Nominated for four Academy Awards, this 1970 film stars Jack Nicholson as Robert Dupea, a creative and alienated drifter who once held the promise of being a serious classical concert pianist. When we meet him, though, he’s working on an oil rig, drinking, gambling, chasing women and treating his girlfriend, Rayette, badly. Karen Murky plays Rayette, a loving and sparkling, but not very shining, waitress who yearns to be a country western singer. And the sound track by Tammy Wynette, including “Stand By Your Man” are a inequity to the pieces by Mozart and Chopin that we hear later, when Nicholson visits his dying father in the family’s secluded and upscale region. There, he enters into an impossible relationship with his brother’s sophisticated girlfriend played by Susan Anspach.

The film moves like a flash and held my interest, with a wide variety of episodes to further deepen the intensity of the Nicholson character. There’s a nude scene with Sally Struthers as one of Nicholson’s many women. There’s a scene in a diner with a waitress where Nicholson tries to area an order for items not on the menu. There’s a scene where he picks up two lesbian hitchhikers, who are planning on intelligent to Alaska. There’s a scene with Nicholson’s sister, played by Lois Smith, in a recording studio where she is playing classical music and treated with disrespect and contempt by the staff. And there’s a scene where Nicholson defends his girlfriend, Rayette, against upper class snobbery.

This is a film that works as well today as it did in the 1970s. But it must have especially timely then and viewed as a wail for independence and freedom as the alienated Nicholson honest keeps engaging on. The screenplay by Carole Eastman, under the direction of Bob Rafelson, is favorable. And there’s something about the yarn that makes us realize that there’s a runt bit of the Jack Nicholson character in all of us. Recommended.

Jack Nicholson is a amazing actor, but since the early 1970s, virtually all of his performances have been variations of Jack playing Jack. This is not to say that he has not been terrific doing this, but there is a positive impression that there hasn’t been powerful of a stretch in his acting since Chinatown. Not so with Five Easy Pieces - Nicholson completely loses himself in the character of Bobby Dupee, and gives what is arguably his best performance ever. What’s more, the film, which opened in 1970, depicts better than any other film the alienation of the generation of the leisurely 1960s-early 1970s. Nicholson’s Bobby Dupee is a talented classical musician who comes from a family of talented classical musicians. He has, however, chosen to squawk his past by living (one might almost say “hiding”) with his girl friend, Rayette (a terrific Karen Sad) among blue collar workers. The bulk of the film centers on Bobby’s return home to visit his father, who has suffered a stroke, and the interaction of Bobby (and Rayette) with various members of the household. Nicholson’s acting talent was never more apparent than in the scene where he is out walking with his wheel-chair ride father and tries to account for why he has chosen the path he has taken. The scene has an improvisational quality, and Nicholson is both natural and animated. It is a moment that can stand with anything he has done since.

As an avid fan of this movie, I have multiple versions of it ranging from the current Monterey VHS tape, various “boot” VHS tapes and DVDs, and finally both the MPI Unlit Sky DVD (sold here) and a Retromedia review copy DVD express from the source. Here are the findings based on independant research, viewing various versions, the Arnold Drake/Tom Weaver/Fred Olen Ray interview on the Retro disc, and from unprejudiced flat out watching both DVDs side by side thanks to 2 DVD players, split conceal, and lots of patience from my wife:

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flesh Eaters! Click Here

The MPI/Dark Sky DVD being sold here is Jack Curtis’ new print/edit. This same version was sold to TV in a very slightly edited version that was later released by Monterey Home Video in the 80’s. This is NOT the slightly edited TV print. It IS the whole (recent) shootin’ match.

The Retromedia copy is the theatrical print/edit that basically had about 4 minutes of “insert” shots added by theatrical distributor Michael Ripps because I philosophize he didn’t mediate the film was horrid enough! For “artistic” reasons (or more likely to accomdate the extra footage and maintain the running time around 86 minutes), Ripps also re-edited some of the scenes to prefer roughly 4 minutes of footage from Jack Curtis’ reduce. Although touted as the “uncut” version, it is not uncut.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Flesh Eaters! Click Here

The MPI/Dark Sky DVD print IS missing the following compared to the Retro version:

1) A 2 second insert shot of a bloody hand in the opening sequence.

