I am not a soccer/football fan. I don’t work with the homeless. Yet when I saw this offering at the Impact Film Festival during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, I was intrigued. An *international* sporting event–for *homeless* people? Frankly, I was stunned to discover anyone had managed any sort of multinational cooperation on behalf of the disenfranchised at all, let alone from such war-torn and poor countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya, etc. Still, I was entranced to see the reactions of these “lost” men as they worked toward this single goal, and in the process acquired many of the skills they needed to better their lives, or, at the very least, the hope to hold out for a better future. My favorite part was seeing the reactions as these men, few of whom had ever left their home cities, let alone their countries, as they discovered their similarities as well as their differences with their counterparts from around the world. Not everyone went home with a trophy, but everyone returned with something infinitely better–pride.

Often times people are quick to associate the homeless with being a lazy segment of society who really chooses nothing better in life than the lot that they may have been handed and perhaps even maintain a belief that if the homeless just showed a bit more motivation that they would be able to pull themselves out of the ruts they have found themselves in. While this may be true for a percentage of the homeless population there is a large segment of the homeless that because of no fault of their own find themselves living without a place to reside in abject poverty.

And while we often times hear about the horror stories that come associated with the homeless population, there is also some remarkable stories out there about the homeless and some of the not so terrible paths that some of them have chosen to take.

In the film Kicking It, directors Susan Koch and Jeff Werner film and document a usually unheard of annual event known as the Homeless World Cup. Hosted in Cape Town, South Africa, the Homeless World Cup brings together homeless soccer players to represent the nations that they call home.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kicking It! Click Here

Narrated by Colin Farrell, Kicking It is a documentary that follows the aspirations of six homeless soccer players from nations across the globe. While some have been addicted to drugs and have turned to soccer to turn their lives around, some of the others in the film simply find themselves homeless either due to war or pure poverty in the nations that are their homeland. With soccer players coming from nations like Ireland, Afghanistan, Kenya and the United States it is interesting to see the dynamics that take place between the young homeless men from each of the represented nations.

The movie does a good job at showing how the Homeless World Cup really does help to transcend the typical stereotypes cast toward the homeless and instead seeks to show how this event puts aside the negativity of the title “homeless.”

One of the best scenes in the documentary is when the teams march through the streets of Cape Town in a similar fashion to opening night of the Olympics with one person proudly holding their nation’s flag while the rest of the team marches along. There is some friendly banter back and forth between the teams but it is a very real testament to the fact that really all that matters at that very moment is playing soccer. Social issues, economics and politics are all put aside while the teams are at the Homeless World Cup.

Kicking It does a very good job and raising awareness to an event that honestly I had no idea took place. It is interesting to learn that such an event actually brings homeless people from across the globe together in one location to share in a commonality as simple but as invigorating as a game of soccer.

The film does a good job setting up the entire World Cup scenario as it does bring the viewer into the domestic lives of the athletes participating. There are interviews that take place in the homelands of each of the competing teams that are documented and while there is footage of the soccer that is played back home by the homeless teams pre-World Cup it is perhaps the interviews that focus on the individual outside of the realm of soccer that really is quite interesting.

The only down side to the film is that there are times when the movie becomes a bit too slow and perhaps drawn out unnecessarily. If the movie focused more on the interviews of the individuals alone then perhaps it would not seem this way but there are times when it almost seems like the movie needed a bit of a jolt to get back to the main purpose of the film.

The overall reason for creating this film to draw attention to something that certainly does not receive enough attention was certainly achieved by this film. There is a clear purpose to this film and the message comes across in a way that is both interesting and quite enjoyable. Certainly the Kicking It title has several meanings that all could relate to the film but at the end of the day putting everything else aside in the worlds around them what Kicking It really boils down to is nothing more than a common love for playing soccer.

