DON’T LOOK NOW is a film for people with a particular taste, and the unwary viewer will either be pleasantly or unpleasantly shocked. From a seemingly simple premise — a couple trying to overcome their daughter’s death, and the odd psychic they meet while staying in Venice — director Nicholas Roeg creates a thriller/horror movie/dazzling puzzles that slowly infects your mind and then shocks you with its bizarre twists.

Be warned: this isn’t a movie for everyone. It relies on visual puzzles and clues and an incredible lot of misdirection for its effect. This might bore some people; it had me riveted with the first scene and held me up through the mind-bending conclusion. Like THE SIXTH SENSE, SLEUTH, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, and THE OTHERS, the film is playing a massive deception on the audience and the characters, engaing in a strange game that pays off in an incredibly satisfying (if devastating) way. Every time you think you know what kind of story you’re watching, the movie starts veering in another direction, and only the finale finally makes the purpose of the plot clear.

Director Roeg, a former cinematographer, crafts an eerie vision of Venice as damp, mouldy, and crumbling, and his visual compositions have a startling quality that adds to the bizarre and alienated moodof the film. Although few movies have directly copied the story of DON’T LOOK NOW, its directorial style has become the standard for such filmmakers as David Lynch, M. Night Shyamalan, and David Fincher.

This is a landmark piece of work and worth viewing if you enjoy films full of mystery and intelligence (for example, the movies I listed above) and unusual visual style.

One of the creepiest films ever made. This one stays with you, and all of the participants are crucial to the film’s effect, so it’s not just the artful photography and editing. The beautiful Julie Christie, always a bit mysterious, has an amazing sex scene with Donald Sutherland (they play a husband and wife in this film), that is intercut with shots of the two getting dressed afterward. Erotica, not pornography, although it treads a thin line. Inspired from start to finish, Sutherland’s slow motion fall from a scaffold is foreshadowed earlier by Christie’s slow motion blackout at a restaurant table. There are many moments of cinemagraphic brilliance throughout, and Roeg’s triumph here is how he manages to take a rather simple story and make it seem more complex and deep than it really is. Because the film is so visually stimulating, the shocking ending is not critical to its success; in other words, knowing what’s going to happen doesn’t matter, as it would if the rest of the movie weren’t so stunning. This isn’t just one of the best horror pictures ever, it’s a very good movie, above categorization.

Love and Honor (Bushi no Ichibun) is the last in director Yoji Samada’s great trilogy of movies about a dying class and the ordinary people caught up in the changes. These three films are not tragedies, but somber stories of rigid, unfair class structures enforced by ferocious standards of loyalty, obligation and obedience. Now, at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, Japanese society for those at the top is crumbing. The samurai are warriors who have had no wars to fight for generations; those unwilling or unable to adapt will become irrelevant. The farmers remain important because they produce food. The artisans are important because they produce products. The merchants are the bottom caste because they apparently produce nothing. Of course, they dirty their hands with commerce and, thus, produce wealth. They will come to rule Japan. More and more samurai are leaving their caste to become merchants.

For now, however, the samurai class in its increasing irrelevance is increasingly parasitic. Samurai ideals of honor and obligation are stained by opportunism, venality and self-interest. Honor remains for many, but it can be hard for those, even samurai, who must try to live their lives in an unfair world.

Shinnojo Mimura (Takuya Kimura) is a young, lower-caste samurai who earns a modest stipend as a food taster for his clan lord. He and his wife, Kayo (Rei Dan) are happy and in love. He has prospects to be an expert swordsman. He hopes to start his own school. Then he tastes some shellfish and becomes seriously ill. He survives but is blind. He may very well lose his stipend, his house and the ability to support his mother and relatives. They plead with Kayo to go to clan captain Shimada and beg for help. When Shimada suggests that he would be wiling to help her husband in exchange for her intimate favors, her world and her love for her husband are placed at great risk. Her husband’s mother and family, anxious about maintaining their own status, urges upon Kayo a sacrifice of Kayo’s honor. Kayo, like her husband and all the protagonists in Yamada’s other two films, have limited options. When her blind husband realizes that their relationship is subtly changing, he is resolved to secure her honor and his own…a blind samurai dueling with an experienced senior officer.

Perhaps it’s enough to say that this film, so filled with autumnal somberness, ends on a note of spring. I liked it a lot. Serious films do not always require a sad finish.

Yoji Yamada’s trilogy, all based on stories by Shuhei Fujisawa, are The Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei) (2002), The Hidden Blade (Kakushi Ken Oni no Tsume) (2004) and Love and Honor (Bushi no Ichibun) (2006). They can be watched in any order. The movie is beautifully photographed and the DVD transfer is first rate. There are no extras.

LOVE AND HONOR (a.k.a. Bushi No Ichibun) is the third chambara period film by Yoji Yamada. After the two award-winning samurai films by this acclaimed director, the expectations for his third and last samurai film is extremely high. Thankfully, Yamada once again delivers; “Love and Honor” has won numerous film awards, cementing the director’s status as one of the best chambara directors of the modern age. “Twilight Samurai”, “Hidden Blade” and “Love and Honor” have different storylines and characters, they all share the same ideals of the samurai code: Honor, Duty and Loyalty. Also, the three films have an ace in their sleeves; Family and Responsibility.

