The Marx Brothers in less-than-stellar form. Based on the hit Broadway play, “Room Service” (1938) was the only film not written specifically for the team. The result is an awkward fit, but there are a few priceless moments within the situation-comedy framework. Regrettably, the harp and piano solos have been jettisoned while Margaret Dumont’s presence is sorely missed. “Room Service” should be viewed as a well-intentioned, yet unsuccessful experiment. Sadly, “At the Circus” (1939) ranks as the Marxes’ worst film. Groucho, Harpo and Chico are brought down by weak material, an obvious lack of enthusiasm, and Kenny Baker’s annoying presence. Strictly for completists.

The Marx Brothers are a comedy taste..part wit/part slapstick. Sometime when you want wit, you get slap stick…sometimes it works and others it fails. In these two features there is an surity in both films

The highlight of Circus is Groucho singing Lydia the Tattoed Lady, one of his classics songs (He saings like George Burns-but it works). After that it seem the normal slapstick treads that have been played before by the Brothers Marx, Chico’s Italian wears thin and Harpo is give very little to do. The weight falls to the Grouch man who holds the film lame plot together

Writer Morrie Rysind gave the Marxs free reign in his script for room Service and its works. However it seemed too rehearsed for the comedy to flow. The comedy is overrated, but works. The room service steals scenes which played well in A Night at the Opera. The film service also stars a young Lucille Ball (pre I Love Lucy days)and Ann Miller (pre MGM dance Musicals), watch them in this 1938 classic and see what they became.

In this Marx Double feature, you get both the best (Room Service) and the one of the Worst (At the Circus..the worst in my opinion was Go West).These were not the Duck Soup/Horse Feathers/Day at the Races Marxes, they seem too rehearsed and not as funny Well the movies are part of their mythos, so they are worth an airing

A cinematic version of Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS ranks up with the hope that Lucas will indeed make another Star Wars Trilogy, and, I think I can safely say, this is one of the most anticipated films in the movie industry’s long and checkered history. You would think it’s movie paradise, considering Lucas has been in the midst of another Star Wars trilogy and LORD OF THE RINGS has finally got a cinema deal (live action!), but PHANTOM MENACE proved something of a disappointment (Mesa Jar Jar Binks!), and I think quite a few people will enter into the theatre with a certain amount of trepidation.

There’s a reason for that. Three animated Tolkien films have been released with very problematic results. The 1978 Bakshi release is just embarrassing; the film is both incoherent and confusing.

Rankin & Bass’s two movies are fine for little kids; those two films are Tolkien for Saturday Morning cartoons. They proved my introduction to Tolkien and for that I am thankful, but the movies still fail to capture the grandeur of Tolkien’s imagination.

There are two things to consider here about a work of literature. Although all good literature has a polarization effect on its readers, this work has a gigantic legion of followers which are extremely dedicated to Tolkien’s vision (I count myself a member of this camp). The other camp cannot figure out what the big fuss is about and why they should care about the novel.

Now, there’s a reason why all this is relevant to the film: had Peter Jackson gone to far either way the film would have fallen apart. Appeal to much to the fan-base and you loose the general movie-goer. Appeal to much to the movie-goer, and you’ll lose the fan-base.

So when the fan base learned of Peter Jackson’s decision to film all three films at once, an unprecedented move in movie history, most of us really wanted it to be good but were just simply afraid. We’ve already been burnt. Would it be so bad that it would alienate both fan base and those who are just looking for a good movie?

Not only does Peter Jackson’s film work, it’s glorious, beautiful, has all the myth and grandeur of the book. Jackson, a Tolkien fanatic, could have gotten so involved with bringing out the extremely detailed world Tolkien gave us that the pacing would suffer or we’d lose patience with all these obscure details which would alienate the regular movie goer. Not only does he not alienate the general movie goer, but he entices the fan base so much they can’t help but fall in love with his vision of Tolkien’s world.

The only real flaw is how rushed first section of the movie is. Although I can understand cutting the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil, the way they handled getting the hobbits out of the Shire was unacceptable. There is not that sense of camaraderie between the Hobbits that there is in the book, there is no “conspiracy,” and Merry and Pippin just join without any questioning from Sam and Frodo. While Jackson does a good job at building the Hobbits’ characters and establishing their personalities, I couldn’t come up with a good reason why Frodo and Sam would just let Merry and Pippin join them.

The Prancing Pony is worst. There is no questioning from the Hobbits about Aragorn proving himself, there is no scene about him asking them to trust him, and the whole sequence feels much too rushed. Sam only questions Aragorn while they’re actually out of the inn and traveling.

