Hilarious version….Jack Nicholson was priceless. Received product promptly and in excellent shape. Makes me yearn for black and white movies again.
I am a fan of Little Shop and purchased this DVD as a period piece. Viewers looking for Nicholson to star or even “act” in this DVD version will be very disappointed. He plays a minor role and his acting is no better than others in the cast (which is pretty disappointing). Perhaps I have missed something, but this DVD is not worth the price of admission.

Okay, I started reading the Clique when I was 12 and that was 4 years ago. Now I’m 16 and the Clique girls are still 12 in the very first movie.

Remembering back to the very first book and watching this movie is surreal. The movie is almost nothing how I pictured the book in my mind, but they do a very nice, accurate portrayal of the book.
The movie follows the basic plot line, includes many of the characters, ha very interesting fashion, actually has the IMing and State of the Union parts, and quoted many of the funny lines from the book.
Although there were parts of the book that I missed (like the whole tights trend and the Massie insights), the most obvious jump from book to movie were the main characters. Alicia wasn’t busty enough, but the whole “rubbing boobs together” part took on a whole new meaning. Massie acted a little too forced sometimes. Kristen wasn’t sporty enough. However, this are minute details.
I definitely recommend this to all Clique fans because while it may be very different from what we saw in our minds, it still tells the timeless tale of fitting-in and insecurities with the “loveable” characters and their lines that we know!
I had very little hope for this when I sat down with my daughters to watch it. By the end of the movie it was clear that they all enjoyed it and so did I. One of my girls has read the books and said it was very close to it. Lets hope there are more of these.

Nothing sensational or terribly exciting happens in the lives of these ordinary, working class immigrants. Yet, there is extraordinary poignance in the way in which the family deals with everyday crises such as the fate of an injured pet cat or the dilemma of a mother who is not allowed to see her child in the hospital.
Acclaimed director George Stevens reconstructs such events with an honesty and delicacy that resonates long after the movie ends. And Stevens elicits superb performances from his cast led by Irene Dunne as the title character “Mama”. Dunne’s performance is beautifully restrained as the humble, selfless matriach who possesses an indomitable spirit and generous heart. The rest of the talented ensemble includes familiar and beloved actors such as Oscar Homolka, Barbara Bel Geddes aka Miss Ellie on the television series “Dallas”, and Ellen Corby of “The Waltons” fame.

“I Remember Mama” is the kind of movie that will evoke childhood memories and remind you to appreciate where you came from and how far you’ve arrived.
In retrospect George Steven’s production of “I Remember Mama” is the high water mark in 1940s family life melodrama. Set at the turn of the last century in San Francisco, the film stars the usually scatterbrained Irene Dunne; on this occasion as the tender yet determined matriarch, Martha Hanson. Together with her husband, Lars (Philip Dorn) and extended family (buttressed by a stellar cast including Barbara Bel Geddes, Cedric Hardwicke, Ellen Corby, Rudy Vallee, Edgar Bergan and Florence Bates) the Norwegian clan weathers some hard knocks and poignant moments with grace and charm. This is one of those elegant little `jabs of pleasure’ that American cinema used to dole out en masse during its golden age, but now seems rendered in exceedingly short supply. Based on John Van Druten’s hit play (derived from Kathryn Forbes’s autobiographical memoir), the film is a veritable feast for the heart and mind; a richly textured and moving experience - not to be missed.
Unfortunately more could have been done to clean up this print before rushing it out to DVD. Warner’s transfer is marred by a considerable amount of age related artifacts. Though the gray scale is nicely balanced at times, the image often tends to exhibit an overly soft quality that is more blurry than evocative of mood or style. There is also a considerable amount of film grain present in most scenes. Otherwise, black and contrast levels on the whole tend to be deep and nicely balanced. There are no digital anomalies. The audio is mono and suffers at times from a muffled characteristic. Background hiss is detected in quiescent scenes. A brief introduction by the director’s son, George Steven’s Jr. is all the extras you get. Bottom line; this film still gets my recommendation for a must have Christmas stocking stuffer. It may not be presented here in its optimal condition but regardless, is sure to warm the heart throughout the holidays and beyond.

