German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind’s symbolist novella “Mini-Haha: The Corporal Education of Young Girls” (1888) is the basis for this film, directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic. It takes place in a girls’ school for affluent students, who arrive in a coffin, one by one, and who are not allowed to leave. (Anyone who tries to leave has to stay there forever, and become one of the old women who are servants to the current girls.) Marion Cotillard plays one of the two teachers, Eva, a ballet teacher; she is often moved to tears. The other teacher is a science teacher, who has a limp. The girls are always dressed in white. Is this beginning to sound like a dream sequence to you? The girls wear colored ribbons to denote their seniority; some of the older girls are eventually taken by train to a city, presumably (but never guess outcome in a dream) to attend another school. The film is admirably discussed on the DVD in two interviews with the director, who declines to “explain” what is happening here. Suffice it to say that this film does not respect chronology or explanation. Like other of Wedekind’s works, it exists, and was created, to be absorbed rather than “understood,” much as looking at a great painting is assisted by the viewer’s openhearted acceptance of the effort. Not for everyone, but an interesting look at Cotillard’s choices in her early career — how the girls’ freedom is always tinged with the oppressiveness of their days. Cotillard has a great line: “Obedience is the only path to happiness.” Perhaps Wedekind was remarking on the way children were raised in his day. Perhaps the director is remembering her days growing up in an oppressive country in the l960s. It’s all up to the viewer.

Like the very best gothic fairy tales, the film submerges us in an innovative, surreal aesthetic that evokes coming of age. The startling imagery (watery expanses alternately placid and violent, blood-bright ribbons and whitest uniforms) and cryptic but highly suggestive narrative hover between beauty and menace, embroidering a delicate, deadly spiderweb ambience. The shimmering magic and terrors of childhood and pubescence, which coil just beneath consciousness, are given phantasmatic form in sequences that suggest the permeability of boundaries we’d prefer to think staunch. Safety and danger, innocence and perversion, bodily resilience and fragility, nature’s loveliness and destructiveness all bleed into each other. Is the girls’ school a nurturing haven or site of sinister machinations? Will the “outside” proffer the escape into liberty or unnameable new horrors? How can we understand “birth” and “death”, is the coffin from which new arrivals spring also a sort of womb, are new life stages necessarily also a deathly adieu to what came before, a rite initiated in blood? For what are the best girls “chosen,” and is that good or bad? The unforgettable sequence in which the preteen butterflies are ushered through an enormous grandfather clock to dance for an audience that we gradually discern comprises older male figures is appalling in the most subtle of ways, staging the dangers and vulnerable joys that beat, intertwined, at the heart of female pubescence. Reverberations of Angela Carter, Brothers Quay, Peter Weir, Brothers Grimm, Lewis Carroll, yes, but there’s an idiosyncratic, chilling yet oddly uplifting magic all its own here.

What everybody should know about 2010: It is not 2001! Sounds stupid, but it explains about everything. 2010 is the continuation of the storyline of 2001, but it tells the story in a completely different way.

2001 was slow and silent. It was filled with emotions and impressions. 2010 offers the same but combines it with a far more interesting plot. On one hand it tells the story nine years after the Discovery Incident, as a team of russian and american scientists try to find answers and on the other hand it explains the fate of Bowman and HAL 9000 … and ultimately of mankind.

The movie never gets boring and keeps you guessing until the end. The actors are marvelous. The hangar scene between Floyd (Roy Scheider) and Bowman (Keir Dullea) alone is better than any other scene in 2001. The russian/american conflict may be a bit out of date (! ), but it never spoils the movies true message.

2010 is not better than 2001. It is different. It is the answer to a question and the beginning of a new one. You have to watch this film. And i also recommend the other two (book) sequels from Arthur C. Clarke (2061 and 3001).

Once again, the stupid people responsible for doing transfers do an inferior transfer. Instead of using the standard DVD resolution of 720×480, they chose instead to use something more like 640×427. Honestly, I don’t understand why they decide to do it this way, there should be plenty of room on the DVD, since they put the pan and scan version on the other side of the disc. I’ve run into a few DVDs like this and it pissed me off every time.

