You think that success will be yours as long as you walk upon, and strictly keep to, an imaginary path. This path is your interpretation of texts and the poured concrete beneath your feet is the dogma itself. I’ve met now a number of people who put their lives on shaky ground after reading “The Secret.” In general the problem is less with the book and more how the reader picked from the buffet of new dogma to feed their minds./ppPeople who have a romantic view of life look for passages in these texts to validate their beliefs. Sometimes it’s conscious and sometimes unconscious, it probably has a lot to do with how well you pay attention to how you think. People who think there should be an easy way to success look for what they perceive as shortcuts in these texts to validate and enable their tendencies. To misuse a book like “The Secret” is probably human nature and I have great empathy for people who get off course instead of on track or become dejected when things don’t change as quickly as they’d hoped./ppI’ve studied the misapplication of texts like “The Secret” and I’ve noted some prominent symptoms. The primary symptom is an over-reliance on “wishful thoughts” combined with a suspect implementation plan or even the lack of a clear plan. Making matters worse for some is what I call, romantic enabling. When people justify negative events by saying things like “it just wasn’t meant to be” or “I’ll end up where I’m supposed to end up,” or “it’s all part of a great plan.” The trap door these people have fallen into is an over-reliance on the Law of Attraction, but they do not understand that success is not rewarded unless they apply the Law of Action./ppJust as our bodies require a double-strand of DNA to grow, what success requires is the double-strand of positive thought combined with unyielding focus. This unyielding focus can also be characterized as gutsy tenacity./ppRecently an entire new industry began cropping up as supplements to “The Secret,” because many people are not seeing the desired results. That’s capitalism for you, someone will make money either way. I can imagine someone saying, “I couldn’t get the book to work for me and I paid $200 for the missing pieces to “The Secret” and that didn’t work either.” Personally, this seems like shorting a stock. These “shorters” as they are called, bet on a stock going down. And many got rich as the Dow Industrial sank and sank recently. It makes me uncomfortable to think of this in human terms, but that’s what these so called supplements to “The Secret” are doing, they are shorting human beings and profiting./ppNot everyone can be President of the United States, not everyone can found their own company and make it succeed, not everyone can write a novel and get it published. This is all still part of natural selection. It’s not that people aren’t strong. But not sticking to your vision when facing adversity is a gravitational pull that only the strongest can elude. Your will is one of the most important organs in your body. Not everyone knows how to nurture it. Think of some great tycoons, Getty, Trump, Gates-their will is the size of a tractor trailer. It’s bigger than their bodies. How big is your will? Thomas Edison made about 1000 attempts at a light bulb before he got it right. He stuck with it, learned from each experiment and was loathe to call them failures./ppBefore you buy something else that may or may not work and could certainly lead to greater disappointment if it is does not-would you please try this first: take a deep breath and tell all of your thoughts to whisper so quietly that you cannot hear them. Next, remind yourself that each day is a miracle and an opportunity to change your life. bAnd here is the key to it all:/b don’t say to yourself, “today will be the day that things will happen for me.” Say to yourself, “today is the day that I will make things happen.” Do you see the difference? Put yourself in the drivers seat and don’t box yourself in thinking that “the breakthrough” must happen today./ppThings will get better if you work toward your goal each day. There are so many successful people out there, find someone inspirational and get to know their story. An easy and enjoyable way to do this is simply by renting an inspirational movie each week. Rent movies like “October Sky,” “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Erin Brockovitch,” “Ghandi” or “The Right Stuff.” These are true-life stories about people that could not be peeled away from their vision. We need to look up to individuals that reveal their will by focusing so deeply that they would not, absolutely would not let go of it until they had had it./ppI have studied in great detail the philosophies and personalities of successful people in a wide variety of vocations and time periods. It is fascinating to hear them speak or write and independently corroborate basic principles to success. What rings true across the board is that highly evolved and disciplined action combined with an unyielding focus to achieve their vision ultimately culminates in success. In this way, success is within our control and within reach. It is up to us. But there is no timetable as to when it is delivered to us. Have soft hands and be ready to catch it./ppThe vision is the easy part. Navigating each day, working each day, planning, sweating, finding ways to sweat less if you are sweating too much, eliminating negative thoughts, keeping your head in the game and your spirits high-this is what it’s all about. This is no big secret. It’s not for everybody.