Synopsis derived from the region-3 DVD back cover:

It is only a short time after Shinnojo Mimura (Takuya Kimura) is appointed to the post of food taster that he goes blind after a shellfish that brings on food poisoning is a accidentally put into a lunch for the Lord of the Clan.

Until this time Shinnojo, as a lower-ranked samurai has lived a thrifty but happy life with his wife Kayo (Rei Dan). However, the fact is that Shinnojo is unable to work in the castle any longer. Kayo is told to approach the domain’s Head clerk, Toya Shimada (Mitsugoro Bando), and ask him to use his good offices in having Shinnojo’s stipend maintained. In return, he has demanded her body. Out of anger and despair, Shinnojo divorces her. Eventually Shinnojo learns the truth. Shimada merely took his pleasure with Kayo; not one word did he say about how Shinnojo was to be treated to the Lord. Shinnojo cannot stand it a moment longer. He challenges Shimado to a duel.

Once again, this film explores the reality of corrupt authority figures in feudal Japan. At first impression, I thought; “Blind Samurai? Is this a Zatoichi rip-off?!” But no, the film sidesteps that impression and the director has put together an involving tale of human inner strength and heroism. Not just from Mimura’s character, but also from Kayo’s character. While the first two films are partly a tale of love forbidden by social status, Yamada now explores the relationship of a petty samurai with his devoted wife. This is a welcome approach, as it is a very admirable effort that also delves into the loyalty and devotion of the Japanese wife during feudal times. After all, I remember the old adage; “Behind every great man is a great woman”. People may argue that Kayo’s character was indeed confused, that the steps she took were totally unnecessary. However, I believe the director wanted to express the desperation of those wives during that period. Believe me, women during those days were extremely devoted to their husband. I am happy to say that besides focusing on the samurai ideals, it also focuses on the strength of the Japanese woman. The film leans toward the character study of the lead characters as well as a period study of feudal Japan.

The film’s proceedings and cinematography are similar to its two predecessors. The film is beautiful to watch and the way it is structured and paced is remarkable. True, the film may get a bit predictable in the middle but it is to the director’s and the cast’s credit that viewers will not even lose a tiny bit of interest. There is one swordfight in the film so this third chambara film may disappoint those looking for highly fast-paced swordplay. Some people may also argue that even a skilled samurai without his sight would be helpless against another swordsman, but the way the duel was choreographed and executed was very convincing. It is very realistic and follows the style in swordplay in the previous two chapters.

Aside from Yamada’s excellent direction, the cast gives an excellent performance. Takuya Kimura has definitely matured in his acting abilities. It is difficult to play a handicapped role, let alone one who is a blind swordsman. Kimura thoroughly expresses the suppressed anger and frustration in the sequences. His performance in the duel was very convincing that I felt his fear and determination when he clashed with his opponent. The duel may be short but it had so much emotional impact that I was immersed in the footage. Rie Dan truly fit the character of the disadvantaged wife. As with the two lead female characters in “Twilight Samurai” and “Hidden Blade”, she had the warm charisma that surely represents the simple devoted wife during the Edo Period. Yoji Yamada seems to always find the right performers for the right role.

Yoji Yamada has once again proven that he isn’t a “one-hit wonder”. I hope that this will not be the last chambara film he directs. While all three films have the common denominators (samurai ideals) that link them together, there are subtle details in all three of his samurai films whose messages cannot be ignored. “Twilight Samurai” expresses humility and family, “Hidden Blade” expresses commitment and choices, “Love and Honor” effectively expresses devotion and forgiveness; all because of the power of LOVE. Yoji Yamada’s samurai trilogy is truly FANTASTIC!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! [4 ½ +Stars]

Seems Bollywood is making its way to Hollywood, and I’m loving every minute of it. From the marvelous crowd-pleaser MONSOON WEDDING to the cheerfully cute LAGAAN, to the upcoming international hit BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, Indian films are making their way to America, and it’s about time (and no, I’m not Indian). In the midst of it all came THE GURU, a wonderful romantic comedy that incorporates sex with Bollywood musicals. Why Universal decided to limit THE GURU’s wide release just days before its theatrical premiere is beyond me. Maybe moving the release date to a less competitive weekend would have been a better answer (The Recruit, Biker Boys, and Final Destination 2 all started on Jan. 31st, 2003). THE GURU is a sweet, good-natured comedy with great performances by the entire cast, some hilarious comedic moments, and cute send-up’s of BOLLYWOOD. The plot is outrageous, the situations are implausible, but the movie is plain FUN. It’s a superb indie-like studio picture that benefits from bright dialogue and the impressive cast. The one thing I would have liked is to have seen more musical moments amidst the craziness…there was definitely potential for them. All in all, THE GURU is a great romantic comedy. Much lighter in tone than MONSOON WEDDING and much more fun (and shorter) than LAGAAN. Although dealing with porno and sex, it is all done tastefully and not as explicitly as it could have been. A wonderful trip to the movies it was!…

I admit, I get hooked easily. This time, it was the opening scene, a dance class full of women in beautiful saris. The dance was the Macarena, and I almost fell off my chair laughing.