There’s a light, good-hearted nature to “No Reservations” that’s quite pleasing, if a little predictable. This is just as much a story of life as it is a story of romance, and we all know the formulas such films follow: a person’s world is rearranged when someone new enters his or her life, and the laughter, tears, and conflict will be plentiful. I expected nothing less from “No Reservations,” which is probably why I was able to enjoy it. This is a charming, funny, touching film that casts away any qualms about being formulaic, which is a good thing for anyone in need of romantic escapism. I don’t dare question how realistic the events of the film are; this is not a film that bothers with realism, but rather with the idealism that life is supposed to work in a specific way. At times, it’s a welcome diversion.

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Reservations! Click Here

The plot concerns Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones), the executive chef of an upscale New York restaurant. We immediately get the sense that hers is a very organized, controlled world; while not explicitly critical or demeaning, she is fiercely protective of what she’s worked so hard for, namely her position at the restaurant. Here’s a person that’s strong on the outside but deeply insecure on the inside, exemplified by her inability to receive criticism (never complain about the food she prepares; you’ll definitely regret it). For these reasons, she’s ordered into therapy. She pretty much dominates her own sessions with incessant discussions on food preparation–appetizing, yes, but not exactly enlightening. Her therapist (Bob Balaban) is initially unable to ask any questions or give any advice. Clearly, she’s afraid to let anyone examine her personal life.

Her world is turned upside down when her sister dies in a car accident, leaving behind a daughter, Zoe (Abigail Breslin). Because there’s no father in the picture, Kate is now faced with the responsibility of caring for her. But will she know what to do? A child has never been a part of her life; being a chef is the only life she’s ever known. She knows virtually nothing about Zoe, not even her favorite color. Furthermore, Zoe has lost her mother, meaning she’ll need the extra emotional support Kate may not be able to give. It will be an adjustment, and a tough one at that; not only is Zoe unwilling to eat, she’s also unwilling to let Kate get close.

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Reservations! Click Here

In this regard, she takes right after her aunt, whose defensiveness runs on high after a new chef is hired. Nick (Aaron Eckhart) is a man with a bright, free-spirited approach to cooking: he listens to opera; he actively engages the other chefs; he’s charming and witty. Kate finds him threatening, and initially treats him as such by being cold, critical, and distant. But when she decides to bring Zoe to work with her one night, she notices how well Zoe and Nick get along. He even gets her to eat. Thus begins a strained friendship that the audience knows will progress into something more. Of course, that’s exactly what the audience hopes will happen. Quite simply, Nick is fun to be around and Kate is not; their coming together allows her to lighten up and let someone in emotionally.

As the film progresses, the relationship between Kate, Zoe, and Nick develops, not necessarily as it would for a family, but rather as it would for a group of friends. I never once thought that Zoe would ever see Nick and Kate as parental figures, which is just as mature on Zoe’s part as it is sad. Likewise, I never once thought that Kate saw herself as a mother, despite her growing love for Zoe. The dynamic between these three characters is complex, especially when a number of other conflicts are introduced. For one thing, Zoe fragile state causes problems at school. It also threatens to ruin everything Kate has tried to accomplish. Both are trying, but it’s clear that a lot of emotional baggage remains.

Herein lies the film’s major weakness: most of Kate’s emotional baggage is undefined. We do get a couple of brief mentions, such as her mother’s passion for cooking and her father’s absence from her life. But none of this is properly developed, and that made her controlling behavior seem less understandable and more uncalled for. Still, I was taken by the dramatic tension between her and Nick; watching an uptight person letting their guard down is both entertaining and uplifting. And I was definitely moved by her attempts with Zoe, who’s just begging to be hugged and soothed and reassured that everything would be all right. There’s a moment when she watches home video of her mother; Kate sneaks in, sits down, and holds Zoe tightly. You can practically see the emotion dripping off the screen, which is probably why it’s effective.

Equally as effective is the growing love between Kate and Nick–a love that can go in any direction but ultimately treads the expected path. I’ve seen enough cinematic romances to understand that this is appropriate, maybe even necessary. “No Reservations” is the kind of film we occasionally want to see, if not for plausibility, then for the satisfaction of temporarily disappearing into a fantasy. It plays on our personal desires, namely those of happiness and well being in the midst of a crazy world. At one point, Kate says, “I wish there was a cookbook for life”; I found this clever, despite the overuse of the basic message. If it’s possible for me to appreciate this kind of dialogue–or even a film with this kind of dialogue–then I think it’s safe to assume that it’s possible for you, too.

