An ex-con engineers a race track heist in “The Killing,” a taut and suspenseful film noir from director Stanley Kubrick. Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) is fresh out of Alcatraz after five years, and immediately goes to work on a job he figures to be worth upwards of two million dollars. He puts together a gang who are not real criminals, just “Some guys with problems and a little larceny in them.” Marvin (Jay C. Flippen) is good for some front money Johnny needs; George (Elisha Cook Jr.) is a cashier at the track, and Mike (Joe Sawyer) is a bartender there; Randy (Ted de Corsia) is a cop with loan shark payment problems. Clay’s got it all figured out, a precision plan that can’t go wrong as long as everyone does his part and keeps quiet about it, before and after. But George has a wife, Sherry (Marie Windsor), who wants nice things, and he can’t resist the temptation to let her know it’s all going to get better real soon. Trouble is, Sherry has a boyfriend, Val (Vince Edwards), who has more than a little larceny in him, as well. As it is with all “perfect” plans, there are, after all, imperfections. The presentation of this film is not one of them, however; Kubrick keeps the tension high throughout, working with a tight narrative and an out of sequence chronology through which he dispenses bits of information, building the suspense, until it all fits together in the end like pieces of a giant puzzle (Much the same as Tarantino would do with “Pulp Fiction” many years later). The stoic delivery, coupled with the stark black and white photography of the film, creates an almost surreal, fatalistic ambience that works so well with this material; especially at the end, for it underscores the climax and heightens the drama of the final moment, all of which makes for a truly unforgettable scene. The supporting cast includes Coleen Gray (Fay), Kola Awariani (Maurice), Joe Turkel (Tiny), and Timothy Carey, who makes his detached and indifferent hit man, Nikki Arane, one of the most memorable characters in the film. It must be noted, however, that Elisha Cook Jr. gives what may have been his best performance ever, here. His scene, after it all goes bad for him and he stumbles into his apartment, bullet holes in his face and wide-eyed with acceptance, to confront Sherry, is so cool and underplayed that it becomes one of the lasting impressions of the movie. Kubrick wrote the screenplay (with some help from Jim Thompson with the dialogue), adapted from the novel “Clean Break” by Lionel White. “The Killing” is one of Kubrick’s earliest and best films; and it’s not just for Kubrick fans or for those who love the “noir” genre. This is an excellent piece of work that will definitely be appreciated by anyone who likes good movies.

The movie: THE KILLING (1956) by Stanley Kubrick, was the film which brought the twenty-eight year old director to Hollywood’s attention. Based on the 1955 crime novel CLEAN BREAK by Lionel White (and re-named THE KILLING for its 1988 redistribution), director Kubrick incorporated the author’s use of the staggered time interval (which began in chapter eight) within this well balanced and tightly paced story of seven disparate characters brought together to orchestrate a logically planned two million dollar robbery of a race track in broad daylight.
A brilliant effort of film making by Stanley Kubrick as he demonstrated an impeccable choice in cast selection, choosing established ‘B’ movie actors such as: Elisha Cook, Jr. as George Peatty and Jay C. Flippen as Marvin Unger (both actors had appeared in “The Three Stooges” skits more than once); then Sterling Hayden as the main character, Johnny Clay: though one of the beauties of this film is that all of the actors had such memorable performances. The limited acting abilities of these stars only added to the subtle gritty reality of their lumpenprolitariat roles which carried this film as much as any special effect.
While Stanley Kubrick wrote the screenplay and maintained a number of elements from the book, he eliminated Lionel White’s character of Maurice Cohen and had Johnny Clay assume those duties; and also replaced the boxer, Tex, with the burly (and hairy) wrestler Maurice Oboukhof for the spectacular bar room fight diversion. In the book, Marvin Unger deeply despised Johnny Clay; but in the movie, Unger demonstrated a fatherly pride and deep paternal admiration for Johnny Clay - the movie is noted for its admirable male commeraderie!
But how much more was Stanley Kubrick influenced for this movie outside of the Lionel White novel was suggested during the actual stick-up scene performed by Sterling Hayden’s character, Johnny Clay. In the book, Johnny tied a loose handkerchief around his face as a disguise, but this was changed in the movie to a full rubber clown mask - almost an exact duplicate of the masks published in police photographs used by the bandits in the 1950s Brinks robbery in Boston; a robbery that was then nationally advertised as “The Crime of the Century”! The similarities continued as the Brinks building was robbed of two million dollars by seven armed men in rubber masks and got clean away. This is too strong a resemblance to be ignored, and the well-read Stanley Kubrick may have also been influenced by this event, coupled with the novel CLEAN BREAK, to produce his advanced and visionary robbery debut film.
Still, the movie: THE KILLING by Stanley Kubrick, is a brilliant and typically Kubrickian ahead-of-its-time work of art which is a *must* watching experience in black & white for all its lasting and provocative scenes.

