When people find out you are a florist one question that pops up all the time is “How do I make flowers last”. Or they tell you different ways that they have heard of to make arrangements last longer, like adding a penny, sprite, or an aspirin to the water. So here is a quick top seven for anyone that is interested.

1.       Change the water daily. This is the simplest way to make flowers last longer. Nothing like fresh clean water to help keep the flowers drinking. Hydrated flowers are happy flowers.

2.       Cut the stems at an angle. Cut your flowers before you first put them in water if you buy them loose. Also cut them every couple of days. Make sure to use sharp scissors or shears, be careful not to crush the stems. This tip also helps with the water intake.

3.       Buy fresh flowers that are still in bud. When you look at the flowers at your local florist, the wide open ones always look the best but don’t buy them. If the flower is already open it won’t last that long. You want the flowers that are still in bud, or not open yet. Make sure the flower is still firm as well. You can enjoy them opening when you get them home. 

4.       Cleanliness is key. You want to put your fresh flowers into a clean container or vase. Like in rule #1 clean water is very important. So if your vase is dirty your water is dirty. Any bacteria can speed up the decay of flowers.

5.       No leaves under water. The leaves will start to decay and contaminate your water. It cannot be said enough flowers need clean water.

6.       Don’t over heat your flowers. Keep them as cool as possible. Do not set them in direct sun light, keep them out of the draft from your heater. If you work in a kitchen and someone sends you flowers do not set them over the serving line. Well you get the picture. The hotter flowers get the quicker they will open and begin to wilt.

7.       Feed your flowers. Once again fresh clean water is the best thing for keeping flowers fresh. If you want to put something in the water make sure it is food. Your local florist will have some on hand. You can also find some good recipes on line.

br Director Gordon Chan, who launched his career in the 1980s with sharply observed social comedies such as IThe Yuppie Fantasia/I, moved on to documentary-inflected police procedurals, a gritty Hong Kong subgenre pioneered by Johnny Mak (IThe Long Arm of the Law/I) and Kirk Wong (IRock ‘n’ Roll Cop/I). Like many younger HK directors, Chan may also have been influnced by the icy-cool Japanese gangster films of Takeshi Kitano (ISonatine/I). This 1998 entry, Chan’s best since IThe Final Option/I (1994), is about the redemption of a slobbish veteran cop, played by grizzled Anthony Wong, whose pasty face looks slept in. Knee-deep in corruption and taking bribes with both hands, Wong finds, to his dismay, that the straight-arrow morality of his new young boss (Michael Wong) may be contagious. The film is as much a romantic melodrama as an action film, leisurely and observational, full of eccentric slacker detectives and feral dimwitted gangsters with nicknames like Man-Dick and Pushy Pin. People read these articles from all over the world, but I happen to be in sunny California. California is famous for its surfing, beaches, sun, outdoor rock concerts, and last but not least, it’s wonderful Mexican food. I get all of my Mexican food (and in fact most of my food) for free and in this short article I will show you how you can get your favorite food free also (not to mention a paycheck).

I get paid to shop , I am a mystery shopper, also known as a secret shopper, shadow shopper. I am a sub-contractor for over one hundred companies. I provide the service of evaluating customer service, employee honesty, establishment cleanliness, and in the case of restaurants the quality of the food.

For these services I get free food and a paycheck. If you are interested in becoming a mystery shopper  (and you should be) you will need to sign up as a sub-contractor with the mystery shopping  companies that use shoppers. You can find these companies through newspaper ads, radio and television, you can search the internet. There are literally thousands of companies looking for your services. I am currently posting a series on learning to mystery shop on my web site.

There are also other great informational mystery shopping websites such as Volition.com where you can not only learn the mystery shopping trade but actually sign up with the companies. For my Mexican food shop I get $40 in delicious Mexican food and a paycheck. What could be better?

Making their third feature since 1993’s IMenace II Society/I, twins Allen and Albert Hughes approach the Jack the Ripper case with physical precision, re-creating the gritty Whitechapel district of 1888 London in meticulous detail. What they’ve forgotten is the sheer terror that gripped Whitechapel in the wake of the Ripper’s slaying of five prostitutes, investigated here by a Scotland Yard sleuth (Johnny Depp) who uses opium, laudanum, and absinthe to ful his semiprescient visions of the slayings. Heather Graham attempts a slippery Cockney accent as a would-be victim, while Ian Holm steals the show as a has-been surgeon with devilish delusions of grandeur. Country homes have a warm, welcoming feeling. While the concept of these homes originated in the rural countryside, today country homes are located in all types of neighborhoods. From beautiful bungalows to elegant French country homes, there is a rustic nest to suit your preferences.

Bungalow homes have been around for centuries to accommodate families of all sizes and backgrounds. Modern American bungalow house plans usually have 1 or 1 ½ stories. In the late 19th century, French country homes became popular in the United States. Much like the allure of fashions from Paris, Americans were enchanted by the romantic design of homes modeled after those built in the French rural countryside. French country homes can be darling cottage or sprawling estates. The exterior of these homes is usually brick, stucco or stone with hip roof lines. Interiors include rustic wood beams on the ceilings and entries topped with arched openings. Some country homes include double French doors leading out to a deck or patio.

Other accents frequently found in French country house plans are trimmed painted timbers, shuttered windows and decorative window boxes filled with colorful flowers. The windows are typically tall and thin. French country homes may also have multiple gables and arches over the windows and garage openings. Wrought iron railings are used on porches with brick or stucco accents around the doors and windows.

Country homes offer casual charm with understood elegance. Unique indoor and outdoor furnishings complete their appeal. Place a wrought iron bench under a tree on your front lawn. Include wrought iron accent inside your home, such as a decorative towel rack in the bathroom. Hang sheer, flowing curtains from all the windows that allow light in while still offering some level of privacy.