2) A 1.5 second insert shot of a white note advertising “SEAPLANE CHARTER FLIGHTS” that was added to veil a scene edit.

3) A 4 second replacement shot with a close-up of “Bartell” twisting a knife into “Miss Winters”.

4) A 4 second replacement shot with a close-up of “Bartell” inserting a hypo into “Grant’s” arm.

5) About 3.5 minutes of the foul Nazi flashback sequence, which replaced about 19 seconds of Bartell’s flesh eater history speech. This has been added as a bonus feature to the disc for those who wish to glance it.

6) The red color-tinted “blood in the observe” sequence. Here, it appears in murky and white. In the Retromedia interview, Arnold Drake says that Jack Curtis did the color tint sequence before the film was turned over for distribution, so in theory, it should be here as well.

With the added Nazi sequence as a bonus feature, the disc is only missing about 10 to 12 seconds of inserted/replaced footage that wasn’t in the unusual movie to originate with and about 6 seconds of color tinting.

If you must have those 12 seconds of (not really) slit footage, search eBay. The “DVDs” sold there are usually the theatrical nick.

However, this version of the film includes everything else: ALL the footage edited out from the theatrical version, all the blood, all the gore…the cutting of the flesh eaters out of Grant’s leg, the skeleton supply boat captain, the see-through Omar, Bartell taking the “easy” plot out…EVERYTHING.

The film looks better than it ever has and the audio is crisp and definite. It appears Murky Sky had access to the fresh film elements whereas the theatrical print on the Retro disc looks a couple of generations removed. The extras include the Nazi sequence with outtakes(!), and a couple of TV spots. It is a five star disc all the method except that it is missing all the large special features the Retro disc was going to have. Retro made it all available when Unlit Sky was discovered to have pudgy distribution rights. What would’ve been nice is a 2-disc edition with both the director’s chop and the theatrical slice with all the extras. That would truly have been the definitive edition.

For not including the Retro bonus features (and possibly the theatrical slice as a bonus), I dock it a star. I would dock it 2 stars but the film presentation is too pleasant for this DVD to warrant a 3 star rating.

Apparently there may be a couple of different version of the film The Flesh Eaters (1964) floating around, but this is the only one I’ve ever seen, so it’s the only one I can comment on…I do want to remove a moment to thank another Amazon reviewer named Charles, who very clearly, and appreciatively, delineated the differences between the DVD version that was originally supposed to be released, versus the version that eventually was released. Written by Arnold Drake (Who Killed Teddy Own), and directed by Jack Curtis, whom some may know through the tedious 60s intriguing series Accelerate Racer (English version) as the voices of Pops Racer, Lionel Racer, Inspector Detector, and others, the film features perennial silver mask Nazi villain Martin Kosleck (Bomber’s Moon, 36 Hours, Morituri) and daytime soaper Byron Sanders (”The Doctors”, “Search for Tomorrow”), who, apparently, was the model for Salvador Dali’s oil painting “The Crucifixion”. Also appearing is Barbara Wilkin (I Saw What You Did), Rita Morley (”The Edge of Night”), and Ray Tudor, whose only other film credit is a movie titled Five the Hard Method (1969), better known to Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans as The Sidehackers, featuring the indomitable Ross Hagen, who doesn’t not appear in this film.