This romantic comedy is likable but extremely predictable. Catherine Zeta Jones plays a chef at an upscale NYC restaurant who has devoted her life to being a great chef. So much so that she doesn’t have time for anything else. Her sister is killed in a car wreck on the way to visit leaving her with her daughter to raise as her own. Meanwhile the new assistant chef is a carefree guy who brings big changes with him. Can you see it coming? Catherine doesn’t like him at first, but then….Yes you guessed it. The story is okay and the acting is good enough, but there is nothing new here. This is a good rental to watch with the girlfriend or wife.

Cidade dos Homens is one of those shows that breaks your heart and at the same makes you feel like there’s hope for some of the world’s poorest people, os favelados in Brasil.

Buy,Download, Or Stream City of Men! Click Here

Cidade dos Homens (City Of Men) follows the two young men, Acerola and Laranjinha, as they live, survive and hustle in the favela. It’s obvious that the boys are mischievous, and they get into many a scrape, but it’s also clear that the boys have good hearts.

The cast of characters and life lessons taught and shown in the series bring a face to the suffering of the people in the favelas. When Espeto’s girlfriend waits in line all night just to get her boyfriend a job sweeping streets, only to have him be turned down because he cannot read and write (as Espeto astutely points out: Why do I need to know how to read and write to sweep the streets?), we can see the chokehold bureaucracy and incompetence have on Brazilians.

Buy,Download, Or Stream City of Men! Click Here

Despite all these obstacles and roadblocks, Cidade dos Homens(City of Men) is full of smiles, joyful moments and lots of great music. It’s a coming of age story, albeit one with a slightly different perspective.

The acting is engaging, the episodes are well-written and beautifully filmed and the character development is second to no other television show or film I’ve ever seen. Throughout the series there is an unprecedented blend of drama and humor that is sublimely touching.

After a few episodes you will find yourself thinking about the characters as if you know them personally, especially the incredibly multi-faceted main characters Acerola and Laranjinha. You will find yourself feeling a complete spectrum of emotion as you follow the two boys through agonizing challenges and life lessons that are often used as a vehicle of social commentary about Brazilian political and social structures. This commentary is delivered in a variety of original ways including interviews with real people cut right into the middle of story-lines and unscripted interactions between the show’s actors filmed in a documentary style.

In addition to the fantastic character development there is equally impressive development of setting. There were times I felt I was running right along with the characters through the rough, disorienting, labyrinth of a neighborhood they live in. The distance between you on your couch and the environment on your television screen will never feel smaller than it does while watching City of Men.

All of that said, there are times where the seemingly insurmountable challenges Acerola and Laranjinha face feel formulaic and there are a couple episodes that are noticeably less enjoyable than the others because of inexplicable plot developments and inconsistencies, to the point where at times I was wondering if I had missed episodes. (One episode ends with one of the boys stating, “We never saw him again…”, about a character who appears in the very next episode.) Also, if you find yourself as immersed in Acerola and Laranjinha’s lives as I did, the last episode will feel like a bit of a slap in the face.

All in all this series is well worth the 13 odd hours you will spend watching. At it’s worst it is wildly entertaining and evocative and at it’s best it transcends it’s medium to directly enhance your core understanding of society, privilege, oppression (mainly of poor people by government establishments), and the fundamental experiences, (love, friendship, work, pride, hardship, fear, the search for identity and meaning) that we all share.

The movie synopsis:

In the 1974 film PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, William Finley stars as Winslow Leach, a very talented composer who is working on a rock opera based on FAUST. Pop composer Paul Williams plays Swan, an aloof and mysterious record producer who has made the careers of many popular rock musicians. [For the youngsters reading this, a record is, like, an antique version of a music CD.] Swan has built the Paradise, a massive enclosed amphitheater that will be used to showcase the many bands and musicians under his auspices, but he wants to find new material and new talent for the extravagant gala he is planning for opening night. Enter Winslow–who wants Swan to consider his FAUST material for the Paradise grand-opening–and an attractive and talented young female singer named Phoenix (played by the cute Jessica Harper, here in her film debut). While waiting to audition for Swan, Winslow and Phoenix meet and…well, it’s love at first sight. Unbeknownst to the two lovebirds, though, is their imminent appointment with destiny–and with the evil Swan. Swan indeed wants Winslow’s music for the theater debut, but he wants to present it as his own work, and with knowledge of the feelings that the composer and singer have for each other, he uses Phoenix as leverage to manipulate Winslow like marionette.