Thankfully, however, that is the only real flaw. The rest of the things the script changed (tightening Elrond’s council, the expansion of Arwen, cutting Sam from the Galadriel mirror sequence, tempting Aragorn with the ring, etc) I can see why they did it for dramatic tension. I also liked the way they handled Elrond’s council, because that could have ruined the movie like it did with Bakshi’s. They had established and covered much of the material in that chapter elsewhere by means of voice-over prologue and actually showing the viewer what is happening (especially with the Isengard sequences), and as a result lessened the screentime of that scene and helping with the dramatics of it.

As for the controversial expansion of Arwen, I tend to agree with the film makers in their decision to enlarge her role. By making her part of the Ford sequence it introduces the character and establishes her in the viewer’s mind, and the relationship between Arwen and Aragorn is more fully explored. As for their romantic interlude in Rivendell, not only do I agree with that but think it should have been done in the book. Tolkien did not know who Strider was when he was first writing FELLOWSHIP, and did not go back and change the scenes to further explain the romance between Arwen and Aragorn, and by not including a scene in Rivendell to establish their love for one another lessens by far the impact of their union in Part III, and (for once) this romantic scene is actually an improvement on the book. As for her role in the Flight at the Ford, for the movie they made the right choice though the book is still preferable.

In achieving the balance between fan base and the more causal fan, this film is a spectacular success. Making a movie out of a book the size of Fellowship, the fact is you will have to condense, tighten, rearrange, and make changes for dramatic tensions. The mediums are different, and you cannot have a direct translation from a book to a film. Despite of what they cut, the movie still clocks in at three hours, which is very generous. The real problem with this film, as others noted, is it’s going to be a full two years before we finally get to watch THE RETURN OF THE KING.

In the end, we get a movie that stays true to the SPIRIT of the book. This is what we Tolkien fans have long been waiting for. Thank you so much Peter Jackson and your cast and crew.

I already reviewed the regular “Motion Picture Trilogy” containing the non-extended editions of the legendary Lord of The Rings masterpieces on one set. However, this newest edition is a grand improvement on the previous edition. This item is a much, MUCH better investment than the old theatrical counterparts and is perhaps the greatest DVD purchase one will likely ever make.

A lot “Director’s Cut” scenes are usually just added footage that doesn’t do a whole lot to add onto the theatrical edition of movies with examples like Star Wars, Manhunter, or even most of the “Aliens” movies as well. The extra material is just that, extras, that wouldn’t kill me to never see again.

It’s a totally different story altogether with the “Lord Of The Rings” movies altogether. While the regular theatrical editions were mind-blowing, the extended cuts of the same films do wonders in fleshing out the story and expanding the characters a lot more. Several characters that were not much more than background people are shown much more screen time, stories are greatly expanded, other scenes are much more meaningful, and the movies overall have a totally different feel altogether thanks to all of the extra footage that was not included on the theatrical editions. Now as I watch them, the old editions of them are rendered almost completely obsolete due to the chopped up nature of them. I sometimes wonder if Peter Jackson grimaced when he had to leave a lot of extra shots out of the movies to fit them onto the theatres when they were released.

“Fellowship” has 30 minutes of extra footage included to a length of 3 and a half hours. “The Two Towers” was extended 43 minutes to a total of 3 hours and 42 minutes and finally “The Return of The King” is extended by a grand 50 minutes and the ultimate result is a whopping 4 hours and 11 minutes long! I don’t know about you but I don’t know how one can make a longer movie like this but Jackson did it! The grand total of all three extended editions is at least an astronomical 11 hours long! This is just the movies themselves.

As for all of the extras on the “Extended Editions”, there are over a days worth of extras for surf through on the latter two discs of each film set. The things on them are too great to explain in detail with this review.

Whether you buy them individually or all at once on this massive gift set, “The Lord of The Rings” trilogy goes down as the greatest trilogy of all time. You could not make a better purchase. I swear it!