The movie opens on a young couple frolicking on a good-sized boat. They kill up going for a swim, followed by some ominous, yet kookie sound effects…that can’t be salubrious…and it isn’t, for the couple, at least. Next we’re at a seaport somewhere in Modern York City (peep the Empire Set Building in the skyline? ) and we meet a hunky, granite jawed, all American charter sea pilot named Grant Murdoch (Sanders) . Seems Grant’s has some fiduciary issues (he’s in hock up to his eyeballs), and is forced to get a business proposition to soar a boozy actress named Laura Winters (Morley), and her buxomlicious secretary Jan Letterman (Wilkin) to a spot called Provincetown, despite a inappropriate awesome tropical storm exciting into the plot. The trio occupy off, but soon accelerate into difficulties as the plane’s engine conks out, and they had to state down on the beach of what they contain to be an uninhabited island…turns out the island isn’t completely uninhabited as no sooner do they land than they meet Professor Peter Bartell (Kosleck), a marine biologist camped on the beach studying shellfish, or so he claims. The group shacks up in the Professor’s tent while the storm blows over, some stuff happens, the plane is eventually lost, Ms. Winters is in need of her `medicine (one of her suitcases, left on the plane, was filled with nothing but booze), the beach is cloak with the bones of fish corpses, and Grant begins to suspect the Professor has more of an interest on the island than unprejudiced crustaceans. Soon it’s discovered the waters around the island are teeming with runt, parasitic flesh eating life forms, and the group has no means of escaping. But wait, there’s some dingus on a raft coming towards the island, a really annoying hepcat, beatnik, be-bopping fool named Omar (Tudor), who sadly makes it to the beach intact…eventually Bartell’s relationship with the parasitic creatures along with his contaminated plans becomes definite, all leading up to a accurate doozy of a finale.

This movie definitely had its flaws, the main one being the didactic, expository scripting, but in terms of sleazy, schlocky sci-fi cinema, it most definitely hit the place. One of my common scenes keen Grant getting some of the parasites on his leg, and Professor Bartell performing some on the beach surgery with his knife…after removing the creatures from Grant’s badly injured leg, Bartell yells to Jan for bandages, to which she promptly removes her shirt…hello see candy…hotchie mama! Okay, she was wearing a bra, but smooth, you gotta treasure a woman of action, willing to doff her clothing in a time of need. As far as the performances, I view most did very well (I really hated Tudor’s beatnik character, but found solace in his eventual fate) . Were they predictable? Perhaps, but predictable with flair… Kosleck’s played a similar character in numerous films, but I never seem to rep tired of it…you wacky angry scientist types, how could I not esteem you? As far as Sanders, well, he objective seemed like a soap opera actor in a sci-fi/horror film, his strong features placing him squarely in the role of the hero. I mediate my well-liked character was of Laura Winters, played by Rita Morley. I couldn’t choose if I liked her character better drunk or sober. Drunk, she was splendid silly, while sober, she was kinda smarmy, condescending, and honest a lot of fun to stare. Some aspects of the film didn’t really jibe for me, like after Grant’s incident with the parasitic creatures chewing up his leg and subsequent hack surgery, we study him bounding about like he was never distress (perhaps the filmmakers forgot to snarl him he was supposed to be injured, or his character was a snappily healer) . Also, if Ms. Winters was the complete boozehound she was made out to be, I would have fully expected her to be suffering from a serious case of the D.T. (delirium tremors) once she was gash off…one last thing, what the hell was Bartell doing with a giant solar collector on the beach? Ah well, given how mighty fun I had with the rest of the film, I explain these were relatively minor points. The special effects were pure bargain basement, mostly fascinating someone manipulating the film negative (scratching it or such), but it worked for me (when you’re dealing with minimal budgets, you sometimes have to resort to the most economical methods) . The creature effects approach the slay were most friendly, and I was surprised to scrutinize a couple of fairly gory sequences. All in all, given this was director Curtis’ one and only film, I’d say it was one hell of an misfortune, and definitely worth checking out if you dig this sort of thing. One tantalizing credit has Radley Metzger as the film editor here…if you’re unusual with Metzger, he’s basically one of the pioneers of adult cinema, and the inspiration for Burt Reynolds’ character in the Paul Thomas Anderson Boogie Nights (1997) .

The widescreen (1.85:1) anamorphic describe on this Gloomy Sky Films DVD release is most profitable in terms of clarity, distinguished better than I would have expected, and the audio is very distinct. Extras include two trailers for the film, along with a deleted, lurid, Nazi experiment sequence, and outtakes. It seems Fred Olin Ray’s Retromedia group was originally going to release this DVD, and they even got film historian Tom Weaver to do a commentary track, but that didn’t execute it to this release, which is too dreadful as I’m determined he would have a lot of spirited bits of information to recount.

