the makers of Finding Nemo. You don’t have to be a child or a parent (I myself am neither) to love this film. It’s a great movie that anyone can love and appreciate.

I have been and shall remain a lifelong fan not only of movies, but of comic books, heroes, etcetera. The delightful and refreshing The Incredibles blends both together for me - heroes and movies.

I’ll be honest - in the past (with the exception of the first 2 Toy Story movies), when a trailer for a Pixar film was released, I was less than enthused. I have, however, seen every Pixar film and loved them all. The trailers never looked appealing to me until the Incredibles. Shrek, Shark Tale, Ice Age - they’ve got zip on Pixar!

Getting back to my review of this film, all I can say is The Incredibles is a winner on all levels. Animation is top notch (increasingly better with each film), voice acting (and the casting selection) is superb, cinematography (even though it’s digital) is exceptional, and the score (especially with The Incredibles) is a perfect fit.

The premise is a fitting portrait of today’s world. All the super heroes go into hiding and melt away into ‘normal life’ because of lawsuits pop up from individuals who didn’t want to be saved, therefore causing a public superhero backlash. Naturally, it doesn’t take long for heroes to re-emerge and once again save the day from terrible peril while being hoisted back into the public spotlight…that’s enough premise/plot…just sit back and delight in the masterfully crafted film by Brad Bird (The Iron Giant) known as The Incredibles.

Whether you’re an adult, child, or man-child, this movie will take you in and make you forget you’re watching a movie. The visuals and story is captivating and well written. After just having suffered through about 1/3 of the 77th Annual Oscars (many thanks to the creators of TiVo), the highlight of the night for me was The Incredibles winning Best Animated Feature of 2004 (and Clint Eastwood winning Best Director and Best Picture for Million Dollar Baby). I was so worried that the vacuous Hollywood types were going to give the BAF Oscar to the vapid Shrek 2. Thank God the voting members have some sense!

From the opening frame to the closing shot, “Klute” is a compelling, adult thriller and character study. It seems to get better with every viewing. When Pennsylvania business executive and family man Tom Grunemann goes missing, friend and detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) agrees to take on the case. His only clue is prostitute Bree Daniels (Jane Fonda) in New York who was associated with a prostitute Grunemann had known and who is at the brunt of harassment calls possibly from Grunemann. As Klute watches Bree, the killer is watching. Although Bree is struggling to leave “the life” (aspiring to act), she is simultaneously drawn to the money, autonomy and emotional control it provides. Klute is brought deeper into Bree’s world of prostitution, paranoia and drugs and unexpectedly he penetrates her emotional walls.

“Klute” is definitely Jane Fonda’s showcase and she is fantastic, netting the Oscar that year against the odds. This may have been her “breakout” role at a time when she was notoriously unpopular because of her involvement in Hanoi, but she has turned in numerous fine performances over the years in films ranging from “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” to “On Golden Pond.” As Bree Daniels, she has a complex character who, as she attests, had some college, and who is vulnerable yet acerbic, impenetrable yet exposed. Whether speaking with her therapist, walking jauntily down the street or turning a trick, Bree as embodied by Fonda is fascinating to watch.

Some mention that the “thriller part” is weak because you know the identity of the killer. I would disagree. Knowing the identity of the killer is part of the suspense. In this claustrophobic world of shadowy stalkers and anonymity, it’s like knowing the bomb is under the table, as Hitchcock once said. The claustrophobia and isolation also are deeply reflective of both New York and the character of Bree Daniels, revealing the irony of her “freedom.” Surveillance tapes also figure largely in this film and were a big thing in the 70’s. They would also figure largely in Watergate.

Aside from Fonda and Sutherland, the supporting players (including Roy Scheider and Jean Stapleton) perfectly embody their roles and add to the authenticity, and there is also a great tingly soundtrack by Michael Small. It’s one of the finest films to come out of the 70’s. I also get a kick out of seeing Fonda reading “Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs” which was a rage in the 70’s. Let it all hang out, baby!

Oh come on, any movie where Roy Scheider plays a PIMP is good in my book!

Actually, I tend to rent these older films and then take a couple weeks before I watch them. I was a bit reluctant heading in to Klute, but was hooked from the opening credits. I think I liked the same things that people disliked about it. There is a certain uncomfortable weirdness that permeates through this film, that was not in the least bit accidental. Donald Sutherland plays his part to the hilt! I loved those scenes where he wouldn’t say anything at all. I get the impression, that we are so used to a certain style of dective films these days (lots of acrobatics and explosions and shooting) that we fail to appreciate subtle films such as this. I’ve never been a fan of Jane Fonda. I’ve really had no impression of her whatsoever. This film, however, really changed that. She was FULLY deserving of her Oscar for this role.

Anyway, I highly recommend this film. Buy it. Now!

I liked this film because to me it was different than most westerns which feature gunslinging, tobacco-chewing tough guys. There’s a bit of history included here, and an interesting combination of it at that. At the end of the Civil War, soldier of the north, John Wayne, and soldier of the south, Rock Hudson, meet up in Mexican territory, they and their followers still holding resentment and distrust for each other. When the Southerners are trapped and held prisoner by Mexican revolutionaries, the Yanks come to their rescue, bringing 2000 wild horses for ransom, though they had spent the last few years catching them for profit. They have to fight their way through French soldiers who try to block them because the horses will be used by the Mexicans in their war effort against the French. The acting is not exceptional, but the characters do have some charm. My interest in this film is for the glimpse into its historical setting.

