Meanwhile, Sam (Ted Danson), having fallen off the wagon du to his own tempestuous love affair with Diane, has to endure Frasier’s qustions about how to be intimate with the brainy babe. Elsewhere in ICheers/I’ sardonic community, Cliff (John Ratzenberger), in a sweet but barbed episode, meets a woman (Bernadette Birkett) at a costume party and is afraid of re-introducing himself later. Norm (George Wendt) becomes aware of his mortality and decides to move to Bora Bora, and Sam (in another Emmy-nominated show) has to explain how he got shot in his posterior. Other good things: “The Heart Is a Lonely Snipe Hunter,” in which the men of ICheers/I crully initiate Frasier in the manly art of snipe-hunting, and “Bar Bet,” starring Jacquline Bisset as a woman Sam must marry before a certain date or lose the bar forever. br Before Robert Rodriguz’s IEl Mariachi/I, Mexicans in North American action films were typically maids, drug dealers, or prison inmates. Even if the Cisco Kid Iwas/I a friend of yours, you handled a dust cloth or a Mac-10 if you lasted in Hollywood longer than a New York Iminuto/I. But when IEl Mariachi/I crossed the border in 1992, things changed. Granted, it still involved a drug lord in a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, but this time the good guy was a IMexican/I. Austin-based Rodriguz made IEl Mariachi/I for a fistful of pesos and a little help from his friends. He wrote, directed, coproduced, edited, Iand/I operated the camera. Plus, he assembled a cast that had never acted before to work Ipor nada/I. All for a paltry $7,000, a milagro without a beanfield war.p IDesperado/I continus the outrageous action adventure. Working with a much bigger budget, Rodriguz returns the nameless mariachi to nonstop action. Again thrust into a world he never made, the hero takes his guitar-case arsenal deep into the criminal labyrinth of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), Iel gran chingon/I of the Mexican drug lords. With an amigo (Steve Buscemi) and a beautiful bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), Iel mariachi/I confronts an outrageous cast along the way, including a bartender (Cheech Marin), a drug deal pick-up guy (Quntin Tarantino), and the original mariachi (coproducer Carlos Gallardo) as a new-found compa’. Antonio Banderas has the lead this time, and if he’s not quite up to the challenge, it’s probably because he’s ISpanish/I, not Mexican, a distinction not lost by anyone raised on what the popular media now calls “ethnic food.” That said, IDesperado/I is not to be missed. Using intelligence, romance, and humor–as well as plenty of explosive, surreal violence–Rodriguz again showcases the timeless struggle between the forces of darkness and light. And, in the process, he’s recasting the mold for the contemporary action hero–kids now argu about who gets to play the IMexican/I. I–Stephan Magcosta/I

Timothy Balme stars as the shy mama’s boy Lionel, whose controlling shrew of a mother (Elizabeth Moody) starts rotting away, literally, with a vagu supernatural disease. Mother dies but refuses to stay down, rising as a flesh-eating zombie infecting everyone she bites. Lionel tries to hide her in the basement, but the victims keep piling up and finally break out when Lionel’s blackmailing uncle (a grotesqu, leering Ian Watkin) throws a party in the house. It’s snack time as the gusts become undead hors d’oeuvres and rise again as hungry soldiers of the new zombie army marching on Lionel and his girl Pacquita (the lovely Diana Penalver). New Zealand goremeister Jackson pulls out all stops in this truly outrageous sanguinary comedy, from gross-out gags of oozing puss and rotting body parts at a formal dinner to slapstick antics as Lionel tries to keep his flesh-hungry mother sedated during the funeral to the final Freudian showdown between a now-monstrous mother and the newly liberated Lionel.