So Swan steals Winslow’s work, then arranges for Winslow to get arrested on a bogus drug-possession charge. In prison, Winslow learns of Swan’s manipulation, which spurs him to escape and, soon after, to break into Swan’s record factory and destroy the machines cranking out recordings of his stolen music. However, in a freak accident, Winslow’s head gets caught in a hot record press and his face is thereby mutilated. He flees from the scene and finds his way to the Paradise, where he swipes a really cool costume, sets up house, and then starts lurking around incognito. When he begins causing mayhem and thwarting the efforts of Swan and his theater staff, Winslow is dubbed The Phantom of the Paradise. And now the real fun begins….

He’s been beaten, mutilated, maimed, and framed, but he’s not gonna let Swan keep him from his music or from the woman he loves.

The review:

On the surface, Brian De Palma’s excellent PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE may seem like little more than a send-up of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, but it is much more complex than that. It is actually a very hip, very surreal satire of the depravity and decadence in the rock-and-roll music industry of the 1970s–specifically the two sub-genres known as Concept Rock and Glitter Rock–as well as a humorous yet affectionate homage to several classic horror stories and movies such as PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, PSYCHO, FRANKENSTEIN, FAUST, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and many others.

De Palma’s directing style for this film is sometimes very unique and inventive (of course, it doesn’t hurt that he is directing his own material). Especially nice is his effective use of the split-screen technique in a few key scenes, and the frenetic cuts and camera angles he uses for some scenes–especially the musical performances inside the Paradise–convey the genuine atmosphere of a 1970s-era rock concert.

The sets are outrageously exaggerated in layout and color, especially the set for the inside of the Paradise theater. In many ways, the overall look of the movie harkens back to the silent German Expressionist films, specifically METROPOLIS and THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. That isn’t to say that it looks too old-fashioned. Indeed, the bright sets, surreal costumes, and extravagant staging are all honest reflections of the performances and ostensibly flamboyant lifestyles of the 1970s rock artists like Glitter Rock’s Alice Cooper or David Bowie and the Concept-Rock band Jethro Tull. By the way, those aforementioned sets were designed and dressed by Sissy Spacek, who a few years later would start on the road to greater fame playing the title role in the horror film CARRIE (1976).

The acting in PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE is also outstanding. Paul Williams exudes a perfect air of smarminess as the evil music impresario, Swan. In real life, Williams has composed and produced many successful pop songs for groups like The Carpenters and Three Dog Night, and this inside knowledge of the music industry only adds to the realism of his performance. Incidentally, Williams also wrote or co-wrote the music and score for PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.

As Winslow Leach, William Finley creates a very convincing naive and nerdy musician (as well as a naive and nerdy Phantom!), and pretty Jessica Harper does a fine job in her debut role as an up-and-coming singer and dancer (the object of Winslow’s love). But it is the over-the-top performance of Gerrit Graham that really steals the show. Graham plays Beef, a Glitter-Rock singer whose stage persona is that of a big, tough-and-buff Frankenstein’s-monster type. Off stage, however, Beef is a stereotypical homosexual queen, and Graham really chews the scenery as he plays the character to great humorous effect. Don’t get the idea that Graham is merely poking fun at homosexuals, though; he is really satirizing the misconception, especially prevalent in the 1970s, that all Glitter-Rock artists are gay. (One of the best and funniest scenes in the film is a takeoff on the shower scene from PSYCHO, with Graham’s Beef replacing the Janet Leigh character and Finley’s Phantom filling in for Norman Bates.)

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE is one of those nearly forgotten gems that is a must-see for horror fans and admirers of director De Palma.

The DVD from Twentieth Century Fox offers a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, but little by way of extras (in fact, the theatrical trailer only). However, it is very reasonably priced, so fans of horror & satire have no excuse for not adding this film to their collections.