This does not look very “high def” and certainly not filmed at 1080p. Also, with all that room on a B-ray disc, you think they could make the segments longer than a few minutes; what happened, did the fishy’s union demand overtime or something? It’s not like there is huge overhead filming a tank of fish with a stationary camera. Waste of money.

We bought this thinking it was filmed in high-dev, it’s NOT. They tried to upscale it somehow, but if you’ve seen anything filmed in true high-dev, you will be disappointed. We thought it would be a reef or filmed in the ocean, but it’s just various tanks. It’s very unimaginative, we could have gone to a local aquarium supply store and shot a video of a tank!

Wait for a true high-dev aquarium product, this one is not worth it and now we are stuck keeping it since we opened the package and tried it.

This is one of the most astonishing films I have seen: probing, complex, lyrical, and at times emotionally overwhelming. NOTE: Do not blame WaterBearer for the poor-quality DVD; the Pasolini Foundation, which controls the film, provided the print and also vetoed chapters to encourage viewers to watch it only in its entirety. The overly edge-enhanced image is improved by turning your TV’s sharpness setting to its ‘blurriest.’

Can you imagine a less likely candidate to make what, after 40 years, may still be the greatest and most moving film about Jesus Christ? Pasolini was not only a gay Marxist but a devout atheist. His fascination with Jesus may have connected with his most personal theme, that of the outsider (with his artistic, political and sexual nature, he saw himself as the consummate outsider). Although one of Italy’s leading intellectuals, he also moved among the laborers, indigents, and hustlers (some of whom were his lovers, not to mention the inspiration for his early poetry and novels), whose counterparts two millennia earlier had walked with Jesus.

Jesus’s story also let Pasolini explore the complexities of real-world politics even while recreating an ancient culture with astonishing immediacy. He also relished the opportunity to play with a vast, and eclectic, artistic tradition, from Jean-Luc Godard’s striking documentary style in “the two trials of Christ…. to painting… Piero della Francesca (in the Pharisees’ clothes), Byzantine art, Christ’s face like a Rouault, etc.”

We also see El Greco not only in some compositions but in the intriguing casting of Enrique Irazoqui, a Catalan economics student, as Jesus. Pasolini had also considered such young, subversive literary lions as Jack Kerouac and Yevgeny Yevtushenko. With Pasolini’s encyclopedic knowledge of all the arts, you could go on indefinitely trying to unravel the cultural allusions which make up just one strand of the film’s rich texture.

The result, as they say, is history. It is like no biblical picture seen before; a quantum leap beyond the artificiality of, say, King of Kings, both De Milles’s silent version and Nicholas Ray’s 1961 remake, and later pictures like Scorsese’s Last Temptation of Christ are inconceivable without Pasolini’s model.

Pasolini had the uncanny gift for using the simplest, most economical means to bring his vision to life. Some of the locations are breathtaking, from an enormous city which seems to grow out of a mountainside to the surreal wasteland where Satan tempts Jesus (filmed on Mount Etna). By imaginatively selecting these locales - and not having to build sets - Pasolini powerfully recreated the feel of the ancient Middle East at a tiny fraction of the cost of a Hollywood production.

He also took enormous pains to cast exactly the right faces. Radically, he chose real farmers and workers to enact their historical counterparts (instead of John Wayne playing a Roman centurion as in The Greatest Story Ever Told). Perhaps the film’s most intriguing aspect is that all the characters seem drained of an inner emotional life (which elsewhere Pasolini explores rigorously). This is sacred material presented in the style of legend. This visual and performance approach matches Matthew’s prose to perfection. But there could also be more provocative reasons for it.