Poor, abandoned kitten Oliver is homeless on the streets of 1980s New York City, until he meets a streetwise dog named Dodger. There’s no doubt about it, Disney’s wonderfully charming classic “Oliver and Company” is one of the most dated animated films you’ll ever see. Of course, that’s a big part of its charm. What could be more “`80s” than 1980s New York City? How about the music of Billy Joel and Huey Lewis? I know they were two favorites of mine in the `80s! Okay, to be honest, Billy Joel and Huey Lewis aside, the `80s is something you look back on and mock rather than view fondly, especially the clothes, and Oliver and Company captures that aspect, along with many others, perfectly. So, it’s dated. Everything is, really. Call it nostalgia. Anywho, as strongly `80s as “Oliver and Company” is, it rises above it! It is simply a great film! That’s something that’s easy to forget if you haven’t seen it in a while. “Oliver and Company” is Disney’s twist on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” and it is an EXCELLENT modernization! All the best characters are there, and the cast is star-studded! The piano man himself, Billy Joel, voices the artful Dodger, a canine so cool he puts Snoopy to shame (we still love ya, Snoopy)! The hilarious Cheech Marin is Tito the Chihuahua, animation alumnus Dom Deluise is Fagin, the divine Bette Midler is one of Disney’s funniest characters as Georgette, Robert Loggia is the excellently slimy villain, Sykes, and a very young Joey Lawrence plays Oliver, just to name a few! With seamlessly incorporated computer animation and painstakingly acquired “dog’s eye view” shots of New York City, “Oliver and Company” was the film that kicked off Disney’s big comeback as an animation heavyweight, though this cute little film was easily forgotten in the wake of Disney’s mega-hit, “The Little Mermaid,” the following year. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the magic of “Oliver and Company” yourself! Even the soundtrack is terrific, despite that it is powerfully “80s.” And, it’s amazing how well Disney has translated “Oliver Twist” into a tale about cats and dogs on the streets of New York without losing the heart of the tale and its underlying messages. The DVD is fantastic as well, especially for a single-disc Disney release! This is the way DVDs should be! In addition to the widescreen presentation of the film, you get a behind the scenes featurette from the original theatrical release, 2 shorter featurettes, a TV spot, theatrical trailers, a scrapbook gallery of art and other materials, 2 sing-along-songs, and the best part: You get two classic Disney shorts! Included as extras are “Puss Cafe,” a hilarious Pluto cartoon where the pup goes up against two troublesome felines invading his backyard, and “Lend a Paw,” the Oscar winning Mickey Mouse short in which Pluto saves a kitten from drowning and quickly regrets it. Outstanding stuff, and an amazing selection of extras for a single-disc Disney DVD! Rediscover this Disney Classic on DVD today! You won’t regret it!

During the 80’s, the studio hit an artistic, creative, and commercial slump. However, I still find that I quite enjoy Disney’s 80’s films, many of which experimented with computer animation, non-musical storylines, and different source materials. One of my favorite pre-Little Mermaid 80’s Disney films is Oliver and Company. Boasting a soundtrack filled with great songs and a wonderful cast of characters, Oliver and Company finally gets the DVD treatment, albeit a less-than-stellar one.

For one, the transfer is good, but it could be much better and it has a fair amount of grain.

The bonus features could have been much better as well. A few fluff EPK-type featurettes, which are nice, but still fluffy, are sadly enough the meat of the bonuses. Also included, fortunately, are the original trailer, original TV spot, and the 1995 re-release trailer. Two sing-alongs are included as well as two classic Disney short cartoons.

Overall, it’s nice to see Oliver and Company on DVD at last. This is probably the best DVD edition Disney will give it for at least a while, so if you’re considering picking it up, go for it.

I can’t think of a big enough cynic who can dismiss the charms of this movie. On my list, Paper Moon qualifies as one of the best comedies ever made, a mixture of childlike wonder and wry sarcasm, simultaneously detached in its narrative approach (thanks to amazing understated camerawork) and intimate.

The script has no faults. Scenes hurtle forward at a brisk but never hyper pace, every moment pregnant with character development and sharp dialogue. Ryan and Tatum O’Neal’s exchanges are pristine in their comic timing, side-splitting and touching at the same time, effortlessly exploiting the chemistry between father and daughter. Their scenes in the car are so hilarious and endearing that you’d wish you could ride with them for hours longer. And the film is rich in period flavour, from the stark black-and-white photography to the music to every character, evoking a sense of longing for a more innocent age without ever lapsing into downright nostalgia. The themes — the vagabond heart which can’t stand still, growing up, identity, friendship — ring as true today as they always did.

I saw this movie when I was quite young and it’s never lost its magical hold on me. Watch it again even if you have already; you will discover something new every time.

Adapted from the matchless novel “Addie Pray” by Joe David Brown, Paper Moon is set in the Midwest/dustbowl during the Great Depression/Roosevelt era. One-of-a-kind directing by Peter Bogdanovich, beautiful black & white cinematography, a great musical score with snippets of old time radio shows like Fibber McGee & Molly, Jack Benny and a host of others.

Real-life father & daughter duo, Ryan & Tatum O’Neil team up in this gem of a movie.

Ryan plays Moses Pray. A slick, sliver-tongued, gold toothed, travelling huckster & who always has a new con to turn up his sleeve such as door to door Bible selling to recently widowed women, bootlegging, short changing, and a “car swappin’ wrasslin’ match” between Moses and a very young Randy Quaid. Tatum plays Addie and garnered the coveted Oscar for her performance at the tender age of 10. Addie decides to get in on many of the cons and becomes quite a prolific short change artist. Addie decides on her own to take Moses’ last name and travel with him under the guise as his daughter. In one of the best scenes in the movie they deal with whether or not Addie is Moses’ illegitimate daughter. That scene is set in a diner while drinking NeHi’s and eating Coney Islands. Addie is sure that Moses is, indeed, her father as she states, “We got the SAME jaw!” Moses responds and says, “I know a lady who has the jaw of a bullfrog but that doesn’t mean that she’s the damn things mother!” Addie asks Moses, “You meet my mamma in a barroom?” (implying that her mamma was a prostitute). Moses comes right back asking Addie, “You think that just because a man meets a woman in a barroom means that they get a baby?” Ryan and Tatum’s bantering repartee is natural, hilarious and touching all at the same time.