Talk about a strange brew… a mixture of horror, comedy, rock music, unrequited love and fantasy. A songwriter’s music is stollen by a promoter (Paul Williams) who has the writer thown in jail, beaten and almost killed. The songwriter returns as the “phantom” and haunts the rock palace of the promoter.
It’s hard to recommend this movie to someone. If they like the music, they may hate the horror elements, or visa versa. But if you’re a child of the seventies, this will probably appeal to you.

First off: the music is excellent. It was written by Paul Williams, who also sings some of the songs. It was nominated for an Academy Award (it is also available on CD).
Next: If you like Brian Depalma, with his split screens, mood lighting and quick cuts, it’s all here.
Also: Jessica Harper, in her film debut as the love interest, is great, and she does her own singing. Gerrit Graham is absolutely hysterical as “Beef” the glam rock KISS wannabe.

A truely strange film that will appeal to the more adventurous, but if you like a happy ending, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Yes, I said trilogy. This set includes the Disney classic The Lion King and its two sequels,The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2. All three are great films, which is surprising, due to Disney’s history with doing sequels.

The Lion King is the classic story of a young lion club named Simba who is next in line to become king of the Pride Lands. As he gets older, his uncle Scar begins to despise him and Mufasa, Simba’s father and Scar’s older brother. Mufasa is king, which makes Scar furious, and he makes a plot to kill them both. The plot is proven to be a success. Mufasa is killed and Simba, believing it to be his fault, runs off. He leaves the Pridelands and meets Timon and Pumbaa, a meekat and warthog who eats bugs. Simba soon joins the two and adopts their “Hakuna Matata”(it means no worries)lifestyle. Soon, Simba grows up and one day comes across his old friend Nala, who tells him that Scar is destroying their home. Simba at first disagrees about doing something about it, but after meeting with a old friend of his father named Rafiki, a wise mystic baboon, Simba gets back on track and decides to challenge Scar and become……The Lion King.

This movie is truly one of the best animated movies ever made. With some amazing voice-overs(including James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Whoppi Goldberg, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and a engaging story, The Lion King is truly a classic to behold. Five Stars.

While probably the least interesting of the set, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride is still one amazing sequel. The story revolves around Simba’s and Nala’s daughter named Kiara. Kiara one days ventures into the territory of the lioness named Zira. Zira is the wife of Scar and she wants revenge on Simba. Zira has a young lion club named Kovu and while Kiara is in Zira’s territory, she and Kovu get to know each other. Soon, the two parents show up and Simba takes Kiara home. At her home, Zira comes with a plan: she will train Kovu to kill Simba by getting to Kiara. Years later, they are now grown up and while Kiara is on her first hunt, a fire, set off by Zira’s other children, is burning the pridelands. Kiara barely makes to high ground and Kovu arrives just in time to save her. Simba sees him and Kovu tells him to give him a chance, while truly trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Rafiki is trying to get Kiara and Kovu together, beliving it could stop the feud between the two families. It proves to be a success as Kiara and Kovu fall for each other. Soon Simba tries to get to know Kovu better and finds out the truth about Kovu plans for Simba, which Kovu now doesn’t want to go through with, due to his feelings for Kiara. Kovu gets banished and Kiara runs off to find him. Zira now decides to take on Simba’s pride by force and kill Simba by herself. Now, Kovu and Kiara must stop this before the worst happens.

Better than most sequels, Simba’s Pride brings back all the characters from the original and introduces fascinating new characters. The story, while less interesting than the first, still works for this film and the voice-overs are good as well.

Four Stars.

The newest addition to the series is The Lion King 1 1/2. This is the first film’s story, told from Timon’s and Pumbaa’s point of view. The story begins with Timon and his life before he took on his Hakuna Matata lifestyle. He makes tunnels for a living, but always screws them up. While Timon’s mom beleves he just hasn’t found his place yet in the clan, Timon, along with his Uncle Max and the other meekats, believe he is just a klutz and he isn’t gonna get better anytime soon. Timon decides it’s time to find the home of his dreams and sets off with his mother’s permission. While on his quest, he meets Pumbaa and the two form a “aquaintship”, which soon becomes a friendship. They soon find their dream home and everything seems perfect until one day they find Simba and decide to raise him until that fateday when Nala arrived. When they hear Simba has gone back to the Pridelands to become king, Timon and Pumbaa must now help Simba regain his right to become the rightful king of the Pridelands.