Definitely a great Post-Civil War Western and one of my personal favorites, The Undefeated, brings to the screen such heavyweights as John Wayne and Rock Hudson, whose performances are outstanding, making this movie one of the best of its kind. The acting, the battles and the costumes are all wonderful!
The Undefeated is a movie about honor, bravery, and heroes from a time long gone.
A great movie indeed!

Like most American folks (and some non-American folks to be sure) who grew up watching 80s-era ‘toonage, my first look at the Macross series was in the form of the first chapter of Robotech. And even though I still hold a certain degree of sentimental nostalgia for the latter show, I gotta admit I like the original uncut Japanese version a fair bit more. Well, except for the background score– the music used for Robotech seemed a better fit in my opinion, and wasn’t quite as melodramatic as the original score. Sorry if this offends you anime purists out there, but– no wait, actually I’m not the least bit sorry. I could give less than two doots what’cha all think…

Naturally, the biggest attraction of the original Macross is the chance to see all the stuff that Harmony Gold (the show’s North American producers) changed and edited out of the series to conform to the various kidvid standards of the day. You know, excess violence, naughty bits, a smattering of mature situations and language situated somewhere in PG & PG-13 territory, and stuff that might not have translated well to audiences on the opposite side of the Pacific and elsewhere. I saw a smattering of such scenes and situations (a few examples include slight extensions of the deaths of Roy Focker & Kakizaki (”Ben Dixon” to you RoboPhiles out there), allusions to Roy’s battles with the bottle, and a few naughty thoughts from Max during his first encounter with Milia in the video arcade), but they made up a rather miniscule part of the “restored” bits. The vast majority of no-longer-missing moments were rather innocuous (mostly incidental or “slice-of-life” scenes), and led me to wonder why they’d been shortened or removed from Robotech in the first place. Probably to help the networks airing the series cram in another toy commercial or two between the mid-show eyecatches…

I was also curious to see the results of AnimEigo’s extensive restoration efforts that I’d been reading about so much on Robotech.com and other anime news sites for months before its debut on North American DVD. Although I still saw a few ever-so-slight flaws here ‘n’ there, I thought they did a really good job making the show as clean and pristine as it likely was when it was initially broadcast. Just compare any of the restored eppies to their Robotech counterparts, and you’ll see a fairly significant difference between the two in terms of picture clarity!

Although the platters in this set lack any real special bonus features aside from show production and restoration credits, the liner notes, which look sorta like mini file folders (one even has a subject tabs) come close to making up for it:

- Disc four’s mini-file includes brief character profiles of Captain Bruno J. Global (”Henry Gloval” to all you Robotech freakos out there), Zentradi Commander Britai Kridanik, Kamjin Kravshera “The Ally-Killer” (Khyron “The Backstabber”), and Exedol Folmo (Exedore). The basic info given for each character includes age, height and weight (in metric measurements, natch), occupation, the episode each debuted in, the person who voiced the character, and… blood type??? Hey, that’s kinda personal don’cha think? Seriously, I’ve never understood the deal with anime characters having blood types (shouldn’t it be ink types? Heh, get it? Hee hee…). But then, I’ve never really delved into the technical world of anime, or the culture it reflects, all that much. And why the hey does almost every Japanese anime character I’ve ever seen not look even remotely Japanese? What’s up with all the honky-envy in animeland??? If there’s anybody out there who can give me the 411 on these bits o’ strangeness to me, please do so, willya? Thanks…

Anyway, let’s get on with the review. Also included with disc four’s files are production notes on episodes 13 to 20. Brief synopses of each eppie’s evolution from concept to production are given, as well as the disclosure of various in-gags and sci-fi references one can find in each show, if one looks hard enough.

- Disc five’s file includes technical specs and descriptions of various mecha seen in the series, including the SDF-1 Macross super-fortress, the VF-1 Valkyrie fighter/battroid flown by Roy Focker, the RoiQuomni Glaug (AKA Kamjin’s battle pod), and the much-more-common Zentradi Reguld battle pod.

- The sixth platter includes production notes on episodes 21 to 28 of the show, and the lyrics to two Minmei (Ijima Mari) songs. Both the English translation and the anglicized Japanese pronunciation of each song’s lyrics are given.

- The only real disappointment I have with this collection is that they weren’t able to put Macross and Robotech together into an all-in-one presentation, like Harmony Gold did a few years back when they put out the Robotech: Perfect Collection VHS series, featuring two Robotech eppies and their corresponding Japanese (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada) counterparts. It would’ve been nice to have something that appealed to both the RoboPhile and the anime purist in me, without havin’ to take up quite as much shelf space in my video cabinet. No such luck, I’m afear’d; the licensing & rights situations just didn’t pan out between the companies involved in the show’s production & distribution. Them’s the breaks in life…