Cookieman108

By the method, the artwork on the DVD case for this film may give the impression the film is in color, but it’s not…it’s beautiful dark and white, through and through (I guess there was a color sequence advance the extinguish in one version of the film, but that’s not the version on this DVD) .

Meryl Streep is firing on all cylinders in this knowing portrayal (and movie) of Lindy Chamberlain. I can’t maintain she didn’t fetch the Oscar for this one. Stripping away all possible mannerisms (twitchy eyes, flighty hands, dramatic pauses) and adopting a steeled spy, Streep transforms herself into the most dislikable (and inspiring!) victim she has yet played. It’s almost as if the bones of her face have been replaced by iron. People alway mumble about her accents, but the accent is always the least of her characterizations. Her ability to adopt the study and simply the BEING of her characters is unparalleled. This is really hide acting at its best. And this is a huge film, too, for its observations into how an entire culture can become caught up in the guilt or innocence of one person they don’t even know (O.J., anyone? )

The epic of the baby who was taken by a dingo was perhaps the most newsworthy of the 1980’s. I was at the time a master control operator at Channel Seven in Melbourne and on duty when the news of a missing baby at Ayres Rock in Central Australia came thru. I had the job of organizing the television signals from the Rock to our network in Melbourne.

It was quite a task and seeing the events unfold on the DVD, I again revisited my contain section of the overall describe of history.

Further to this event, my 3 year primitive daughter [Nicolette] was eventually to play the role of Kahalia Chamberlain in Fred Schepschi’s film and appears in the final 3 scenes.

I smooth work in the TV/Film industry and occasionally spy support at this well-behaved fraction of dramatised history as a agreeable fraction of work, accurately played out and presented.

History proved the innocence of Lindy and the incompetence of our forensic work, however, hindsight is a astonishing thing

As an artist and animation buff, I must say this film is a work of art. I’m not a titanic Bakshi fan either, I simply can’t ignore the truth. There are definitely things about his style that annoy me, like his attraction to larger women, so distinguished that they are practically all he uses. His, repulsive yet unprejudiced style and his grim though realistic plan of society. Honestly, what makes this film glance so marvelous is the rotoscoping. Now, I’m not saying every animation studio should capture it up, but since most non-Disney entertaining films are so badly attractive maybe it would be for the best. Anyway, the dialogue is titanic, though some of the protagonists could have been a lot more likable. I’m not saying that storywise this film is advantageous to look, it’s a ravishing shadowy yarn, and even the victorius ending doesn’t alter that. But speaking as someone who has seen tons and tons of inspiring films, this movie is so beautifully done that you can’t catch your eyes away from it no matter how depressing and sometimes annoying the legend might rep. Now I noticed one reviewer calling this film a failure because it was supposed to be a history of music and yet it had a few flaws here and there in its facts. This movie was in no arrangement a failure as to what it site out to do. It was about perseverence, and destiny, and it’s lesson about the evolution of music in America was beautifully executed. Don’t contain those other reviewers. If you care for dazzling animation, dialogue, and dramatic scenes, you’ll luxuriate in this film. Don’t catch it as a cartoon babysitter for your shrimp kids though…

I watched American Pop for the first time after seeing a promo for it on the Anniversary Edition DVD of Heavy Metal. I loved Heavy Metal so I figured why not try this one out since it seems to be of a similar genre. Boy was I cheerful I did…

Not only did I have no clue the movie was made in the early 80’s wheh I watched it in 1999, but I was absolutely floored by the fluid animation that was produced by Bakshi’s technique of Rotoscoping that was also traditional in Heavy Metal, Wizards, and Lord of the Rings…

The animation and account line were some of the best I have seen…in any movie!! I never examine many dvd’s more than once but this one I have gotten through at least 5 times. It is an absolute masterpiece in animation and Bakshi’s best work to date.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Pop! Click Here

Rotoscoping animation is largely misunderstood and doesn’t fetch enough credit. If more animation was done this method, adults would probably relish more non-Disneyesque type features geared towards older audiences.