The Prays fall “prey” to a con played on them (well, Moses anyway) as the film progesses, by a hootchie-cootchie sideshow carnival dancer/prostitute named Miss Trixie Delight, adeptly played by Madelyn Kahn who was also nominated for an Oscar. The sneaky and a little jealous Addie deals with Miss Trixie in her own time and also helps out Miss Trixie’s maid, Imogene and gives her money to return back to her family.

This is a great family movie with a touching father/daughter story to share. No nudity, few “cuss” words, and an all-around crowd pleaser whether you are 6 or 106. I don’t mind telling you that this is my favorite movie of all time and I have viewed it upwards of 100 times. I still laugh, cry, and go through a multitude of emotions no matter how many times a watch the film. Certainly, a hallmark of a great cinematic masterpiece! Happy Watching!

This movie is much more than an outrageous and unique comedy. One reason for its cult following has been consistently missed by the critics: repeated viewings reveal surprising layers of meaning and an intricate web of symbolism.

At the heart of this film is the timeless debate known as “nature vs. nurture”: are we more a product of our genes, or of our environment? How much of an effect does our upbringing have on our likelihood to turn out as either a law-abiding member of society (a society which in this movie is of dubious merit, as represented by Hi’s job and his unctuous boss) or as a criminal deviant from its norms?

The symbolism in this film is rich and evocative–while always contributing to the comedy. Note how often the adult characters cry and carry on like infants. Note the way the escaped convicts are “born” into the outside world. Note the marriage of a convict and a police officer, and the difference in their families visible in the brief wedding shot. Note the juxtaposition of milk poured over cereal with the infant’s feeding bottle, as Evelle observes, “Ya don’t breast feed him, he’ll hate you for it later. That’s why we wound up in prison.” And note the frequent use of phrases such as “that’s natural,” as opposed to “you’re not being true to your nature” or “mother didn’t love me.” As Hi observes, “maybe it’s my upbringing, maybe it’s just that my genes got screwed up, I don’t know.”

The quasi-biblical, poetical and aphorism-laden language the characters use in the-state-adjacent-to-Utah is both touching and funny. Every word of the film is a finely polished gem. Ed’s little plan is “the solution to all our problems, and the answer to all our prayers.” Her infertile womb is a “rocky place where my seed can find no purchase.” And as Hi later writes in a touching letter to his dearest Edwina, “I feel the thunder gathering even now…I cannot tarry…better I should go, send you money, and let you curse my name.” On the other hand, the crotchety Arizona characters also have a remarkable literalness of expression. A packet of balloons does not blow up into funny shapes, not “unless round is funny.” And as the old codger in the bank robbery points out, “If I freeze, I can’t rightly drop, and if I drop, I’m gonna be in motion!”

Even the music in this film is perfectly executed, from the hilarious yodeling and whistling of the main theme to the way the chilling accompaniment of a nightmare is later revealed to be a haunting children’s nursery song, and then mutates into an ethereal melody in the film’s final scenes. The characters, despite their flaws, are all surprisingly sympathetic. And the film is tightly constructed, without a single unnecessary scene or moment. It ends with a bang, not a whimper, its final words resonating with significance and yet leaving one wanting more, like a swift exit after a great punch line.

At the deepest core of this film lies a mystery wrapped in an enigma: who is the once-orphaned “motorcycle demon from hell,” and what is his relation to Herbert I. McDonnough? The answer to this puzzle relates intimately to the “nature vs. nurture” theme. While I think I know the answer, I’ll leave it for you to figure out, based on the clues (”show the tattoo!”) liberally scattered throughout the film. “Okay then!”

I’ve seen Raising Arizona far more times than I can count. It is, in my humble opinion, next to Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove the most original, inventive comedy ever made.

The dialogue is absolutely razor-sharp — plenty of examples are certainly readily available in the reviews preceding this one — and the camera work is wonderful, as well. I’d rank Raising Arizona a VERY close second to Miller’s Crossing in a list of the Coen’s best films. It is admittedly not as visually stylish as Miller’s Crossing (then again, very few films ever made are), and the storyline is not as cohesive as Miller’s Crossing, Fargo, or Barton Fink. However, the film is so full of verbal gems that it definitely ranks as the Coen’s best dialogue writing effort. Cage and Hunter are wonderful, and John Goodman and William Forsythe are absolutely perfect as the Snopes brothers.

