Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920’s serial killer known as “The Merry Widow Murderer,” the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. That’s where young Charlie (Teresa Wright) lives with her parents and two younger siblings, and where murder is little more than a topic of morbid conversation for their mystery-buff neighbor (Hume Cronyn). Charlie was named after her favorite uncle, who has just arrived for an extended visit, and at first Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) gets along famously with his admiring niece. But the film’s chilling prologu has already revealed Uncle Charlie’s tru identity as the notorious Merry Widow Murderer, and the suspense grows almost unbearable when young Charlie’s trust gives way to gradual dread and suspicion. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the faCade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it’s least expected. Selleck is well-matched by veteran scene stealer Saul Rubinek, and there’s good work by Polly Shannon as a city attorney who becomes Stone’s romantic interest, and Stephen Baldwin as an ill-tempered local. Fans of author Robert B. Parker (on whose books the Jesse Stone films are based) and Selleck won’t be disappointed by this smart thriller. i–Paul Gaita/i

If the basic story and characters all sound familiar, it may not surprise you that producer Gale Anne Hurd’s other films include IThe Terminator/I and IAliens/I. This movie and its derivative screenplay aren’t nearly as good as those were, and director John Bruno (who won an Oscar for best visual effects for IThe Abyss/I) seems more skilled at action choreography and special effects than character and story. Curtis plays another variation on her “scream qUn” persona, while Donald Sutherland gives a deliciously hammy performance as the tug captain (in his words, “the dominant life form”) who smells salvage money if he can claim the Russian ship for his own. For all the picture’s flaws, the effects are good (and gory) and it moves at top speed for a brisk 100 minutes. A trivia factoid: at one point on this troubled production, film footage was seized at the airport because the shipping box was prominently marked with the film’s title! I–Geof Miller/Ibrbrbrbr

She was a determined, self-perpetuated creation–a master at promoting her public self, which “she wore like a mask that could not be penetrated.” That she ultimately became the richest woman in America at one point in her career was a testament to her sheer will to succeed in show business. ICarmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business/I is a hit-and-miss, sometimes shabbily done “proto-documentary” about her childhood and stardom, enacted with the sort of faux seriousness that is at times embarrassingly inane. The real people in the film, including her cousin, actors Cesar Romero, Rita Moreno, and Alice Faye (who says simply, “She had magic”), and boyfriends from her youth (”She had eyes like the headlights on a car,” rus one) paint a portrait of a woman who, though effervescent on the surface, was haunted by criticism from home after she became “Americanized” and who endured a cold, loveless, physically abusive marriage. Miranda emerges as a Hollywood victim, for although she had everything she wanted, she was never given the studio’s blessing to escape from her image to pursu her tru musical talent. Sleeping pills, depression, and electroshock therapy followed, further indicating an underlying misery despite Miranda’s gleeful public expression that “bananas is my business.” Yet she never despised her famous alter ego–a Latin spitfire bombshell who wore a fruit basket on her head. Her death by a heart attack, which followed a collapse while dancing with Jimmy Durante, is unfortunately mismanaged in the film by director Helena Solberg. Miranda, who is still remembered by millions, hardly merits a bad reenactment of her lonely demise. It’s a shame this intriguing documentary (that is, when it sticks to the film clips and archival footage) feels compelled to inject such speculative contrivances, because Miranda’s life was fascinating of its own accord.