The new “Dragon Tales” DVD focuses on stories about overcoming fear. Included is “Have No Fear” - a story about Ord’s fear of a butterfly/frog hybrid creatured called a “butterfrog” and “Try It You’ll Like It,” - a story in which our Dragon Tales friends try to help Zak overcome his fear of the attractions at the Dragon Land Amusement Park. Both are fairly well-written stories that have a good approach to the topic.
However, the main and most important reason why show fans should get those DVD right away is the presence of the story “Cowboy Max” on this DVD. This story is part an episode that was supposed to air during the final batch of five shown on PBS, but instead ended up airing only foreign markets for unknown reasons. The two stories in that episode: “Just the Two of Us” and the one on this DVD - “Cowboy Max,” featured some of the best writing and dialogue ever seen on the series.
Stories are presented full-screen and a play-all feature is included.
“Dragon Tales - Whenever I’m Afraid” features five stories centering around 6-year-old Emmy, her 4-year-old brother Max and their adventures in Dragonland with Ord, Cassie, Zak and Wheezie and Quetzal. The stories are imaginative and fun, and perfect for little ones who love indulging in creative and make-believe play. The stories in this collection focus on overcoming fear.

The five episodes here are “Have No Fear, “Make No Mistake,” Cowboy Max,” “I Believe In Me,” and “Try It, You’ll Like It.” There are short songs that link each episode. Final verdict; fun show for toddlers-preschoolers.

It goes without saying that if you haven’t seen the show from the beginning, this isn’t the place to start. Go back and watch this show from the beginning. I wrote a pretty in-depth review for the first disc if you’re interested.
If you’ve been collecting the show, there’s no reason not to get this disc. However, another version of this dvd exists that comes with a box to fit all 7 volumes. As a collector who likes his DVDs to look as good on the shelf as on the TV, I would strongly recommend the version with the box as opposed to the version without.
I noticed anime shows tend to be categorized within 4 categories: one’s that are so popular that even non-anime fans seem to know about it(Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Evangelion); ones that are popular but mainly in anime fan land(Elfen Lied, Vision of Escaflowne, Hellsing); ones that aren’t that popular but do have their fans (Tactics, Gungrave, Texhnolyze) while others are just simply awful and nobody should ever watch them (fill in whatever terrible show you can think of). Samurai 7 to me is a popular show but it’s maybe not as massive(or well-liked at times).

Here we are: the final battle. Ukyo has sent the Capital, a massive airship and hundreds of bandits against Kanna Village, leaving Kikuchiyo, Katsushiro, Kanbei, Kyuzo, Heihachi and Shichiroji as well as the village itself to fight and win. Not everybody will make it back home though.
Watching the ending to Samurai 7, I got the feeling that the show wasn’t a mistake to start watching, yet at the same you’re like “well, wasn’t as good as I thought it would.” The last volume that was really great was volume 4 which now remains my favorite after watching this one. Keep in mind this is the finale so everything is over-the top. Samurai take down huge Nobuseri with one swipe(or about 10) and jump to the next one so you kind of feel like “as if”. However it is great action and the CGI really comes into its own here.
It’s slight but where it falls flat is where it handles the characters. Throughout the entire show, the samurai never really got any development. Kanbei’s the grump, Kyuzo is the silent bad***, Kikuchiyo’s the big loud one and that’s it. The only one that really gets the slightest development is Katsushiro. Maybe it’s the character or maybe I’m a sucker for them but I quite liked Komachi, the high-pitched sister of Kirara.
Another disappoint was one particular character’s death. While the order might’ve changed, the same 4 I believe don’t survive the final battle and while 2 have pretty good deaths, one of them was so cheap and bad it was like “they killed them off that way? That’s so stupid!” It was incredibly disappointing, especially the way they handle the resolution of the character’s main focus throughout the whole series.
The series is definately worth a watch and maybe it’s just me but it probably won’t be held in high regard like other shows but maybe you’ll like it, who knows.

Thank god they released the original Turtles on DVD. The classic 80’s series is fantastic, I never get tired of it. I don’t mind at all about the lack of special features, just having the episodes released is fantastic, and I am so happy. Been waiting for years. Also we only had to wait 6 months between releases. I am looking forward to the rest of Season 3 to be released, can’t wait 
It’s so great that I can now finally watch the episodes as they were ment to be seen, unedited! When the series aired over here in Denmark, we sadlly enough had to put up with the teriblly edited versions of the episodes - the same version which were also shown in the UK!

Finally I can enjoy more unedited episodes from this great show, and I’m really greatful for that! The reason I’ve given this set 5 stars is for the episodes alone - they’re fantastic! I agree with some of the other reviewers though, it would be nice to have comercial bumpers included, and extras like the “turtle tips”, but hey - the episodes are beeing released, at that is what I’m buying these discs to enjoy most of all!
I do hope they’ll keep releasing these. Ad leased one more is coming, namely volume 4, which will be released on april 4th. of cource I’ll buy that one too, and I’d recommend everyone else to do the same thing, so that the intire series ad leased will make it to dvd at some point!