Admittedly, the DVD is nothing very special. All you really get is the more durable medium and a widescreen format. Some kind of “The Making of…” mini-documentary, or better yet, a commentary option with two or three of the actors, the director of photography, or ideally the Coens themselves would have been a priceless addition to the DVD.

Justine Waddell is truly brilliant in this skillful adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s famous classic. Her “Tess” is breathtakingly beautiful without being at all self-conscious of her looks, and is genuinely charming and adoring. Whenever Tess cries (and she does that A LOT due to her tragic circumstances), it’s impossible not to be affected or to reach quickly for the box of Kleenex.

This is a sad and compelling story set in the later part of the 19th century, about a simple country girl named Tess who is the oldest child in a poor family with many children. Due to her family’s poverty, she is forced, at 16, to find work (i.e. taking care of the fowl farm) at the great House of a family called the D’Urbervilles (whom Tess and her family are led to believe are their distant relations). Naive Tess (who then knows nothing about the “dangers” of men), is quickly courted and seduced by the young lord of the House, Alec (who has set his sights on her since the first day they meet), although she doesn’t love him. In her distress, she later packs up and leaves the House to return home; both Tess and Alec not realizing that she is already carrying his child. The child is born but later dies of illness. Tess leaves home a second time and finds work as a dairymaid in a distant place where she meets and falls in love with Angel Clare, the handsome and well-respected son of a clergyman. Angel, who is unaware of Tess’s “past”, falls in love with her and holds her in awe for her virtue, beauty, grace and goodness of heart. Tess tries to tell him of her past, but each time, fate cruelly intervenes and she never gets her chance… until it is too late. On their wedding night, Angel confesses to Tess that he has been promiscuous in the past and begs for her forgiveness. Tess readily forgives him and with this opening provided by Angel, she proceeds to tell him of her past relations with Alec and the resultant child, truly believing that Angel will forgive her as he himself has been forgiven for his own past sin. But this is not to be…. and great tragedy (Hardy-style) ensues.

I loved the novel, and find this adaptation to be one of the most supreme of period dramas ever produced. The casting, acting, directing, cinematography and screenplay are simply perfect.

I particularly enjoyed the scenes where Alec is teasing and courting Tess e.g. the very picturesque and charming moment at the strawberry garden. It is also endearing and funny to watch Alec teaching Tess how to whistle (”whistling” being necessary as his mother, the eccentric matriach of the House, insists that Tess whistles to her caged birds every morning as part of her duties). Another funny and delightful scene is when Alec asks Tess for a good-bye kiss after failing to persuade her to stay on at the House. She immediately offers him her cheek (for the kiss), glares angrily at him and says: “See how well you have mastered me!”

Inevitably, there are slight deviations from the novel e.g. Tess’s sister, Liza-Lu does not appear in the last scene (as in the book). Also, Alec’s character is portrayed in a better light in the movie i.e. he frequently shows his sincerity in loving Tess and persistently offering to take care of her. He has many faults…. but he does love her and has never abandoned her once he finds out about her destitute situation. Can’t say the same for Angel’s character, though. He can’t accept Tess because he deems Alec to be her “husband by nature” and not himself. Angel may also be suffering from broken dreams and a broken heart, but with his hypocrisy and evident cruelty, he hurts and crushes Tess more than Alec ever does.

This series (4-hour long) is a masterpiece one can watch over and over again, despite its tragic storyline. I love the theme song which is a beautiful melody that stayed in my head for days! In my personal opinion, Justine Waddell deserves an Oscar for her brilliant performance, and one fine production like this is worth 10 of Hollywood’s blockbuster-”Titanic”-type movies. Just watch this video and see if you don’t agree!

A&E’s “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” is an excellent made-for-TV adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel. A powerful story about the true nature of honor and the futileness of running from one’s past, “Tess” is no less relevant today than when it was written over one hundred years ago.

Justine Waddell stars as Tess Durbyfield, an innocent country girl who goes to live with wealthy relatives. After becoming pregnant by her rakish cousin (well played by the smirking Jason Flemyng) and then losing her baby, she attempts to embark on a new life with the upright Angel Claire (gorgeous Oliver Milburn). Fate, however, has no intention of letting her off the hook.

Great performances (especially by Milburn, in a tricky role), lush photography and good production values make this well worth checking out. The plot follows the book fairly faithfully, with only a few minor changes, and the Hardy spirit remains intact. Highly recommended, especially for fans of A&E’s Literary Series.