Take the Sermon on the Mount montage, consisting entirely of close-ups of Jesus preaching with immense force - the background reflecting each changing verse. (The footage came from the abandoned sacred-style approach; Pasolini ingeniously integrated it by using sharp editorial rhythms.) Here as throughout the film, Pasolini’s Jesus is both earthly and otherworldly, harsh and tender. And although his inner life remains completely opaque, he emerges - perhaps in part because he has been ‘de-psychologized’ - as a figure of power but also complexity and ambiguity. Pasolini was forever picking apart the discrepancies not only in society - including religion and politics (as seen in Accattone and Hawks and the Sparrows) - but in himself. Here we see the “tough” Jesus, who “comes not to bring peace,” smites a fig tree, violently hurls moneychangers out of the Temple, and warns people that they are either “with me or against me.” But we also see the Jesus of love and compassion, who heals the sick, treats children with affection, and performs miracles (most are breathtaking, reproduced with the simplest means, as when he walks on water).

The only aspect of this magnificent film which does not work for me is the self-consciously eclectic (and Oscar-nominated!) use of music, which extends from Bach to Prokofiev to folk music. Pasolini wants this polyglot score to create subtle, and shifting, tensions between the world of ancient Judea and our own, but its incongruity and repetitiveness are sometimes distracting. By contrast, the use of silence is stunning. He communicates so much in the wordless opening scene between the pregnant Mary and her baffled husband, just by their faces and postures. These are people truly, yet to them confusingly, touched by the divine. He also captures the tactile reality of their world (you can feel the stones), even as his simple but striking compositions connect his own vision with such Renaissance masters as Giotto. This is filmmaking at its most subtle, resonant, and - while acknowledging the long tradition of Christian motifs in art - original. Pasolini brings together history, art and his own probing genius to depict Jesus in all of his humanity and divinity.

A budget release of Pasolini’s _Gospel According to St. Matthew_ would seem too good to be true. Alas, this particular DVD proves neither good nor true.

The only soundtrack here is the English-dubbed version. The original Italian-language soundtrack is not available, and the sound mix is seriously compromised whenever the dubbing is inserted. Ironically, this budget version boasts a slightly better transfer than the thirty-dollar deluxe edition. But even so, the picture is barely watchable, and even shows a few lines here and there that make the film look as if it had been copied off an old VCR.

Despite the fact that this DVD is seven minutes shorter than the film’s official running time, it doesn’t seem to lack any footage. But the film does run at a faster speed than it ought, which throws the editing off kilter and makes the dubbing feel a little rushed. There are no extras, of course.

Herbert West is a man on the cutting edge of science. He’s revolutionized thought as he’s walked that fine line between experimentation and “morality,” bringing the dead back from the grave and all the while proving that demise is merely a disease and not a functional piece of punctuation added to the end of the living equation. He’s taken that a step further, too, proving that life exists in every portion of the whole and that each specimen he collects can be introduced to his re-agent and returned from the grave. A combination of eyes and a few fingers, an organ stew with limbs; he’s been there and he’s done that with a type of “morbid doodling” that has been interesting to watch. And now, 13 years after he was imprisoned for his achievements, he’s found the very thing that tells the cells of the body to grow.

While its not reflected here, this movie actually premiered on the Sci-Fi network months before it was released on VHS or on DVD, and many of these reviews are for it. I know that because I watched it myself, seeing the things that were cut out and left incomplete before checking this page for the DVD release date. When I did I also noticed the lack of gore in some places because it had been cut for television, the lack of a certain part of the male anatomy fighting a rat at the end because it could be considered tasteless, and I also noticed waves in the story. So, those were pitches for an incomplete viewing. Still, the negative reviews do have a point and that is that you might not enjoy this if you don’t have the right mindset.

In order to actually enjoy yourself and what this brings to the table, you have to be able to do a few things, and one of those things is to tell yourself that this is the story of Herbert West. While many can’t accept this fact, the first in the series has been done, is long gone, and its never going to be done again. Everything after-the-fact is going to seem like a sequel and you aren’t going to find a carbon copy of the original. You also aren’t going to get the same actors (save the most wondrous one, Jeffrey Combs, who is crucial to this series) and you are going to have some problems due to budget restraints. Still, if you liked the series itself, you should be happy if you’ve followed the story this far because the third chapter fits in rather well.