Don’t miss this flick if you are a fan of pleasant animation…

Even though it’s been more than 20 years since its recent release, 1982’s THE Cross Insensible is quiet an impressive marvel of low-budget filmmaking. It does have its palpable flaws, but this first feature-length directorial concern from SPIDERMAN’s (2002) Sam Raimi, produced on a shoestring budget of circa $350,000, offers clever special FX, spellbinding make-up work, relentless shocks, and knowing direction and camera work. And of mighty imprint to genre fans, it highlights Raimi’s knack for pushing violence and gore to such an shameful that it becomes funny or farcical, a characteristic that is enhanced by the slapstick talents of actor Bruce Campbell (who would himself become a cult hero due to his work in this and other Raimi films) .

The myth involves a group of college students who, during a weekend getaway, rep a Sumerian Book of the Humdrum in an stale wilderness cabin they’ve rented. When they unwittingly unleash contaminated spirits and demons while reading incantations from the book, that’s when the true havoc–and the steady fun for the audience–begins. As each of the kids, one by one, are possessed by the demons they’ve loosed, body parts and bodily fluids go a-flying until only one young man is left to face down the Base Insensible. A simple site with a simple plot up, but Raimi and Campbell effectively milk it for all the scares and all the laughs they can procure.

There are several editions of THE Corrupt Monotonous available on DVD, most of which near from the extraordinary folks at Anchor Bay. Most are of large quality and offer beautifully restored digital transfers of this cult classic. The best discs also include feature commentaries from Raimi and Campbell.

This is one of the greatest anxiety films ever made. Some people may bag the special effects work faded by todays standards, but for a low-budget film as this is they are suited and charged with a weirdly supernatural energy; something one never sees today in the sizable production alarm films.

However, this review is mainly going to be about the represent format. Deplorable Uninteresting was filmed in 16mm, which is a full-screen format, not widescreen.

BEWARE of the so called “widescreen” versions: Book of the Stupid Puny Edition, and the other editions from Anchor Bay. Nothing has been added to sides of the narrate to gain it wider; instead the top and bottom of the film have been prick away to do it study like a original theatre film. Instead of more, you actually gett less. In some parts of the movie this makes an considerable differance; in the close-ups of faces, parts like the chins are now gone (…) ; other necessary details also go, like when the trap-door in the floor opens and we examine down into the cellar, the lower edge of the opening is gone, so we don’t discover the entrance in its whole.

The full-screen version is composed available, with friendly describe quality, in the Elite Entertainment edition.

It’s been many years since I had seen “The Mammoth Locomotive Amble”, and it was a staunch pleasure to examine it again. With so many other reviews, I don’t mediate I need to summarize the set.

Anchor Bay, as usual, has given us a DVD that is glorious to discover at, with only a few areas where the age of the film is apparent. This is widescreen and I can’t imagine watching this film any other scheme. The sound is sparkling powerful what you would examine for a 1956 release.

Fess Parker and Jeffrey Hunter are resplendent as the lead protagonists, with Jeff York also registering as one of Andrews’ Raiders who would rather fight, than follow the “veil and dagger” routine. Of course, York played Mike Fink–”King of the River”–opposite Fess Parker’s Davy Crockett.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Great Locomotive Chase! Click Here

This movie is a dream for railroad buffs–old steam trains peaceful provide a thrill for many people. It is also much for people enthusiastic in the civil war, being based on exact events, although I suspect history scholars might accept it too superficial. However, the purpose of this movie is to entertain fans of all ages–not to win bogged down in too worthy detail.

Parents should win this movie a delight to witness with their children, especially young boys. The place is not complicated–there is plenty of action–and while shots are fired, and some fists flit, there is none of the more graphic violence that today’s films seem to wallow in.

Like other reviewers, I would have liked some “extras”. Comments from Fess Parker–now a successful California wine-maker–added a lot to Disney’s Davy Crockett collection. Mr. Parker’s memories of this film would have been a nice plus. Sadly, Jeffrey Hunter passed away at a young age, during the 1960s.

Perhaps some day there will be a “deluxe” edition from Disney–but, in the mean time, we must thank Anchor Bay for giving us this highly watchable version.