I saw it with my youngest daughter one day. And to be totally honest with you, I fell in love with the one of the main character Tomoya until I saw his best friend,Sunohara. I was was satisfied with Tomoya using Sunohara in his cruel pranks. But, then there are these beautiful girls, not in looks although, they are pretty as well. Then, the story unfolds into a tear jerker at times and a gut buster on the others. You start to find that these people, high schoolers are dealing with some mature issues that some adult wouldn’t be able to deal with. There is a moral like storyline and inner strength that pours out of each like Tomoya encounters including himself. I laughed until I cried and I cried through my smiles. Now, for the information that is needed to watch tis show. It is in Japanese with subtitles. The music is sweet also bubblegum pop and in Japanese. This credits are in Japanese and English. And no, you can’t change it to English and there is no dubbed version. There are 24 episodes and 6 episodes per dvd. I am shocked to be able to buy it in its original format. So, if you love animes in their original language. If you love a story of love and hope.You may even learn something about yourself through these group of high school students. This video is for you. I love watching online and then I bought it.

The second half of Clannad was really good! I especially liked that the Tomoyo Arc extra episode was included. A definate winner for any fan of the high school romance genre of anime.

First of all, I love this movie. I was quite surprised to discover it’s release on DVD, and needless to say, I grabbed it. There is no doubt that this disc is loaded with extras, but sadly, the claim that the film has been “fully restored” is extremely misleading. The advantage of these review forums, is to provide insight, from someone who has already bought the product, to those interested. And, that’s what I’m here to do.

Here are the DVD’s special features, as listed: LETTERBOXED PRESENTATION (1.85:1), REMASTERED SOUNDTRACK (in Dolby 5.1 and DTS), NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN FOOTAGE, AUDIO COMMENTARY: Jack Vacek (Cinematographer) and Warner Leighton (Editor), 3 TRAILERS (The original theatrical trailers for “GONE IN 60 SECONDS” and “THE JUNKMAN”, and another for the remastered version of “GONE IN 60 SECONDS”), EXTENSIVE BEHIND-THE-SCENES PHOTO GALLERY, DVD-ROM CAPABILITIES, INTRODUCTION with Denice Halicki (H.B. Halicki’s widow) and “Eleanor”.

Sounds very enticing, right? That’s what I thought. Hell, to be honest, I really didn’t care about the extras, as long as I could get H.B. Halicki’s original classic on DVD! Naturally, I immediately put the DVD in. Then, my dissapointment began.

Now, what the packaging WON’T tell you, and what I’m about to, is that this isn’t, in fact, a “fully restored” version of the film, but rather, one that has been doctored. Unfortunately, the entire film has been RE-SCORED with crappy music, supposedly aimed at “updating” this classic film, thereby dumping ALL the music from the original cut. Yep, the catchy opening title “GONE IN 60 SECONDS” tune is gone, along with the “SUPERMAN” tune, and everything else, as well. Needless, to say, I am very disappointed. Why do people feel the need to mess with movies, like they do? I don’t think H.B. Halicki would have been proud with what his widow has done with the rights to the film, so far.

I probably wouldn’t have minded this DVD release, if it had offered the original mono soundtrack on a separate audio channel, like most other remastered DVD’s offer. Then, I would have been fine with it, as long as I could have the version I wanted to see. Instead, anyone with hopes to get a brand new copy on either DVD or video of this classic car theft film, in it’s original format, are pretty much screwed. And, that’s too bad. So, my advice is to stick with the original out-of-print MEDIA Home Entertainment release. Believe me, that tape will still be in great demand for years to come.

One more thing, there is a website: www.gonein60seconds.com. Perhaps, this would be a great place for true fans of the film to file their complaints. And, who knows, maybe someday we will see the original version released in a respective manner on DVD.

First of all, I’ve loved this movie since I was 6 years old. My mom and dad saw it in the cinema — more than once — while they were dating in 1974. To say the least, this title holds special significance in my whole family. Which is why it’s great to see it re-released on both VHS and DVD for all to enjoy.

For those of you who, like me, have every scene, every line, every sound effect of the original movie committed to memory, you will be shocked when you play the “remastered” version. For one thing, the picture is beautiful. It’s never looked so good. And the soundtrack has never sounded so good, either — because it’s been completely redone from scratch. That’s the other thing. The sound effects are all new. Gone are the authentic, live-recorded engine sounds, tire screeches, and other hard effects. Gone also is the original music, including my favorite tune, “I Do Hope The Man Doesn’t Catch Me”, and the title song, “Gone In Sixty Seconds”. For someone looking for a true re-release of the authentic, original film, this is disappointing. But for me, someone who already owns an original copy of the old MEDIA videotape release of the film, I see this remastered version just as a fun modernization of one of my favorite flicks.

The new sound effects are beautiful. I am a sound designer among other things, and some of the new crashes and guttural V8 engine sounds made me drool. They may not be true-to-life anymore, but they are great in their own right. It’s almost surreal, seeing all these old muscle cars, but hearing crystal-clear digital stereo effects. By contrast, the disturbingly mono original dialogue track underlaid beneath them sounds almost ridiculous! Fortunately, there is no need for much talking during the 40-minute chase, easily the highlight of the film.