I’ll admit, I have a morbid fascination with serial killer movies. They harness a raw energy that is almost overwhelming. There is often a strange connection with the victims, the detectives, and sometimes even the killers themselves(or is it just me?). Plus there is a stark fear generated by recognizing a pattern and watching people struggle to prevent further mayhem.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Alphabet Killer! Click Here

THE ALPHABET KILLER is a pretty well-crafted, fictional tale. It’s derived from some unsolved murders that took place in Rochester, NY, during the early 70’s. A few young girls with matching initials would turn up dead in nearby towns that were spelled with the same first letter (i.e. Carla Castille in Churchville, Wendy Walsh in Webster).

A female detective(Eliza Dushku) is on the case, and she quickly becomes obsessed with cracking it. Actually, she’s the one that starts to crack. She gets completely consumed, the mystery eats at her mind as she starts talking to herself and hallucinating (same thing happens to me when I watch reality TV shows).

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Alphabet Killer! Click Here

Anyway, the movie takes a pretty dramatic shift early on when this woman loses control and attempts suicide. She is diagnosed with scizophrenia and admitted to a mental hospital.

Several times throughout this movie, we’re shown the visions that this crazy woman sees–ghastly dead children that constantly haunt her. This is done for shocking effect, but I thought it was completely overdone. Kinda seemed like a ripoff of a Japanese ghost story film.

The story then proceeds as the police are completely baffled by the subsequent Alphabet murders. The mentally unfit cop is put back on the case, possibly due to her past romantic relationship with the chief. And of course, crazy is not something you can just sell on amazon.com.

Director Rob Schmidt does a decent job at mounting suspense. This film attempts to be dark, but doesn’t completely succeed. It is interesting as a psychological descent into madness. I thought the cast did a very solid job. This has no gore or reenactment of the murders themselves, so some might get bored. Worth a rental.

Well, it’s hard for me to give a movie more than three stars if I can figure out the ending (right down to the smallest detail) mid way through. This movie wanted to be good, it really did. It wanted to hang with the likes of se7en and Silence of the Lambs (given that’s a really big “want”), but in the end this movie will dwindle into renter’s obscurity.

The director, Rob Schmidt, does manage a few intriguing moments coupled with a touch of suspense, but if you really pay attention you’ll solve this riddle with ease.

On a side note, I still can’t take Cary Elwes seriously. He was great in movies like “Robinhood: Men in Tights” and the classic “The Princess Bride”, but movies like Saw left me laughing hysterically when I should have been cringing with fear and angst (the desperate reaching for the phone scene still makes me laugh). Albeit his performance here was much better than Saw, I still struggle with him in serious roles. As for Timothy Hutton and Eliza Dushku, both are strong actors and did the best they could with what they were given.

In the end I’m rating this film 3 stars (would have been 2.5 had it not followed an even worse film–HORSEMAN staring Dennis Quaid. More to follow on that travesty!)

I love the Planet Earth series. Since it was too expensive for me to buy the entire series, I bought disc 1 because it includes “From pole to pole” which is summarization of the entire series and has some spectacular photographing. If you really love this series but are unsure about dropping $50+, get this. It’ll satisfy you.

The DVD Planet Earth, Vol.1 arrived in less than a week from the date of purchase, and arrived in the best of conditions. I was completely blown away with the HD and sound clarity that over came my home.

First is Where the Wild Things Are, a story of a boy having a dream about friendly monsters after being sent to his room for punishment. The illustrations are bold and the reading and accompanying sound and music add to the story. Next is In the Night Kitchen, which is read and sung. The tune is very catchy. One note, this is also a dream story. As the boy, Mickey, dreams he is falling his pajamas fall off. The nudity is not graphic, but you could skip that story if it bothers you. The rest of the stories are from the Nutshell books, which Carole King put to music for her project Really Rosie. These tunes are absolutely wonderful. Your children will sing along and sing them other times, too. Chicken Soup With Rice seems to be the favorite of my little library patrons. They will sing it any time they spot the book. And, these are good songs that adults enjoy as well, not cloyingly obnoxious kiddie songs that will fray your nerves. The Nutshell books are Chicken Soup With Rice, Pierre, One Was Johnny, and Alligators All Around.