While the plot of the movie is a little sketchy if you catch bits and pieces of it and drifts a tad when you get toward the end, its actually not that bad of a theory when you get down to it. As Dr. West points out, the human body loses three to four grams of weight when it dies. According to him, this NPE, or Nano Plasmic Energy, is the very building block of what makes life “alive.” It tells the cells to grow, making the byproduct who and what it is because it could very well be the component many dub a soul. Accordingly, NPE can overcome many of the problems Dr. West has had in the past with the reanimated monstrosities he’s created, allowing him to endow true life to the things he’s returning to this side of living. It works better than the Thorazine he’s been using to sedate them, after all, or the straight jackets he’s used to keep them in check. The only thing is that he gets excited and, as everyone knows, nothing works exactly as the scientist pictures it because this always has been an on-going process

As far the other portions of the movie goes, it goes from “not that bad” to “impressive, considering the budget.”
As far as the gore, there are some good examples of prosthetic effects - considering the amount of gore has been stepped down. You have some blood that rushes out really well, some bodies stripping themselves down to base elements, and you have other “portions” popping up. You do have some cheaper CGI sometimes taking up residence, too, but those aren’t really a bother because this is somewhat of a comedy founded in the science of slapstick horror. Besides, a male portion of the anatomy fighting off a rat at the end is pretty funny stuff.
As far as acting goes, you get what you expect. You have some people that are bad, the great Jeffrey Combs that is always on because he is Herbert West to everyone following the series, and you have some people in the middle. Still, your setting, a jailhouse, allows some of that to be overlooked because you aren’t exactly expecting a drove of great people in that place.
And, as far as the little Lovecraft joke in the name Howard Phillips, I got a laugh.
Also, watching the commentary “special feature”, I noticed that IT’S A CUT MOVIE. With some scenes missing that you are shown in the director’s commentary, you know it was cut before having an American release That’s always sad, too, and it also shows what a translation to English will often get you - despite the R rating.

If you want to gage whether or not you might like it, you should simply ask yourself what you thought of the last two as a whole and then go from there. You should also ask yourself what you want to see in the movie, what its all about, and if you’re going to see the undead or something more try to take place. As I said before, it is the story of Herbert West thirteen years after he’s gone to jail, his partner now turned state’s evidence, so things are going to be different. Still, Jeffrey Combs is Jeffrey Combs and that, at the end of the day, that sells itself to me.

This Halloween my boyfriend and I rented something seasonal — *Beyond Reanimator. We didn’t get around to watching it right away; Blockbuster’s newly lax late-regulations make our procrastination all the cheaper. And besides, what was the rush? How good could it possibly be?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beyond Re-Animator! Click Here

Well, let’s look at that small 4-letter word “good” for a minute, shall we? Traditionally-speaking, “good” tends to indicate something of quality, something of value — or at least something of marginal usefulness. By this criteria, Beyond Reanimator hasn’t really got much to offer. We were quite safe in assuming that it could gather dust on top of our DVD player for a week or two and we wouldn’t be missing much.

However. If you were to redefine “good” to include such things as, “features a kung-fu fight scene between a prison rat and a dismembered zombie erection,” well then. Now you’re talking. Never fear, because Beyond Reanimator has all your zombie genitalia needs covered.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beyond Re-Animator! Click Here

The “Reanimator” line is taken from H.P. Lovecraft’s canon and centers around a mad scientist named Herbert West. Herbert sees death as a terminal illness, and in his own methodical, clinically-insane fashion, he seeks to cure it. He succeeds in restoring life to his unfortunate subjects, but he has a somewhat tougher time restoring them to rational behavior. Voila. Flesh-eating zombies, running amuck. In this third installment of the movie franchise, the flesh-eating, amuck-running zombies are largely confined to the prison where once again Dr. West is indulging his unholy experiments.

In addition to satisfying any mobile phallic curiosity you may harbor, Beyond Reanimator also fulfills your Recommended Daily Allowance™ of slutty nurses with visible granny panty-lines, orange-foam vomit, needles-the-size-of-railroad-spikes loaded with glowing green goo, the odd heaving nipple being bitten off, and nerdy mad scientists in jumpsuits.

Thank heavens this movie knows better than to take itself seriously. If you get hold of this DVD, be sure to watch the credits for a bonus shadow-puppet theater of prison rat karate taking on the free-range [organs]. Also, check the extras for the music video which (ostensibly) accompanies the film. Seriously. Watch it. I had to avert my eyes right about the time my boyfriend cried out, “GAY FRENCH ZOMBIE MIMES! HAHAHAHAHAAH!”

Anyway, It’s outrageously stupid, but kind-of fun. Don’t expect too much of it and you won’t be let down.

Web of Shadows was not terrible, it was certainly better than the first and maybe moreso than the second, but it is soooo obvious that these are just one BIG commercial.