This one is incredibly funny and also, very clever. The idea of seeing the story from Timon and Pumbaa’s point of view is delightful and the laughs are plenty. Overall, a new addition to the series that is fresh and fun. I give the Lion King 1 1/2 five stars.

I hope this review was helpful. I hope you enjoy this set of movies as much as I did.

This three movie, six disc collection is definitely worth the price paid. This collection contains Disney’s The Lion King, Lion King 1 ½ and Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride. The Lion King is a much beloved Disney classic. And while the Lion King 1 ½ and 2 are not nearly as good as the original - they are funny and enjoyable in their own right.

The special features, frankly, are not that good. There’s some games on them and some short montages on the characters. But mostly, I just watched the movies.

Project Arms is the single best anime I’ve ever seen. First, let’s look at it from a die-hard anime fanatic(my perspective, mind you). The terrific blend of fierce action with personal terror makes me drool(stylish yet intelligent use of manga mixed with fast-paced anime contributes to the puddle I’ve built up. Here we see character drama in action. Hayato may seem like your cliche “Everyone I ever loved is dead because of(villain)” I thought this at first too. Then, something inside me said quite plainly “This is different.” Hayato isn’t another Link or something. Hayato has actually reacted to the incident of his ‘fathers’ death. Ryo, too, is not another Goku. He is just a kid who might have the most power of all the ARMS. Takeshi is not another… another… come to think of it, I can’t really compare Takeshi to anybody. Also, I hope the next DVD comes out soon. …

THE CARTER FAMILY: WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN is an interesting DVD documentary from PBS, but it really could have easily been made better. As it is, it is still the only documentary available on DVD, and it is quite interesting.

It fits well as a companion piece to the book WILL YOU MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE? by Mark Zwonitzer and Charles Hirshberg. Zwonitzer appears frequently throughout this DVD.

This DVD is about 50 minutes long, with about 19 minutes of bonus material. They use actors to recreate some scenes, but they should have marked these scenes as “recreations.” Too often they show old, generic footage, or recreations, without captioning it as stock footage or recreations. If you didn’t know better, you might think you were seeing the actual, original Carter Family in action, but you’re not.

There is NO actual moving pictures of the original Carter Family on the DVD, though Maybelle and Sara appear too briefly in b/w TV and moving film footage, presumably from the 1950’s (Maybelle on TV, playing some of “Wildwood Flower”) and in the 1960s, (Sara and Maybelle, elderly but still sounding great, standing around outside, playing “Sweet Fern” for the camera, appearing as the credits rollover the picture at the end of the DVD).

It is really frustrating that they did not include these two songs as DVD bonuses, in a COMPLETE song version! Especially since the rest of the DVD uses only still photos of the three original Carter Family members.

The DVD explains a lot about their lives before the music business, the formation of the group, and the business and cultural circumstances of their influential careers! I watched this DVD after finishing my reading of the book WILL YOU MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE? and I very much enjoyed what is on this DVD. I just wish they had shared more of the live action footage that they had access to!

There are many still photos shown of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle which I had not seen before. The best quality photos come from an aborted LIFE MAGAZINE photo shoot for a cover story, which potentially would have boosted their careers, but was ill-timed and got bumped when the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor, and so the Carter story got pulled out, and was unfortunately never ran later!

The DVD tells the story of the strained marriage of A.P. and Sara, with a little more weight than what we are perhaps used to in 2006. I grew up in a family shattered by divorce, and I take too much of that grief for granted, maybe most of the Western culture does, since it seems to have happened to nearly everybody’s family. Perhaps we really should recognize A.P. and Sara’s failed marriage as the family tragedy that it is, but it does sound strange to hear the divorce described as some huge tragedy unique to this very famous family. It is as if the music business chores destroyed their marriage, and A.P. could never had guessed the incredibly high price he would pay, with his broken marriage, to establish and maintain the Carter Family career.

