br Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can’t quite live up to its reputation. IPlan 9 from Outer Space/I is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you’ve heard. IPlan 9/I is the story of space aliens who try to conqur the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates (”Future events such as these will affect you in the future!”) as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, IPlan 9/I is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniqus: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have “NOT BELA LUGOSI” stamped on his forehead. IPlan 9/I is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it’s impossible not to love it. br Destined to remain a dubious footnote in books of movie trivia, this occasionally impressive epic from 1981 was financed with a budget of $35 million by Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who previously attempted the role of movie producer with the critically roasted IMohammad: Messenger of God/I. This effort didn’t fare much better (it grossed approximately $1 million worldwide), and although some of its wartime action sequnces are intelligently filmed, it’s not likely to gain much more of a reputation on home video. Under a shaggy Muslim beard, Anthony Quinn stars as Omar Mukhtar, the Arab hero and gurilla fighter who defended Libya against Benito Mussolini and Italy’s attempted conqusts during World War II. As straightforward biography, the movie’s got an admirable epic sweep, but a cliche-ridden script and uniformly bad performances (from a cast that includes John Gielgud, Oliver Reed, and Rod Steiger) make this little more than a curiosity for those wanting to learn more about Libyan history. i–Jeff Shannon/i