This DVD is definitely on my “must have” list for my library’s DVD collection in our children’s room.

My family has had this product for about 20 yrs, since it was on VHS tape! The songs are awesome, the animation is wonderful, Carole King is awesome. We still love these songs! Your kids will enjoy it too.

The second movie in Columbia’s newest wave of World War II movies (along with “The Caine Mutiny”) is the 1961 Academy Award-winning film for Best Special Effects, “The Guns of Navarone,” which stars Gregory Peck as Keith Mallory, the leader of a group of British commandos tasked with destroying two gigantic German anti-ship guns.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Guns of Navarone! Click Here

The British are desperate to evacuate 2,000 soldiers from the Aegean island of Kiros, with the only sea route through a stretch of water commanded by the guns that are encased inside a massive cliffside bunker that is immune to air attack.

Based on the best selling novel by Alistair (Where Eagles Dare) MacLean, Mallory has been working on occupied Crete for two years and as an expert mountaineer is the perfect choice to ferry the team to the only part of Navarone not monitored by the Germans - a 400-foot cliff.

Joining Peck is David Niven as explosives expert John Anthony Miller and Anthony Quinn as a Greek resistance fighter.

MacLean is known for being able to weave together a great story and this movie is consistently entertaining. In fact the film was already afforded a respectable special release on DVD in 2000. Columbia though have outdone themselves with this 2-disc set by adding a second audio commentary and four new documentaries.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Guns of Navarone! Click Here

The original release included a rather dry, faltering, but informative commentary by director J. Lee Thompson, a smattering of archival featurettes of varying quality and an anecdotal documentary on the making of the picture featuring on-camera interviews with Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, James Darren and J. Lee Thompson named “Memories of Navarone” and running at 29:34. It’s a nice, breezy documentary and entertaining - detailing some of the experiences the cast had working on the picture.

However this new release includes a lively commentary with historian Stephen J. Rubin who mentions that this film started the trend of Hollywood going outdoors. Up until this time most movies were filmed on the studios backlot, whereas this movie was filmed on the island of Rhodes. He also discusses the cast (including a very young Richard Harris). Rubin also discusses some of the differences between the MacLean novel and the movie - which appear to be a number of changes to characterization and details some of the criticisms of the movie when it was released - including the fact that the actors were too old to play commando’s, many being as they were in their 40s and 50s. Though Rubin quickly adds that he feels it was cast perfectly.

Also included are two new documentaries, the first of these “Forging the Guns of Navarone” runs at 13:58 and includes on camera interviews with Eve Williams-Jones (the former wife of producer Carl Foreman) and Assistant Director Peter Yates (who himself went on to become a very successful director in his own right). Apparently Thompson was not the original director for the project and Yates credits Thompson for his ability to jump straight into a film that had already shot much of its second unit work as well as his ability to manage so many big name actors. Yates also reveals that despite their on-screen animosity towards each other, both Niven and Peck got along well together determined to have as much fun as possible on the picture. Yates also recounts how the crew would refer to it as “The biggest B-feature ever made.”

The second new documentary “The Ironic Epic of Heroism” runs longer at 23:38 and is essentially an on-camera analysis of the movie by noted Film Historian Sir Christopher Frayling (who was mistakenly credited with providing an audio commentary in the press release for this DVD release). Frayling is quite engaging as he recounts such facts as Foreman’s initial reluctance to handle the project. Foreman once said that he was incapable of making a movie that did not make statements and he initially saw the MacLean book as a simple action adventure. It was not until he re-read the novel that he realized it could serve to make statements about the futility of war and the ability of war to bring out the best in people.

Frayling also reflects on the fact that the movie was the first global production caper-style World War II movie to be played as an action adventure in a style he describes as “incredibly innovative.”

Also included on this new release is the restored intermission with score that was seen in some European cities (it is listed as an extra since it is not part of the official cut of the movie) and featurettes on the Dimitri Tiomkin score which details the subtle differences throughout the movie and a fascinating look at the UCLA restoration.