The movie is outstanding. Fess Parker and the rest turn in estimable performances. This bright tale is based on the accurate to life incident that took site during the Civil War. From what I have heard there were only a couple minor changes in the recreation of the tale. Walt Disney made astounding movies during the Fifties and Sixties that were grand for the whole family to luxuriate in together. I am happy they are now releasing these movies to DVD. My only complaint is that there seems to be an yell with quantity instead of quality. They seem more fervent in releasing a mountainous number of movies than worrying about the condition of them. Now I’m am as anxious as the next person to earn all their live action movies out but I hope they begin taking the time to realize they need to monitor the quality control. I don’t need the extras on this first release. Once they have released all the movies they exercise to rush on “The Extraordinary World of Disney” then they can go wait on and do Platinum Editions. I will be overjoyed with honest the movie since there are so many more they need to release like “Dr. Syn, alias Scarecrow” and “The Swamp Fox” that I can be joyful with unbiased the basics but I want the movie to have arresting report and sound quality. Some of the fresh live action movies have been immense quality (e.g. Three Lives of Thomasina) and some have been abominable (e.g. “The Jog of Shapely Gann) . I hope someone from Disney is paying attention to Amazons reviews because if they don’t they may net their DVDs aren’t selling so well. Fortunately this DVD portray and sound quality are nicely restored. There are no extra features.

Jules Dassin does have a seat of choice in the gallery of Movie History. The movies he directed in Hollywood in the leisurely forties are now classics and his courage under the Mc Carthy era demands our utmost respect. Exiled in France, he directed RIFIFI aka ” Du Rififi Chez Les Hommes ” in 1954 based on a Série Noire fresh of Auguste le Breton. And it’s simply one of the best films noirs ever made.

Jean Servais is perfect as a french Bogart marked by tuberculosis, Robert Hossein, in his first role, plain as a drug addict tougher than George Raft and Jules Dassin himself, in the role of an italian poor guy, very convincing. Add a incredible singing act of Magali Noël, the french starlet of the sixties, the gargantuan Alexandre - The Children of Paradise - Trauner as art director and the 30 minutes anthology scene, without musical collect nor dialogs, of the robbery and you have a movie you can’t neglect if you are a apt movie lover.

The copy presented in this Criterion DVD release is definitive and the 25 minutes interview with Jules Dassin a bonus feature very appreciated. There is also the choice between the french subtitled version and a dubbed version for the idle ones. How can you quiet hesitate! Go, prefer and be satisfied.

Technically, now, this film transfer is outstanding - the characterize is superbly obvious, better in fact than a restored print recently screened in Sydney.

*

For me, the film itself gets better with each viewing. Kind of unbelievable considering this is overtly a suspense thriller, where not lustrous the outcome should be crucial - perhaps this reveals that it is more a character watch, particularly a rumination on a character accepting his fate, a fate portrayed as virtually predestined. Also there is a sense that Dassin delights in the making of this represent - his performance as Cesare the Milanese is similarly brimming with involved charm. The production beget by Alexandre Trauner (Les Enfants du Paradis) is another factor in allowing enjoyment to grow with each viewing - the film looks astonishing. There’s a sense that each carefully considered allotment of the film is notable, and that to change any would be to the detriment of the film as a whole - a minute like the feeling inspired by a gargantuan musical symphony; possibly it’s a miniature ironic then that the one questionable element is the title song! In the notes, Dassin is said to have rued his dismissal of an alternative, and at the time largely unknown, songwriter - Charles Aznavour!

It is also fantastic to judge that for decades this film was rarely available for public screening and not obtainable on video. It deserves to be seen by everyone with a fancy of cinema. A truly ample film.

“A Petite Case of Kill” represented a welcome change of flow in 1938 for Edward G Robinson whereby he was able to send up his gangster image. Robinson plays Remy Marcos, a bootlegger during prohibition who goes straight with its repeal and into the legitimate brewery business. The only spot is that his beer tastes lousy and business is awful now that the suckers are not forced to pick his product through strong arm tactics.