Overall, the plot line is a bit stale and hard to get caught up into. There are several sequences, such as “Keetongu” (or however it is spelled) or the transformation of the toa that will have anyone that is not a die hard fan rolling their eyes. Roodaka, the queen, was a refreshing new twist on the scenario and gave us something interesting, however, the relationships of the toa still seemed rather forced, which is somewhat surprising at this point.

Fans of the “bionicle” series will rejoice at yet another installment of their favorite series, but there isn’t much here for anyone else. If you don’t know much about the plot, watch this with someone who knows all the names, locations, and references made, because you won’t understand a word of this story otherwise.

The Bionicle movies just keep getting better with every release!

Web of Shadows features the best CGI thus far in the series along with the greatest action sequences to date. The voice acting is again top level and the storyline logicaly fits between “Mask” and “Ledgends”. This is a must buy for any fans or owners of the first two DVDs.

If, like me, you find most Hollywood “love” stories about as warm and romantic as a cold sleepless night in Seattle, then you’re in for a surprise. Not since Casablanca have I enjoyed a love story as much, and though they both end at the airport, the similarity ends there. This one is about marriage, family, and the connections and sacrifices that make marriage, parenthood and yes, love, worthwhile.

Nicolas Cage plays a harried but driven Wall Street executive playboy who wakes one day to find himself trapped in a life he never wanted, married to the woman he abandoned years ago. It’s a living nightmare at first, but the harder he tries to escape it, the more he begins to see that there are values and rewards that he somehow missed in his previous executive penthouse lifestyle. By the end of the movie, he’s learned a lesson he will never forget.

An unexplainable fantasy in the tradition of “Groundhog Day”, you soon find yourself accepting the unexplainable, even as the protagonist himself realizes there is no easy escape from his new reality, and learns to work within it’s framework. After all, life throws all of us some unexpected “curves”, and like the protagonist in this modern day Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Suburban Bowling League, we can become better people by accepting and embracing the crazy things life puts us through in the name of love. Chalk one up for old-fashioned family values in a feel-good movie with a message, served up without the sappy cliches.

Put the kids to bed early (The Family Man deals with some adult issues, and much as I enjoyed it, it would need a little editing before I would consider it a family film!), and just the two of you watch this one together with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine - you’ll be glad you did!

In the tradition of the best films that Hollywood ever had to offer comes this refreshingly honest movie that isn’t afraid to say that you don’t have to be rich, hip and cynical to be successful and happy with your life. “The Family Man,” directed by Brett Ratner, stars Nicolas Cage as Jack Campbell, a man who took the “road less traveled,” and turned his back on love for a career on Wall Street, and thirteen years later still doesn’t realize how empty and shallow his life has become. Then something happens; on Christmas Eve, Jack does a good turn to the right person at the right time. His name is Cash (Don Cheadle), and he just happens to be a guy with, well, connections. And the next thing Jack knows, he’s getting a “glimpse” of what his life would have been had he made a different choice all those many years ago. When he wakes up on Christmas morning, he’s not in his bed in his penthouse apartment, but in a house in the suburbs, sleeping next to Kate Reynolds (Tea Leoni), the woman he once loved, but abandoned. Wall Street is history; he’s now a crackerjack tire salesman at “Big Ed’s,” and he and Kate have two kids, Annie (Makenzie Vega) and Josh (Jake and Ryan Milkovich).

Needless to say, Jack is confused; and the enigmatic Cash isn’t about to let him in on what’s going on– that’s for Jack to figure out on his own. So Jack has no choice but to go on living his life– even if it’s not really “his” life. And it becomes a journey of discovery; not only for Jack, but for the audience, as well. And what follows may be fantasy, but it’s fantasy with a message, from some filmmakers who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is, and they do it well.

What director Roth presents you with is an examination of what life is really all about, and what– in the final analysis– is really important. And make no mistake, this isn’t a film that aims for the head, it aims for the heart, scores a bullseye and doesn’t apologize for it. Is it pure, true, realistic, riveting drama? Of course not, and it never pretends to be. What it is, is a film that stays true to what it’s all about and says some things that need to be said in this fast-food, cybersaturated world of the here and now. It’s a poignant, well made and well acted film that appeals to the universal sensibilities that in one way or another reside within even the most jaded, modernized and “New Aged” individuals. Because it’s an entreaty to the most basic of human needs and concerns.