In short, to really enjoy the remastered version of Gone In 60 Seconds, you’ve got to take it for what it is — a modern “refreshment” of the original film. It’s been remixed to appeal more to the same young crowd who enjoyed the 2000 remake with Nicholas Cage. If you are a true Gone In 60 Seconds fan, however, don’t stop here. Go in search of the original 1974 film in all its glory, on its original video cassette. A true fan must indeed have both, for the audio differences between the two versions are so distinct, you could almost consider them two separate films.

A groundbreaking cinematic achievement (and one of the most expensive films ever produced, to that time), “Batman” was a tremendous gamble, and the story behind the ten-year struggle to bring it to the screen is fascinating! It is a tale of visionaries, beginning with Michael Uslan, a young student/Batman fan, who not only convinced his university to include comics in their curriculum, but, fired up by Richard Donner’s “Superman”, knew a Batman film could be just as powerful, and took the idea, with Batman creator Bob Kane’s blessing, to Hollywood; of Peter Gruber and Jon Peters, who listened to Uslan, after every studio had passed on it, saw the potential, and decided to gamble; of Sam Hamm, who had a “Batman” script in his head, praying to get the chance to write it; and, most importantly, of Tim Burton, whose dark, quirky sensibilities made him THE director to film it, despite only two feature films to his credit.

This remarkable story, with archival footage and new interviews, is the highlight of disc two, but there is much, much more! Did you know that Robin was scripted to make an appearance in the first film? That Sean Young, not Kim Basinger, had been cast as Vicki Vale? That the Batmobile, designed by Oscar-winner Anton Furst, could actually do 95 mph (and that Tim Burton drove it, once?) That the room where disfigured Jack Nicholson received his unsuccessful plastic surgery was actually a studio prop room? Each chapter is a revelation!

Not that there aren’t a few disappointments in the presentation; there is no chapter with deleted scenes (although a few moments are shown that never made it into the finished film…a little girl, seeing Batman, asks, in all seriousness, “Is it Halloween?”, which causes him to pause, and grin); the ‘History’ of Batman, despite a wealth of photos and clips from the comics, serials, and graphic novels, does not offer a single visual from the campy 60s TV series (whether this was a refusal by 20th Century Fox, who produced the series, to permit their use, or an attempt to distance the movie from the “ZAP! BAM! POW!” silliness is not explained). Also, the brief appearance of screen legend Jack Palance, as ‘Boss Grissom’, is largely ignored, other than in Tim Burton’s audio commentary, which is surprising. Still, many of the cast share their memories (Billy Dee Williams still expresses disappointment that he didn’t get to play ‘Two-Face’; Robert Wuhl, regret that after they rewrote his death scene to allow his character to survive, he never appeared in another film in the franchise).

I guess what I’m saying, is…chuck your old copy of “Batman”, and replace it with THIS one!

You’ll be glad you did!

This film proved to the world that comic book films could be much more than action-packed carnage festivals. This film (and the first sequel “Batman Returns”) have so much more to it than that. “Batman” is a gripping and very moving exploration of the psyche; it peers into the souls of not only the Dark Knight, but also those of the people whose lives he changes with his presence. The film is brilliantly acted by its perfectly-chosen cast, which includes Jack Nicholson (the Joker), Michael Keaton (the Batman), Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale), Micheal Gough (Alfred Pennyworth), and Robert Wuhl (Alexander Knox). Tim Burton makes perfect use of his wonderful directorial talents, Anton Furst designs a gothic, beautiful Gotham City, and Danny Elfman’s classic musical score further help make this a unique, thought-provoking, and very powerful modern classic, a masterpiece of film noir and grand opera. “Batman Returns shares these wonderful qualities, but, sadly, Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” and “Batman and Robin” lose all of that depth and meaning, and become little more than standard mindless action. But, we’ll always have Burton’s dark vision of a haunted and brooding Batman.

On Monday, February 4, 1974, soon-to-be-20-year-old Patricia Campbell Hearst (heiress and daughter of San Francisco newspaper executive Randolph Hearst) was kidnapped at gunpoint from her California apartment and stuffed into the trunk of a car being driven by one of several members of a revolutionary terrorist group calling itself “The Symbionese Liberation Army” (SLA). Thus began one of the most sensational and bizarre news stories of the late 20th century. A story which had America transfixed for more than a year-and-a-half.

This DVD program dissects the Hearst Kidnapping story from Day 1 in February 1974 until Day 592, which was the day Patty Hearst was finally taken into custody in San Francisco on September 18, 1975.

Two months after her abduction, to the amazement of her family (and the rest of America), a startling audio taped message had Patty announcing that she had joined forces with her kidnappers and was now being identified by a new name, “Tania”.

Many segments of the original audio tapes sent to authorities by the SLA (with the voices of Patty and other SLA “comrades”) are sprinkled throughout this program. The clarity of these audio tapes is quite good, too.