After that, the movie gets off to a slow start, with Our Hero (Ram) moving to America, the land of opportunity. The opportunities aren’t quite the ones he expected, or even really wanted. The first was thrust upon him when a faker of a fakir falls down drunk just before a performance. The second happens when he fails to get up for another kind of performance.

Heather Graham does a great job as a warm-hearted woman of debatable morals. Marisa Tomei also does a great job as a warm-hearted woman of debatable judgement. No spoilers, but everyone ends up happy.

It’s sweet, silly amusement. It takes a while to get going, but it’s worth the wait.

‘Final Fantasy’ is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is clear from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already brilliant history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, ‘The Spirits Within’ represents a piece of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The plot is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell bent on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a haunted wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing ‘wave’ based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid’s theories about a Gaia, or planetary spirit, and wants to use a huge orbital laser cannon to destroy the original meteor, possible destroying the earth in the process. The conflict between these points of view and their shattering effects on the planet are the meat of the film.

Captain Gray Edwards, once Aki’s lover, crystallizes this struggle between the material world of violent reaction and the spiritual world of growth and synthesis. The film plays a bit like an evolved ‘Starship Troopers.’ In many ways, it presents the same visual image, and deals with the same issues. The problem for the director and the viewer is to get past the magnificent graphic work to experience the abiding spiritual faith that is its meaning. Ironically, the film itself is a metaphor for the issues it expresses.

It is almost futile to discuss the film’s animation and design. They are so far above what we are used to that the required superlatives sound trite. In essence, the animation staff set out to create something that is even more real than life, and to a great extent, they have succeeded. This hyperrealism, combined with an almost ballet like feeling of choreography create a sense of moment that makes this seem far more than an action film. The overall animation is carefully balanced so as to keep the focus on the characters. Even so, this film has such a sensory effect that the viewer is tempted to forget the plot and simply observe the screen.

The primary DVD provides the film and a whole set of commentaries (directing crew, animation and staging, composer, and production staff), plus the usual trailers, etc. In the special edition, a second disk adds an extensive ‘Making of…’ segment, the entire screenplay and some analysis of character, vehicle, and prop design. Technically, this is an important film, despite its simplistic plot and characters. For the first time, the definition of what is acting and what is animation is being challenged in a thought provoking fashion.

The first time I fired up FF7 on my playstation console 5 years ago, I marveled at the opening cinematics. At that point, I thought it would be the coolest thing if someone made a movie just like it. On July 11 at 4:30pm I witnessed that dream come true.

I could say it was all I was expecting and more, but that wouldn’t be entirely accurate. The games took 40-50+ hours to complete with a story that had numerous twists to the plot and character developement that went far beyond some bestselling novels. While I think it would be great to see a 6 hour Final Fantasy movie that had such an intricate plot, I realize that would be unrealistic for a feature film. All things considered, I think Square did an outstanding job compressing the story into the time allotted.

The script could have been written a little bit better, but I think it was written the way it was so the average movie-goer would keep up with the plot. I know I didn’t have any trouble following Dr. Sid’s theories about Gaia and what the Phantom’s really were. But that could’ve been from playing the games.. I saw sort of the concept in FF7, with everyone and everything having a spirit.

The cg was astounding and tte physics were.. well, close. Although I think in 65 years, we may be able to bend the laws of physics a bit more, so this could possibly end up mimicing real life in 2065. I’ve read some film critics comment about the lack of consistency with the Phantoms, how they can move through walls and suck the life out of someone, yet can be harmed by conventional weapons. Those guns didn’t look conventional to me… energy weapons would have the effect they did. Opinion: those film critics who commented about that didn’t know what they were talking about.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I intend to see it a few more times before it leaves theatres. This quite possibly gets my vote for the Best Movie of All time.

If I were rating this movie solely on quality of the film, it would get one star. if i were rating it solely on how much i love to watch it even though it’s awful, it would get 5 stars. SO I averaged it and got 3.

The dialogue is horrendous, the effects cheesy, the music (not the soundtrack which is great, but the score) indescribably awful. It looks like a made for TV movie.

However- I can’t stop watching it. i saw it 3 times in the theater and pre-ordered my own copy. It entertains me. Plus, Edward is nice to look at… oh, James too. LOVE James. To me this movie is absolutely hysterical- where it doesn’t intend to be. The scene where Edward first sees Bella in class and he looks as if he may throw up on her??? Great! The look that Billy Black and Edward exchange as they pass each other in their cars? Priceless. I love the baseball scene! But the crouch down and prepare to fight stance they take at the end… Can anybody say Power Rangers? But just mentioning all this makes me want to watch it again. I know it makes no sense. It just has that power.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Twilight! Click Here

I should be embarrassed to like this, but I’m not. I will watch it over and over again proudly. I will recommend it to anyone I can. Watch it and love it. But know that it’s terrible and know that it can’t compare to the book and that all of it’s charm is due to it’s cheesiness.