Sara Carter comes off as one of the earliest “feminists” in the entertainment industry. They showcase a recreation of them recording “Single Girl, Married Girl,” their first big hit, which has lyrics that envy the “freedom” of a single woman who can go have fun, while lamenting the responsibilties of a married mother and wife who envies the single girl. I don’t applaud this sentiment, nor do I agree with it, but this is a fact that this was their first big hit, and an early feminist “anthem” of sorts, back in the late 1920’s.

The DVD later shows how Sara pitches her marriage to an angry and unresponsive A.P., to have an affair with her husband’s cousing, Coy Bayes, whom she would eventually marry, many lonely years later. A true family tragedy, yet all too common today. I wish it were a unique situation, but I grew up with that kind of situation in my parents marriage, too. It is heartbreaking.

The DVD extras last about 19 minutes and show people talking about Maybelle’s guitar and her guitar playing techniques. They also show The Carter Fold, which is a weekly musical showcase hosted by the daughter of A.P. which is still going on today! Check it out!

If you are a serious Carter Family fan, then you will be happy to see this documentary, but you will likely wonder why they did not max out the possibilities when they had some really rare, great footage that went so underused in the final cut.

Besides the biography book, WILL YOU MISS ME WHEN I’M GONE?, I can also highly recommend the CD collections from JSP Records, THE CARTER FAMILY 1927-1934, and THE CARTER FAMILY 1935-1941, which are the best and most comprehensive CD collections currently in print and available on amazon.com; VERY REASONABLY PRICED at about $25 per 5 CD set (which is about $5 per CD). Both sets feature 5 CDs that are completely loaded with just about every thing that the original Carter Family recorded in the studio during their 15 year career. These CDs sound pretty good (allowing for how PRIMITIVE these 80 year old original recordings are, from the dawn of the music industry as we know it), and they are the easiest way to get nearly all the Carter Family’s music quickly (and before these go out of print, too, so hurry up and get yours).

I actually give this 3.5 stars, but I am rounding up for effort.

This is a good companion video to the book Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone?, the definitive Carter Family biography. I can’t think of anything from the program that isn’t covered in the book. There is the added element of direct comments from various musicians and writers about the Carter Family, including Jeanette and Joe Carter, two of A.P. and Sara’s children. Mark Zwonitzer, co-author of the book, is also featured quite extensively in the program. With a running time of one hour, the program really only gives the Cliff Notes version of the Carter Family story.

As another reviewer pointed out, the focus is on A.P. and Sara’s relationship and less on Maybelle Carter’s contribution. I understand the feeling — Maybelle would merit a documentary all her own — but we wouldn’t have had the Carter Family were it not for A.P. and Sara. All stories have a beginning.

We are treated to a clip of Maybelle performing “Wildwood Flower” for a TV program sometime in the 50s. This is somewhat marred by the voiceovers the director chose to place during the scene. The clip is repeated with fewer distractions on one of the disc’s supplements, but it would have been nice to have it in its uninterrupted entirety. There is also some footage of Maybelle and Sara performing together in the 60s at the end of the program.

Extras include footage from the Country Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Maybelle’s guitar and a small bit about her playing technique (which is covered in the main program), a very brief history of the guitar in American music, and a short piece about the Carter Family Fold, the museum and performance space that continues to exist today.

All in all, it was an interesting program to watch, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it could have been more. Perhaps this will open the door for a more extensive documentary in the future. Also, with the success of Walk the Line, could a feature film of the Carter Family be close behind?

I’ve been waiting for this DVD to come into print for years, and now the wait is finally over. Thanks to Lionsgate for finally stepping up, straightening out the rights issues, and putting together a nice 2-Disc special edition of this classic 80s kids flick.

The Monster Squad, much like the Goonies and the Lost Boys, is a kid’s flick at heart, but it doesn’t come off as if it were written and directed down to children. The flick stars Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert (of Kids Incorporated fame), Brent Chalem, Michael Faustino and Robby Kiger as a group of kids that have a secret Monster club where they pontificate on all things monster related. Quick, two ways to kill a werewolf? Stumped? That’s right, everyone knows you need to shoot `em with a silver bullet. Anyway, the group runs into trouble when unbeknown to them the all too real rouges gallery of the classic Universal monster movies are converging on their town looking to destroy an amulet that can prevent them from taking over the world. Sean, the leader of the club, lucks into a copy of Van Helsing’s diary, which provides the instructions to a ritual that will banish the monsters into limbo. With the help of “Scary German Guy” (played by the always excellent Leonardo Cimino) a concentration camp survivor and resident German diary translator, the group bands together to save their families, their town, and quite possibly the entire world.