Patty ended up serving 22 months in prison for her part in an April 15, 1974, bank robbery, in which she was seen via the bank’s security cameras brandishing an assault rifle while several SLA members robbed the bank of $10,960 in cash (although, according to an April 24th taped message by Patty Hearst herself, the precise amount of loot that was garnered in the heist by the robbers was $10,660.02, which I thought was kind of an odd figure; I guess one of the bandits grabbed a couple of pennies from a cash drawer before departing the bank).

The video of that Hibernia Bank robbery is also featured here, and is presented in a way which makes the skin crawl a little bit more — complete with “ticking clock” and two “gunshot” sound effects. And it amazes me how clear that security-camera video footage is of that robbery. It looks in excellent condition, quality-wise. Patty’s movements (and identity) are clearly defined on the video. It’s so good, in fact, that Patty’s lips were even able to be read by people who later examined the footage.

Each segment of this peculiar true-life drama unfolds in compelling detail during this polished documentary, which had me glued to the TV screen for its entire hour-and-a-half length. This is one of the finest true-crime documentary programs I’ve ever seen. It’s nicely edited and contains a very good background musical score (which effectively accompanies the video we’re watching on screen and is often quite eerie when combined with the on-screen images). A large amount of “as-it-was-happening” television news footage is what comprises the bulk of this documentary; along with interviews (circa 2001) of some former SLA members.

Of particular interest to this writer while viewing this film were the “Live” scenes of the police shootout in Los Angeles on May 17, 1974, which was a confrontation with SLA members in a residential area of L.A., resulting in the deaths of six SLA terrorists. For a brief time, it was thought that Miss Hearst was one of those victims.

This chilling shootout footage is somewhat nerve-racking to watch, for it seems surreal — like a scene straight out of a Hollywood action movie. It was one of the first events of its kind to be shown around the country on Live television — a real-life police vs. outlaw shoot-’em-up on Live TV, with hundreds of rounds of gunfire from automatic weapons being heard throughout the standoff. The scene then turned even more dramatic, as the house which was being used as a hideout by the SLA suddenly turned into a huge inferno of flames, killing all who were inside. Remarkable news footage indeed.

The Patty Hearst kidnapping story still continues to fascinate and intrigue even today. Was Patty “brainwashed” by her kidnappers and forced to participate in the Hibernia Bank heist? Or was she a willing participant? These questions still loom in some people’s minds even now, decades after the strange events that consumed Miss Hearst, and the nation, in 1974 and ‘75. In January of 2001, Patricia Hearst was issued a full “pardon” by President Bill Clinton (just prior to Clinton’s leaving office in favor of George W. Bush).

This DVD, distributed by “New Video Group, Inc.” under its first-rate “Docurama” label, comes complete with some noteworthy Special Bonus Features too. Let’s have a look at them……

>> Feature-Length Audio Commentary Track provided by the film’s director, Robert Stone.

>> Audio Exclusive: The Patty Hearst Tapes. …. This is an extremely interesting bonus, lasting a total of 53-plus minutes. Included are six audio clips, each of them “digitally re-mastered for increased clarity”, per the DVD’s written info.

All of the clips feature the voice of Patty Hearst throughout the early portions of 1974. These are extended, more-complete versions of the audio tapes that are heard throughout the 89-minute “Guerrilla” documentary. These clips provide a fascinating (audio) glimpse into history and into the mind of the kidnap victim herself. (Although, I suppose it’s up to each individual listening to the clips to decide whether or not these are the words of Patty’s OWN mind or, instead, the words of a woman whose mind has been somehow manipulated and brainwashed to speak the words her captors wanted expressed to the world. When listening to her comments on these tapes, it is, indeed, a tough call to make.)

A Parting Thought……..

Want to bone up on the almost-unbelievable story of Patricia Hearst (via heaps of 1970s-era news footage and all-new interviews)? If so, “Guerrilla: The Taking Of Patty Hearst” is the DVD to pick up.

As a teenager, I was rarely interested in the news or social events but I was riveted by the Patty Hearst kidnapping and faithfully tuned in to the evening news to see what had happened next. It seems odd that no one has made a serious documentary about the sensational events of that time until now. This is a riveting film that traces the development of the SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army), the kidnapping of Patty Hearst, and the group’s ultimate demise. The filmmakers make no attempt to analyze whether Hearst was a willing accomplise or victim of brainwashing but instead simply present the facts in chronological order. Interviews with former SLA members Russ Little (an original founder of the group), Mike Bortin and San Francisco Chronicle reporter Tim Findley highlight the film which also features footage from newscasts and the infamous Patty Hearst audio tapes. Extras on the dvd contain the full audio recordings of Patty Hearst as well as the Hibernia Bank robbery tapes and Sacremento Courtroom footage of the recent SLA members who were charged with the death of Myrna Opsahl, who was murdered during a bank robbery. Highly recommended!
