Apples vs. oranges, Chevy vs. Ford, Yankees vs. Red Sox, vanilla vs. chocolate… all big debates to be definite, but they pale in comparison to the best debate of them all, Chinese Martial Arts vs. Japanese Martial Arts! This Lau Kar-Leung(who also appears as a drunken master!) film, that also goes by the far worse title, “Shaolin Challenges Ninja,” delivers this battle in astounding fashion with tons of style and charm to spare. The location has Gordon Liu in an arranged marriage to Japanese actress Yuko Mizuno and instantly their cultures and beliefs clash, most importantly when it comes to honest who has the best fighting techniques the world over. In typical Kar-Leung film fashion the movie has a light sportive tone, however; unlike some of his other attempts it’s never corny and contemptible and Gordon and Yuko in particular have fun with the situations while smooth keeping a serious tone about everything. The Japanese masters that are brought in to challenge Gordon are all big and bring personality and flavor with the tiny amount of veil time each is given (by exact Japanese actors) . When these duels occur we find everything you could ever hope for including Kung Fu vs. Karate, Long Sword vs. Kitana, Butterfly Knives vs. Sais, 3 Portion Staff vs. Nunchuku (in the closest we’ll ever score to seeing Liu buy on Bruce Lee… and this guy is an sure clone), and more! One knock I do have with the movie is that Chinese master Liu tends to pawn the Japanese masters in enchanting but fairly one-sided duels. Unexcited, this is a Chinese film (if it was Japanese I’m clear things would be quite the opposite) and the Japanese masters are all treated respectfully even in defeat. This is a top 10 martial arts movie for myself and many other fans of Kung Fu cinema so if you haven’t seen this yet then do yourself a favor and check it out ASAP! For those that already bear the DVD from bootleg hacks Red Sun, I implore you to do the accurate thing and consume this version from Dragon Dynasty… not only will there be a nice selection of bonus material included BUT it will also exhibit that martial arts fans are willing to pay for agreeable ample releases of classic Kung Fu films(especially Shaw Bros movies) . Who out there wouldn’t like to explore other sever socky masterpieces like Five Deadly Venoms, 8 Method Pole Fighter, Enter The Elephantine Dragon, The Kid With The Golden Arm, Shaolin Vs Lama, and so many others obtain more than objective a bootleg treatment? Thank you Dragon Dynasty for taking a chance on this release and hopefully it’s a step towards more quality genre titles in the come future(Approach Drink With Me is coming soon too!) .

Heroes of the East is a improbable cinematic presentation of Chinese and Japanese fighting styles set aside up against each other to view which is the better one. Gordon Liu(36 Chambers of Shaolin) stars as Ah To in this movie and does a fabulous job. The fight scenes are really well done representing both the Japanese and Chinese styles of fighting without one necessarily being the dominant one. I hope Dragon Dynasty continues its titanic DVD releases of classic films like this one.

Special Features were expedient also. They included feature commentary with Bey Logan, 22 shrimp tribute to Martial Arts icon Lau Kar-Leung, 20 diminutive interview with Gordon Liu, and a 26 limited Shaolin vs Ninja Martial Arts Weapons presentation which was very intelligent.

I picked up “A Prayer for the Dying” on a whime one day. I have always liked Mickey Rourke and I mediate he is one of the most underrated actors int he business. I never heard of this film before and bought it and not gleaming how superior it would be. Upon viewing the film I couldn’t abet thinking how remarkable better this movie could have been. Mickey Rourke gives an absolutly engaging performance as a hit man wanting to give up his dismal ways. I know that that has been extinct as a residence for a hundred movies, but this is easily one of the better of those films. Some people Bob Hoskins as miscast int he role of the Priest, but I found him to also give a expedient performance. Overall I was very moved by the film. I only wish it went a puny more in depth with Bob Hoskins character. It gives hints that he and Mickey Rourke’s character are great alike, but doesn’t go into actual depth. I have also heard that Mickey Rourke was upset with the final result of the film. Though it could have been great better, it calm comes off as a very great dramatic fraction of cinema. This film is a grand intention to use a Saturday afternoon.

As usual, Mickey Rourke trying to race from himself and everybody else, but will he succeed? .. However, I remember it as quite touching film. With IRA assassin, priest and a blind girl, you have helpless Generous and an ultimate Inferior. I would recommend this film for those who haven’t seen it. Me myself, mild waiting for DVD version…

I’m a just MJ fan and miss him each and every single day. RIP. Although I always knew he was innocent, I wanted to recognize that things were like around the time of the trial, hence purchasing this DVD. Do not rob it! Honestly, it’s fair a raze of your time and money. Random ‘celebs’ give a roar out to MJ but doesn’t really seem like anyone was there by his side as he endured this untrue allegations. The video quality is also unpleasant and the commentary is not presented in a serious tone. Honestly fans, set aside your money and see Live in Bucharest instead. Thanks for the awesome memories Michael - we worship you more.