The film was directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black (of Lethal Weapon and Predator fame) with amazing special effects and make-up by the legendary Stan Winston. This DVD was made possible by the director, actors, and fans who banded together in the past year through letter writing campaigns and revival screenings which proves just how much of a cult classic this flick is. If you are a generation X’er who’s into action, horror or nostalgia the Monster Squad is sure to be a perfect addition to your DVD collection.

The 20th anniversary special edition set is reported to contain 2 audio commentary tracks, deleted scenes, an making of featurette, trailers, as well as a vintage interview with Tom Noonan (who played the Frankenstein’s monster.)

This is a great scary movie for kids and adults alike…
This little-known GEM of a film & one of my favorites with mostly a cast of unknowns. Stephen Macht (Graveyard Shift& many other stephen King films) & Jason Hervey (older brother, Wayne on Wonder Years) are familiar faces. A great kids frightfest that has the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Mummy, Wolfman, Frankenstein & a really hot & sexy Dracula with his female coven!

A passel of oddball kids fight the dark forces of evil in their small neighborhood with the help of Frankenstein & Scary German Guy (an old Germanic man that is a neighbor). Great plot, cool special effects, some excellent one liners & some wonderful child acting all make for a terrifc family frightfest! Check out the teacher in the beginning of the movie. The kids call her “Meow Mix” because her head is shaped like a cat’s head! Great oddball writing in this movie makes it scary & funny!

Wonderful story! I just can’t wait for this to come out on DVD!

There are over a hundred reviews for The Aristocats as of this date. They all refer to the previous edition (Disney Gold Classic Edition or whatever they called it years ago when it first came out on dvd).

So now we will have those reviews mixed up with new reviews for the Feb 5, 2008 version which offers more extras and a different aspect ratio. This may make things a bit confusing.

Moving on…

People compare this film to 101 Dalmations. This is Disney’s “cat” movie, they say. You can’t compare them; they’re too similiar somehow.

But they are both decent, cute family films.

Yes, Cruella is scary compared to the bumbling butler Edgar. There is a sense of jeopardy but Dalmations is much stronger in that sense.

Both films were made using the 1960’s Xerox method where the resulting animation is more sketchy looking and more close to the original animator’s drawings.

The Aristocats is more of a musical, definitely. A few forgettable songs, but also the charming and infectious tune “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat”. That is the tune I think of when I remember the adventures of Duchess and Thomas and the kittens. (101 Dalmations had the little “Cruella De VIl” song, but that’s it.)

Overall this is a fun vehicle but it is not a classic such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, or Lady and the Tramp. It has a nice, relaxing pace and is probably most appealing to youngsters. The voice talent, as ever with Disney cartoon features, is great. Eva Gabor’s Duchess is warm and maternal while Phil Harris as Thomas O’Malley is macho yet sweet (and sounds like a lifelong diehard smoker). He also lent his vocal prowess to The Jungle Book when he played Baloo the bear.

This special edition for 2008 has some cute extras. But unless you’re a total stickler for aspect ratios or you collect every version they release, the previous edition should suffice. It was fine, with a clear and bright picture/sound presentation.

I’m so glad that Disney made this film. I much prefer the more innocent Disney movies of the past. Movies like Lady and the Tramp and The Aristocats are truly fun, wholesome entertainment. Don’t get me started on the new Disney films which are way too interested in pushing hit pop songs and attracting adults with more action, violence, and suggestive dialogue. I know things can’t stay the same so I’m glad we have this film from a more innocent era. I particularly like the fact that the pacing is relaxed and the villain is not very scary. I’m always looking for what I call “calm” movies and videos for my 2 and a half year old. I don’t want him seeing frightening or fast-paced images. Lady and the Tramp and Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas are other great shows for young viewers. Unlike the sterile environment of the Teletubbies, these movies are full of wonderful images and interesting music. I find the backdrop drawings extremely interesting and stylized. I also like the setting of the film (France) as opposed to the mainly exotic locations lately of Disney films.