I had heard about the fantasy books by a friend when they first came out but didn’t have the time to look into them. By the time the movie came out, I’d nearly forgotten about the book referral, but asked my hubby to take me as it looked like a good vampire romance flick. The scenery of the Pacific Northwest forests, rivers, and coastline was breathtaking and as a native to this area, it was like going out into my own backyard which made the film that more appealing. I was so captivated by the actors portrayal of the characters (the facial expressions and emotions brought out of the characters by Rob, Kristen, Peter, Nikki, and the rest were mesmerizing) and the depth of the back-story left me desiring more! The very next day after viewing the movie in the theater - I raced to the bookstore to grab the first book. I was hooked, read through all four books (plus went to the authors website to read the extra materials she had posted there) in a week. Then, still not satisfied, went back and saw the movie several more times - IN THE THEATER, something I’ve never felt compelled to do before - because I was so drawn to the characters and the story. This may have been written for the young adult audience but I’m 32 and a parent of four children, and still found the story to be well worth my time.

If you haven’t read the stories, I encourage you to do so. Regardless, this film will be a treasured part of your movie collection and one you’ll be sure to watch several times before you’ll feel satisfied.

This is the way “Patlabor 1″ _should_ have been treated in an English-language release. This film is the foundation of Mamoru Oshii’s signature style, which would be perfected in “Patlabor 2″ and then reach international attention with the later “Ghost in the Shell” and “Innocence” features.

The new translation of the dialogue offers far more detail than the old version from the late ’90s by Manga Entertainment, Bandai Visual USA seems to have really wanted to make a mark with this first release for the new company, and they achieved this.

The film itself is a classic Oshii blend of philosophy and action, based upon the characters he helped introduce with the “Patlabor: The Original Series” OVA, but turning the focus of the show from the adventures of the Patlabor cast to an introspective look at where Tokyo (and humanity in general) was heading. Many elements were far ahead of their time; today threats of killer computer viruses are common; all of us deal with them in our email accounts, but in 1989 the internet was in its early public infancy, and the idea of someone creating a virus to spread death and destruction was a fantastic concept. The fact that humanity’s inventions could so easily be taken from their pure helpful purposes and turned to nefarious ends was a relatively new idea, one which challenged the prevailing viewpoint that humanity would only be helped and assisted by its new technological creations.

This release sets a new standard for how high-profile titles should be released, and I hope that it is a precedent that will be followed commonly. The documentaries on the extra disc were a little underwhelming compared to the standards set by Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” or even the well-conceived and excuted making-of documenatries that came with Pioneer/Geneon’s “WXIII: Patlabor 3″ special edition release.

But the 184-page Patlabor Archives book is a treasure for those interested in how and why “Patlabor 1″ turned out the way it did, detailing much of the history of the film, why it is so different in tone from the Patlabor OVAs and TV series, and the innovative ways that Oshii used to turn the city of Tokyo itself into one of the central characters of the film. I read the entire booklet before watching the new version of the film, and it changed the way I viewed the movie, made me far more conscious of the social commentary that is in fact one of the film’s central themes.

The storyboard is another gem for those who are interested in the process of how an idea for a film is translated into a finished work, and even glancing through it made me more conscious of some of the finer details in the film, things which are so subtle that they may escape detection even after multiple viewings, but because they were specifically laid out in the storyboards were deliberately placed to enhance some aspects of the film.

Is this Limted Edition of the film necessary to enjoy the picture? No, it’s not. Get the new version of the basic movie if all you’re interested in is a great thinking-man’s movie with a few heart-pounding action sequences thrown in for variety’s sake (it _is_ a mecha anime on the surface, after all). The basic film of this Bandai Visual USA version is far superior to the old Manga Entertainment one; if you already own that, you might consider picking up this one, anyway, because this translation mentions an awful lot of details that were left out of Manga’s version. But the Limited Edition’s special features will probably only be of interest to the devoted anime and Patlabor fans, for its illumination of how the anime industry and Mamoru Oshii actually work.

The downside of this, for those who have been following Patlabor for a long time, is that this is the fourth complete English-language cast for the Patlabor characters, a result of four different companies having been responsible for releasing this over time (Manga Entertainment doing the original versions of the first two movies, US Manga Corps doing the OVAs and TV Series, and Pioneer/Geneon doing WXIII: Patlabor 3).

I got interested into Mamoru Oshii’s work after I saw the stunning “Ghost in the shell” and I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed by this earlier release. It’s an ambitious movie, that tries to renew the typical mecha-action story, and succeeds thanks to a multi-layered , complex plot that blends seamlessly science-fiction and detective story, very realistic in its premises (the mechas are very much everyday tools) but also with many interesting twists (the investigation scenes in the slums of Tokyo have an intriguingly surreal quality to them) True, it’s not a relentless, action-packed movie, but I think that the battle scenes (the one in the streets of Tokyo is splendid!)have a stronger impact on the viewer when they make sense in the context of a story, and this is the case. The final climax, maybe, is not as powerful as I expected, but that’s a minor flaw, because the rest is so good. Also , this is a movie, not a tv-series, so it has the kind of top-notch quality usually reserved to theatrical releases: superior character design, wonderfully “fluid” animation, and incredibly detailed machines, mechas, landscapes etc. The sequel is supposed to be even better, and I’ll get it for sure. Strongly recommended.