The restoration featurette details the tortured path towards restoring a film that was in such terrible shape that they needed several sources of original negative, both from Columbia and a private collector. In an example of the work the UCLA team had to do, the print they were provided by Columbia had the plane crash at the beginning of the movie happen in broad daylight. This apparently is how most people have seen the scene in recent years. That was until one of the eagle-eyed team at UCLA noticed that one of the trucks had it’s headlights on and wondered why. Sure enough they were able to track down a copy of the print from a private collector that showed that the crash happened at night with the screen various shades of blue - and that is how it was restored.

In another instance the print UCLA had also had the infamous dubbing of Richard Harris where the censor had the word “bloody” replaced with “ruddy” for some of the screenings in the UK (the word “bloody” is considered a swear word in the UK). The UCLA team prevailed again and were able to locate a copy of the correct audio still intact).

On a sidenote the DVD also affords fans of Tiomkin the opportinity to hear the opening sequence sans the narrative as a special feature on the second disc. This apparently is a special feature that had been requested for years.

The Guns of Navarone is a wonderful film that touches upon the issue of how difficult it can be to make moral choices during the course of a war. The screenplay is fascinating in the sense that every major character in the film has their own notions of just how far they should go in applying the necessary force “to get the job done” in a war.

The movie is about six saboteurs who must destroy two gigantic guns, which present a danger to the Allied Navy. At the very beginning of the movie, viewers immediately have their first taste of a moral dilemma when Commodore Jensen, the organizer of the mission, has to decide between sending six qualified men to an almost disastrous and suicidal mission or simply scrapping the mission and leaving 2,000 trapped British soldiers to a certain doom. Commodore Jensen sees the choice as a foregone conclusion and thus resorts to lying to the leaders of the mission in order to boost their confidence. Jensen however does feel the pains of leadership as he tells a fellow officer “I’m just a man who has to send men off to die”.

The six saboteurs each have their unique specialties and views of morality. The first saboteur is Captain Mallory, the best mountain climber in the world and a competent linguist. Captain Mallory is a soldier who now has a utilitarian view of the world and no longer sees the world as black or white. The second saboteur is Major Roy Franklin who is known for his luck and determination. Roy is as focused to the mission as Mallory, only he does not appear to be so in the eyes of his friend Corporal Miller, the third saboteur. Corporal Miller is the self-righteous chemical explosives expert whose philanthropic perception of the world directs his loyalty only to his friends and himself. The fourth is Private Brown “the Butcher of Barcelona” whose specialties are working with engines and using a knife. Although Brown is a seasoned veteran with many kills under his belt, he has become wary of the war. The fifth saboteur is Colonel Stavros. Stavros, like Mallory and Franklin, focuses to the task at hand, but is also ever thoughtful of his personal vendettas. Finally, the last saboteur is Private Pappadimos, whom Jensen describes as a “born killer”.

The moral views of the six saboteurs will clash with each other several times during the movie as they debate about how to conduct a war and deal with human life. The moral perceptions even prove to be the undoing of some of the men. The beauty of the movie is that ultimately the ongoing theme of morality further extends to the two women who later join the mission. Even the Germans are not exempt from this theme as the “normal” German soldier’s character contrasts itself sharply from that of the inhumane SS officer.

It is not surprisingly to find that many world leaders enjoy watching The Guns of Navarone, since here is a film that touches upon an issue that is constantly ever-present in their minds. The burden of choosing the fates of others is after all, a burden that is felt by both the commander and the individual soldier alike.

The superbit version of The Guns of Navarone is an improvement over the first regular DVD release. The noticeable improvement is found mainly in the sound. A particular standout scene in terms of sound is where Stavros uses his sniper rifle to give cover against the advancing German Army. The superbit picture quality while an improvement over the regular DVD release, is not as noticeably good as the superbit sound quality.

My daughter loves this movie. It has four episodes, plus a bonus Higgleytown Hereos. If your child is under 6 and has access to the Disney Channel this means a lot to you. The songs are catchy and the messages are good. I have seen this DVD about- oh a million times- and it is still watchable. I would recommend this to any parent with children under 7.