Finally after 40 years I can discover what Kevin Brownlow was talking about in his groundbreaking tome on soundless cinema THE PARADE’S GONE BY. French director Abel Gance IS a genius! His greatest work however is not his 1927 film NAPOLEON on which his fame today is based, it is his 1923 myth LA ROUE which is finally making it to the United States 85 years after it premiered in France. While NAPOLEON is the tranquil cinema’s greatest technical achievement, it lacks the deep and profound emotional resonance to be found in LA ROUE. This simple sage of a divulge engineer, his son, and the orphan girl he raises as his daughter while harboring secret desires for her becomes more than unprejudiced a lop of life drama in Gance’s hands. He raises it to the level of high art. In all my years of soundless viewing I have never seen anything quite like this. The emotional impact of Victor Sjostrom, the visual quality of F. W. Murnau, the technical mastery of Fritz Lang, the sage quality of D.W. Griffith, it’s all here and there’s more. Originally premiered at 7 1/2 hours (spread over three nights) Gance himself reduced the film to 168 minutes for foreign distribution but that version never made it to America. This reconstruction which clocks in at 4 1/2 hours captures the scope and power of the unique presentation. Despite the length I was engrossed from first to last thanks to Gance’s astounding skills as a director and the gigantic performances from the three leads especially Severin-Mars (as the father) who died shortly after the filming was completed.

Special credit should be given to Robert Israel for his absolutely smart chunky scale symphonic catch which complements and enhances the action perfectly. This release along with his 1919 anti-war narrative J’ACCUSE (due out later this year) expose beyond a shadow of a doubt that Gance was the restful era’s greatest director and that his influence was even greater than that of D.W. Griffith. Although he made films in the sound era, Gance was like a penguin out of water, composed proper of our attention but grand more awkward. Sound turned him from an artist of the highest caliber into a mere film director whose later efforts, though not without interest, are devoid of the poetry that compose his earlier movies something special. Now thanks to Flicker Alley and the team of restorers who worked on LA ROUE and J’ACCUSE it is possible to search for his 2 major still efforts outside of NAPOLEON (which has yet to fabricate it to DVD) and sight what Kevin Brownlow was talking about all those years ago. NAPOLEON may astonish but LA ROUE devastates. If you worship quiet movies then you MUST glimpse LA ROUE in order to experience what the art of mute film was/is pleasurable of. It objective doesn’t derive better than this.

As more and more precious quiet films are emerging from over 70 years of obscurity and appearing on DVDs - thanks to dedicated people like David Shepard and his hard-working colleagues - we are able to devour absolute cinematic masterpieces like this one - and what a distinguished gem of quiet cinema it is! A creation by French genius Abel Gance, who has been best remembered for his record “Napoleon”, this very special film cannot fail to tag everyone, regardless of personal taste or knowledge of early cinema. The anecdote itself is already emotion-charged and very mighty, focussing on a humble working family in the early days of the railway, but with a twist even original filmmakers seem reluctant to tackle: the father suddenly finds himself in worship with his charming adopted daughter, and later, when learning of the girl’s adoption, the son realizes he is also in fancy with her! Along comes a suitor and finds the perfect material for emotional blackmail, but despite these complex issues, the fable is beautifully told without determined excess or melodrama, depicted by talented actors who inform their characters brilliantly, and photographed in settings with lighting and techniques only few outstanding directors have mastered so successfully. It is no wonder that Abel Gance’s name stands alongside other legendary filmmaking pioneers such as D.W. Griffith and Eisenstein, with his exercise of various photographic effects and quick montage sequences at unprejudiced the proper time to sigh thoughts and emotions, not merely actions and events. There are many such poignant moments in “La Roue” which are quite simply breathtaking, exhilarating or even gut-wrenching, but moderated so subtly with moments of gentle humour that the overall result is simply a masterpiece.

From the onset of this 4 1/2 - hour saga, “La Roue” grips your attention and puts you under its spell, despite the first half of the film being station in depressing surroundings of terrible and dirty railway workers. In complete dissimilarity, the second fragment was filmed in picturesque alpine surroundings with a completely different mood as the characters’ lives move further into tragedy. The images of people and their lives are so vividly portrayed that the viewer is swept away by them, drawn into the lives of the characters and carried to even greater emotional heights by the outstanding orchestral regain. I’m definite that even those with itsy-bitsy musical knowledge will not fail to stare the many varied melodies and instruments weak for each scene and mood, and thus relish the vast talent and skill required to give a monumental film like “La Roue” a fitting accompaniment. Robert Israel, already an accomplished musical net composer, has certainly excelled himself with this work, as did Abel Gance and no doubt everyone else interested in this project. This fact is highlighted some more by extra features such as a 16-page booklet about Abel Gance and the making of “La Roue” which gives further insight into the energy, enthusiasm and hard work assign into this film, all of which makes it an even greater thrill and privilege to have this film available on DVD and experience the artistic and emotional heights only still cinema can advance.