American Gothic is a slice of 80’s slasher cheese that throws all horror clichés into a pot of boiling stew and offers no explanation for the absurdities shown on screen. Such as why would someone let a couple of lunatics push them on a swing at the edge of a rocky cliff? Why would a deeply religious god worshipper all of a sudden pledge to Satan when things are not going his way? After firing a gun at a maniac pursuing her, why would a woman drop the gun to the floor and not bother picking it up before running away? In the midst of watching this flick, it didn’t take me long to come to the realization that the filmmakers were simply throwing in every cliché in the book in order to make somewhat of a horror/comedy hybrid, instead of a straight slasher film.
3 Seattle couples board a private plane en route to Jackson Island, a resort in the pacific northwest intended for rich yuppie types. During the trip, the plane’s engine sputters and the pilot is forced to land on another island short of their destination. The island appears to be deserted at first, but upon further exploration, the travelers stumble upon an old cabin in the middle of the woods. The inhabitants of the cabin turn out to be an old, deeply religious couple that go by the name of “Ma” and “Pa”. Also inhabiting their house are their three deranged children, all of them who appear to be at least in their forties but who don’t act a year older than 10. Ma and Pa appear at first very kind, inviting the travelers for dinner and to stay the night. The travelers soon find out that there is a great price for this hospitality however, as Ma and Pa’s “children” turn out to have an insatiable appetite for murder.
American Gothic doesn’t waste any time getting started, as the travelers land on the island only about ten minutes into the movie. Once the first murder occurs, the pace flies by as some of the travelers get dispatched with ridiculous ease. From then on the movie turns into a revenge flick as the sole survivor turns the table on the murderous inbred family. Most of the murders sadly happen off screen and there is not much in the matter of grue (which is not unusual with 80’s slasher fare). Yes, there is a small amount of blood but we only get to see it after the murder, once the victim is lying dead on the ground. One of the most obvious flaws in the movie is that we’re never sure when Cynthia, one of the travelers recently released from a psych ward, is sane or not. Most scenes with her in it left me wondering whether she had become totally insane and joined the ranks of Ma and Pa’s family or if she was simply playing along so she could escape. It would be nice to know but instead the viewer is left guessing.
I found American Gothic effectively chilling but not for the obvious reasons. There are no jumps or surprises or traditional horror movie scares. The spookiest part is watching so many characters fall into utter depths of insanity. The idea of parents raising their children on a deserted island their entire lives and never letting them leave in fear that they may be “contaminated by the outside world”, all in the name of religious blasphemy, is something I found to be quite chilling. The acting was also surprisingly effective, especially the over-the-top performance of “Pa”, played by Rod Steiger and by Fannie of the 3 “children”. I don’t imagine it’s easy playing a 40-something with the mentality of a murderous 10 year old and trying to keep a straight face through it all. American Gothic is a decent film for those looking for a stylistic 80’s slasher with great scenery and a barrel of laughs both intentional and unintentional.
This dark satire of the Religious Right in rural America demonstrates how dogmatism can erase the thin line that separates sanity from insanity.

Recovering from an emotional breakdown brought on by the bathtub drowning of her child, Cynthia (Sarah Torgov) goes on a camping trip with her husband and two other couples. Mechanical problems strand the campers on island near Seattle, where the troupe eventually runs up against Ma & Pa (Yvonne De Carlo & Rod Steiger), the demented backwoodsy parents of three murderous but mentally infantile adults.
There are some Gein-like goodies, including implied necrophelia, as the homicidal hillbillies pick off the campers one by one, but the film really focuses more on Cynthia’s descent into madness in the face of it all. Lots of subtle humor, not the least of which is the double-entendres in the names of Ma & Pa’s progeny, make AMERICAN GOTHIC a fun way to waste a few hours. And over-the-top performances strengthen the entertainment value, especially those of Steiger, De Carlo, and Michael J. Pollard (who portrays Teddy, one of the psycho sons). Targov is also wonderfully whacko when her character, Cynthia, finally loses all ties with reality.

The DVD from Trinity Home Entertainment offers the film in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The transfer looks a bit grainy at times but is definitely watchable. Alas, the disc contains no bonus features, yet it’s still worth the very reasonable price of admission.