I love MY GIRL. It’s about an 11-year-old tomboy named Vada, who is growing up in the 70s. She never met her mother because her mother died when she was born. Vada lives with her widowed father who owns a funeral parlor and the funeral parlor happens to be Vada’s home, as well. Vada is obsessed with death because she sees dead people coming into her home every day. Her best friend is a boy named Tommy J. (Macaulay Culkin) who is allergic to just about anything you can think of. Vada is also in love with her school teacher. When Vada’s father hires a cosmatologist to put makeup on the dead people (and ends up falling in love with her), Vada soon starts to learn the true meaning of life. This flick also stars Dan Aykroyd as Vada’s father, Jamie Lee Curtis as Shelly, the woman Vada’s father falls in love with, and newcomer Anna Chlumsky as Vada. This is a great coming-of-age story that is very moving and at the same time, enjoyable and entertaining. With an all-star cast and serpurb acting, MY GIRL is a great movie to watch anytime! I also recommend the sequel, MY GIRL 2, which is just as good. If not, better!

I remember when “My Girl” came out in cinemas. I was in third grade, I was at a new school, and it was the start of a new term. First thing we had to do is get into partners and tell the other person what you’d done over the holidays. I still hadn’t made any proper friends yet, so no one really wanted to be my partner. I told the teacher, and he told off the class for not being very friendly. That was embarrassing, but it got me a partner. And what had I done over the holidays? I’d gone and seen “My Girl”, so I talked about that…

Buy,Download, Or Stream My Girl! Click Here

The girl of the film’s title is an eleven year old named Vada (Anna Chlumsky), and she’s a little strange. Still, that’s understandable given the company she’s grown up with. Her all too busy father (Dan Aykroyd) runs a funeral parlour in their home, her mother is dead, her grandmother is senile, her best friend Thomas J. (Macaulay Culkin) is allergic to everything, and the other girls in town tease her about her friendship with him. Is it any wonder that Vada is confused about death and love? It is the summer of 1972, a summer where Vada will learn a little, grow up a little, laugh a little, cry a little, sing a little. It’ll be a summer she never forgets.

This film looks a little older than the early 1990s, and I think that’s a little bit deliberate. Might of been a filter, might have been the type of film they used, I don’t know. Everything looks a little dusty and old, like a faded photograph at times. It really works well against the scenery, particularly the lake and the trees, rather idyllic. The cast plays nicely against the backdrop, particularly the young actors Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky. It’s a shame Anna hasn’t been in anything lately. I wonder what she’s doing these days? It’s always nice to see a bit of Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis too. The characters they all play are intriguing, especially the way they react to what happens in the story.

Buy,Download, Or Stream My Girl! Click Here

It’s a sad film at times. There’s one scene at the funeral parlour where the pastor is quoting a verse from the Bible, the part where Jesus says “let the children come to me”, and Vada, really upset runs up to the front. It was heartbreaking and symbolic. I cried just recently watching that bit.

When I was a kid, seeing the film for the first time back in third grade, I didn’t think Vada’s life in a funeral parlour was that strange. Looking back on it, I can see I was a bit like her back then. I was a bit confused about death for a few reasons as well. I’d say it’s a good film about coming to terms with death, actually.

Definitely worth a look. Good cast, good story, good scenery. Great film.

Based on the best selling novel by Alistair (Where Eagles Dare) MacLean, Mallory has been working on occupied Crete for two years and as an expert mountaineer is the perfect choice to ferry the team to the only part of Navarone not monitored by the Germans - a 400-foot cliff.

Joining Peck is David Niven as explosives expert John Anthony Miller and Anthony Quinn as a Greek resistance fighter.

MacLean is known for being able to weave together a great story and this movie is consistently entertaining. In fact the film was already afforded a respectable special release on DVD in 2000. Columbia though have outdone themselves with this 2-disc set by adding a second audio commentary and four new documentaries.

The original release included a rather dry, faltering, but informative commentary by director J. Lee Thompson, a smattering of archival featurettes of varying quality and an anecdotal documentary on the making of the picture featuring on-camera interviews with Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, James Darren and J. Lee Thompson named “Memories of Navarone” and running at 29:34. It’s a nice, breezy documentary and entertaining - detailing some of the experiences the cast had working on the picture.

However this new release includes a lively commentary with historian Stephen J. Rubin who mentions that this film started the trend of Hollywood going outdoors. Up until this time most movies were filmed on the studios backlot, whereas this movie was filmed on the island of Rhodes. He also discusses the cast (including a very young Richard Harris). Rubin also discusses some of the differences between the MacLean novel and the movie - which appear to be a number of changes to characterization and details some of the criticisms of the movie when it was released - including the fact that the actors were too old to play commando’s, many being as they were in their 40s and 50s. Though Rubin quickly adds that he feels it was cast perfectly.

Also included are two new documentaries, the first of these “Forging the Guns of Navarone” runs at 13:58 and includes on camera interviews with Eve Williams-Jones (the former wife of producer Carl Foreman) and Assistant Director Peter Yates (who himself went on to become a very successful director in his own right). Apparently Thompson was not the original director for the project and Yates credits Thompson for his ability to jump straight into a film that had already shot much of its second unit work as well as his ability to manage so many big name actors. Yates also reveals that despite their on-screen animosity towards each other, both Niven and Peck got along well together determined to have as much fun as possible on the picture. Yates also recounts how the crew would refer to it as “The biggest B-feature ever made.”