My 2yr old loves JoJo because she has songs in every episode and does different actions to each song. This is an adorable DVD and each episode features some sort of animal. It has one with Goliath brushing his teeth, a farm episode and others. My daughter will watch this many times over (and we can’t brush teeth without singing Goliath’s brush your teeth song now).

Now that the format wars are over and Blu Ray has won out over HD TV, I have taken the high def plunge. And the first thing that I have purchased in Blu Ray is PUSHING DAISIES. It won’t be out until September, but for symbolic reasons I made this my first purchase in the format. The series is so visually stunning that it is perfect for high def presentation.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season! Click Here

Season One of PUSHING DAISIES ended prematurely. Sadly, the show, which was supposed to run through 22 episodes, has ended at 9. Many shows have been adversely affected by the WGA strike, but except for FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (which not only is going to be cancelled, but did not even get to wrap up its final season, so that it will end with the narrative dangling, an unfitting end to one of the most brilliant shows on TV) none as much for my money as PUSHING DAISIES. This is simply one of the most original, extraordinary shows in the history of television. I awaited the arrival of each of the nine episodes comprising Season One like many await the release of highly anticipated films. That we got only the fraction of a season is heartbreaking.

In case anyone questions whether the season is indeed over, creator and producer Bryan Fuller has stated bluntly that the show will not resume production until next summer, when they will start work on Season Two. And to make it all even more definite, this past week it was announced that Anna Friel, who plays Chuck on the show, will very shortly start filming LAND OF THE LOST with Will Ferrell. You can’t shoot new episodes if your female lead is unavailable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season! Click Here

What makes this so heartbreaking is how incredibly fresh and original this show was from the very first episode. I was enthralled from the very first seconds. As the camera moves up from underneath the earth, through the roots of the plants and grass just under the surface, and then up to reveal a vividly yellow field of flowers through which young Ned is running, I was completely entranced. Everything about the show affected me in similar fashion from the music, to the extraordinary use of color (the color is what causes many people to compare it to AMELIE), to the relentless number of wonderful sets. I’ve never seen a show that I have found so visually exciting.

And luckily the writing and the acting is every bit as good as the art design. It is almost impossible to over praise the writing on the show for two reasons. First, when you watch the first episode, it is so stunningly good that your immediate reaction is: they can’t possibly keep this level of excellence up. Yet, they do. In fact, the show doesn’t merely stay as good as the pilot (or “Pie-lette,” as it is titled), it gets better. The show doesn’t merely have a brilliant premise, but has a plan. Although we’ve had only 9 episodes, any viewer will definitely get the sense that this show is going someplace very specific. Second, the show features some of the wittiest dialogue ever found on television. Many compare the dialogue to that on THE GILMORE GIRLS, both for its immense cleverness and wonderful wordplay, but for its sheer quantity. Without doubt those two shows probably have more words per minute than any shows ever previously seen. (Interestingly, some of PUSHING DAISIES is filmed on the part of the back lot upon which THE GILMORE GIRLS was filmed.) Part of the reason for this is that any spots that on other shows would result in silence on PUSHING DAISIES provides an opportunity for the Narrator, who embellishes the story in marvelous fashion. Other shows have featured narrators, but in my opinion only ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT does so quite so well.