Cage was the perfect choice to play Jack; he’s got a natural, sympathetic look that makes him easy to like, and combined with the emotional aspect he brings to the character it makes Jack someone to whom it is so easy to relate. it’s a performance that allows you to feel something; and that’s really what this movie is all about, capturing that sense of humanity that is so often lacking in people’s lives today. Cage makes it work, and he makes it work beautifully, because he lets you share Jack’s frustration, his loss, his fears and, most importantly, the hope and the love he ultimately realizes has been missing in his life. It’s a challenging role that Cage not only met, but surpassed with just the kind of exacting performance that was needed to put this story across.

Tea Leoni gives an excellent performance, as well, as Kate. It’s a sensitive, sympathetic portrayal that serves the character and the story with great effectiveness. Leoni makes something special out of a character that could’ve been just the “female lead,” with the purpose of being nothing more than the means of moving the story of Jack’s self-discovery along. Instead, she makes it her story as much as his by making Kate an endearing, truly integral part of the film, and she fairly sparkles on the screen.

The supporting cast includes Jeremy Piven (Arnie), Saul Rubinek (Alan), Josef Sommer (Peter), Lisa Thornhill (Evelyn), Harve Presnell (Big Ed), Mary Beth Hurt (Adelle) and Francine York (Lorraine). There’s no doubt that personal experience and frame of reference is going to play a big part in the way “The Family Man” is received by the audience. But Ratner, Cage, Leoni and everyone else connected with this project are to be commended for making an honest, heart-felt film with an important message about life in today’s world. It’s a film that says success isn’t just being the guy at the top of the heap, that it’s okay to just “be” whomever or whatever you are, as long as it’s what makes you happy and content. It’s a bold statement for a filmmaker to make today, and we can only hope that more artists will have the guts to make more movies like this in the future.

“impossible mission” movie subgenre. Flicks of this type have plots in which a certain number of men, ususally hard cases, are picked for a do or die mission in which there is a high degree of failure. Other notable films of this sort are The Guns of Navarone, The Dirty Dozen and Where Eagles Dare.

Gregory Peck stars as Captain Richard Lance who is a commander of United States Cavalry stationed in the Wild West. Captain Lance needs to send an Apache Chief Tuscos (Michael Ansara), who harbors violent hatred of Americans, to a prison at another fort. Captain Lance sends Lieutenant William Holloway (Gig Young) to escort the chief.

However, Indians attack the escort freeing the chief and killing

Lieutenant Holloway. The chief then goes on to lead an Indian uprising against the Americans. Captain Lance is held responsible for the debacle by both his men and his girlfriend, Cathy Eversham (Barbara Payton). This is especially serious since Holloway was widely beloved.

With the uprising, the fort that Captain Lance’s troops are stationed at is vulnerable to attack. If the fort falls before reinforcements can arrive, then the territory and its settlers will be wide open to Indian attack. Captain Lance decides that the best course of action is to take a personally selected task force to a nearby fort that occupies a mountain pass that is a superior strategic position that was abandoned some time earlier. If that fort can hold out long enough for reinforcements to arrive, then the territory will be spared from

Indian incursions.

For this mission, Captain Lance decides that the only soldiers whose lives should be risked are the hard cases. These are the dregs of the army whose devotion to the cause is rather suspect. They include cowards, criminals, deserters and just plain malcontents. Among others, they are Corporal Timothy Gilchrist (Ward Bond), Trooper Kebussyan (Lon Chaney, Jr.) and Sergeant Ben Murdock (Neville Brand). The selected troopers, in turn, suspect that this is precisely why they have been chosen and they resent Captain Lance all the more for it.

Needless to say, Captain Lance’s work is cut out for him. He must meld men who have severe character flaws together into a cohesive unit. He must work in a confine of responsibility and honor that is every bit as narrow and have the potential for being dangerously conflicting as the pass that the bloodthirsty Apaches have to move through to attack the fort.

Only the Valiant is a flick that could easily have been just another Western but in the hands of veteran director Gordon Douglas, it is a masterpiece of suspense. Douglas was one director who really understood just how to build suspense. This movie is atmospheric and intense and tells a story worth telling. It is filmed in stark black and white that only adds to the suspense. Douglas aimed to make a character driven Western and in that he succeeded admirably.

Very good western with strong cast. Gregory Peck does an excellent job as a captain in the cavalry wrongly blamed for the death of a popular officer at the hands of the Apaches. Film has much in the way of drama and suspense.

I can tell you I was quite skeptical when I saw this….but I was wrong! Each one of these comic discs has a dramtic reading in the style of a small film with comic panels. I was surprised at how good the acting was and would tell any fan of comics to grab these while they last. I don’t understand why more comics fans didn’t buy these? They are quite good and I don’t see why Marvel wouldn’t want to make more of them.