The second new documentary “The Ironic Epic of Heroism” runs longer at 23:38 and is essentially an on-camera analysis of the movie by noted Film Historian Sir Christopher Frayling (who was mistakenly credited with providing an audio commentary in the press release for this DVD release). Frayling is quite engaging as he recounts such facts as Foreman’s initial reluctance to handle the project. Foreman once said that he was incapable of making a movie that did not make statements and he initially saw the MacLean book as a simple action adventure. It was not until he re-read the novel that he realized it could serve to make statements about the futility of war and the ability of war to bring out the best in people.

Frayling also reflects on the fact that the movie was the first global production caper-style World War II movie to be played as an action adventure in a style he describes as “incredibly innovative.”

Also included on this new release is the restored intermission with score that was seen in some European cities (it is listed as an extra since it is not part of the official cut of the movie) and featurettes on the Dimitri Tiomkin score which details the subtle differences throughout the movie and a fascinating look at the UCLA restoration.

The restoration featurette details the tortured path towards restoring a film that was in such terrible shape that they needed several sources of original negative, both from Columbia and a private collector. In an example of the work the UCLA team had to do, the print they were provided by Columbia had the plane crash at the beginning of the movie happen in broad daylight. This apparently is how most people have seen the scene in recent years. That was until one of the eagle-eyed team at UCLA noticed that one of the trucks had it’s headlights on and wondered why. Sure enough they were able to track down a copy of the print from a private collector that showed that the crash happened at night with the screen various shades of blue - and that is how it was restored.

In another instance the print UCLA had also had the infamous dubbing of Richard Harris where the censor had the word “bloody” replaced with “ruddy” for some of the screenings in the UK (the word “bloody” is considered a swear word in the UK). The UCLA team prevailed again and were able to locate a copy of the correct audio still intact).

On a sidenote the DVD also affords fans of Tiomkin the opportinity to hear the opening sequence sans the narrative as a special feature on the second disc. This apparently is a special feature that had been requested for years.

The Guns of Navarone is a wonderful film that touches upon the issue of how difficult it can be to make moral choices during the course of a war. The screenplay is fascinating in the sense that every major character in the film has their own notions of just how far they should go in applying the necessary force “to get the job done” in a war.

The movie is about six saboteurs who must destroy two gigantic guns, which present a danger to the Allied Navy. At the very beginning of the movie, viewers immediately have their first taste of a moral dilemma when Commodore Jensen, the organizer of the mission, has to decide between sending six qualified men to an almost disastrous and suicidal mission or simply scrapping the mission and leaving 2,000 trapped British soldiers to a certain doom. Commodore Jensen sees the choice as a foregone conclusion and thus resorts to lying to the leaders of the mission in order to boost their confidence. Jensen however does feel the pains of leadership as he tells a fellow officer “I’m just a man who has to send men off to die”.

The six saboteurs each have their unique specialties and views of morality. The first saboteur is Captain Mallory, the best mountain climber in the world and a competent linguist. Captain Mallory is a soldier who now has a utilitarian view of the world and no longer sees the world as black or white. The second saboteur is Major Roy Franklin who is known for his luck and determination. Roy is as focused to the mission as Mallory, only he does not appear to be so in the eyes of his friend Corporal Miller, the third saboteur. Corporal Miller is the self-righteous chemical explosives expert whose philanthropic perception of the world directs his loyalty only to his friends and himself. The fourth is Private Brown “the Butcher of Barcelona” whose specialties are working with engines and using a knife. Although Brown is a seasoned veteran with many kills under his belt, he has become wary of the war. The fifth saboteur is Colonel Stavros. Stavros, like Mallory and Franklin, focuses to the task at hand, but is also ever thoughtful of his personal vendettas. Finally, the last saboteur is Private Pappadimos, whom Jensen describes as a “born killer”.

The moral views of the six saboteurs will clash with each other several times during the movie as they debate about how to conduct a war and deal with human life. The moral perceptions even prove to be the undoing of some of the men. The beauty of the movie is that ultimately the ongoing theme of morality further extends to the two women who later join the mission. Even the Germans are not exempt from this theme as the “normal” German soldier’s character contrasts itself sharply from that of the inhumane SS officer.

It is not surprisingly to find that many world leaders enjoy watching The Guns of Navarone, since here is a film that touches upon an issue that is constantly ever-present in their minds. The burden of choosing the fates of others is after all, a burden that is felt by both the commander and the individual soldier alike.

The superbit version of The Guns of Navarone is an improvement over the first regular DVD release. The noticeable improvement is found mainly in the sound. A particular standout scene in terms of sound is where Stavros uses his sniper rifle to give cover against the advancing German Army. The superbit picture quality while an improvement over the regular DVD release, is not as noticeably good as the superbit sound quality.

Just as David Attenborough sparked for many an interest in wildlife and natural history, Jacques Cousteau’s many televised voyages inspired in others a love for the sea and for exploration in general. Cousteau is famed together with Emile Gagnan as the co-inventor of the aqualung (SCUBA). His four-decade long series of voyages encompassed the globe and brought to homebound audiences the wonders and joys of the undersea world. The story begins way back in 1950 when he converted a WW2 minesweeper into what became the most famous research vessel of our time, the Calypso. Calypso not only sailed all the world’s oceans but made its way right into the heart of America, sailing up the St. Lawrence Seaway and exploring the Great Lakes in the early 1980s, traversing the Mississippi/Missouri river system in 1986 and embarked on one of the great pioneering surveys of the Amazon in the 1982-83 season. Calypso’s long journey finally ended on the other side of the world when it sank off the island of Singapore in 1996. In its day, it was so famous that Country singer John Denver wrote a song in tribute to it. In 1997, barely a year after the sinking of Calypso, Cousteau himself died.