PUSHING DAISIES features a wonderful if somewhat compact ensemble cast. Lee Pace, whom many may know from an earlier Bryan Fuller series WONDERFALLS (on which he played the main character’s brother), plays Ned aka The Pie Maker, who “isn’t like the other boys,” in that whenever he touches a dead thing he brings it back to life, with two caveats. First, if he touches that dead thing (or person) a second time, they will be dead forever. Second, if he doesn’t touch it or them again within 60 seconds, something else must die in its place. Anna Friel plays Ned’s great childhood love Chuck aka Dead Girl, who is brought back to life by Ned after she was murdered. Of course, this means that Ned and Chuck can never touch directly, which is, as Olive Snook points out, tragic (”notwithstanding big ticket items like genocide and death”). The outrageously talented Kristin Chenoweth plays Olive. Although one of the great Broadway musical talents of her time, neither TV nor the movies have found a way to take advantage of her. Until now. At first I was perplexed why they would cast such a huge talent in what was clearly the second female lead, but as the series goes along Olive quickly became one of my favorite characters. And Kristin even sang a song, performing “Hopelessly Devoted to You” in one of the season’s highlights. Ned’s partner in solving crime, the delightfully named Emerson Cod, is played by Chi McBride. Emerson is hands down the funniest, most delightful character on the show and perhaps a majority of the funniest lines on the show are uttered by McBride. Chuck’s aunts are played by two more Broadway stars, Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Greene. The Narrator is performed by Jim Dale, who is perhaps best known as the reader of the Harry Potter books on CD. For me he is one of the most wonderful things about the show, providing precisely the right texture and background to every scene. But one other performer has to be mentioned, or rather a pair of performers. I can’t tell them apart and I don’t know the name of the second “actor,” but Orbit and another Golden Retriever play Ned’s dog Digby. Orbit played JD (short for Just Dog) on an earlier Bryan Fuller series, DEAD LIKE ME. I have no idea how they get the reactions on film that “Digby” makes to things that happen around him, but to watch him you’d swear he really is acting. My favorite Digby scene might be his interaction with Olive during her singing of “Hopelessly Devoted.”

As much as I love this show I have to add that I’ve been amazed and perplexed that not everyone I know who has seen it has liked it. Some don’t like the Narrator. Some don’t like the fast-paced dialogue. I simply can’t account for this. PUSHING DAISIES does have a very definite style. I suppose that if the style rubs you the wrong way, you might not like it. But for me and several of my closest friends, this is one of the most magical shows I’ve ever seen. My two all time favorite shows are BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. How much do I love PUSHING DAISIES? Although there have been only 9 episodes, right now I am inclined to say that I love it as much as those two, making it one of my three all time favorite shows. Which is just another reason why I have been so upset by its truncated debut season. But with the writers strike finally about to end (as I write this it has been indicated that the union will vote two days from now on the new contract), I am eagerly looking forward to Season Two. What accidentally turned out to be the final episode of Season One did end on a bit of a cliffhanger and works fairly well as a transition to Season Two. Be sure to watch this to get ready for it.

Obviously, since this title is not yet released, I can only comment on the series itself. There’s really only one thing to say about it: it’s brilliant!

If you enjoyed the deadpan humour of Dead Like Me as well as its more serious and heart warming sides, liked the quirkyness of shows such as Wonderfalls, then I’m certain you’ll enjoy Pushing Daisies.

Lee Pace is wonderful as the good hearted pie maker, Anna Friel couldn’t be more adorable as the - unfortunately dead, but revived - love of his life. Chi McBride is no Mandy Patinkin, but he delivers in his part. Then there’s Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook. She works for the pie maker and is (not so secretly) in love with him. She is probably the most entertaining character on the show and you just can’t help but adore her.

I just hope that Amazon is right this time and the release actually is for all Blu-ray regions, otherwise, I probably won’t be able to enjoy this wonderful show on Blu-ray due it being rather unlikely to be released in Europe. Btw, dear people at Amazon, when are you going to learn that Blu-ray uses different region codes than DVD? There is no region 1 for Blu-ray, it must be region A instead.

And while I’m at it, dear studios and publishers, get rid of the darned region codes altogether. They’ll eventually be overcome also for Blu-ray and they’re just annoying the hell out of those people that actually buy what you have to sell (especially annoying if there’s no chance for a release of a title in the region you happen to live in).

They don’t make movies like this anymore. Released in 1969, “Coming Apart” died fast at the box office (you can get the sad details from the director’s “essay” included on the DVD) and was virtually unseen by anyone for the next 30 years. Its belated release on video should change that, however.