As a fan of the Hulk I have to say the producers did do a good job of translating this into the format.

I stopped reading comics in the mid 90’s. The influx of Superhero Movies (Spiderman, X-Men, Blade & Hulk) totally got me back into the Marvel world. I purchased all the DVDS that Sock Puppet studio produced and I loved them. For basically the same price as a Graphic Novel you get a DVD with over 2 hours of material. I think the format might not be for everbody but for somebody who has been away from Comics this should pull you back quickly. I have been waiting for them to release other titles soon.

Vandread isn’t really all that new, in fact, having made its Japanese broadcast debut way back in 2000, one might go as far as to say it’s pretty darn old. But like most Gonzo titles, it’s survived the test of time over and over again. Funimation’s recent box set release of the property represents the third time the DVDs have been released to the North American market; first through Pioneer, then repackaged and re-released from Geneon. Suffice it to say, tales with this kind of staying power rarely reach this status undeservingly.

Funimation’s release consists of all 26 episodes, which were in fact two seasons (Vandread & Vandred The Second Stage), across four discs. Housed in an attractive cardboard slipcase, the four discs come in a pair of artistic thin packs. Total runtime comes in at 600 minutes even and the show wears a very conservative 13 & Up rating. Conservative because the show really is friendly to viewers of all ages save for a few sexual innuendos and extremely-light cussing. There is no nudity to speak of and while death is presented on occasion, it is never graphic or overly violent.

The set presents the usual dub & sub dialog options; An English dub, original Japanese audio track (with English subtitles is so desired).

Classifying the show isn’t near as easy as typing out its hard stats however, as I’m quickly discovering. Technically it’s a mecha entry on account of its use of robotics throughout. In fact the very term Vandread is derived from the concept of the physically conjoining of a fighter robot called a Van-Type and a space-fighter craft known as a Dread. When combined, the two craft become a powerful giant robot that can range in appearance from a hulking, oversize-gun carrying humanoid to a metallic crab surrounded by orbiting weapon-spheres depending upon the combination of the ships involved.

However, and unlike most robot shows, Vandread is as much a space-opera as it is a science fiction/ action piece. It’s set in the distant future in a Universe where mankind has expanded his reach of population to include multiple planets and space stations. However, and what makes Vandread unique, the show literally opens with a propaganda film designed to frighten an all-male populous with the fact that all women are, in fact, monsters.

See it turns out that in the future, thanks to cloning techniques, male and female copulation (or even cohabitation for that matter) is no longer necessary to continue the race. As such both sexes are only vaguely aware of the other’s existence. Yes it’s a novel concept and sure it lends to Vandread’s individuality as a whole, but the same-sex reproduction ideals are a bit sketchy (if not homosexual promoting).

The big gag, at least early on anyway, works off the concept of three males becoming entangled with an all-female pirate ship before being transported, via a space-warp, to a distant galaxy to avoid annihilation. The core of the story follows this ship’s (the Nirvana) voyage back home while paying special attention to the daily drama stirred up thanks to the differences between the sexes. No, not those differences, but rather the awkwardness and feelings of passion that only be achieved through the old “opposites attract” concept. It’s immature, it’s silly, it’s sometimes annoying but Vandread makes certain to counteract the goofiness with a steady-dose of CG rendered action sequences that still hold up even after all these years.

The visuals are far more solid then they have any right to be considering the show’s vintage. What’s that, you say there are shows far older (Gundam Wing or Macross for example) that still look nice so what’s the big deal? Well keep in mind that right around the time that Vandread was created, the world was making a collective move away from standard hand-drawn cells and painted backgrounds to an all out computer generated imaging overload. That’s fine and good, but many early efforts of the practice suffered from limited hardware capabilities, stiff animation and poor texturing. Somehow Vandread ducks and weaves through this minefield of pitfalls by combining a beautifully vibrant color pallet in the standard animation with CG inspired exterior backgrounds and robot models. Sure, the process has been refined in the nine years since but that isn’t to say Vandread suffers any as a result.

Pacing can best be described as all over the place as the early episodes were brutally formulaic and relied far too heavily upon the whole “men and women meeting for the first time will be funny” gimmick. Additionally most of the first season is structured more as a succession of stand-alone episodes than a single ongoing tale. This trend degenerates to grander story arcs as the show progresses and by the middle of the Second Stage; Vandread feels more like a traditional mecha anime entry.