Cousteau received numerous awards throughout his lifetime, including the Croix de Guerre during WW2. He was also made Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) for his work in the French Resistance. He was eventually elevated to the level of Commander of the Legion of Honour for his later services to science. He was one of the few foreigners inducted into America’s National Academy of Science. In 1985, he was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. And in 1989 he was finally inducted into the prestigious Académie Française, France’s highest recognition for lifetime contribution to the nation.

Cousteau’s filmed voyages were originally meant for cinematic release and both “The Silent World” (1956) and “World Without Sun” (1964) won Academy Awards for Best Documentary Feature. The Silent World also won the prestigious Palm d’Or at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. It was only later that Cousteau took to shooting for television. He made over 120 films in all. Warner has chosen one of his later TV series, “Cousteau’s Odyssey” consisting of 12 episodes filmed between 1977 and 1981 for this initial release. This is where it belongs in the chronological list of Cousteau’s TV series:

1966-68 The World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau

1968-76 The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau

1977-77 Oasis in Space

1977-81 Cousteau’s Odyssey Series

1982-84 Cousteau’s Amazon Series

1985-91 Cousteau’s Rediscovery of the World I

1992-94 Cousteau’s Rediscovery of the World II

Cousteau’s Odyssey was made for PBS and focuses on conservation and environmental destruction, unlike his more famous earlier series which focused mainly on the flora and fauna of the deep.

Warner’s Cousteau’s Odyssey comprise all 12 episodes filmed between 1977 and 1981. They are presented in broadcast order not in the order of filming.

1. The Nile, Parts 1 & 2 (On the communties and countries bordering the Nile)

2. Calypso’s Search for Atlantis, Parts 1 & 2 (On whether the ancient Minoan civilisation on Crete could be the model for Atlantis)

3. Time Bomb at 50 Fathoms (On the attempt to salvage drums of toxic material from a sunken ship)

4. Mediterranean: Cradle Or Coffin? (On the slow dying of the Mediterranean Sea)

5. Calypso’s Search for the Britannic (On the search for the sistership of the Titanic, sunk during WW1)

6. Diving for Roman Plunder (On the search for an ancient Roman ship carrying Greek Treasure)

7. Blind Prophets of Easter Island (Trying to uncover the mysteries of Easter Island)

8. Clipperton: The Island Time Forgot (Retracing the history of people shipwrecked on a lonely pacific island)

9. Lost Relics of the Sea (Searching for sunken ships in the Caribbean and Mediterranean)

10. The Warm Blooded Sea: Mammals of the Deep (The only episode dealing primarily with wildlife)

Spread over a generous 6 discs, it amounts to 2 hour-long episodes per disc. Each disc comes in it’s own standard Amray keepcase with everything packed into a single cardboard box. All the episodes are transferred in their original TV aspect of 1.33:1 fullscreen, not widescreen as stated by Amazon. Sound is a basic 2.0 mono.

Unfortunately, Warner has done very little if any restoration on the films. The prints are serviceable. Colors are strong and well saturated. Black levels are strong and deep giving a richness to the image. However, the films are splattered with dirt specks, streaks and film nicks. There is heavy grain throughout. Some footage look decidedly worse off than others. For a videophile the picture quality would be unacceptable. For someone more interested in the documentary, it’s passable. It’s a shame that documentaries, no matter how good, are not given the same meticulous treatment as Hollywood movies or even sitcoms. Still I’m happy to finally get a chance to see Cousteau and crew on DVD and to relive the voyages once again.

OH MY GOD! WHAT IS GOING ON? Who in Hell do these studios think they are, playing these games with the DVD releases of classic television? I swear it’s time for a government investigation of a conspiracy to defraud the American consumer. What they’re doing is selling us the same product multiple times, under the guise of giving us improved versions each time, when all along they have the resources to do it right the first time. It’s not a new story. First they sold us LPs, then 8-tracks, then cassettes, then CDs, then digitally remastered CDs, then CDs with bonus tracks & expanded liner notes, then enhanced CDs with video playable on computers, and so on. And yes, we get what we deserve when we go to them, rushing up eager to get pushed around, as Rod Serling said, but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Okay. Specifics: Get your VHS and the new DVD of “Calypso’s Search For Atlantis” ready to compare. Roughly half an hour into part 1, there’s a sequence wherein the crew is shown readying their new breathing apparatus. In the original broadcast (the VHS version), the men are shown sampling the air before lowering the device. One calls it “mountain air”, another judges it “antique”. It’s a great moment, humorous and memorable. Now watch the DVD. THE SCENE ISN’T THERE. IT WAS CUT OUT. IT APPEARED IN THE VHS VERSION, FOR GOD’S SAKE, BUT WAS EDITIED FROM THIS DVD RELEASE! Check the running time of the VHS version: 58 minutes. Now look at the running time on the DVD edit: 51 MINUTES!!!!! It’s the same story on the rest of the DVDs, the episodes having been cut in some cases down to a mere 48 minutes!! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY? The answer, in all likelihood, is that Warner Bros, those geniuses who cropped the top & bottom of the full screen Kung Fu in order to create some half-baked letterbox format of a tightly composed visual masterwork created for full screens, are planning to re-release the Cousteau Odyssey series in a remastered, complete & uncut form in order to bleed even more money from You & Me. As Col. Kurtz. said, “I hate them, I do hate them, those nabobs”. They are guilty of Grotesque Stupidity and Heinous Evil. I condemn them. It’s boycott time, WB.