The plot: A psychiatrist (Rip Torn) sets up a hidden camera in his apartment, which covertly records his liaisons with the unsuspecting women who end up in his lair. (Note: this movie is NOT for the kids.) Filmed (in black & white) entirely on a single set, with very little camera movement, it strongly resembles those old Warhol shorts, as well as the ’60s underground flick “David Holzman’s Diary,” which employs roughly the same gimmick. Stars Torn and Kirkland really tear through the scenery–sometimes literally. The deliberately static style gives the proceedings a cozy intimacy and a convincingly “natural” look… but you’ll probably wish, as I did, that it weren’t quite so slow moving. It’s a fairly interesting experiment, though, and a welcome change of pace from the manufactured junk of contemporary Hollywood cinema.

this film is typical of the 60’s movies that tried different approaches just to be different. the film has a lot of sex but isn’t sexy. Rip Torn underplays his role effectively as a womanizer whose story is told through the reflections of a mirror. those who know Torn only from Dodge Ball or Larry Sanders will be interested in seeing him as a young man. The movie reminds of french new wave films of the era and is a little difficult to follow since the premise is that you are watching an 8mm version of his interludes with different women. it isn’t a “feel good story” for the entire family, but if you like different approaches to film, it is worth a look

Kung Fu drastically challenged the conservative, militaristic, and philosophically naive outlook I held as a 20 year old college student and “gung-ho” ROTC cadet in 1972. Now, 36 years later, I have had the opportunity to watch Kung Fu once more, and the impact has been nearly as powerful. I have been disabled for severe depression and anxiety for over 15 years, including close to two years of hospitalization. In all of that time I have barely moved forward–until re-watching Kung Fu. The show has visually reminded me of many things, repeatedly told me by therapists, in such a way that I am once again able to reflect–especially while watching the show–a little more positively on my life.

That is the beauty and mastery of Kung Fu, one of the most intriguing shows ever made: it invokes one to THINK, discuss, and contemplate. The only other show I have seen have such an effect on so many people (nearly 90% of my ROTC class of 207 cadets watched Kung Fu as well as me), is the original two years of Star Trek. BUT, the level and intensity invoked by Kung Fu was immeasurably greater than that of Star Trek. The commentaries and features (see the Comments for listing of these items) often mention how teachers “required” students to watch Kung Fu, and then discussed the episodes in class. In deed, it is the philosophical nature of the show that most appeals to me and many who watch it.

Conversely, I will not deny that the show led me to sign up for Judo classes too (over 50% of my friends signed up for some form of martial arts), but the Karate nature of the show was never that appealing to me. Kung Fu is frequently accredited for “introducing” thousands of people to the martial arts. Unfortunately, many who watch the show or have watched the show have followed the path of what I consider “aggressive” martial arts, forgetting the retrospective nature of true Kung Fu. But, I must believe that if parents watch the show with their children, they can have an opportunity to talk with their children about both aspects of Kung Fu.

Another fabulous feature of the show is that viewers are presented with the reality of bigotry and hate–something that never ends, and is completely pertinent to today’s world. (Please see the Comments for an example of how the mere fact that I lamented–now also in the Comments–that the DVDs are in English only prompted someone “disrespectful to Americans living in AMERICA.”) Again, parents could easily use episodes to discuss and help their children–be they victims, violators, or naive–deal with bigotry and hate.