In my opinion the move away from the cuteness and attempts at slapstick to the slightly more psychologically engaging plots of the Second Stage was a step in the right direction. So much so in fact that I almost feel like the series probably would have hit its stride in the third or fourth season had it lasted that long.

As a whole the show suffers a bit in terms of confliction scope, as the enemies our cast frequently engages throughout the entire series are never really known as anything other than “the enemy”. Worse still, they appear out of nowhere, get whipped, then live to attack another day. Their motives are never clear, nor is their presence ever fully justified. Other detractors along the way include an over-the-top (and quite obnoxious) lead male character, and overly naive lead female character, and what can only be described as a robotic version of He-Man’s annoying court jester, Orko.

The soundtrack is especially well done with a reoccurring techno number that’s simply infectious. I had the pleasure of enjoying the set though a 5.1 surround sound speaker set and found that the rolling bass riff coupled with a high end of synthesized horns flawlessly.

In conclusion Vandread is certainly not for everyone but manages to survive the test of time thanks to its unwavering (if at times, forceful) charm. While it rarely gets the credit it deserves, the show certainly paved the way for many robot-based series that would follow (titles like Gravion and Godannar). This latest DVD release from the masters of quality at Funimation assures that Vandread will continue to spread its charm with the presentation values it deserves.

This series was very reminiscent of series like Trigun, Full Metal Panic, and Outlaw Star nothing to serious but entertaining, dramatic, and funny enough to be very addictive. The first thing you have to realize is not to take most of this series seriously though if you’re looking for a hardcore dramatic series like Ghost In The Shell, Akira, or the like than this series won’t be for you, while it has space mechas battles and some drama for most of the series it’s mostly light-hearted for the first season. The start of Vandread Second Stage does become a little more dramatic and serious though especially with the story-arc of what the people of Earth have done to the human colonies in space for their own agenda. The main plot of the series is that after a century or so of the male/female genders being separate and living on different worlds they for whatever reason have started fighting one another for resources and personal agendas. The stories on both sides on what the other genders are like also make the series very funny, as when you hear the story on the male home-world at how demonic the females are and how they will eat your organs and are just horrific. Thus begins the awkward journey of three males trapped on a ship of a multitude of attractive females after a battle between the genders goes chaotic and causes a fusion of the male and female space ships. The cast have a vast array of humorous situations that make for a good laugh throughout the show and the characters are hilarious as you see as they try to interact between the genders bumbling along sometimes. The true cute couple of the series for me were Hibiki Tokai a third grade citizen on his world who basically was just a lowly factory worker when he got trapped aboard the ship because he boasted he could bring back a vanguard, and Dita Liebely a bubbly female pilot of the ship who wants to contact her first alien and since she’s never seen a male before she sees Hibiki as the first alien she’s contacted. The video is clear and sharp so no complaints and the audio was also good the cast for both the Japanese/English were good as well. Again though like the recent releases from Funimation the set is four dvds put into two thinpack dvd cases and than into a paper sleeve, the extras aren’t much just the standard textless intro/ending songs and some trailers but for the price still not bad. So if you like funny action drama sci-fi animes here’s a good one to look at for you anime collection…

I agree with just about everyone else who has reviewed this DVD, how can the people who edited this cut out the BEST performance of the concert which was Extreme’s medley of Queen songs. I thank my lucky stars I still have it on tape from when MTV first aired the concert 10 years ago. It’s my favorite part of the show and by far one of the coolest moments. The band, most especially Gary Cherone, payed tribute to Freddie and Queen in the best way I’ve ever seen. The medley of songs were performed with such excitment and the audience loved them. So did I :) This DVD just starts the concert with Joe Elliott doing Tie Your Mother Down, that’s like the middle of the show! There were several performances cut out mainly Metallica, Guns ‘N Roses, Def Leppard, and the above mentioned Extreme. This DVD needs to be re-issued in it’s entirety. I did, however, like those Freddie segments included on the dvd that were shown to the audience during intermission. Those were really cool. Great concert but not shown to it’s fullest potential on this dvd and that’s a real shame. QUEEN AND FREDDIE deserve more…and so do the fans :)

Like some of the other reviewers, I am lucky to have the VHS version of the concert. Believe it or not, the VHS version is much better than the DVD version….The DVD version has only half of the concert…..i love the first half of the concert, but its not included on the dvd. The whole dvd would have been enjoyable if the ENTIRE concert was on it :-(