Although I think the movie is an over-loud, completely illogical and fairly disorienting piece of Hollywood claptrap, as far as big Summer blockbusters go it’s hard to beat Armageddon. But I wanted to add a large, hairy and potentially sales-limiting aside to all the other reviews. If you’re upgrading to a widescreen TV thinking this DVD will showcase the new technological wonders of prograssive scan and 16×9 flat screens you’ll be sorely disappointed when you find that there is no anamorphic version on this disc. That’s right, friends, even with all the other extras, they couldn’t be bothered to include the one feature that truly showcases the cinematography and special effects (which are, let’s face it, this film’s halmarks cuz it sure ain’t the acting and script). On a widescreen TV, Criterion’s Armageddon provides black bars above, below and side to side yielding a postcard view of the “big screen” action.
The Criterion Collection release of Armageddon is a treat. It offers 2 commentary tracks, one featuring the director Michael Bay, actors Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has comments on several interesting things. Affleck’s commentary is sometimes very funny. The other commentary track features the Director of Photography and special effects people.
The commentary includes interesting details, including background information on the characters and filming locations. Note: The commentary is raw and sometimes laced with profanity, although the movie itself is rated PG-13, for reasons explained in the commentary.
Although it’s not much, this collection is also a Director’s Cut and has a couple scenes added, notable of which is Harry Stamper’s character visiting his father before launch. Some other scenes are cut slightly differently, adding some depth to the story.
The Gag reel on the second disk is extremely funny, raw, and not your typical “behind-the-scenes” documentary.
The second disk also features a tremendous amount of information on the special effects and includes many different trailers and promo material. The Aerosmith song video is also included.
While the story can be nit-picked, it’s still very exciting and enjoyable.
Overall, if you liked the movie, the Criterion Collection release is the DVD to have.

Subtitled, “A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse”, this 1991 film is a documentary about the making of “Apocalypse Now”, the 1979 film based on Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”. Set in Vietnam, it is the story of a captain, Martin Sheen, and his crew’s mission to find and kill an insane colonel, Marlon Brando, who had created his own kingdom deep in the Jungle. On the way, everyone is touched with the evil around them. This summer I saw the re-edited version of the film and have been intrigued by it ever since. When I heard about this “Hearts of Darkness” I just HAD to see it.
The filming of Apocalypse Now was supposed to take just sixteen weeks at a budget of $13 million. It wound up costing more than $30 million, much of it put up by Francis Coppola himself, and took almost three years to get to the public. Coppola’ wife Eleanor and their three children went along on location in the Philippines. She was interested in making a documentary and shot a lot of behind-the-scenes footage, even secretly recording private conversations she had with her husband about the film. The authenticity of the experience really comes through, as everyone involved with the production seemed to go a little bit insane.
Coppola had serious doubts throughout and we hear his words of despair as he thinks he’s making a bad movie. We see the terrible typhoon that destroyed all the sets and realized that the helicopters that were being used for the shooting were actually property of the Philippine government who kept calling them away to fight a real disturbance that was going on just ten miles away. We see shots and scenes that never made it into the original film (although much of it eventually made it into the 2001 “Redux” version). We see and overweight Marlon Brando who insisted on being filmed in shadows. And we are right there to watch the filming of the scene in which Martin Sheehan has a mental breakdown. In order to do this he became bleary-eyed drunk, cut his thumb on a mirror and used the blood as part of the scene. The intensity is chilling and when, a short time afterward, he has a life-threatening heart attack at the age of 36, we’re all there to see him as he is given first aid.
Now, years later, some of the actors are interviewed about their experiences. We learn that they did a lot of drugs during many of the scenes - acid, speed, marijuana, alcohol, which certainly added to the authenticity as well as the craziness of the whole production. Robert Duval talks about how his famous line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning was improvised. And the whole cast talks about how they improvised a massacre scene. Laurence Fishburne was only 14 when the film was made, a real coming-of-age experience for him. But this very stirring film portrait belongs to Francis Coppola. We get to meet him as a very imperfect human being doing his best to create an art form out of the script, changing it constantly as he went along, and eventually turning out a small masterpiece which went on to be nominated for eight academy awards.
I give this video my highest recommendation. It is a “must” for movie buffs. And an essential education for anyone involved in filmmaking itself. Don’t miss it!
Shot by Francis Ford Coppolla’s wife, Hearts of Darkness is an incredible, one hour fifty minute documentary that reveals the horrors of making the very popular Apocalypse Now. The film took forever to make, driving many of its participants to the brink of insanity, not just Coppolla, who was emotionally-unstable for much of the film. Viewers of this fascinating documentary will be amazed to learn that Harvey Keitel was originally cast as Willard, but was dropped after only two weeks of shooting. Though only 36 years-old, Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack during filming, an event that further postponed its debuts in theaters. There is some really great footage included here, especially the shooting of the opening sequence of the film which involves a very drunk Sheen lashing out as both his character and himself (at that point, Sheen was experiencing a lot of hostility towards Coppolla and had it out with him right then and there, an episode that would appear in the finished movie). Even if you didn’t particularly care for Apocalypse Now, you will most likely find Hearts of Darkness interesting, nonetheless. It is a magnificent look at the troubles and triumphs of a film crew headed by a somewhat mad, but brilliant director. This shouldn’t be missed.