PLEASE NOTE: Warner Brothers has apparently advertised, and thus Amazon has listed, this set to contain wide-screen formate; see the Comments for more discussion on this. While the Season One episodes have been digitally reformatted “IN A “MATTED” WIDESCREEN FORMAT PRESERVING A THEATRICAL EXHIBITION ASPECT RATIO. ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVs,” all episodes and features in the Season 2 and 3 sets are in fact full screen. The release date (on Amazon and the back of the red slip case for the series) states 2007, but season boxes all state they were done in 2005; so I don’t think there is any difference between the Complete Series Box Set and the single season box sets. On an even sadder note, while Warner Brothers did attempt to improve the quality of the shows and alter the formate, they did so, with varying success, for the first season only. (Again, please see the Comments for more discussion on this matter). For the second and third seasons, Warner Brothers either did nothing or very little to restore the negatives, so the episodes are littered with white specs, scratches, and so on (although I found them no less bothersome than those found when watching a well used copy of a movie showing at a theater; for more discussion on this, see the Comments). That said, one must remain mindful of the fact that “Kung Fu” was filmed for television not the theater, was on a limited budget, and the fact that the negatives, when placed in the vault for storage, were most likely not very high quality to begin with; after all, nobody anticipated cable television syndication, let alone VHS and DVD production when the negatives were stored. On the other hand, this inconsistency in DVD quality (be it television shows or movies) is what I have now come to expect from Warner Brothers: misinformation and little or no care for their consumers; out of seventeen letters I have sent to them with questions, they have never replied to a single one.

All that said and done: Please consider renting (if available) or buying the Kung Fu series, and watch it with family and friends if you have them. “Kung Fu - The Complete Series” includes the award winning Pilot movie and all 62 episodes on 11 discs, starring David Carradine as Kiwai Chang Caine, Philip Ahn as Master Kan, and Keye Luke as Master PO. Special guest stars (some of which I have noted in the Comments) include David’s father John Carradine, Benson Fong, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Don Johnson, Leslie Nielsen, William Shatner, and others. “Kung Fu” is a show that is thought provoking, educational, inspirational, and unforgettable. “Kung Fu” is a show that can be watched over and over–by yourself, with friends, or with your family. There is no other TV show that I would recommend for people of all ages than “Kung Fu”–so, treat yourself with the whole series.

UPDATE–FEBRUARY 22, 2009: It came to my attention while reading “A Kid’s Review–Kung Fu is the best, and this is the best way to own them,” that I failed to mention the great extra features included in each of the three season sets. In particular, in the Season Three Set, there is a fascinating documentary that follows David Carradine and some of his friends on a trip to China, where David is given a Shaolin robe on their visit to the famed Shaolin Temple Monastery, a key location depicted in the series, and David plays his flute on the Great Wall of China while it is snowing. For Kill Bill - Volume One and Kill Bill - Volume Two fans, there is a bonus feature on the Season Two set that features David Carradine having dinner with stars/friends from these two films and the “Kung Fu” series. (See the Comments for more details on other bonus features and special guest stars, including Harrison Ford!).

Also, I feel like this review has become too long in my efforts to answer questions. Therefore, I am going to cut my other updates and place them in a comment. For first time readers, these comments deal with the following: film format and transfer quality for each season; languages and subtitles for the episodes and extra features; the fact that the discs are double sided; more on how the series is packaged; and, bonus features (rather than listing them here). I sincerely apologize if this is an inconvenience for some, but if you look at the comments you will understand just how long this review was getting.

June 14, 2009: I have deleted my response to the individual whose comments have been once again removed by Amazon, as they were out of place without that person’s comments. If you wish to read them, I have saved them and would be happy to send them to you–just go to my Profile to get my email address. And thanks to everyone for making this my most successful, albeit declining in popularity vote percentages. Regardless, if my review sparks interests, then it has achieved one of my objectives.

If this review was not helpful to you, I would appreciate learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide help to potential buyers, not get into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my opinion, could you please say so in the comments and not indicate that the review was not helpful. Thanks.

There are lots of reviews which already talk (extensively) about why Kung Fu was such a great show, and worth owning on DVD. Instead I just wanted to make sure people know what they are getting with this set…

I hesitated to buy this set at first because it had all 3 seasons packaged together, but didn’t mention anything about special features, etc. I wanted to make sure I had the commentaries & featurettes that the individual seasons boasted. Eventually, I bought this version because the price difference won me over (just before the holidays it was $35 + super saver shipping!) and I was pleased to find out that the set contained all 3 seasons as they appear individually, as well as a nice little slip cover to store them all together. The individual seasons & this package are the same, except that this one costs far less.