The film was written by Damon Runyon, among others, and it reflects this with the slang and wealth of “minute” characters which occupy the film. The premise of the crook trying to go straight is a intelligent sinful for the hilarious comedy which follows, including Remy’s wife Ruth Donnelly, flicking between highbrow talk and slang as she goes up market and pleasurable relieve from Allen Jenkins, Ed Brophy and others as thugs who have to toe the line. Even one of the Insensible Waste Kids appears as the child from the Orphanage Remy grew up in and chosen to expend a month in Remy’s house. The scene at the orphanage with Margaret Hamilton, “Ain’t changed a bit, as slick as a horse hair couch” says Remy to her, is as comical as anything in any film of the thirties. Also, the scene when the boys discuss the disposal of 4 lifeless bodies is side splitting. As the site progresses, the jokes pile up, one after another, never letting up legal to the advantageous carry out.

The DVD print is beneficial and there is the usual sterling list of extras which Warner Brothers offer on their DVDs. The documentary commentary is more sharp than the hesitant and repetitive drone of the verbal commentary which can be played with the film. A pity too, because the commentator has some worthwhile observations to perform and places the film squarely in its context of the 1938 Warner Brother’s production line.

If the DVD is purchased as fragment of the Warner’s Tough Guys Collection of which it is the forgotten gem, it is tall value.

“A Diminutive Case of Slay” led me to comparisons with “Arsenic and Primitive Lace”. Maybe it’s the bothersome corpses, the underworld characters, the clueless relatives, or the bumbling law enforcement characters but there is definitely a similarity. Most of all, the similarity is that the movies are quite comic and very exquisite. “Arsenic and Feeble Lace” scores higher in my book due to the quality of the acting, directing and writing but both are well worth the time. Most people are aquainted with “Archaic Lace” and, if not, it’s fairly available . This was the first oppotunity I had to behold “A Limited Case of Destroy”.

The best portion of ASCOM is the preformance of Edward G. Robinson; one of the grand actors of the 30’s and 40’s. He plays a obliging “heavy” yet fits accurate in with the humor. The only other name in the cast that I recognized was the wisenheimer sidekick character actor Allen Jenkins. The station, written in piece by Damon Runyon, has a Prohibition bootlegger go legitimate after booze was legalized again. When the bootlegger (Robinson) had a monopoly, it didn’t matter what his beer tasted like. Once the professionals got benefit into the market, no one wanted his mark. So the money problems mount up, he’s in debt, his daughter is going to win married and he has to pay off his loan or lose everything. The stage is dwelling for a lot of intriguing twists and turns.

If ASCOM has a short coming (and this wouldn’t have mattered considerable assist in 1937) it’s that some of what we are asked to pick up is a bit too worthy. I’m obvious fans of “CSI” would have a fit with the outcome. However, the movie puts us in a mood to relax and indulge in so why bother with such details. “A Limited Case of Destroy” is one of those films I like to call a retro-sleeper.

Well, I opinion it would never approach out on DVD. Perhaps it’s my passion for all things customary Egyptian, but I have always loved this wonderfully palatable fable. Howard Hawks was a director who steadfastly refused to be pigeon-holed, making everything from Bogey’s “The Expansive Sleep” to sci-fi classic “The Thing” (although he credited editor Christian Nyby instead of himself) to stock car racing “Red Line 7000.” Here he takes a shot at “historical” anecdote and does a damned captivating job of it. Pharaoh Jack Hawkins plays straightman to Joan Collins’ campy concubine while James Robertson Justice does a terrific job of keeping a straight face as a tomb architect. Amidst all the stone monuments, the only thing wooden is Dewey Martin as Justice’s son. All this may not sound like a **** movie, but it’s a guilty pleasure I’ve watched so many times on VHS that it’s embarrassing. That’s gotta be worth extra credit.

The only thing that mars this delicate presentation is Bogdavoch’s commentary. Not only does he have nothing definite to say about the film, he actually has NOTHING to say at all. His presence on the track can only be explained by his having an feeble taped interview with Hawks in which he leads the director to discuss DeMille and dump on his movie. A total extinguish of time when there is so powerful to inspect on cover. But gain it anyway! It’s a immense ‘Land’.”