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we still do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond excited. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, put it on and were almost given instant headaches from the old school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to see it, it just was nowhere near 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was just us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that bad and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.

Needless to say the very next day I went back to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the purchase, 5 stars for that version.) It was very sad that it did not work out because such an amazing holiday movie with such great animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it just is not worth the headache and strain.

I went to see this movie tonight with a mentally handicapped friend - “Michael” — (from a L’Arche home here in Winnipeg, Canada). We were the first persons in the theatre for the very first evening showing in this city - and we were the last to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - enchanted by the movie’s subtleties and happily exhausted by its roller-coaster rides.

Time and again, Michael (who is sensitive, compassionate and with a good sense of humor) turned to me in the darkness, smiling in appreciation at the exact same moments I turned to see his reactions. Each time this happened, it was at a moment in the film when some little detail, perfectly captured through superb ‘cinematography,’ brought moisture to my normally cynical eye, and a warm smile to Michael’s innocent face.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Polar Express! Click Here

Some examples: There is a lone, black child on this apparent ‘dream train’ to the North Pole - a girl of about ten or eleven years, and like a painting come to life, the miraculous technology at work in this film captures the particular sensibilities of this compassionate, black youngster — We see small mannerisms of someone comfortable with herself in a way the other (ten or so) white kids on the train are not. And the effect is profound — the movie audience, including some children of that same age group, went silent at such moments in the film.

My friend Michael - who has a ’savant’ genius for perceiving my emotions, and expressing them for me out loud in public — Michael turned to me with a delighted smile when the girl on the train reaches out to hold the hands of the poorest boy, sitting alone in the rear compartment; and later, she hugs two other boys, (one of them the central character) — at their final parting. At that moment I held up a finger to my lips to try to hush Michael, but couldn’t prevent him from saying aloud: “She’s such a sweetheart.” There were murmurs of appreciation in the darkness around us, responding to this innocent sentiment.

There is a sublime moment, on the back platform of the moving train — the Northern Lights glimmering in the distance — when the young girl joins in song with the poorest kid on the train (a younger boy from a dilapidated home on the “far side of the tracks”). I admit to being overcome with emotion during this duet (a lovely, strong melody with poignant lyrics) - and I blurted out loud to Michael, after the first chorus: “What a wonderful song!” The refrain includes the words “When Christmas comes to town.” [It's a song so good that, with some future 'cover versions' by serious musicians who could do it justice --- this "Christmas Comes to Town" song could, I believe, deservedly join the small list of true, Christmas 'classics.']

I’d have to agree with anyone who thinks this movie is a little short on plot. And yet . . . once you’ve suspended disbelief — beginning with an earth-shattering, Christmas-eve arrival of a steam-puffing, passenger train on a small-town Michigan street, directly outside the home of the movie’s central character — once we’ve swallowed that premise, the movie disarmingly embraces the child in us, (including our fears) and our reservations vanish without our noticing.

Just as great `realistic’ painters, (think Rembrandt or Vermeer) worked wonders of light & shadow that no mere photograph could ever capture, so too this computer-animated marvel takes your breath away through an accumulation of tiny but acute observations that could never be captured by conventional cinematography. Prime examples from the opening scenes:

A shaft of light illuminates the boy’s bedroom, and he is reflected in a chrome, automobile hubcap leaning against a wall; at once we share his view — through the keyhole of his bedroom door - we can see only the backs and the dressing gowns of mother and father, as they say goodnight to the boy’s young sister, after determining the state of her belief in Santa’s existence - a belief no longer shared by the older brother, whose eye is at the keyhole.

Later, on the train, there’s an exquisite close up of the boy’s face, a slight blemish above the pores on his upper right cheek; the `camera’ pans in rotation, capturing perfectly, the texture of the boy’s hair, and that of the young black girl sitting beside him — subtleties of such perfection one wonders if the unique, artistic accomplishment of “Polar Express” could ever be surpassed.

The film’s last scene, consists entirely of a close-up view of a small, silver bell (of the type associated with sleigh rides) with its attached ‘ribbon’ of red leather. The little bell helps make the final point about `Belief’ — in things unseen, (or forgotten, and thus inaccessible to some adults). So simple, so powerful, so enlightening an image. My friend Michael turned to me at that moment, with a radiant smile. And we just shook our heads in awe.

—-

Yes, this movie must have SOME shortcomings - one or two moments that don’t quite work as intended by the creators. But right now, in the afterglow, I can’t recall what they were. The film was just too satisfying an experience!

I’m a 57-year-old grandfather who happens to believe that “The Polar Express” is the first, true Christmas classic in almost 60 years. Not since the original Kris Kringle “Miracle” movie of 1947, has any film (to my jaded eye) so transcended our secular, commercial views of the Holiday Season, with such uplifting and fresh reminders of the timeless and true spirit of Christmas.
